Park Hae-jin, Jin Ki-joo fight crime and evil spirits in MBC’s Showtime Begins!
by tccolb
Now that a premiere date has been announced, we’re finally starting to see more promos, including a new poster and video teaser, for MBC’s supernatural mystery-comedy Showtime Begins!.
The drama stars Park Hae-jin (Old School Intern) as a ghost-seeing magician who teams up with local police officer Jin Ki-joo (Oh! Samkwang Villa ) in order to solve a mystery. Park has long been serving the needs of the spirit world and has three ghosts under his employment as well. The rag-tag team is also guided by General Jung Jun-ho (True Beauty), a deity who has been watching over Park’s family for generations.
The newly released teaser starts with an eerie flashback to a mystical incident in the past. We then quickly jump back to the present where an angry Jin Ki-joo questions Park Hae-jin, “What just happened? What is all this?!” Park stares at Jin for a moment before simply responding, “Ghosts.” Text screens soon follow, reading: “A CEO who sees ghosts” and “A CEO who summons ghosts.”
Skeptical and finding him suspicious, Jin Ki-joo tries to arrest Park Hae-jin while he tries to protest his innocence. Cut to a frustrated Park, complaining to his three ghost employees in the car, “At this rate, our company is going to get shut down.” The three ghosts continue their search afterwards and when Jung Seok-yong (Inspector Goo) sticks his head through a sewer grate, Go Kyu-pil (Crazy Love) calls out to him, “Director Nam, do you see anything?”
With the next text screen, we move onto Jin Ki-joo’s character: “A passionate police officer, fired up for justice.” Jin confidently asserts, “I am just dedicated to my duty as a cop.” But she stress vents on the phone afterwards, “This is the first time I’ve seen someone who thinks only of themselves to this extreme and is so obsessed with money.” All the while, fellow police officer Kim Hee-jae tries to get Jin’s attention and points to the very people who came to see her: Park Hae-jin and Jung Jun-ho.
In a sequence of shots, we see Park Hae-jin and Jin Ki-joo finally starting to work together, but the comical tone of the teaser shifts to something more ominous. We see evil spirits attacking a shaman ritual and Park asks, “Why was I dragged here?” A woman informs him, “They say he’s not dead or alive,” and we get a quick flashback to a funeral in the past before returning to the present again. We see a crime investigation going badly for Jin Ki-joo and she cries, “I’m sorry, it’s because I’m not good enough. I let the culprit get away, even though he was right in front of me.”
Taking lead of the situation, Park Hae-jin tells Jin Ki-joo with a flourish, “Starting now, Showtime Begins!” and the following text screen introduces the story as a: “Supernatural comedy-mystery.” Putting on fun disguises, Park and Jin go undercover to help crackdown on an illegal gambling den. Jung Jun-ho meets with the pair afterwards, and is amused by the win-win situation: solve the mystery and make some cash. As the teaser comes to a close, we hear Jin Ki-joo cheering on Park Hae-jin, “Good luck! Fighting!” and the final text screen reads: “Premiering Saturday, April 23 at 8:40pm.”
Written by Ha Yoon-ah (Mystic Pop-up Bar) and co-directed by PD Jung Sang-hee and PD Lee Hyung-min (My Dangerous Wife, Chocolate), MBC’s Showtime Begins! premieres April 23.

I want to love this. I love the premise. And yet... more often than not I feel like Park Hae Jin chooses such questionable projects. Please let this be good. Please please please and a shin ramen packet for your progeny?

not gonna lie, I'm kinda loving the promo though. I don't think I've ever seen the "ice down the back of your shirt" thing in a kdrama until now.

The writer is good and so are the PD's. There's a good chance for this one.

Whatever happened to Park Haejin's career? I thought a few years back he was posed for breakout into a popular leading man. I liked him in Cheese in Trap (I know, I know) but haven't heard much of him since.

I think he was involved with a drama called Four Men that ran into financial difficulties and he had to go to court to get out of the contract. It’s probably why he ended up in Forest.

Meanwhile Forest had a lot of issues before it aired, it wrapped filming and waited a yr or so until it finally found a distributor (KBS). Seems like ever since Cheese in the Trap, his projects have been getting into some minor mishaps bts.
