Crazy Love: Episode 1 (First Impressions)
by missvictrix
Yay, it’s weird! Crazy Love is here, and off to a fun start. It’s hard to predict how it might go during the full run, but right now it is 100% worth it for Kim Jae-wook’s performance and the wacky could-go-anywhere setup.
Editor’s note: Continued drama coverage is pending based on Beanie feedback.
EPISODE 1 FIRST IMPRESSIONS
We open on what looks like a K-pop fan meet, with adoring fans lining up for miles waiting to get sight of their idol. Suddenly, a man in a hoodie cuts the line and stands at the top of a long staircase. When he pulls off his hood, some epic music kicks in and reveals the man they’ve all been waiting for… math genius and famed tutor NOH GO-JIN (Kim Jae-wook). He’s mobbed by fangirls and fanboys alike, and is in his glory.
In contrast to this, is his mousy secretary, LEE SHIN-AH (Krystal), who runs around each day like a headless chicken to supply his every need. Of course he’s persnickety and demanding, with an Americano that has to be at the perfect temperature (which she measures with a thermometer), and other tiny details that she has to see to, or else get cut down to size.
Shin-ah’s been in the gig for just a year, and even though she’s hanging on by a thread, she’s actually beat the record of all of Go-jin’s past secretaries. We’re treated to a montage of these past characters, leaving in either a fit of anger, or sobbing and miserable.
Shin-ah also seems pretty miserable, since Go-jin is unforgiving and practically treats her like a slave, but there are two things that seem to keep her going. The first is her dream to become an instructor at Go-jin’s hugely successful tutoring school (GoTop Education, Korea’s #1). The second is that there’s an “angel” at the office that helps her through.
That angel is Go-jin’s friend and deputy OH SE-GI (Ha Joon). He’s charming and thoughtful to Shin-ah, giving her a gorgeous bouquet on her one-year anniversary, and encouraging her in her dreams. Se-gi also seems used to dealing with (and ignoring) Go-jin’s brash personality, and being the softer and kinder side of GoTop’s management.
Pompous boss versus hard-working secretary is a familiar enough setup, but Crazy Love freshens things up with its total weirdness. Not afraid to be a little wacky, we follow Shin-ah as she imagines life-size cut-outs of the GoTop instructors coming alive in a building lobby and being ridiculous, which includes a giant Go-jin bullying her. But in addition to the wacky, there’s also an edge of dark — which was expected from the way the drama was marketed.
To start, Go-jin gets a bloody package in the mail, but doesn’t bat an eyelash. Turns out there’s a whole secret room he has that’s like a murder room in reverse: it’s filled with all the paraphernalia of death threats and angry notes and other horrible things he’s received over the course of his career. He seems to enjoy it in a strange way, perhaps because he’s worked his way up from poverty (ostensibly) and now has a flashy house, flashy car, mobs of fans, and is beloved enough to have haters.
Crazy Love’s first episode does a lot of setting the scene, but we still have much to learn about our characters. For now, in addition to learning about Go-jin’s rise from poverty, we also see a vignette from his past. He was a blonde punk that cleaned offices when his genius was discovered by fellow math whiz PARK YANG-TAE (Im Won-hee), who seems to have become his present-day competition.
As for Shin-ah, we don’t know much about her yet either, except she’s incredibly determined (since she’s stuck with Go-jin for so long) and she’s just weird enough to love — doing things like throwing herself a little confetti party using the office paper shredder.
There’s lots more weirdness to come, though, since at the end of the episode Shin-ah receives the news she has a brain tumor and next thing we know, she’s breaking and entering Go-jin’s luxurious home with an all-black ensemble and heavy eye makeup. What snapped in her, now that she has nothing to lose? Why is she spending her final time on earth giving even more of her precious time to an arrogant and money-loving CEO that treats her like dirt?
For a premiere episode, it feels both sparse and full of story at the same time — because it’s the outline of things to come. The tone is the trickiest thing to get across in this review, because Crazy Love is weird, but in a way all its own. It’s not zany in the way that Business Proposal is zany — Crazy Love is more strange and dark, with a sense of humor that’s fun to watch, but not very warm, if that makes sense. I’m interested to see where they take this story, and how in the world they’ll handle a love line in a drama that doesn’t seem like it cares about warmth and romance at all… yet?
Hands-down the best part of this drama so far is Kim Jae-wook’s performance — he acts like a stuck-up magician with a dark streak, but even in his meanness or most antagonistic moments, it’s impossible to dislike him. He doesn’t seem “bad” per se, but even if he is, that wicked grin on his face is hard to resist.

(Haven't watched the 2nd episode yet.) Thanks for the recap missvictrix! You and I are on the same wavelength, heh.
Crazy Love's tone is definitely different from the other quirky show I'm watching (Business Proposal).
I agree that CL didn't give off a warm feeling yet. I did soften a little when Go Jin was with his brother and he dropped his cold, mean attitude. I was horrified at all of the disturbing hate mail he accumulated and stored. Wonder if his coldness is a way to protect himself and keep others at a distance. His company looks cutthroat and I'm sure other instructors or companies would love to bring him down.
Go Jin is awful, but it helps that he was an underdog before he got to where he is now (and okay, yes it's Kim Jae Wook! He does evil and arrogance so well!). I'm curious what other obstacles he had faced before now. He wasn't the only awful character too. Some of the snobby instructors, ugh. Poor Shin Ah. I don't know how she lasted so long.
Delighted to see Im Won Hee. I've seen him be so extra, hope he has fun playing Park Yang Tae.

Thank you for the review. Hope it keeps coming!
I enjoyed the first EP. I agree crazy love is weird and I think that's exactly how they want it to be delivered, the intentionally over the top acting (aka prickly Noh Go Jin) making the viewers distaste him as a build up to what's to come for him in the future episodes 😆 and the same for Lee Shin Ah. My guess is we are going to see a transformation in their characters.
It's like they are doing a parody of cliches and tropes lol..it's just so much fun and they deliver these tropes not in a typical kdrama way. EP 1 is fun although some parts are abit slow and draggy but I do believe it's to set up the stage.
Love Kim Jae Wook, he really gets into his roles and nails them. But so hard to hate his character. There are soft moments to him too and him acting like a child over his birthday.
The scene with Im Won Hee was hilarious. Some of the dark humour may not be for everyone but I was laughing so hard over them. You really don't have to think much while watching this drama.
I watched ep 2 already and it gets even better. Hope to see your review on it soon 🙂

Thank you for your insightful review! I totally agree that Kim Jae-uck is by far the best part of this drama (as is often the case).
I liked the first ep but I loved the second. I had my doubts when Crazy Love was first announced but I now think Kim Jae-uck made a great choice.
The show’s quirky and entertaining and dark and intriguing. KJU’s perfect as Noh Go-jin and he’s clearly having a blast bringing him and all his idiosyncrasies to life. KJU’s a lifelong athlete who even took modern dance classes to gain a better understanding of body mechanics so it’ll be a treat getting to see him show off his physical comedy chops.
I’m glad they’ve started to flesh out NGJ so early in the show to temper his OTT arrogance and meanness. His opening up about his money fixation and the poverty he and his family had experienced makes him a tiny bit more sympathetic.
And his friendship with Se-gi goes a long way toward humanizing him. I loved the entire birthday sequence—how he got so upset over Se-gi forgetting and his tiny smiles and scoffs when he realized they’d remembered.
I also like the direction of the show and was especially impressed with the long uncut take that transitioned seamlessly from Lee Shin-ah to the three ex-secretaries back to Lee Shin-ah.
Can’t wait to see what happens next week. Looking forward to your review of Ep 2!🤞🏼

Thanks for the recap! I liked the second episode more than the first. I won't say much in case recaps continue but the scenes at the house were hilariously wacky.
Kim Jae-wook as usual was great. Whether he was pouting over wanting a birthday party or casually putting away a mouse carcass, it was all seamless. I thought Krystal was good too until the terminal diagnosis when she couldn't quite keep up with the emotional heavy lifting required.
Looking forward to next week.

I didn't really like both episodes. There were a lot of usual tropes and not enough to like. The characters weren't really likable.
I will try the 3rd because it could become more fun with the FL acting as the fake girlfriend.

Kim Jae wook is finally back on the small screen wooh!!!! That too a rom-com 🥳
I honestly didn’t think he’d do a 360 and play a complete asshole character from the sweet and considerate Ryan but I must admit he plays mean and arrogant very well.
I loved the first episode, it was as quirky and crazy as I expected it to be and the directing and music was spot on. Also I couldn’t stop laughing at that scene when the teddy bear fell off the rooftop and Noh Go Jin was like “my condolences.” Was that intentional? because that was just downright mean but also hilarious.
I really like this show. It’s as cracktastic as I hoped it would be so if they just keep this momentum I’ll be very very happy 😊

Yasss I agree with you, it's so funny and downright savage, I can tell they are playing things over the top intentionally and like Kim Jae Wook said it's a comedy drama where you don't need to take things too seriously.
Sadly, it feels like majority of the audience are not drawn to this type of execution or they are taking the events in the drama too seriously when it's meant to be exaggerated lol

I agree, I read some reviews and comments that they find the plot too odd and stupid to believe. But this is a dark comedy and i think it's meant to be a parody of drama cliches (amnesia, terminal illness, fake lovers). We need to turn off our brains for a while to enjoy this kind of shows. And I'm enjoying it so far. Kim Jae Wook is going all out to be funny and he's doing a good job on it!

I loved that "My condolences" line, too. If that is the show's sense of humor, I'm all in.

Se gi is Go jin's brother, not his friend.
And I don't truly trust Se gi. He is too nice to have lasted this long.
His need to re hire the instructor Go Jin just fired and had excorted out by security tells me as much.
And in what world is Krystal mousy? Even without a face caked on with makeup, that woman is absolutely stunning.

They are not biological brothers. He is just a friend and the most trusted person of Go Jin. So it would really hurt if it turns out Se Gi is the one behind the death threats.

I enjoyed the first episode enough that I will watch the second, but I’m not 100% sold yet. I did really enjoy the “he forgot my birthday/I am too cool to care about birthdays!” scenes 😂

i realized too late that this is an episode 1 recap only so I deleted my previous comment with spoilery part on episode 2.
I really like the first two episodes enough to eagerly await where this will lead us.
Noh Go Jin is a jerk so lets not mince words but despite all his nastiness KJW plays him that you can see a bit of his childishness and insecurity underneath on some scenes. Its this that I can't totally hate him just yet. While Lee Shina seems timid at first but I am glad that she has a great loads of determination and strong backbone underneath. There are a lot of great scenes on episode 2 that we get to see more of Shina's determination and backbone. Very satisfying scenes 😂

I wasn't planning to watch this even tho I like Krystal, but with this first impression, I think I'll try. I just have to catch up with all the past dramas I didn't watch and then suddenly learned that they were good.
