Park Min-young, Song Kang juggle work and love in new teasers for JTBC’s Weather People

New video teasers have been released for JTBC’s upcoming drama Weather People (working title), featuring lead actors Park Min-young (I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day) and Song Kang (Nevertheless).

The office romance delves into the inner workings of Korea’s National Weather Bureau, where our main characters are co-workers. Every day on the job is a challenge, as predicting weather can be tricky when a day of sun suddenly brings rain without warning. Similarly, the relationship between our leads takes a swerve when they go from co-workers to dating, and they learn firsthand how navigating love can be like navigating a storm.

In the first teaser, Song Kang takes hold of Park Min-young’s hand and he looks at her with blinking, puppy eyes. Park looks back at him cautiously and the video comes to a close as they slowly start smiling at each other. In voice-over, Park Min-young announces that the drama, “Weather People premieres February 2022.”

The second teaser opens with Song Kang grinning happily as he follows Park Min-young across a bridge at night. Park gives a small smile to herself and sneaks a quick glance at Song before turning back around. As they continue walking in a line, the video ends with Song Kang’s narration, “Weather People premieres February 2022.”

On the production side, directing will be helmed by PD Cha Young-hoon (When the Camellia Blooms, Are You Human Too) with scripts penned by Sun Young. As announced by our leads, Weather People will premiere next month in JTBC’s weekend slot.

This feels like Sunbae Don't Put on That Lipstick and the male lead in my mind could be replaced with Ro Woon's portrayal of the puppy dog lover. I could be wrong, since the plot differs, but the vibe is the same? That, or the trailer isn't very original.

You make that sound like a bad thing? To me being like SUNBAE DON'T PUT ON THAT LIPSTICK amounts to a solid recommendation.

@oldawyer I don't mind Ro Woon, but something about him in Sunbae wore on me? Like fluff without substance after a while, but that's just me. I'm glad you liked it!

I had a soft corner for him when love alarm first came out. Then he did love alarm 2 and nevertheless and I wrote him off. I did the same to Han sohee but then my name came out and I forgave her. But still think she needs to be a better actress and emote better when she doesn’t have much lines. She is terrific when she has lines but not much when she doesn’t. And song kang just needs to learn acting.

Agree on your HSH comment. I don't think she is the most naturally gifted actress, but she has 1) industry support and 2) work ethic, and those two things will take her really far. I was super impressed by her willingness to get down and dirty in My Name. It shows that she doesn't want to coast on her looks alone.

Agree with your Song Kang comment: he needs to learn how to act. He's very one-note at this point. PMY is a fabulous actress and seems capable of making absolutely any pairing they throw at her work amazingly, but this one may be a bridge too far... all of her other co-stars were pretty decent actors.

You may “forgive” Song Kang if you get to know what is the theme of Nevertheless… ;) , that is a love attraction that is primal, in the sense that it is first and foremost a chemical / physical attraction, for which no reasoning whatsoever can keep you “safe”. It is Love, no less valuable than any other form of love, even the favored friendship- style type ;)
If you are lucky enough to experiment that, it will give you everlasting memories, as it is unique, and can only happen if there is an underlying bond with the loved one… however difficult to grasp what it actually is … Human nature after all…

I think I might be in the minority here, but I think SK and HSH were picture perfect together and portrayed their characters marvelously in Nevertheless! The relationship there was toxic, yes; the theme of the show was to look at a toxic relationship through rose-tinted glasses, yes.

Maybe the ending just destroyed everything we ever felt for the actors. That might be it but I still
Stand by initial assessment that sk needs to learn acting. He is very much one note at this point, feel
Like his line delivery is the same everywhere.

I’m a fan of nevertheless too. Mainly because my puppy finally got the girl. 😂 I’ve followed him since Liar and his Lover as the not in her galaxy third lead. 😂 And people have forgotten his amazing performance in Navillera as a very convincing ballet dancer.

Confession: I am extremely meh on Song Kang. I don't get the hype 😔. So this one might be the litmus test for me - I haven't loved all of Park Min-young's shows but she's never failed to sell me on the chemistry with her leads. Fingers crossed 🤞

There's something about Park Min-Young, maybe her lovely full cheeks, that whenever I watch her (and her lovely cheeks) in her next drama, it's like I come visit my grandma and taste the strawberries from her garden -- oddly familiar and comforting, lol.

Of course, I would have to note that while she has certainly been good in rom-coms this may be the first time she is doing a Noona romance- although I could be wrong. But she is a very capable actress and, as you have noted, always has had good chemistry with the ML.

Thank you.

I appreciate the caveat, and I, too, can't think of her doing any type of noona romance (although I believe there was some grousing about her being older than her co-star in "Weather" but the characters were supposed to be roughly the same age and I had no issue seeing them that way). But she seems to have very good taste in projects and hopefully this won't be the exception.

I said when this was first announced that I couldn't picture these two together, and I'm still not sold. Maybe it's because I don't like noona romances, and she really looks like a noona. I don't really care for Song Kang either.

Because... it was too slow for me like watching Japanese dramas (I'm Japanese, I know them well), and this is just my opinion though, anybody who is above thirty is really hard to pull off being a high schooler without uniforms...
Her playing a high schooler without an uniform turned me off before I get into the story... Sorry.
So... I guess I can't really say I saw it then.

I get that appreciation of a performer's acting talent can be subjective but I never imagined I would see a comment like this about PMY. She does choose a fair number of rom-coms (my better half refers to her as Korea's Meg Ryan in her prime) but she has been in a lot of genres (City Hunter/Healer, Remember/New Leaf, and my favorites, Weather and Queen for 7 Days) that, IMO, firmly demonstrated her wide range and acting chops. She has been first rate in every thing I have seen of hers, including shows which were fairly mediocre but for her.

Required fields are marked *

Agree. I think she is a fine actress, with a lot of differentiation between her rom-com characters: the cheerful outside/wounded inside girl of Healer, the brutally efficient and emotionally closed-off Secretary Kim, the wary yet determined cellist of ISYWTWIN. And then ooof - the Queen of 7 Days. Yeah, she's got range.

I may sound harsh but Song Kang really needs to play supporting role for a while to hone his acting skills first. Keeping leading dramas with meh performance can seriously harm his acting career. Who wants to be remembered as a mediocre actor that gets overshadowed by his costar all the time?

I like Park Min Young, but I want to see her branch out into something that's not a rom-com or a romance. And change up her look. She looks the same in so many roles.

This your last point. It's not even about how typecast or mediocre the actors are the teasers were just bad. Nothing about it was exciting, the styling is horrible and at least in the teasers the chemistry is non existent.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

The teasers are so conventional... styling is stereotypical, the music warbling in the background is dime a dozen, there isn't a speck of anything unique or interesting. Honestly, PMY has her work cut out for her in this one. Although I can comfort myself with the fact that it will never be as bad as Now We Are Breaking Up (where I am convinced the co-stars detest each other and the writer hates everyone).

6

The styling is boring and basic. The hairstyles are the worst I've seen since the wig in Pinocchio. This feels very boring in both theme and chemistry which is definitely not sparkly. Even the filter is dull and dated.

Just wait, once she gets into mid-40's, all those Penthouse type dramas will be recruiting her. Then she's going to play that evil stepmom that seduces someone else's son. Or I'm just BSing and she will be like SHK and keep getting type-casted into romcoms.

Required fields are marked *

She will be like SHK and keep getting type cast into romcoms. She doesn't come across as the adventurous type anymore. Healer and City Hunter were hard carried by the male leads she didn't add anything extra to it and in Remember she was the equivalent of furniture. Q7D is the only drama where she tried to break out of the box but it tanked in ratings so she gave up trying completely. Secretary Kim, Private Life and Weather People are basically the same drama packaged differently. She's been in 12-14 dramas as a lead but only 2-3 can be truly called as "out of her comfort zone" which isn't much to speak of as far as acting versatility goes.

After Alice in Borderland & Sweet Home, I thought Song Kang is on his way to achieve YamaKen's super stardom. Y'know, the Netflix posterchild of their generations who make it big via multiple webtoon-adaptations? Ugh, Song Kang... maybe you should follow YamaKen's script choices instead?

Is his agency trying to sabotage his career? Is this their idea of 'one big project' before he heads-off for his MS? Cuz from the teaser, this looks utterly un-memorable.

The acting looks like acting. And not good acting for sure. The filter makes PMY's hair look brassy af. Not a good look tbh! :/ Wardrobe... heck, even interns in my heavily under-paid profession wear better stuff to client meetings! -_-

It's really good! It was my favourite MBC drama in 2021. I was sad they didn't win more awards.

It's about an engineer who works in the electronic section of big compagny that decided to sell this branch of the compagny. They sent the leader of the personnel department to prepare it (= fire people).

It was really interesting. Characters were not perfect but very human and touching.

2

Yup MBC gave most of their awards to their smash hit Red Sleeve Cuff, but I was kinda okay with that cos (1) Red Sleeve is that rare thing, a decent show that deserves its ratings success; (2) On the Verge of Insanity was praised to the skies by critics and viewers alike. In fact OTVOI is the highest placed non-cable drama in the prestigious Cine 21 year-end poll (at number 4, preceded by DP, Inspector Koo and Going to the Blue House).

Many Beans love OTVOI. Actually, many rated it as the most underrated drama of last year. I think this will be the right one for you.

I wrote off PMY before I watched Weather and rewatched Healer. I do agree that she reminds me sometimes of Song Hye-kyo -the one whose beauty comes first. So now I feel neutral about her.

Song Kang! I know he isn't the best one out there, but perhaps I'm like Netflix - having a soft spot for him. I watched two projects of his -Nevillera and Nevertheless and liked him a lot tbh. I liked him even more than the grandfather in Nevillera! In Nevertheless, he was the perfect bad boy. As he seems to always get interesting projects, I hope that his acting develops in the near future.

I have a soft spot for Park Min-young and I don’t dislike Song Kang, but man I am not sold on this one. Everything about this drama screams bland and the pairing does not work for me on any level. Now maybe if Yoon Park was the male lead…

Park Min-young needs to diversify her filmography. More Queen of 7 Days and less…whatever this is. She cannot coast on just having great chemistry with her male counterparts anymore. I hope she picks better scripts.

I just finished Queen of 7 Days. I watched it on a Beanie recomm. And loved so much about the dynamics aming the characters. Park Minyoung was excellent and her chemistry with Yoon Woojin was sizzling. I also loved Yeom Hye-ran as Chae-kyung's nanny. She was glorious and stole every scene she was in. It made me think how much better the RS could have been if San had been imbued with a bigger capacity for self-reflection and regret. I remembered in one of the earlier RS eps, Deokim said to San that she hoped he would develop the ability to apologise as it was an important trait for a King. San never did and this was demonstrated in the later episodes.

First, thank you Song Kang for the last ten minutes of episode 8 of NAVILLERA. It was the best television of 2021 for me. Of course you didn’t do it yourself but were part of the excellent acting, directing, music and editing that went into those ten minutes. Well done!

Now to the business at hand.
It may be pertinent that (according to AsianWiki) the literal title of this drama is METEOROLOGICAL ADMINISTRATION PEOPLE: OFFICE ROMANCE CRUELTY.
MDL is going with WEATHER PEOPLE: THE CRUELTY OF OFFICE ROMANCE. It also lists two writers: Kang Eun-kyung and Sun Yung.
I am on the fence for WEATHER PEOPLE (I can’t shorten it to WEATHER because for me WEATHER will always be Park Min-young’s I’LL GO TO YOU WHEN THE WEATHER IS FINE). I really liked PD Cha’s CAMELLIA and AYHT. What may draw me in is that Kim Mi-kyung is in the cast as yes Park Min-young’s mother.

I love romcoms and romances. It's one of the reasons I'm so glad I found kdramas. And I'm appreciative that an actress as talented as Park Min Young seems to enjoy doing them. It's nice to have a lead who has charm, good timing, and seemingly can create chemistry with any co star.

I heard on one of the k drama podcasts I listen to a suggestion that they'd love to see her paired with SIG and now I can't get that out of my head when I see casting news about her. Maybe one day.
