Premiere Watch: Hellbound
by missvictrix
Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Horror, thriller, fantasy
Episode count: 6
Netflix’s latest original series drops this week, and continues their trend of dark disturbing stories that probe the depths of human nature. In Hellbound, citizens start receiving death prophecies, and on the foretold date of their “death” are met with gigantic monsters that presumably come to take care of that event for them. With that as the backdrop, there’s also a cult leader (Yoo Ah-in) that’s somehow involved, and a bunch of other characters — from cops to ordinary citizens — who have to cope with this new reality. Notably, the drama is directed by Yeon Sang-ho of Train to Busan fame, so that should say everything we need to know about the tone and style headed our way.

There isn’t that much gore, but for a few scenes, but I hear you on the hair. He’s so handsome, he just actively TRIES to look bad. He nails the cult leader look though. He is handsome enough, but not dazzlingly so. He’s kind enough, but not excessively so. He’s mysterious and magnetic for sure. I wish he would allow more of his natural good looks to come through though. He was so handsome in Fashion King (hated it though), and as the independence leader in Chicago Typewriter.

Netflix takes these renowned directors and churns out the TV shows with a budget that the Hollywood director of the same renown would probably scoff at. Hwang Dong-hyuk famously lost six teeth while directing Squid Game. Hopefully, Yeon Sang-ho found the experience less stressful. Squid Game was not perfect but looked stunning cinematically. It told the story in a very deliberate thoughtful way, reminding me at times of the 80's Blade Runner. I hope Netflix brings more opportunities for these (and lesser known) international directors, prompting the good-natured competition, that leads to better written, better told stories from Hollywood. But I wonder at what expense. Netflix was famously giddy at the low cost productions with international production (at the major expense of the cheap regional labor, I'm sure) with high investment returns. I also wonder if Netflix execs are scratching their heads at why they should pay Chappelle close to $25 mil, just standing there and spewing nonsense and giving them "controversy headaches", when they can pay the same amount of money to the international productions with fantastic cast, fantastic props and renowned directors at the helm, telling a universal story, everyone can get behind. But at what expense to the local filmmaking communities, that's what bothering me.

Yes. I'm hoping they will get better pay as a result of these hits. I read somewhere that Netflix owned the rights. Therefore, no bonuses or no loyalty for the cast and creators. Hopefully, Netflix did give them something after.

With more streaming sites ij the run now Netflix will have to invest more. However, the sad thing is that Disney plus, Apple Tv, Netflix can sabotage the local streamers that are just starting out. Olleh Tv, Tving, Coupang Play may just not be able to pay as much.

I just finished the first 3 episodes which are like Part 1 as the next and final 3 seem to be a gear switch with a new batch of characters. I could potentially finish all 6 in one go - but that’s not doing justice to this thought provoking drama.
When seeing the trailer, it looks similar to Sweet Home which I love - but Hellbound is, to me, less gore but more anchored by a theme (which I won’t spoil here). It is a drama worth dissecting from different angles especially with the development towards the end of Ep 3.
After the set up in Ep 1, I found Ep 2 and 3 a breathless run that you must watch those two episodes together. Then, a break is needed to digest what’s it about. YAI will probably get a lot of awards for his role here. All others including Kim Hyun-joo, Yang Ik-jun and Lee Re are all doing a fine job. Looking forward to the second half and Park Jung-min’s fine performance.

@jorobertson I don't think I'm particularly pessimistic, but just a cursory glance at the news tells me that there's loads of stuff in our lives, past, present and definitely future, that makes Hellbound incredibly relevant. The way our search for meaning and happiness has gone seriously awry, leading to deep and often violent conflict, and even worse to the exploitation of whatever and whomever the ruthless can lay their hands on. The widening gap between the haves and the have-nots, largely due to the abuse of money, religion, technology, ideology, etc. I thought New Truth was particularly well observed, with its well-meaning but seriously twisted founder not only inflicting his dangerous ideas on the populace but handing the reins to a despotic idiot.
I do agree that a lot of the show is pretty unpleasant, but I'm surprised that you think it is devoid of redemption and forgiveness. Those are qualities that the Sodo group has devoted itself to bringing back, and the end of the show seems to be hinting that they might succeed beyond their wildest dreams

@jorobertson I was just reading about a guy who has been sentenced to death for trying to smuggle about one and a half ounces of heroin into Singapore. A lot of people there seem to believe that the death penalty is needed to scare people into NOT smuggling drugs into the country. Shades of Chairman Jung, I think, and by all appearances equally ineffectual, cos the death penalty certainly didn't deter that smuggler or the people who put him up to it.

I'm up to 30 mins into ep 3 and scrolling through this helped to find someone who is also ready to discuss it. Once I get on with it a bit, I'll come back. I'm repelled and intrigued at this point. YAI is nailing his character, and this whole thing about punishment for one's sins is striking me as different to Devil Judge which was about the administration of justice. The mob violence is horrific. Must press on. The detective/father has arrived at the Angel's retreat.

That ending is quite something, isn’t it? I don’t mean the epilogue at the end but that big finale. Fifteen minutes before the end of Ep 6, I still have no clue how they could wrap it up - but they DID it. I was at awe and hope it would just end like that. The epilogue or a S2 is not what I’d prefer.

I watched the first three and am deliciously savoring this masterpiece as well. I am so impressed with Yoo Ah In’s performance. The deeply calm, complex, enigmatic cult leader portrayal with his smooth bass voice is enthralling. Kim Hyun Joo’s performance was amazing as well. She is so beautiful, but her intelligence and emotions are a perfect character foil for the main characters. I will seriously be sad when the last episode is finished.

I like Park Jung-min the best here. A no non-sense folk who just tries to protect his family and peers. His acting is “no acting” - because all you can see is that character, not PJM. That’s why he can be one of the top tier movie actors so young and quickly although in a very different trajectory from that of YAI.
Hope KHJ would get a broader international recognition because, honestly, she can play beautiful, intelligent and strong female characters like no others.

I thought the entire cast was fantastic. I can see why Yeon Sang-ho wanted Yoo Ah-in to play Jung Jin-soo so badly. It's a performance that bears re-watching, especially in view of what we find out about him in ep3. Yang Ik-joon and Park Jung-min are thoroughly convincing and sympathetic as decent men who do their best in a terrible situation. Kim Hyun-joo - what can I say, that woman is on a roll, with Watcher, Undercover and now this. But for me the standout was Kim Shin-rok, who played Park Jung-ah. Only a small role, but it was all there: the fear, the shame, the habitual deference to her supposed social betters, the way she kept shrinking into herself and smiling shakily, like she thought she was too insignificant for anyone to care about. And everything done sotto voce. I thought she was great as the detective in Beyond Evil, but she is even better here.

@knewbie my questions were entirely rhetorical. I endorse your observations, I just didn't have time to elaborate. I dashed my comment off in the car, while waiting to pick up school children.
Yes. People are enraged and long to see justice and punishment enacted. I'm disturbed that this is our world. I'm not critical of the drama. I was engrossed by it, and I thought the actors were superb. But I do hold to the absence of redemption and forgiveness in New Truth. I accept your point about Sodo, but New Truth's "theology" was twisted from the beginning. The focus was on punishment, and to avoid punishment, you needed to be sinless. There was not room for repentance once you'd received your decree. It was particularly interesting when they were debating whether or not to introduce the idea of Original Sin in order to preserve the logic of justified punishment.
Your point about success: At the end, are we seeing a resurrection? It certainly looks like it. I'd be v disappointed if the reconstituted body turns into something zombie-like.

Yup, redemption and forgiveness were certainly absent from New Truth's doctrine. It was all about putting the fear of hell (not even the fear of God) into people, via the monsters and the Arrowhead.
The regeneration could go either way (I was thinking about zombies too, and also the BBC series The Fades), but just the very fact of it would put New Truth in a very awkward position. What gave me more hope was that the people who witnessed the last two demonstrations were finally willing to stand up to New Truth.

Yes. I thought that too. In the end it came back to the people and their innate sense of natural justice (imo Korea finds great comfortin the people). Also what the taxi driver said (always a source of wisdom) about the earth belonging to human kind, a message of responsibility and even perhaps stewardship.
I was also thinking that I should be careful to see the damnation enacted by the monsters as separate from the interpretation put on it by New Truth. The latter was the twisted logic of inescapable punishment for sin.
But we weren't party to the logic of the monsters. The sacrifice of the parents for the sake of the baby and the people at the end seemed to unlock something that then led to the "resurrection "
It was all quite clever and subtle and possibly profound. Perhaps even ironic. I agree too with your observations about Kim Shin-rok's character. Perfectly played and v moving.
Personally I found the live executions almost unbearable (not only the demonstrations 😉)
And of course, YAI. He nailed it.

I’ve been reflecting on this drama since finishing it on Sunday. A lot of criticism was about the second half not as good as the first which I disagree. It looks to me a deliberate creative direction to do a time skip within the 6-ep confine. They’ve implied in ep 4 as to how the earlier development has changed the world with the growth of New Truth and a conventional storytelling to include how KHJ set up the SoDo Group is not adding much to the story.
Ep 4-6 is simply to zero in how ordinary folks are affected from PJM’s colleague to his own family. The baby’s prophecy is an answer to YAI’s prophecy in that ‘that God” does not discriminate, hence breaking the facade of New Truth. Given the popularity of cults in Korea, the materials presented in this story, I hope, will have a wake up call effect. Every time when the New Truth Elders discussed their strategies, it is so farcical and the “original sin” is certainly a new height.
I really like the ending (save the last 10 second on KSR’s rebirth) - it’s a perfect ending giving us hope out of that huge sacrifice and injecting optimism in the road ahead as the camera panning out to the long road that car drives onto. Rather than its being a Potter-squeeze ending, I’d say it’s in the same vein as the good old “The Terminator”.
Fully agreed with everyone here there’s no weak link as far as acting is concerned. Kim Shin Rok rocks her character as observed by @knewbie and I’m equally impressed by Yang Ik Joon, another non-mainstream actor.
Lastly and seriously, I hate that last clip on the ‘re-birth’ as it breaks the positivity and optimism from the previous sequence. This is certainly a lead to S2 and they’d better be about the monsters’ backstory. (I’m totally fine to delineate the monsters from the main story in watching this season.)

@jorobertson @epyc2010 I feel a bit guilty about discussing the show here. The eps1-3 recaps are labelled "series review" - if that means that eps4-6 will also be recapped, then we'd better move our discussion there! In the meantime, I just wanna say that I think the epilogue, though sinister, actually had me punching the air in glee. For me, it felt like the tide was truly turning. But of course I could be DEAD wrong...
