Main lineup confirmed for new KBS drama Flower Boy Fortune Teller

Seo In-gook, Oh Yeon-seo

Seo In-gook (Doom at Your Service), Oh Yeon-seo (Mad for Each Other), and Kwak Shi-yang (IDOL: The Coup) have confirmed that they’ll be starring in the upcoming KBS drama Flower Boy Fortune Teller. Based on a Kakaopage webtoon by the same name, the drama is a mystery-comedy about the partnership between Seo In-gook and Oh Yeon-seo.

Seo In-gook’s character is a former criminal profiler and a bit of a rebel. He now uses his behavioral profiling skills in his work as a fortune teller to figure out what his clients want. He even provides special after-services to boost his ratings.

Meanwhile, Oh Yeon-seo plays a violent crimes police investigator with three years on the job. She’s all about helping people achieve justice, so she’s forthright, sometimes a bit awkward, but always sincere. Possibly due to her profession, she’s not opposed to going up against people in power and uses her fists when necessary.

Kwak Shi-yang’s character is sexy and rugged on the outside, but innocent and clumsy on the inside. He’s one of the three handsome men who run the Flower Boy Fortune Telling Cafe alongside Seo In-gook.

Directed by Go Jae-hyun (Player) and written by Park Hye-jin (Ruler-Master of the Mask), Flower Boy Fortune Teller will begin airing on KBS in the early half of 2022.

If a drama has Seo In-guk, it’s an automatic must-watch. I’ve literally never skipped a drama of his, and that’s not changing anytime soon. After all, nothing could be worse than Doom

….I may have just jinxed it, haven’t I?

Good for Kwak Shi-yang for escaping the clutches of villain-dom. It’s about time. Oh Yeon-seo is great as well. I certainly don’t have a problem with the cast so far.

Oh god, I forgot to check the writer at first, and now I’m traumatized all over again. Why are the writers of Ruler - Master of the Mask EVERYWHERE, conspiring to ruin dramas with my favourite actors??

Because, whisper, Doom has followed SIG into his next project. (I haven't watched Ruler. Was it so bad?)

Cast is killer. (OYS was ama-h-zing in Mad For Each Other.) OMG. Am I going to be traumatized all over again? Do I need to start lighting hundred millions of sage?

Now that I think about it compared to DAYS Ruler was a peach. The biggest problem with Ruler was they gave all the plot and character development to a supporting character and everyone else was left to be backup dancers.

I think we need more firefighter dramas actually.
And more than just "my dad was wrongly accused in a firefighter scandal 20 years ago and died hashtag tragic backstory tm".
I can only think of one where an MC was a firefighter.

I would be here for more firefighter dramas 😎. I can think two with main character firemen - Naked Fireman (yes, I watched this based on the title) and Please Don’t Date Him.

2

How was Pls dont Date Him @beffels?

0

@parkchuna it was nice - nothing extraordinary but it was pleasant enough. I watched half of it then forgot about it for a while before I came back and watched the other half, so kind of a filler drama for me.

4

@parkchuna filler drama is about right. It was alright and at times cute for a mindless webdrama watch, but I myself wouldn't really say I actually liked it in the long run lol.

written by Park Hye Jin (Ruler Master of the Mask)- Between this and Red Sleeve, I guess it is time to find out if just one of the RMOTM writers is at fault for it, or both.

She must have saved a country in her past life.
RED SLEEVES is familiar enough where we don't have to rely on this writer. I would not complain if she copies the novel or the history word for word, so she doesn't ruin it.

PHJ was the one who thought the female lead needed to cry in every episode and constantly had to be saved in order for the story to move along. She literally said that in an interview with no remorse and KSH had to apologize to the viewers for not meeting the writer's "expectations" of the character.

I saw this on the wall and thought it was about SIG. I may have said "Whoa!" out loud to myself.

9

But maybe this new bean should watch Heirs in order to really get a good overview of his talents and also a crash course in misogynist tropes.

(I'm kidding. Don't torture yourself, but there are some fun threads to read in the recaps.)

9

Sorry for responding in this way as I couldn’t reply directly to Egads.

I hate watched Heirs and have come to loath it with a burning passion. It was indeed so full of misogynistic tropes and toxic classist crap that unfortunately I will never forget it.

7

And one more thing: As far as I am concerned, the only good thing that came out of Heirs was Kim Woobin. Even though he is one of these models turned actors, I find Woobie(😉) a potent actor with an impressive range. While Uncontrollably Fond had many problems, he made me feel his despair keenly. I cried so much watching him and now can’t revisit it as my waterworks start on cue and my heart literally aches. I so look forward to seeing his new work. He has had a difficult and scary few years so hopefully will be able to focus on good and meaningful work going forward.
ps - I also hope that he is a good person who is kind and compassionate in RL.

5

Hello fellow WooBin fan here! And i was quite fond of UF despite the amount of despair Show laid on us.

4

Should I mention I’ve been scanning the comments for Now We Are Breaking Up, hoping for some of your classic comments on the leads?

3

Sorry to disappoint @hebang. I must admit I stayed away as the thought of a 'romance' between a tree and a block of wood was not enticing.

6

As someone who used to read Fine Woodworking magazines and the like, I wanted to say how enticing properly shaped and polished pieces wood can be, but couldn’t think of a finely polished zinger to end the comment, … all I could come up with was comparing little the pretty in the drama to a stroll through an old furniture store full of lovely wooden things. Sigh.

This thread is hilarious I stopped watching Lee Min Ho dramas years ago after I realized what he was. He has two acting states arrogant and vulnerable. That is it. When I first started kdramas, he was very popular so I just watched his dramas until I thankfully educated myself and found dramabeans, so you ky friend are ahead of the curb. SIG is a far far and away superior actor to LMH, so even if the writing is trash, which is possible, you will enjoy SIG and the FL. Welcome to dramabeans.🥰😊

Is FLOWER BOY FORTUNE TELLER a direct translation of MInandang: Sageonsucheob.
MDL is calling this drama: MINAMDANG CASE NOTE.
https://mydramalist.com/702353-minamdang-case-note

I will be there for SIG.
The only FLOWER BOY ‘show’ that I have watched is the very funny FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR (2013) (Park Shin-hye, Yoon Shi-yoon and Kim Ji-hoon) (Viki US).

reply

Required fields are marked *

미남 (Minam) means beautiful male (boy/man)… so flower boy
당 (Dang) is from 무당 means shaman/fortune teller/variations thereof
사건 (Sageon) is incident or in this context, case
수첩 (sucheob) is note

So, yes, a literal translation.

Why does every comedy or romcom must have a mystery these days? Most don't know how to mix both genres.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sadly, you are right. And that is precisely why it gives me pause when a show actually advertises itself as a 'Mystery-Comedy'. Because too often the mystery or backstory simply swallows up the comedy or romance.

I have two hypotheses for this:

First, this phenomenon may simply represent a fad in Kdramas- and in time it will pass. At which point we will see a golden age i Korean Comedy.

Second, the Quants at the networks analyzed the Korean Audience and the writers have been instructed to do this in order to 'reach a wider audience'. Of course the sports analogy for this is tying to play baseball while ski jumping at the same time: It is fundamentally unworkable yet so skilled are the writers that they produce dramas that appear to accomplish this feat. But the natural result is that one gets a show which is less appealing to any audience- which is shown in the ratings. If this is the case then we have to wait until someone dares to break out of the mold and has a comedy that is a rousing success and the Quants are fired.
