Koreans can't get enough of sageuk while I clicked Not For Me option when Netflix tried to force King's Affection on me in their suggestions. I'm thinking to send them a protest letter because I really don't want to see this type of dramas.

My first drama was Kingdom, the only sageuk based drama I could watch, and I naively thought I would like some other. Boy was I wrong! I hate this genre. No zombies, no deal, ha ha.

You are probably the only other person apart from me who do not like Sageuk shows! :-D (I do not even feel like watching a single one of them.) I love Park Eun Bin in Hello my 20s but immediately rejected King's affection too.

I dislike those dramas for the following reasons:

bad cliches. Lovers meet as children. Scheming dowager. Evil shaman. Courtroom politics. Secret identities aka someone LARPs as a masked assassin or poses as the opposite sex (mostly girl to boy) or someone who's believed to be dead returns pretending or believing to be someone else. Nefarious relative tries to cheat the hero(ine) out of the throne. Plot armor that puts GOT to shame. Forced happy ending.

Same look whether the drama is set 200 or 900 years ago. You cannot escape lamp hats, flowery hanboks and white socks. Also, architecture is the same cause all these dramas are filmed on the same set that consists of a royal palace (looks exactly the same as brothel and another government building because it's the same building ha ha), market (1 street with stalls), school (it's basically a barn but ok), pub (school but filmed with dark lenses so we don't notice it's the same room) and some poor character's house which stands in for as many poor character houses as need per drama. There's never sense of kingdom but more like kingdom is 3 blocks within a small village.

Sageuk is fun to poke fun at but not at all fun to watch.

I think these are problems to do with the people who wrote/made those sageuk rather than with the genre per se. It's like dramas about serial killers: there are loads of terrible ones out there, but also many good ones, like the recent Beyond Evil.

Gotta agree that many sageuk don't have the budget to create a more expansive sense of the relevant time and place. But personally I'm not too bothered by that, cos I'm happy as long as you give me good writing, directing and acting.

I agree with you about the cliche part but my reasoning is not the same as the poster of the original comment.

I do not enjoy historical dramas, even well made ones. It is just not my genre, in any language.

@jillofalltrades Tbh I'm not that interested in sageuk either.

I am sure this would be the reaction of my friend Won-deuk (D.O. 100 DAYS MY PRINCE) to folks who do not appreciate the sageuk genre:

I am a sageuk fan and even though I passed on LOVERS OF THE RED SKY and THE KING’S AFFECTION I am eagerly awaiting RED SLEEVE CUFF and INSPECTOR JOY (both will be available on Viki US).

The ratings from what I can see are decent for both RED SKY and AFFECTION.

Even with Sageuks, there are many different types. If you are looking for real historical epics, I highly recommend The Legend (2007) - no zombies but you have mythical beasts to makeup for that.

Some things to consider. If those rumors are all true, it’ll be hard to look at Kim Seon Ho in the same way. It’s not even a question of criminal liability. This is basic moral humane values. Maybe he didn’t need to be a good boy, he just needed to be a decent human being.

The great thing about the internet is how we can all take the moral high ground...sitting, judging people from a distance, with no personal accountability to ourselves at all. Just piling on...personal tragedies be damned...like the bettors in Squid Game. Here, let me have a go. Maybe you don't need to be sitting in judgment about anybody's personal life a) which is none of your business and b) which story you only know one side of anyway. Maybe you just need to find a place in your heart for compassion, you know, the kind of thing a decent human being might offer.

Compassion for his victims, yes. For all the people he fooled and hurt, his colleagues, yes. To give compassion to someone who wasn't even remorseful in the beginning but now apologized only because he got caught in public with no way out and doing it to save his face or career, he doesn't deserve it.

Oh, is that how compassion works? Some people deserve it and other people don't? My bad.

And you somehow know the level of his pain and his remorse and the motivations behind his actions? (And the level of her pain and the motivations behind her actions?) It must be nice to be so certain.

Just to be clear here, I'm not saying that what he did was right, or taking a stance on what anybody did in this relationship scenario for that matter, (although I do take a pretty dim view of setting an internet mob on someone because your relationship went bad - like some modern day Gaston). I am saying that participating in an internet mob - e.g., what you are doing - is wrong.

Let me remind you of one fact if this isn’t clear to you.

Above all this mess between two toxic people in an unhealthy relationship, an unborn child was murdered. LET THAT SINK IN.

People like these need help. Unless they undergo therapy and mental rehabilitation, this kind of behavior will just repeat again and again. This is not resolved by some mere apologies. They need an awakening, and yes, dare I say, a slap on the face. This kind of behavior will persist because of the “compassion” being given to them by their adoring fans. The clamor to give them “second chances” will only hurt this person in the long run.

By some misguided principles, this person chose his career over his unborn child. His fame meant more to him than his unborn child. Think about that.

There were other performers in the same situation who took responsibility for their behavior. I believe it was someone from EXO and some other group. I commend them for making mature decisions.

Now if by calling out Kim Seon Ho’s behavior is what it means by mob mentality to you then so be it.

And if you choose to follow this person’s works, I can’t stop you. You do you. I will hold my viewing measures by higher standards. I have room to allow certain flaws and imperfections, but this is not one of them. It doesn’t matter how good of a performer they are. I'd rather pour investment of my time on someone else.

1

Yes that's EXACTLY how compassion works. The worse the thing you do to someone the less compassion will be given too you. Because the person who does horrible things to someone doesn't show compassion to them either. As simple as that.

0

Anonymous, my dear. You do know attacking other people will not change the facts, right? You can turn the world upside down and attack me all you want. It doesn't change what Seon Ho did.

His behavior was wrong. He has hurt and disappointed many people. He admitted himself in his letter. People call him out on bad behavior. It's as simple as that.

0

And in response to your comment below, which for some reason I can't reply to... (I'm assuming o.O and @.@ are the same person.)

You do know a thing or two about toxic behavior. I'll give you that.

To @.@: I'm not attacking you. You can claim that all you want, but it doesn't change what you did. I am just stating the facts. Your behavior is wrong, and hurtful. I am calling you out on your bad behavior. It's as simple as that.

0

Anonymous. Excuse me. Guess who manipulates, gaslights his significant other or suggest to kill his unborn baby? It’s Kim Seon Ho who did all that. Not me.

0

And you I am sorry but I don't agree with you either. She did nothing wrong.

He’s not my favorite so I’m not really affected with what happened to him. There are other better actors than him. Drama world will go on. The thing that’s most annoying about him is his rabid fan base. The way they’re attacking other people on his behalf will only make things worse for him.
