Premiere Watch: Youth of May, Mine
by missvictrix
It’s a week of premieres to get excited about! Up-and-comer Lee Do-hyun stars in a compelling romance melo, and Lee Bo-young and Kim Seo-hyung co-star in Mine, a chaebol melo. Yes, you read that right. Even if Mine doesn’t turn out amazing (and I’m hoping it does), their combined star power will likely have an effect on planetary alignment.
Youth of May
Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Period, melo, human
Episode count: 12
Reasons to watch: To call a drama a “retro human melodrama” just sounds strange, so let’s flesh out this drama instead, shall we? The setting is the civil unrest that took place in May of 1980 (which is responsible for the “retro” tag), and it gives the drama’s story a really strong, strife-filled backdrop. Let us hope that it adds to the storytelling only, and not to the current discomfiture with the treatment of Korean history by its entertainment media. Our main characters are Lee Do-hyun (a med student), and Go Min-shi, the nurse he falls in love with. We all know melodramas are about highs, lows, and a sea of emotions, but adding the “human” onto that will, I hope, ground the entire thing into something fantastic.
Mine
Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Mystery, thriller, human, melo
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: The thought of Lee Bo-young and Kim Seo-hyung starring together in a drama is enough to get me interested on its own, but throw them into a chaebol melodrama and you have my full attention. Details on the actual meat of this story have been pretty slim, but we do know that both women are married into a very powerful chaebol family. Palace or prison? Heaven or hell? Whether the two sisters-in-law will be at each others’ throats, or become confidants and friends, is left to be seen, but either way I’m betting on a lot of glitz, glam, and gaslighting.

I'm ready for Youth of May to break my heart with a tragic love story.
Can't say the trailers for Mine have excited me much. Looks like a less crazy Penthouse with secrets, lies, chaebols throwing things. I predict another ratings hit for tvN. I'll give it a try since it is female driven.

Mine : Love the actresses! I just hope that it won't be a Goddess of Marriage bis.
Youth of May : It looks nice and warm, I'm ready to suffer.
Imitation : KBS drama, only 12 episodes, a lot of idols but being about different idols groups, it seems normal.

Fingers crossed Youth of May’s brand of melo is closer to that of Just Between Lovers/ Do You Like Brahms! Even if a lot of events happen plot-wise, if handled well with a focus on the emotional developments, it could make a great melo.

I was waiting for Lee Do-Hyun's next drama but I am not in mood for melo. I will wait for reactions from beanies to pick this one. I don't want deal with angst if I can help it.
I will watch Mine as I have already pledged my loyalty to Lee Bo-young and Kim Seo-Hyung. If it derails I know who to blame- the writer.

I wish they could do a better poster for Youth of May. Just finished off from seeing how cool LDH and GMS play their Sweet Home characters to this is, to me, a big let down. I know I know it’s a ‘retro’ human drama but surely there are better creative choices.

There's something about Mine that seems mysteriously intriguing. I'll need to give this a try and see what is going on.

Based on the first two eps of Youth of May, I am upvoting this (subject to melo overkill in future eps, in which case, I might reconsider). So much happened in just these two eps already. Awaiting the recaps!
