Premiere Watch: Mad for Each Other, My Roommate Is a Gumiho

Something about dramaland just wants to stay dark and sad lately — which is why I’m grateful for this week’s new crop of shows. Zany, cute, and comedic, are all coming our way. Let’s hope there’s a gem among these, or at least something that can give us a reason to laugh. Or giggle. Or even just a smile. Come on, dramaland!

Mad for Each Other

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday & Wednesday
Broadcaster: KakaoTV & Netflix
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 13 (30 min. episodes)

Reasons to watch: I haven’t been super impressed with KakaoTV’s recent web-drama-drama experiments, but after Mad for Each Other dropped some of the best (as in: loud and zany) promo material I’ve seen in a while, I was intrigued! This short drama is about two damaged souls, one a guy with anger management issues (Jung Woo) and the other a woman with anxiety and paranoia (Oh Yeon-seo). I love the wacky vibes the drama seems to be going for, but when our subject matter is social and emotional issues (and maybe even diagnosed mental illness), things can get sticky fast. We’ll have to see the way the drama handles it, but in the meantime, I’ll just let myself get a little bit excited for something colorful and different.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Whether I’ve been burned by Jang Ki-yong or not (Kill It, Born Again, etc.), I always come back hoping for better. Will this drama be the hit he’s been trying for? In My Roommate Is a Gumiho, Jang Ki-yong plays a 999-year-old gumiho who is forced to live with Hyeri after she accidentally swallows his fox bead. A complete tone change from our most recent gumiho-themed drama (Tale of the Nine Tailed), My Roommate Is a Gumiho takes a decidedly cute and rom-com approach to the matter. We can hope for some great chemistry to keep this drama’s premise afloat, but my real question is: how will the script be? It’s a webtoon adaptation, and a joint effort from two of the writers that did You Who Forget Poetry… so a girl can hope, right?

I love when Lee Hye-ri is paired up with people her age, so looking forward to a cute rom-com in My Roommate Is a Gumiho.

I haven't been impressed with Kakao TV's efforts either but they are short, easy watches at least. I'll give Mad for Each Other a try.

Fantasy is just not my favorite genre. Unless the reviews for My Roommate Is a Gumiho are amazing, and I hear Hyeri and Jang Ki-yong's acting has improved, it's a pass for me.

I'm looking forward to Gumiho cause of my girl Kang Hanna. She deserves a decent storyline and screentime. I did not that the writers had worked on You Who Forgot Poetry. That makes me partially hopeful.

Just hoping that gumiho's tails will actually pop out every now and then (and be fluffy), and not just once as a terrible fire CGI (side-eyeing TOTNT)

I think Gumiho's leads have good chemistry, but the trailers are way over the top and kill all interest a person can have in the drama.

I will be watching My Roommate Is a Gumiho because of Jang Ki Yong - whom I loved in Search WWW. I am also tickled pink to see Kang Ha Na and Kim Do Wan have a love line in this drama as there was definite chemistry between them in the last episode of Start-Up! I was pleasantly surprised by it at the time, and kind of wished it had been developed further (noona romance for the win, hahahaha).

Also, I think the second male lead (Bae In Hyuk?) was in XX? That was a gem - short and sweet.

So I watched the first episode of My roommate is a Gumiho. It was quite funny and entertaining, plot moves along fast, and there are nice clever caveats to keep everyone on their toes. Sure a gumiho is magical, but there's always a drawback to the magic. Hyeri is both entertaining and funny. She sometimes uses that extremely adorable pouty voice that is so endearing, but only once in a while.

Like Full House, and the current Doom at your Service, they use some conflict to get the main characters to end up living together. Sure the trope is as old as time, but it never stops being fun.
