Premiere Watch: Dark Hole, Bossam: Steal the Fate

Dramas, incoming! This week we have the latest from OCN (who am I kidding, it’s Lee Jun-hyuk we care about), and a new sageuk starring Jung Il-woo. Very different genres, very big question marks — which dramas (or actors) will you be tuning in for?

Dark Hole

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Horror, thriller
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: OCN’s thriller Dark Hole tells the story of a mysterious sinkhole whose noxious gases start to mutate the human population. That’s quite a logline, Show! Well, if one thing is certain, it’s that this post-apocalyptic thriller has definitely found the right broadcaster — and I would even say the right writer. Jung Yi-do previously brought us creepy and intense fare like Save Me and Hell is Other People, so I’m pretty convinced this will be more scary and compelling than it will be campy. Also, the cast is really refreshing. We’ve got Kim Ok-bin playing a righteous detective who believes in the human spirit, and Lee Jun-hyuk as a controversial reporter who might just be our hero and our comic relief in one (because I’m ready for that!).

Bossam: Steal the Fate

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: MBN
Genre: Sageuk
Episode count: 20

Reasons to watch: If I was being totally honest, the real reason to watch Bossam: Steal the Fate is Jung Il-woo, who, given the right project, can be quite entertaining to watch. In Bossam he plays a lowlife who gambles, fights, and steals widows for money — a practice known as bossam, or bride-kidnapping, where a widow is stolen/given for money. That sounds like some ripe territory for drama! If Bossam does things right, it should be full of conflicted emotional ties, dire straits, and all sorts of subterfuge — fingers crossed. Also starring are Kwon Yuri and Shin Hyun-soo.

I've really been longing for some more ~serious~ sageuks these recent years, but I'm looking forward to bossam, especially given the real historical context in regards to widows. Really loved Jung Ilwoo in Haechi (which was supremely underrated btw).

Same here.
Sadly we only have writer Jeong Hyun-min and Kim Yi-young left who would give us a more series sageuk.
Chungmuro has Lee Joon-ik. I'd love another action sageuk like "War of the Arrows" from Kim Han-min.

Anyway, I'm ready for "Bossam."

Present! I hope BOSSAM gets recapped but I doubt it (because it's an MBN drama). I'm ready to hijack a thread.

HAECHI (2019) a was Jung Il-woo’s comeback drama after his military discharge and he gave a terrific performance. HAECHI a is my only JIW drama. I passed on SWEET MUNCHIES. I am really looking forward to seeing him again in BOSSAM.

Bossam seems promising. Writer & PD have between them done several shows that I liked to varying degrees and only one that I didn't.
Dark Hole -- not so much, but I'll give it a try anyway.

DARK HOLE might be good but the subject is not my cup of tea so I will be giving it a pass.

I will definitely give BOSSAM a try. As you said it really does look promising.

Thank you all who put in a request for BOSSAM at Viki.

I'm not a fan of this type of fantasy sageuks but I love what I've seen from the PD (TREE WITH DEEP ROOT, PAINTER OF THE WIND) and writer of "BE MELODRAMATIC."
Sageuk is Kim Yoo-jung's forte so I'm definitely going to watch.

I really like sageuks. I also like fantasy, but am often disappointed with shows that fit the latter category. I really wouldn't mind a good fantasy sageuk.

I only know Director Jang Tae-yoo from TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS (2011) which I finally watched and loved last year. He certainly can hang his hat on that alone. 2016 was when I first started delving into the world of kdramas. At the time I remember reading about what a phenomenon Director Jang's MY LOVE FROM THE STAR (2013/14) had become.
I haven't seen BE MELODRAMATIC but I know it is well regarded.

"PAINTER OF THE WIND" was Moon Geun-young's Daesang drama. She was only 21 years old and she is still the youngest to win one.

I think we are in good hands with the PD and writer.

I have added both BOSSAM and HONG CHUN GI to my watch list- my wife loved Kim Yoo-jung in her last sageuk and will be pleased to watch another one. Even if the script is not the best Kim Yoo-jung is talented enough to make it work.

I agree. I got some good Cdrama recommendations from OldLawyer's wife.

I'm currently watching THE LONG BALLAD by the way (set in 626 AD, the early reign of Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong). It's nice to see the Tang side of things. Goguryeo was the least of their worries at this time LOL.

3

@wishfultoki

I'm currently watching "THE LONG BALLAD" "COURT LADY" and slow burning "THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG 'AN." All are set during the dang dynasty.

I've become a Tang fangirl thanks to the magnificent and mind blowing details in "THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG 'AN." That's a one in every dynasty drama!

I love it that I'm not feeling lost in the capital (Chang 'an) and some of the Tang laws are familiar even the ancient football game (Cuju) in eps 1 of "THE LONG BALLAD."
I made a post on my wall comparing it to the Cuju game in "HWARANG." Either the rules is different in Silla or they did it wrong lol.

I'm enjoying the other 2 shows especially Zhao Lu Si's Li Le Yan/Princess Yong An in "THE LONG BALLAD."

2

@kiara My my I’m so happy whenever someone says they enjoy Zhao Lusi’s performance in The Long Ballad. There has been criticism of hers being one-note but I actually think her mannerisms suit this type of wuxia well. I’ve skimmed a few of her previous works and think if she goes the serious wuxia route she does have potential, a lot more than other genres she’s been acting in so far.

I am embarrassed to admit that I have not seen a Kim You-jung drama. RED SKY will take care of that.

Yay for VIKI! I put in requests for BOSSAM too. :)

For a quick Yoo-jung fix, try the drama special THE DIRGE SINGER. I haven't seen any of her recent dramas so I'm looking forward to RED SKY.

3

Thanks for the recommendation Toki.
I am on it. A one episode 2014 KBS Drama Special available on KBS World TV on YouTube.

Kim Yoo-jung is one of more favorite actresses- a great talent with a truly professional attitude. She is only 21 years old BUT has more acting experience than most actresses who are far older- she has been acting since she was six. Her first 'mature' role was as the lead in MOONLIGHT DRAWN WITH CLOUDS where the ML was Park Bo-gum. That was also a Sageuk, but she can also do well with rom-coms- I loved her character in CLEAN WITH PASSION FOR NOW.

2

Yay!!! Hoping it's recapped quickly and we can watch it the next day.

I don't really care for sageuks, but I'll give Bossam a try for having a different plot than most. Twenty episodes though....

Reading the description, Dark Hole could easily be BAD, but it has Lee Jun-hyuk and the writer is good so crossing my fingers for some good, scary, post-apocalyptic fun.

Re DARK HOLE. Did this drama go back to rewrite?
The information I had on Lee Joon-hyuk’s character was that he was an ex-cop and now a tow truck driver. A couple of articles (like the one above) refer to LJH’s character as a reporter.
I would really prefer seeing LJH as a tow truck driver if given a choice.
A “suitless” LJH.

I'll give both a try, but I'm having Saeguk fatigue and at 20 episodes, I expect it to become about politics in episode 7 and us to find out Jung Il Woo is the illegitimate son of a nobleman or the king. SIGH. That being said I am excited for dark hole, I hope it is good.

Dark Hole sounds a little too close to current events for comfort -- with mRNA based vaccines that permanently mutate your DNA, and are only approved for emergency experimental use, being pushed on the world's population. Hundreds of women have reported that their periods have changed or completely stopped after taking the vaccine. But of course we're not allowed to say such things.

Woah, woah, woah. PLEASE stop spreading harmful, false information.

mRNA vaccines DO NOT alter your DNA. Anyone who's taken high school biology should be familiar with the central dogma of genetics. Repeat after me, "DNA encodes RNA, RNA encodes protein."

mRNA vaccines work by introducing mRNA to your immune system, and that mRNA will encode the protein necessary for the immune cells to fight the pathogen that the vaccine is targetting. It allows your body to adapt and learn how to fight the virus without actually introducing the virus itself into your body. It's revolutionary technology and is MUCH safer than allowing yourself to be susceptible to COVID-19. IT DOES NOT ALTER YOUR DNA.

Menstruation can be affected by literally any stressor to your body, and yes, a vaccine is a stressor. My menstruation changes if I'm experiencing mental stress, if I travel across timezones, if I change my exercise habits, if I become ill, the list can go on and on and on. Yes, research as a whole should try harder to incorporate menstruation data in their studies, but none of this is unexpected.

Need I tell you what could happen to your body if you, um, get COVID? And considering how contagious the disease is, if it goes unchecked you and everyone else WILL get it, and the health risks from contracting COVID are much, much greater than the health risks of any of the vaccines.

Quite literally any medical intervention has its risks, but the reason we still practice medicine in our societies is because the risks associated with carefully studied and tested interventions are much less than the risks associated with letting disease run rampant. This goes for every facet of medicine, and every facet of modern life. We as a global society can always do better, and there is plenty of room for improvement in medical research, but spouting ridiculous anti-vaxxer sentiment helps no one and only hurts everyone.

Everyone is free to believe what they like, and read or spread whatever information they like. Everyone has the right to obtain all the information, weigh all sides and make their own decision. I am not "anti-vaxx" I simply do not trust the establishment that is so afraid of any information getting to people that doesn't follow the party line that they shut down anyone who offers a different view. Truth is not afraid of opposition. You and I are not being told the truth about what these vaccines are. That is my opinion. You are welcome to hold a different opinion and express it as much as you like.

There's no opinion when it comes to science. There's just conclusions the body of evidence currently supports and new conclusions if the weight of evidence changes. What you wrote was simply flat out wrong.

Well said. However, many, if not most, scientists advocate for their conclusions. It's natural for a person to argue that his or her conclusions are correct.

This is wrong. A scientist must be open-minded and always assume a mistake occurred somewhere.

Many scientists also enjoy "entering the public square" to advocate for their conclusions. That's fine, but it's not science when they do; they're making a judgement-call. Value judgements depend on an individual's values, which come from family, culture and the individual's lifetime of experience.

Mindy has talked science.
It’s not what she believes.
It’s science.
Like water boils at 100ºC.
If you believe water boils at 50°C you can still believe it, but it is not true or a scientific fact.

Having a sinkhole as the villain in Dark Hole makes me giggle. As a student I recall a field trip to a sinkhole in central Florida. The only drama stemmed from the fact that it opened under a Porsche dealership and several cars were slowly added to the pit. No mutations reported, but who would notice in Florida?

Dark Hole sounds ridiculous, but I like the writer’s previous works and would watch a Lee Jun-hyuk drama no matter what. He’s a terrific actor and it’s about time he gets leading roles.

I also definitely want to check out Bossam. Not just for sageuk Jung Il-woo (where he shines brightest imo), but also because the subject matter is genuinely interesting to me. Widows had it rough during the Joseon dynasty.

Dark hole reminds me of this one episode of Fringe (sci fi series from 10 years ago)- a virus was going around and it came from really deep in the earth and was an old virus that was - in the story- responsible for wiping out animals tens of thousands of years ago . Makes me wonder if something like that could happen since the glaciers are melting and who the heck knows what kind of crap may be trapped in there for tens of thousands of years. .

Oh mi gosh, i am so loving Dark Hole. I binged the first two episodes immediately. If it continues in this wonderfully perfect way, it'll become one of my faves. It takes the whole concept of the people of the Han to a whole nother level. What do we have? A drama about a serial killer, weird celestial upheaval, and a strange smoke which turns people into monsters seeking revenge by entering their eyes and stirring up their hurt from old grievances. The smoke comes from a Dark Hole connected to the depth of the earth and from jewel-like containers scattered in the forest. The Dark Hole is where some demonic voice lives and commands revenge to people who carry around grudges and offenses. But it's a blind rage that makes the person affected hallucinate that some innocent stranger near them is the object of their grudge. Oh my gosh, what isn't there to love!!!! The themes and subtexts of this drama is what fuels good makjang. And of course there would be a serial killer around...because kdrama serial killers have grudges up the wazoo. But a grudge against those who were trying to be kind to her?

From what i can tell, if the murderous anger isn't allowed to take the person over, then the person becomes immune. Also, it seems that if you can endure bullying and live a somewhat healed life, you might be able to escape it. Not sure though because this is only the second episode and worldbuilding hasn't been established. There are a few put-upon people walking around. Evil bosses and cruel bullies treating coworkers badly. But there are also sad moms who lost their kids. And the drama even shows that there are people who take the snippiness of their bosses in stride so maybe those people will be immune as well.

I'm suspecting the put-upon folks in this drama triumph or are saved in time before the grudge makes them kill someone. Ooh, and when the person filled with rage dies, they seem able to come back from the dead. So there's a lot of free-floating rage going around.
But what about that angry shaman who was bullied by the local goddess spirit into being a shaman or else said spirit/idol would kill her and her mother? Then the idol/demon for some strange reason took away her powers and shaman cannot figure out why. Shaman was already questionable but now that she feels forsaken by the goddess who forsook her and has made a kind of deal with the new evil from the pit, it seems she has some link or understanding with the evil in the pit of the earth. But am not sure what her job will be? To get recruits? But there's also that evangelist who is trying to recruit people to "New Sky Diety." Not sure how he fits in. Can religion help or hurt grudges? The drama is already weirding me out. And i am loving how it all works.
