Kim So-hyun battles for Goguryeo in new teaser for River Where the Moon Rises

A new video teaser has been released for KBS’s upcoming sageuk River Where the Moon Rises, featuring actors Kim So-hyun (Tale of Nokdu), Ji-soo (When I Was the Most Beautiful, and Kang Haneul (When the Camellia Blooms).

As an adaptation of the Korean folktale, “Princess Pyeonggang and the Fool On Dal,” the drama is set during the historical period of Goguryeo with Kim So-hyun playing the central character Princess Pyeonggang while Ji-soo takes on the role of On Dal. The drama, however, deviates from the original folklore to give greater focus to the political conflict within Goguryeo. Kim So-hyun’s Princess Pyeonggang is an ambitious and trained warrior, fighting to restore the country’s greatness and become it’s next ruler.

In a supporting role, Kang Haneul plays Ji-soo’s father Onhyeop. The character is said to be an important figure in the drama’s story as one of Goguryeo’s most powerful people and will play an influential part in the early half of the drama.

The newly released teaser begins with Ji-soo first seeing Kim So-hyun in the woods; they have a classic meet-cute moment when Kim accidentally falls on top of him. They stop together at a cliffside where Kim So-hyun basks in the sun and gentle wind. Ji-soo smiles as he admires her beauty. A text screen appears introducing Ji-soo’s character, “The general who made history through his love story, On Dal.”

Cut to an older and somber Kang Haneul who scans the horizon and gives a small but sardonic smile before the camera cuts away. Elsewhere, we see Kim So-hyun racing on horseback towards a battle and fiercely takes part in the fight. The text screen introduces her as, “The princess whose life was devoted to Goguryeo, Pyeonggang.”

The teaser comes to a close as it returns back to the woods where Ji-soo is with Kim So-hyun. He sadly embraces her in a hug and confesses, “You are my Goguryeo and my country.”

Writing for the drama is Han Ji-hoon (9.9 Billion Won Woman) and directing will be helmed by PD Yoon Sang-ho (Wind and Cloud and Rain, Different Dreams).

KBS’s next Monday-Tuesday drama River Where the Moon Rises is currently set to premiere in February 2021, following Secret Royal Inspector.

She has matured quite a bit. Could be a combination of growing up plus having to do a lot of action scenes.

I'm still doing double takes with her action sequence, I honestly thought it was an older actress playing a character in KHN's backstory.

He could be but I have my doubts. Think his arc is only limited to flashbacks but you never know. Would have loved to see both Kim so-hyun and Kang ha-neul in a scene together.

I think his arc will be similar to Kim So Hyun's arc in Goblin. She was credited as cameo at first, but she appeared more than half of the drama in flashbacks (there was a discussion back then, people said that she looked more like a regular character than cameo). Maybe the same will happen with Kang Ha Neul's character.

Seeing KHN like that made me want him in a new drama in a charismatic role!

It's sad that Lee Ji Hoon doesn't appear in this teaser because he looked so handsome and charismatic on the pictures.

KHS looks beautiful. I hope she will be good in the fight scenes. It's not only the choreography but the energy and the charisma. I loved IU in Hotel del Luna but I didn't find she was convincing in the sword fights... But KHS always shines in sageuk, so it's a detail.

Kim So Hyun looks amazing! I'm curious about this take on the Ondal and Pyeonggang story. Would she be personally training Ondal to be a warrior?

I'm always surprised by how Kang Haneul sometimes looks 10 years younger than his age and sometimes 10 years older than his age.

Agree with KHN looking younger or older than his age. He is older in real life than the teenaged female lead in Angel Eyes but passed as a younger high school student. In The Heirs he was believable as a "senior" to Kim Tan and Young-do, yet he is younger than Kim Woo-bin and Lee Min-ho.

I was a little surprised that Kim So-Hyun took a Sageuk role on KBS again, right after The Tale of Nokdu.
Well, this is in the Goguryeo period... Different era.
I'll definitely check it out.

It looks like several Sageuk dramas are coming up in the first quarter of 2021.
This, Jang Dong-Yoon's Joseon Exorcist, and Ahn Hyo-Seop's Red sky (Hong Chun Gi)...

I've always thought she would be the next big actor to dominate kdrama land for the next 10 or so years.

Required fields are marked *

I think she is on her way. She keeps landing lead roles year after year. So, she is dominating and is one of the most recognizable faces of the modern Hallyu era. Remember that she is in an era where she is not only competing her peers but also actresses who are way older than her. So, the fact that she is still in the scene is a testament that the industry trusts and supports her.

Maybe, she needs that one mega project ala DOTS, MLFTS or CLOY to launch into a new level of superstardom. Hope her alleged new agency (Jun Ji Hyun's agency) will help her achieved that considering that they are also housing Park Ji Eun, CLOY and MLFTS' writer.

I would definitely recommend watching Page Turner. It's short but showcases some of her acting and a preview to their chemistry. Personally I feel she's doing a good job building her acting roles and experimenting. Her last two dramas were especially enjoyable and her acting has grown considerably. I do think she is still young and has plenty of time to become bigger.

Required fields are marked *

No need to wait for 10 years. She is getting out of her shell now. She only need the right people who can manage her and promote her dramas right. Also best script offers. She only need to take one step for her to catapult into stardom. That is a major big hit drama or movie that is both best acclaimed domestically and in international.

Required fields are marked *

That is right. That is the reason (I guess) why she is switching agencies. Her previous agency has no enough clout to secure a big projects for So Hyun. Maybe the switch to Culture Depot (rumoured new agency) will help her snatch big projects from industry's best. Remember that Culture Depot houses Jun Ji Hyun and Park Ji Eun. So, her future is very bright there. Hope that she confirms it soonest.

Yeah I also hope they treat her the best. This is a great chance after all these years. Culture Depot under studio dragon which also under them is Hwa & Dam pictures housing the best directors and writers. They only need to look at her. I hope her Pyeonggang character could make them realize that she is the best young actress they could ever get. Hurry before the girl become more expensive.

On Dec. 21 I started TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS (2011) (Viki-US) and was immediately sucked into the story. The performances have been outstanding and since the source material is a novel I don’t have to worry too too much about history since it is dealing with possibilities not probabilities. It is fun watching in sequence with @headsno2’s recaps. As I scan the comments I have run into a few beanies who are still around lol.
Watching TREE has impacted my live viewing of the three dramas I am currently watching so I am a bit in a catch-up mode for TUC, AWAKEN and RUN ON. I am enjoying all three.

@sicarius,
Definitely. It will be great! Btw. I noticed your comment on the recap for TREE’s episode 4 (I think). I am currently through episode 7.
@ndlessjoie, there is certainly precedent for going the ‘hijack’ route but I would be surprised if RIVER was not recapped.
In 2019 @lollypip recapped both THE CROWNED CLOWN and HAECHI which was yeoman service!! Thank you again @lollypip. Both dramas were M/T and they overlapped for almost 5 weeks. Let me tell you it was a challenge just to watch both of them simultaneously for 5 weeks. HAECHI presented challenges in the way is was filmed (like dark, oh my!)
Anyway enough going down memory lane.

3

@marcusnyc20 It was episode 6!! I reacted to it more on my wall but that will be a wee way back on there now, I think.

This is why Kang Ha Neul is going to be an actor that's going to have longevity. Right after WTCB, he could just do another Yong-shik 2.0. Instead, he chose to do a cameo role which is a total 180.His ability to morph into the characters he's played makes him exciting to watch.

Sometimes, he looks his age, and other times more older. Respect his choices a lot, tons of actors his age or older tend to play it safe. So refreshing for an actor in Korea to actually stay away from the public spotlight when they're not shooting, and focus on his craft. This is basically a KHN praising post lol.
