Shin Hye-sun becomes royal in new promos for Queen Cheorin
by tccolb
New stills and posters have been released for tvN’s upcoming fusion sageuk Queen Cheorin, featuring the main cast: Shin Hye-sun (Angel’s Last Mission: Love), Kim Jung-hyun (Crash Landing on You), Bae Jong-ok (Graceful Family), and Kim Tae-woo (The Spies Who Loved Me).
The drama is centered around Shin Hye-sun’s character, a 21st century man whose soul somehow gets transported back in time to the Joseon dynasty–and he wakes up in the body of Queen Cheorin. As a fish out of water in many respects, he stumbles his way through the new day-to-days in the palace and struggles to not arouse the suspicions of the royal family. But he makes his confession in his poster’s tagline: “You’re going to be shocked, but try not to be too shocked. The truth is, I’m a man.”
Queen Cheorin’s husband, King Cheoljong, is played by Kim Jung-hyun. He’s a man of many faces and appears to be merely a puppet king. In truth, though, he is very perceptive and sharp, and hides his true intentions behind his many masks. Catching on to something being not quite right with his queen, he remarks on his poster: “There is no one else as strange and unique as the queen. It’s almost as if she came from another world.”
Bae Jong-ok takes on the role of the dowager queen, she’s the true power in Joseon and pulls all the strings behind the throne. On her poster, she makes her ambitions plain: “Trying to maintain power is in the same vein of trying to maintain beauty and youth.”
Her brother, played by Kim Tae-woo, is also a man after power and he strives to keep their family in the highest seat in Joseon. The tagline on his poster speaks to his calculative perspective, “For us, who you are is not as important and who you ought to be.”
Directed by PD Yoon Sung-shik (Hwarang, Gaksital) and co-written by Park Kye-ok (Doctor Prisoner) and Choi Ah-il (Lovers of Six Years), tvN’s next weekend drama Queen Cheorin is currently set to premiere next month on December 12.

This gives me Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo flashbacks and I don't know if that's comforting. Sounds like the usual sageuk power grab struggle conspiracy trope but I love Shin Hye Sun and Kim Jung Hyun too much to let it pass.
Being a Korean show, I doubt they'll go really wild on the romance like they did in the Chinese original (I actually can't remember the name of the show, I didn't watch it but I hear there was some LGBT representation there). Also, I don't know how they're going to tackle the fantasy element: time travel just doesn't happen for fun. And that's not even considering the ramifications of the time traveller's actions on the future she came from.
Will definitely watch it. Will I enjoy it? That's for the writer to decide.

Yes, it reminds me the chinese series "Go, princess, go", too.

I'll give it a go too.
Go Princess, Go was an odd duck. It's a cheaply-produced but fun time travel, body-switch, quasi-BL costume c-drama. The "FL" was a charming rake. He's a 21st century womanizer and thrilled at the prospect of playing with the other ladies in the harem. The actress playing the FL looked like she was having a ball, playing a beautiful, butch princess.

Hmm, this drama uses a portrayal of King Cheoljong that is wholly different from the conventional historical view. Does anyone know if there is a revisionist movement with respect to Cheoljong or is this a just a case of gratuitous artistic license?
I also smile at the thought of international kdrama fans getting viewer history whiplash between this and Wind, Cloud, Rain.

From the first announcement of QUEEN CHEORIN aka MR. QUEEN on Viki I was concerned where the comedy was going to come from given the state of Joseon at that time.
I will probably be throwing my lot in with the other upcoming sageuk/comedy: SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR with Kim Myung-soo, Nara and Lee Tae-hwan scheduled to premiere 21 Dec.

Yes. It is on Viki (USA)'s "Coming Soon'" list.
On Viki it was first listed as NO TOUCH PRINCESS. Now it is listed as MR. QUEEN. Go figure.

@gem28,
Of course! Lets go back in time. RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK aired May-July, 2017. It was my second complete sageuk with HWARANG earlier in the year being my first. I began my entry into the sageuk genre/world with those two. You see what I started off with. I had nothing to compare them with so it has been all uphill since then. Sageuk has become one of my favorite genres.
There are many dramas today that would love to have RULER's ratings which ranged from 8.8%-17.6% with an average of 11.5%.
I am wishing Kim Myun-soo (L) well and perhaps Nara will be a good influence.

For something like this, I wonder why they didn't just go with a fictional ruler. Then you don't have to worry about the dude dying at a young age or the writer taking too many liberties with history.
I'm going to be checking out both. Queen Cheorin is Sat-Sun and Secret Royal Inspector is Mon-Tues.

I wonder if Cheoljong has been portrayed on film before. His story is intriguing—the wiki page says he grew up in exile illiterate and in "wretched poverty." It would be fascinating to see these aspects of his reall life played out ...

Good question @tsutsuloo. I will toss the question to a couple of my sageuk sages.
@kiara and @wishfultoki,
Do you know if King Cheoljong's life has been dramatized on film or TV?

@marcusnyc20/bong-soo.
Sorry late to the party as always.
No not yet and I'm not sure we'll get much on his life story from this drama either.
There is quite a few good sageuks like the DUO, Jung Ha-yeon's EMPRESS MYEONGSEONG (2001) especially with much details from his era but none focused on him.

As far as I know, he is referenced or is a peripheral character in the numerous dramatizations of Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong's reigns (most recently Wind, Cloud, Rain) but I believe this is the first drama or film which has him as a lead character.

Thanks for the reminder @halofan68. How could I forget WCR aka KING MAKER: THE CHANGE OF DESTINY. In the early episodes King Cheoljong is on the throne but dying.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.
You know, I'm not expecting any profound explorations of gender and sexuality but when it comes down to it, this is the most gay any mainstream kdrama has gone so far with its main characters so I'm happy.
Bring it on.

Bae Jong-ok was wickedly good as Ms. Han Graceful Family. Did they have liquid eyeliner in Josean? Because a good antagonist needs her eye makeup to be on point.

One of the few kdramas I've looked forward to this year! Mostly because I found the original Go Princess Go to have been a blast and also one of my favorite k-actresses Shin Hye-sun 😍 I hope she goes all out like the cdrama actress did.
Also, this is one of the closest LGBT+ mainstream kdramas out there. I really hope they go all out and don't pull their punches. 😆

It will be a lot and lots of royal madness, conspiracy, betrayal, danger and awful politics, but just in order to see Shin Hye sun acting like being a man in the body of a woman, wow!!! I think I will tune in. I just love her! And it makes me crazy already to think how that conflict can be resolve in both timelines....

I knew it didn't mentioned Choi Jin-hyuk as chef Jang Bong-hwan... so I'm excited to see him before his Mouse (TvN) era. I knew he'll appeared as Mr. Princess cameo, originally that he supposed to be a male lead character but unfortunately, I can't wait for the real outcomes.

This is a remake of Go princess go right?? I remember about news that Korean company got the right for it like 3-4 years ago.
The Chinese one is so Funn, because the sexuality aspect to be explored. Lol is like a soft BL.
Zhang tianai was very good in C version. I know Shin Hyesun will do a great job.

The FL lead for Go Princess Go was outstanding and uninhibited in her portrayal of that character. I could totally believe she was a "man". It was a blast and so fun to watch. Shin Hye Sun is mesmerizing in most of her roles and so I will give it a try.
