Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…
stroopwafel
Vagabond: The show’s really benefited from the move back to Korea from Morocco for several reasons. The best thing is that we finally get Shin Sung-rok. Another plus is that we don’t have to deal with any more stilted English scenes. Now that we’re in Korea, it’s become obvious that Suzy isn’t actually considered a badass agent by her peers–she’s seen as a bit of a screw up. She’s much more believable as a passionate agent who wants to prove herself and follow her conscious. Though I still see Vagabond’s weaknesses, the show’s oddly entertaining. I may roll my eyes at some scenes, but I can’t seem to stop watching.
Melting Me Softly: I think a generous description of this show would be to call it madcap. If I were being less generous, I’d call it inconsistent and so all over the place that it was whiplash-inducing. Ji Chang-wook is magnetic and it’s great to be watching him again, but I was disappointed by the premiere. All the little sound effects and gags…it felt more suited to a web drama than a cable show. Sparingly, over the top gags are fun, but the show is so heavy-handed in every way. I don’t know if the show knows what kind of story they want to tell, but I hope that’s figured out soon because I’m curious to see how Ji Chang-wook and Won Jin-ah adjust to living in 2019 after the deep freeze.

Tale of Nokdu: I haven’t seen much of Kim So-hyun’s character yet as I only had time to watch the first episode before this post. 🙁 But from what I’ve seen of the first hour, the show is bright, zippy, and funny. Normally, the heroine cross-dressing in sageuk comes with life-threatening consequences (as they’re supposed to stay at home or get married and not meddle with Men’s Business). I was curious how they’d up the stakes for Nokdu who’s already an expert swordsman and can take care of himself. I mean, sure, he can be kicked out, but that’s probably it? Enter the strong, loud guards with no respect for their fellow widow’s personal space. LOL It’s hilarious how Nokdu got his ass kicked and is now doubly terrified of being caught, not just because he’ll fail his mission, but because he really is scared of the trio. I’m hoping they won’t be in on his secret yet after the first episode’s cliffhanger. Am I a terrible person for enjoying Nokdu quaking in his skirts too much? (Yes. I don’t care. Give me more widow guard shenanigans!)
When the Camellia Blooms: I can’t help but be delighted at Yong-shik’s tiny mannerisms and expressions that all add up to this adorkable buffoon-in-love. I know Kang Ha-neul is actually a bit dorky offscreen, but contrast Yong-shik with the perfectionist worker Baek-ki in Misaeng and angry jock Hyun-jae in To the Beautiful You–not to mention a ton of other characters he’s played–and it makes his current performance all the more amazing for how it’s uniquely Yong-shik. Storywise, the appearance of Dong-baek’s mom is totally unexpected. (Also, yay Lee Jung-eun!) I thought dealing with the whole town, Joker, and the romance would be plot enough. But this new twist helps me understand the depth of Dong-baek’s self-hate and why, when faced with another chance at happiness, she’d push it away. Her mother’s abandonment plus years of society making her feel inadequate for being an orphan really did a number on her. I can see why she gave up on herself and just want to be the best mother to Pil-gu. But that lack of self-love is also causing some emotional damage to her son, so I’m glad that Dong-baek’s character is slowly learning to fight for things that matter to her. Gooooo hippo!!!
Be Melodramatic: What a weird way to end a show. But it’s so in keeping with Be Melo’s sorta meta, sorta sitcom vibe. I’m trying to figure out why I’m not as devastated as when Age of Youth ended… and I think it’s because these characters are much more mature/seasoned? We’ve seen them grow from and figure out a lot of day to day problems contrasted with their tumultuous twenties. So when the credits rolled around, I’m not worried about their futures anymore. Though I’m still curious where they’ll be ten years from now and wouldn’t say no to another season.
Graceful Family: Still my crackjang. I’m just entertained by this “normal” family’s squabbles heightened by having their own elite spy agency to handle affairs and a crazy heiress to mix things up further. Also, Im Soo-hyang and Lee Jang-woo have the most perfect, slow burning chemistry (respect is sexy, y’all). I don’t know how I’ll handle the squeeing once they fall in love in earnest. Maybe spend my whole day liking gifs and watching YouTube MVs of them. I mean, more than what I’m doing now…

EXTRAORDINARY YOU: Definitely an interesting start. Not quite sure about the female character. But I do appreciate that she’s acting like someone her age. (ep. 1-2)
MELTING ME SOFTLY: First half was draggy, second half picked up a bit. Laughed a few times, though the humor is not great and not what I was expecting in this drama. (ep. 1)
THE TALE OF NOKDU: This one is the most promising of the bunch. I’m just really hoping that the romance will be more slow-burn than it seems like it’s going to be. I’d love for the reveal to happen in a few more episodes. The politics and flashbacks are absolutely horrendous. Why include all that boring stuff when we don’t even know our characters yet!? (ep. 1-4)

I'm loving the Tale of Nok Du so far. It's fun and the leads have great chemistry.
Also, I started My country and I'm hooked, it's so good. I didn't think that I would enjoy watching two sageuk dramas at the same time, but boy, I fell for Yang Se Jong immediately and I'm already invested. He's perfect to play the good hearted hero, with a sick younger sister that he has to protect, his best friend who's destined to become a rival, and his instant connection with Seol Hyun's character. 1st episode did a great job setting up the story. I can't wait to see more.
Also, I watched the J-drama Nagi's long vacation, which was absolutely delicious and heartwarming. It's the story of a girl fighting social pressure and learning how to assert herself and live the way she wants. Very inspiring. 🧡

I havenit watched much this week but managed to finish my oldie.
Wonderful Life (13-16)
I think they ran out of material in the last two weeks of this show and decided to throw in the cancer which really came out of nowhere. The only thing that made sense about it was Seung Wan’s guilt and feeling that he is being punished for not wanting Shin Bi at first. In typical old style drama fashion the annoying second female lead was redeemed in the end with her behavior explained and changed. I would have never guessed the name of the drama originated from omelette rice. Overall it was an okay show. Alas, no unexpected surprises in the cast.
One note: after the time skip the two female leads’ hair was cut. I must say it really didn’t suit the second female lead.

Nokdu - I enjoyed the first 2 episodes a lot. It is quite a bit fun but feels like there is some gravitas which is a nice balance. Plus the actors are easy to watch.
My country - I watched about 40 minutes and I found it to be a difficult watch. Breezy saqueks are one thing but serious and very cruel sagueks are just not my cup of tea. This one has a lot of veteran actors and premise tells me there will be lot of fighting, and plotting and struggling etc. Does not fit my mood.
Pegasus - I continue to love it. There are always moments in the drama that you can laugh out loud. I love the concept of doing everything to lose but winning anyways. The characters are so toonish. I love all of them.
Vagabond - dropped. I was rolling my eyes far too much and getting more and more annoyed with acting choices. Don't want to hate watch a drama...
Extraordinary you - Loving the drama so far.
Flower Crew - dropped.

Vagabond - I really like this. It's fast paced and even the political plotting is easy to follow and not too complicated to understand. I love that the main villains are all females, Jessica and Lily are so badass, I kinda wanna root for them because they make single minded ruthlessness look sexy. 😆
Master In The House - Decided to watch this a few weeks ago after all my current dramas ended and in the interim before Vagabond started. It's really one of the few variety shows that's managed to make me genuinely split my sides laughing. I'm up to episode 58 at the moment and my fav episode was the one with the Olympic gold medalist speed skater in episode 5 but all the episodes are good!

Just finished watching MY AHJUSSI and I really liked it. I don’t necessarily believe in it but I remember chancing upon and reading about this “twin flames“ theory a while back, and all I could think about after finishing this drama was simply that Dong Hoon and Ji-an seemed to be the manifestation or embodiment of that theory. That it may not always be romantic love, or that it may even transcend any form of conventions of romantic love, but some people in life may just be destined to be mirrors of each other’s soul, and will always have that connection to each other as they both make each other realize what they both needed to salvage their souls, and then work on themselves to attain that higher enlightenment. It just really felt like this drama was the embodiment of that, and I especially like how well it was written, not overtly in-your-face but just creating the undertones for the viewers to ruminate and draw their own meanings from the drama.
VAGABOND - Have decided to just throw all logical critique of this drama out of the window and just mindlessly watch for the action and fun. And SSR is just strangely captivating for me haha.
WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS - For all my critique of the poor writing (don’t think it’s any fault of the actors’ portrayal of their characters), I’m just staying on board to find out about the murder mystery. And oh, Kang Ha-neul. I think he’s nailing it for Yong Shik’s character. But alas I’m also not one of those who love GHJ’s characters all the time (though yes I think this is because of poor writing in this instance, pity).
MELTING ME SOFTLY - Premiere was not as good as I thought, but I would say I’m still excited to see how the plot goes now that both leads have woken up 20 years later.
Also finished both parts of ALONG WITH THE GODS and I liked the movies!

I’m coming to the end of KING’S DAUGHTER SOO BAEK HYANG. The final episodes are fast-paced and we finally unravel the web of lies around the Baekje royal family.
I watched two movies this week: WAR OF THE ARROWS and MUSA THE WARRIOR. Enjoyed both immensely and saw enough bloodshed to last me for a while.
I’m excited to watch MY COUNTRY. 😊

Love Affair In The Afternoon: When it first came out, I had a feeling I would like it based on the taboo topic - I love seeing these topics explored despite the outrage around glorifying cheating. Just because you don't talk about it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Dramas for me is about telling different stories and exploring life through various lenses. Cheaters (as despicable as some can be) are human too.
That's why I'm glad I started this drama. I think it's definitely given me a different perspective on love, marriage and cheating. The actors are all bringing their A game and I really am enjoying the drama and am so invested in their lives.
Mom's Diary: Recently started this and I love Heechul's addition. Him watching chinese dramas is so damn relatable. I laughed so hard at him trying to convince his friend to watch watch the drama, movie and him referring to the actresses as his loves is all of us.
Labor For Hire: I wasn't sure whether I would like this show because it was slow at times, but I love Yoo Jae Suk and his work ethic. And there is something therapeutic about nature and working. It made me want to do some manual labor in a nice, scenic area too. I love that the show is low-key and the premise is just simple living.
I Live Alone: I saw Namgoong Min's ep and his place is beautiful and he is also so quite unique. Really interesting to see different sides of actors and get a glimpse into their personal lives. I only watch snippets though and am not so invested in the Rainbow Club yet so I kind of skip a lot of their scenes tbh. I've been told they're great too but time time time.

Watching Joker in saturday, and seeing this movie makes me so happy. Joaquin Phoenix is awsome and I enjoy every minute of it. The little detail, the haunting score, the subtlety of phoenix acting which is the core

EXTRAORDINARY YOU: What a fun little show!! I pretty much fell in love with Dan Oh at first sight, and I'm eating up all her reactions to the "main couple" haha. I would have liked to be able to see Ha Roo's face a bit earlier (out of the damn way, sun!!!), but the journey to get there was so hillarious that I honestly can't complain. On another note, as someone has already pointed out, I hope this show doesn't become what it is making fun of... unironically.
TALE OF NOKDU: Another sweet show. I looove the main actors so there was no way I wouldn't check this out, and I'm glad I did. It has a lot of heart and the dynamics are witty and fun. Also, palace politics? What palace politics? I must have tuned it out because I can't remember anything other than the cute leads, lol.
MELTING ME SOFTLY: I gotta say, I've been in a all-over-the-place-type-drama mood recently, so it's no surprise I enjoyed this. It's so extreme I couldn't help but burst out laughing, like I'm watching it with a friend just to make fun of it. Not a fan of the romance between MDC and his 90's girlfriend, though. And also, would it kill you to give us more scenes with both of the main leads together, show???

I agree with you @mary! Be Melodramatic's ending didn't leave me with withdrawals like AOY but I was completely satisfied with how the series ended^^

Be Melodramatic: finally watched the season finale, and I can say it was a nice one! I liked overall the fact thar it was different was anythg I have seen in kdrama land. It focus was on the writer and I appreciated being able to see how dramas are made, and the process abt writing a show. It was hilarious, fun and serious at the same time. I'm really glad I watched it, and as someone in their thirties, i want to pat myself on the back and say " it gets even better as you approach your forties". Lol.
Rookie historian: that was one nice fusion sageuks! Confidently put it among my top fave sageuks. The heroine strong character stood out for me throughout. And it was just a nice balance of everythg: romance, politics, and even current issues in the world. It was nicely done.
When Camelia blooms: binge watched through episode 4. It'a slow-burn kinda drama. I wish things would move faster, but then I recall that GHJ is usually this shy and seemingly "weak" at the beginning (master's sun, jealousy incarnate) and what i appreciate is seeing her gain bck her strength and confidence, so am here for that.
Melting me softly: i was so excited abt this, Ji Chang Wook return, and I also like Won Jin Ah in between lovers, but for some reason i still have not finished watching ep 1. Am stuck, and i feel like something is either missing or... to much. Idk. Will manage to watch at least ep 1 and 2 before deciding whether to watch it or drop it.
