It wouldn’t be December without awards shows and MBC was the first of the Big 3 networks to hold their awards ceremony. The MBC Drama Awards took place in Seoul on December 30 with comedian Kim Yong-man and idol actress Seohyun (of Girls’ Generation) as the co-hosts. Traditionally, each of the three major Korean networks host their own awards ceremony to celebrate and award their most popular shows. Typically, the networks like to spread the love and award as many shows as possible so there are always lots of categories each year.
Kang Ki-young, So Ji-sub
The biggest prize of the night, the Daesang, went to So Ji-sub for his work in My Secret Terrius. It’s been 23 years since he debuted yet this is his first-ever Daesang. After he accepted his award, he and fellow cast member Kang Ki-young re-created their nose nuzzle moment from the show. Without further ado, the night’s winners!

It's popularity award I know, but at least I found Daesang for previous years were still well-deserved. Enjoyed So Ji Sub as Terius but there's no way his performance could earn Daesang in my opinion.The supporting characters stole this show from this, Drama of The Year award was already sufficient.

Were there not enough nose nuzzles to go around for So Ji Sub to have also given some to Joon-Joon as well???

I know to potray this kind of character is not daesang worthy. I know there is someone who deserves more, but I don't care. Haha.. It's like when Song Joong Ki receives daesang in 2016, meanwhile he deserves it in his performances for The Innocent Man and werewolf Boy. But better late than never. Congratulation, So Ji Sub, So Ji Sub fans, and my self included lol.

That first screenshot of most of the beloved cast of My Secret Terrius just wamed my heart! 😄 I'm still grinning at the sight of those kids and that nose kiss. I remember with a squirm what a surprise it was when San Ryul asked for that nose kiss in the show ... it seemed so forced. But here at the awards show, it's absolutely right ... would have been incomplete without it!!! 😆 What a great start to my DB New Year!! 😍

I know it didnt receive much love in Korea, but I just want to point out that I Am Not A Robot was also an MBC drama that aired in 2018.
Chae Soo Bin wins the MBC Daesang in my heart for portraying essentially 3 roles in one show (Jia, Jia-as-robot and Aji3) and giving each of them their own life.
And all of the excellence awards go to the writer, director, the rest of the cast and especially Yoo Seung Ho for his amazing Kim Minkyu.
Not that I can say the actual winners dont deserve it since I havent watched any of the above shows. But. I just wanted to point it out.

Some of the wins are a little surprising/not what I'd have picked, but at least Children of Nobody got some recognition! Definitely one of the best this year.

She is coming back with new MBC drama in March, with Kim Sang Joong! I forgot what is this about, but a remake of Japanese show if I'm not mistaken. I never expected to see her being active again, so this is a very good news.

I’m happy for So Ji-sub. Though objectively his role this year is not daesang quality, I can’t think of anyone better to receive it. Unfortunately that has been MBC’s problem for the last 3 years.
Oh Ji-young for best writer! Wow. I thought she was good (for a debut drama like Shopping King Louis) but didn’t expect her to get an award so soon. Congratulations! (*whispers* write SIG another rom com😉)

Those of us who watched PRISON PLAYBOOK, COME AND HUG ME, and FOX BRIDE STAR know what a great 2018 actor Kim Kyung-nam had. In PP I will remember him as Jung Kyung-ho's sweet younger brother. In CAHM I will remember him as Jang Ki-yong's violent and tortured older brother. In FBS I will remember him as earnest Security Officer Oh Dae-ki who along with actress Lee Soo-kyung made up one of 2018's best kdrama couples.

This is quite disappointing. The quality at dramabeans is dropping a whole lot. I used to love reading the awards with java beans/girlfriday acting like fashion critics. They don’t even drop weekly reviews anymore. The new beanies are fine but it’s them whose writing brought me to dramaworld and I can’t help but think that even if the website has gotten prettier, the quality here at dramabeans has dropped a whole lot. I miss the old days, less reviewers but far more passion and energy.

MBC must not have had a good year if So Ji-sub won the Daesang. I enjoyed My Secret Terrius and do really like So Ji-Sub but really didn't feel it should have won that many awards. And if The Great Seducer won awards then they really were hurting for good dramas this year.
Also, why is there no Actress of the Year? Unless an Actress could also win that award?

I know anyone can win a Daesang, but they also have a category just called Actor of the Year that Heo Jun-ho won. That's what the question was in reference to.
