Sooyoung, Choi Tae-joon to fall in love for So I Married an Anti-fan

Sooyoung, Choi Tae-joon

Singer-actress Sooyoung (Man Who Sets the Table) is lining up her next project, and it looks like it’ll be a project called So I Married an Anti-Fan. If the title sounds familiar, it’s because it’s also the name of a Chinese movie from 2016 starring Exo’s Chanyeol, Yuan Shanshan, and Sooyoung’s own Girls Generation groupmate Seohyun. Both the Chinese movie and this new K-drama series are based on the best-selling manhwa and novel of the same name.

The plot of the 16-episode series centers around a reporter who goes out to interview a Hallyu star, runs into conflict with him, and ends up getting fired from her job. She blames him for her losing her job and becomes his anti-fan, and somehow ends up living in the same house as him… and romance ensues. (Only in K-drama! Gotta love it.)

Sooyoung is up to play magazine features reporter Lee Geun-young, while Choi Tae-joon (Suspicious Partner) has been tapped to play Hallyu star Hoo-joon. (There were briefly some murmurings a few months ago that Jaejoong was in contention to star in the drama, but he denied those rumors right away.) Geun-young’s job at the magazine encompasses all manner of menial and miscellaneous tasks, and her team plans feature stories “like pitchers on a baseball team” — so, throwing out random ideas and hoping they work. Geun-young believes in her talent and has a strong sense of justice that has gotten her caught up in other people’s problems with some regularity. Hoo-joon, on the other hand, is six years into his career and at the pinnacle of success in the K-pop industry.

So I Married an Anti-fan will be directed by PD Kang Chul-woo of 1% of Anything (which I loved) and My Secret Romance (which made my insides shrivel up in embarrassment, although I did still watch it all); it will be written by SNL Korea writer Nam Ji-yeon. It does not yet have a broadcaster or an airdate.

This news is what I really needed on a Monday morning.😍
While watching the movie which I liked I was thinking this will be a great drama plot.
Choi Tae Joon has shown his acting ability and he can play this role damn well and I like Soo Young's acting. She's one of my favorite idol actor who can act well.
I like the PD too. I enjoyed 1% of something. My secret romance was not perfect but good for the Mon-Tues line up rom-com. :)
I hope TVN picks it up. *Prays in earnest*

This drama sounds like a K-pop fangirl's fantasy come true. Slip into the shoes of the female lead & date your bias vicariously. 😅 Or perhaps I'm the only one who thought of this - since I'm a K-pop fangirl?

Love this! I like sooyoung. This sounds a tiny bit like one more happy ending, reporter but with a has-been kpop idol. Sooyoung can get tips from JKH how to act as a reporter hahahaha

Choi Tae-joon finally will be the lead, thank God. A long overdue. I was thinking about Jo Boah as his leading lady when I read about his casting news before (they were cute and adorable pairing in the weekend drama they did). But Soo Young is not a bad choice either. I really loved her in My Spring Days but sadly that's the last time time I think she got a project that fully utilised her potential.

glad to see you back Sunbae ^^ , it's finally time Choi Tae-joon play the male lead indeed ^^ . I don't know SooYoung that much, so I'll trust your words about her not being a bad choice .
The story seems fun and I'm curious about the drama written by a SNL Korea writer ^^ , hoping it'll be a good drama just like former 1n2d writer came up with the Reply series and Prison playbook (even though I only watched reply 97)

Ahaha. I'm still lurking here. 😉Hmm, Sooyoung is like Uee for me, perform better in more matured roles / projects, probably better in melodrama than romcom. I have watched the movie version, but I'm not so sure about Sooyoung in the female lead role though. I think she might decline it, not sure. As for Choi Tae Joon, I can watch him in anything. It's funny how he is going to play the same role that his bestfriend Chanyeol once played. LOL.

Agree about Sooyoung is better in mature roles, I also think she suits more with mature man but it depends on the genre.

Oh didn't know that CTJ is friend with Chanyeol! XD

I didn't know they were friends , so should we expect a cameo ? haha
I checked SooYoung previous work and she was in Police unit 38 , I enjoyed that drama and her acting was ok.

@kudoran, Chanyeol as cameo would be interesting!

Yes, Sooyoung was okay in PU38, but I liked her better in Cyrano Agency and My Spring Days. 😁

4

You know how I wish to see Sooyoung and Jung Kyung ho acting together, but since they are couple in real life, it is almost impossible especially in kdrama land. I think they will be a great pair on screen too. Yes they are best friends. I think CTJ came to EXO concert too.

@kudoran LOl his cameo will be kinda funny 😆 Chan yeol also will be playing as Park Shin Hye's brother in their drama lol. Their circle sure is interesting.

I agree with regards to Uee perform better in matured roles. Her best performance was in marriage contract. Great drama! Uee was phenomenal. I liked SY in perfect sense and my spring days. Ahaha

I've only saw choi tae joon in missing 9. He was so creepy in that hahah

The Chinese movie was horrible. Predictable and silly.
The PD directed the abomination which is "My Secret Romance"
The actor is not yet experienced/good enough for a leading role.

Hmm... I think I might pass that one.

The Chinese movie being silly doesn't mean the K-drama is going to be the same. I find that Chinese production in general tends to be more dramatic and crazy.
And I think Choi Tae Joon has plenty of acting experience, but that's my opinion.

He's an amazing, amazing actor, so evil in Missing, so charming in Suspicious Partner. I am so excited, I think I'm going to take on - if they'll have me, that is - as, wait for it, my biggest role yet, THE HOUSE!!!!!

He was really good in Missing Nine. I still remember the scene after his first kill when he sighed and said: "Surviving is hard."

It's sad Missing Nine was such a mess at the end. The drama had potential and good actors.

I turned down the role of the tram in Mr. Sunshine, because I have motion sickness, and, to be honest, am regretting it now. I know I'm going to have an easy time playing house, I mean, all I have to do is look homely, right?

Er, I think the word you want is "homey." You look nice, not homely. ;-)

Nah, I don't want to look nice. I'm playing multiple roles which call for a wide range...edgy doormat, blank wall, flushed toilet bowl, wooden post. Can't. Wait.
Lol-ing at one-track mind.

YEAH. Sooyoung is my favourite actress (beside Seo Ji-hye) and Choi Tae-jooo also belongs to my favourites, especially after his last drama, The Undateables. She was paired off with older actors or was casted in family dramas. Finally it is a 16-episode drama with an actor similar to her age.

I don't really like Sooyoung as an actress, it was pretty funny how they made her disapear in the story of Police Unit 38, all the other actresses were far better than her.

It sounds as a typical cute-romantic-cliché k-drama and it can be very fluffy or very ridiculous. It depends a lot of the chemistry of the actors. So I think I will pass this one.

Oho. I think SY is not bad of an actress. Maybe you can try watching her other dramas ☺? I think she was great in perfect sense. Its a kbs special drama/movie and it was a very touching story. She was also good in my spring days.

I think i watched police unit 38 too, but i cant really recall the story anymore hahaha

The title seems familiar. Is this one if the drama offered to Jin Se Yeon some time ago. If do guess she did not consider taking it. It would be nice though to team up with one of her former co-star from Flower in Prison

Affirmative. The male costar (JaeJoong) in the article said he had never heard of it so she never really followed up on it...probably turned it down coz it had no broadcast date or station will to take it up.

Oh, a pairing that I never imagined but I like both of them! I've watched the c-movie and I think Sooyoung is a good choice because FL character is a spunky and shameless reporter, which reminded me of Sooyoung in Cyrano Agency and she is spunky and savage in RL too, heeee~😁

Still wonder how they gonna stretch the plot to 16 eps, there's not too much material. Hopefully there's no repeated same cringey scenes over and over again. *flashback to My Secret Romance

Haha, true! I really hope they will bring in more plot! If it was a manhwa, there should be more plot, maybe they left it out in the movie?

I loved Cyrano Agency! It was also my only drama with Sooyoung and she won me over with that.

Ah, that's true! I don't read the manhwa so idk the details but yeah probably there's more plot in it than the movie.

Yes, she's great in Cyrano Agency😊

A good manwha can easily yield 16 episodes- For example the wonderful 2004 drama FULL HOUSE was based upon a manhwa. If you haven't seen FULL HOUSE my only question to you would be 'What are you waiting for?'. There should be more than enough material without having to stretch the plot.

I always have these kinds of coincidences, lmao. BUT I'm glad. This is a fresh pairing and the premise seems hilarious too.

Woah I'm so happy with this news!
So I married the anti-fan is one of the few Korean novel I've read and it's my fav! I remember the news about it being adapted to drama has been lurking for a few years, even before the (disastrous) c-movie. From what I suspect, they were initially want to make it into drama, but perhaps the plan fell through so it is made into a c-movie. Well honestly I want to forget they ever made that movie, so I was really glad with this news.
I remember playing the fan-casting with my friend who also like the novel. We both at first choose Park Si-hoo (back before he become the man we know now) as Heo Joon. And for Geun Yeong I choose Moon Geun Yeong (I just finish watched Cheongdamdong Alice at that time) because I just like seeing them together.
Soo young and Choi Tae Joon wouldn't be my first choice tho, but I still like both of them. I just watch Soo young in Cyrano agency, she is not very good in there I guess, but it's been a few years so there must be some improvement. While CTJ quite a mediocre in my list, because he hasn't played anything that really caught my interest, but I still like him just fine. I'm quite worried with him playing this character tho, because the Heo Joon I know from the novel is quite a layered character. That's why my first choice back then was PSH, because after watching him in Princess Man and Cheongdamdong, I think he is capable to played the role as Heo Joon. Geun Yeong mostly a character who seems drawn out at first, being pitied and quite an annoyance, but through the story will become mature.
I'm very familiar with the source material in novel, and from my opinion it has potential to be more as long as it done right. If you want to watch this, I suggest you to not compare it with the movie because everything in there are just trash. I'm quite worried with this writer-pd team tho (Idk know any of the writer's work) but I'm so going to watch this in the hope its not going to be another disaster on my favorite watch. Or else, I'm going to be their number one anti-fan

As I suspected when I watched the movie- you cannot compress this story into a space of less than 2 hours. You may be right about how it became a movie instead of a C-drama. Chinese movies can be very good- 2011's A Beautiful Life is one example. A second is the 2013 movie The Nightingale, which is so wonderful that we bought our own DVD copy. There was no lack of talent in the C-movie version of So I Married My Anti-fan- but it seemed to be disjointed in places-: If it had been intended as a drama but then was "condensed" into a movie that would explain the choppiness.
