Remake of Japanese drama Rich Man, Poor Woman heads to MBN, Dramax

EXO’s Suho (Star of the Universe) and Ha Yeon-soo (Legendary Witches) have been cast to headline a new romance drama called Rich Man, a Korean remake of the J-drama Rich Man, Poor Woman. Is that really the title? How… literal. The series has been picked up for simultaneous broadcast on cable network MBN and streaming platform Dramax, and premieres in May.

The original Japanese drama aired on Fuji TV in 2012, and as you might have guessed, it’s a love story between a filthy rich man and a poor woman. Suho has been cast to play the young geeeeenius programmer and CEO of the massively successful tech company Next One. He sounds like the standard prickly, handsome, wealthy drama hero, except that he has prosopagnosia, or face blindness, which prevents him from recognizing the face of the woman he loves.

Ha Yeon-soo will play an endlessly optimistic young woman who is unemployed and has “a memory like AlphaGo.” She applies for a job at the hero’s company, which is how they’ll meet. Also joining the cast is Oh Chang-seok (Defendant) as Next One’s co-founder and vice president with a mysterious side, and Kim Ye-won (Revolutionary Love) as Oh Chang-seok’s younger sister and gallery curator.

I haven’t seen the original, but it sounds like a light workplace romance akin to I’m Not a Robot without the robots. The casting stories are promising a bickering romance, so there’s definitely potential for some rom-com hijinks in there. Rich Man will be penned by writer Hwang Jo-yoon of Twelve Men in a Year and the movies Rampant, Memoir of a Murderer, Masquerade, and Old Boy, and directed by PD Min Doo-shik of web dramas My Only Love Song and Click Your Heart.

It’ll air on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 9.

Same! I kept thinking how a korean version would deal with some situations differently (and give us more skinship for sure) I have no idea who Suho is or what he's been in, but most people's wariness about him makes me wary!
I just hope it's enjoyable...I didn't particularly love RM/PW, but it kept me entertained when it aired

To better summarize this drama, the guy has prosopagnosia aka face blindness. Then the girl came along, an elite univesity graduate who hasn't landed her first regular job, who has the same name as the guy's mother. That bit got him interested since his mother left hin and bc of his face blindness, its hard for him to search for his mother. Well, as it happens, the girl knows his mother and that's the reason why she used a fake name as a bait when she applied for the job.

I love Rich Man, Poor Woman cause Orugi Shun and Ishihara Satomi were great together in it! But Suho... D: Even I think to play Ishihara's role, a lot of spunk is required.

This jdramaa has it flaws. But it is such a crack drama with an exploding chemistry between the leads.

I dont know whether Suho has the charisma of Oguri Shun to bring Hyuga Toru alive or not. I will probably just check the feedback from people that is watching it first

Yay! I'm a big EXO fan and I especially like Suho. He hasn't disappointed me in either singing or acting. I loved his movie: One Way Trip and the Star of the universe drama (although it was to short and toooo sad). Anyway, I might be heavily biased but I am genuinely looking forward to this show.
P.S. I haven't seen the Jap version unlike the other commenters so I can't really judge!

Same! I'm really looking forward to this and I haven't seen the Japanese version either so I'm going to treat it as a whole new drama. I have a lot of faith in Suho's acting. And Ha Yeon-seo is a pretty good acyress. Here's to hoping the show is good and they have chemistry in abundance. I'm going to be selfish and hope the show doesn't get recapped.

Wait, suho was in one way trip? I’m shook cause I don’t remember him. Just googled it and his name actually came up first. I guess that’s a good thing...? I only watched the movie for Ryu Jun Yeol but seeing as I didn’t realize it was Suho, it means he actually did his job and wasn’t shitty which is great. I mean, I can’t be blamed as most idol turned actor are usually very bad or very, very average actors so I wasn’t looking forward to this but now I am.

Umm, I'm sorry but Suho was the friend who got into a coma while the three others had their mishaps and adventures. He had had his parts with his grandmother etc, but it wasnt very long. I love Suho (EXO-L here and my bias is Suho) but it was a moderately easy character, and we can hardly judge much from it.

I actually think he's mediocre in acting, to be honest.

I like Ha Yeon-soo, glad that she is getting a lead role. Suho is pretty but not sure about his acting. But this drama doesn't seem to require you to have the best acting imo, enough to have the serviceable acting. The writers and PD are quite experienced ones, My Only Love Song managed to make me love Lee Jonghyun, so maybe this drama will also make me like Suho as an actor. I'm picky when it comes to acting, but there are times I'm more forgiving especially for light romcom genre. To be honest I rather seeing idols in this kind of drama rather than watching them in bigger & heavier drama especially when they don't have enough acting skill.

Oh no. I don't think Suho is the best choice for Toru Hyuga character. I watched him in The Star of The Universe and while I liked the story and the heroine, I think he's a bit stiff and still pretty limited in projecting the right emotion.

And I admit that Toru Hyuga was such an asshole in RMPW but Oguri Shun played the character so well that I couldn't help but to root for him. He's a jerk but also complicated, childish, playful but value friendship the most, and I know that these are all the basic description of a hero in any drama XD but yeah it's because Oguri Shun make it work flawlessly.

And Ishihara Satomi is love <3

The only reason I actually bothered to watch this drama was because of cast. I wonder if they actually watched the show before making a casting for remake, they could cast Ji Sung and Soo Ae or someone at this level, why cast people who seem to be fresh out of college and one of them definitely doesn't has enough acting experience? I'll probably skip it.

I'm not saying your wrong here, and everyone knows that Ji sung and Soo ae have the chops for it but doing this kind of drama would sort of be a letdown of their skills. In fact, all the really good actors and actresses aren't really doing romcoms these days and if you've watched the recent ones, with the exception of yoo seungho, they're all newer actors. Even if the role went to someone else, it will probably be someone newer and not Ji sung XD

Got to be honest, neve heard of MBN or Dramax before XD And facial blindness?? Oooh, this is only the second time I've seen a character with it, which is such a pity because it makes for really good angst. And it's so common but not a lot of people know about it (it's sorta like dimples, they're so common but yet almost no one knows that it's technically considered a deformity.) No one's quite sure how many people have it because why would people suddenly ask if you can recognise them from their face?? That's just weird and so there's a lot of people leading normal lives with wives and children that don't know that being able to recognise faces are normal. I find that sometimes it's better not to know because you can't see what you don't know. But hey, that's my opinion.

Yeah, I agree. Tbh I don't know how well Suho can act, and I think they could have gotten someone who can act better, but all the experienced actors on Oguri Shun's level are staying away from romcoms with only a few select actors who are doing romcoms who do have the talent but eh, the plot doesn't even seem all that interesting so I don't know if they'll even look at it. I've heard the jdrama is good so maybe it will change my mind.

ah, why. It is not about the story you pick in Japanese dramas, it is the vibe and the different kind of tension they have. You cannot replicate that. I have yet to see a korean remake that hits a bullseye with the FEEL. Japanese dramas feel at the same time more natural and more unnatural, but somehow convincing.

omgosh, I agree with your comment about the "FEEl" from japanese drama. Like j-dramas are made on smaller budget and sometimes with very strange stories, but somehow the FEELs you get from them is just so precious. Everyone let's be honest with ourselves. If you look at the trend, the experienced actors they're all staying away from romcoms. In fact right now most romcom leads are the newer actors, those transitioning to lead roles and yes, idol actors. If this wasn't an adaption of a jdrama I doubt most of you would be here complaining. And how more better do you think the drama could have done in terms of casting?? There's only so much better they can do then with Suho.

" If this wasn't an adaption of a jdrama I doubt most of you would be here complaining. "

Precisely the point. Korean dramas have very patchy records with remaking jdramas (still fuming mad with tomorrow cantabile to this day), with just very few exceptions of mostly non rom coms like White Tower and Mother.

And 'Trend'? What 'trend'? Lee Min-Ki had just done a rom-com in 'Because This Is My First Life', although I did feel Nam Se-Hee was a composite of RMPW's Hyuga Toru and NigeHaji's Hiramasa. Lee Seung-Gi did Hwayugi, which is largely a rom-com. Granted, they are more experienced actors who have just been released from their obligatory military duty....

They could have done sooo much better in casting with the other actors than EXO's Suho. But, since I don't care about this "remake", I'm glad those better actors have better things to do...

I remember when Boys Over Flowers was airing, everyone was crazy like truly mad (lol) with Lee Min Ho & Kim Hyun Joong. The drama made them hallyu star over night. And now, Lee Min Ho is A-class star. But, before that? I was skeptical as well, who are these people dare to play Oguri Shun, Jun Matsumo/ Taiwanese's F4. Look at them now. lol.

Story-wise, this drama had nothing new so the main thing that made the original a success was because of the great chemistry between the two leads. And the way Oguri Shun and Ishihara Satomi portrayed their characters, so I don't think K-version will be able to do well. I mean I know nothing about suho so I can comment on that and Ha yeon soo is a good actress but Isihara satomi is like on a different level so...

But hey I could be wrong. I guess we'll only know once the show actually comes out.

It was quite popular as it got a movie special sequel. oguri shun was just amazing in the role. j-dramas has a level of cringe that k-dramas left behind ages ago so interested to see how this will look. the face blindness he is suffering from prevents him to recognise nearly anyone except a few close friends. Wonder if the storyline will be the same.

I am both excited and dreading this remake. I've seen the original series and I love it not only for the cast but for the story too.

I think Ha Yeon Soo would be able to portray Ishihara Satomi's character there wonderfully (the character really isn't that complicated) but Suho for Shun-sama's character? uhhhhmm.. I really think no. Most of the "complicated" emotion in this series was handled mostly by the men. (complicated bromance, company issues etc)

With this news, I guess it's time to rewatch the original JP series

What happened to Ha Yeon-Soo's career? After Monstar and Potato Star it seemed she was somewhat on the rise with that well-received weekender she did, but if I'm not wrong, it's been nothing much on the acting front since. And when she finally resurfaces, it's in this second-rate small drama project that I don't think will do much for her. She'll probably do reasonably well, not that I would ever watch this.

I don't know about Su Ho because One Way Trip is the only project I saw him in (does being terrible for a 10-minute-cameo in Prime Minister & I count?), but that movie was pretty much The Ji Soo Show so I don't remember much else. But I wasn't particularly insulted by any of the acting there so good luck I guess?

I can't remember much from Rich Man Poor Women, not because it was not memorable but because of my awful memory. I just know I really liked it. Oguri Shun is amazing in anything and Ishihara is adorable. And this seems like something Ha Yeon Seo would do well in. Not that this has anything to do with the drama, but I've always thought Ha Yeon Soo looks more Japanese than Korean from when I first saw her in Monstar. This looks exciting. When the first time I watched this drama on TV, I'm not interested enough. Then it being rerun and I watched it around eps 6 and I found it not really bad. Found it later that this is the remake of j-drama, so I gave it a shout and I enjoy it a lot.

Surprisingly this drama is not really a rom-com and that makes me hooked! The title is so plain and makes people underrated the drama but believe me, the title is so misleading IMO.

Until the last episode I'm still surprised that I like the drama, for story side. While for the actress and actors in here, I can't say more :D
If they cast for a better artist maybe it could be different. In some way, I feel the trace of j-drama in there and I love it! (I still can't forget how they ruin Proposal Daisakusen)
