Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

girlfriday

Currently recapping: Hwayugi

Jugglers: I wasn’t as invested by the end, mostly because the last arc involved taking down baddies who were cartoonishly simple and not worth all that screen time. But it ended the way we all hoped, with plenty of rah-rah team moments and cuteness from the couple, so I don’t have any big complaints. Overall it was very even, consistently light and fluffy all the way through and pretty episodic, almost like a sitcom, which made it an easy show to reach for every week.

I’m Not a Robot: It took me a really long time to watch the finale, probably because all of the conflicts I actually cared about had already been wrapped up. I didn’t mind the cutesy filler too much since our couple was happy, but I was waiting for some kind of major robot-centric point at the end, and it never came. That was a tad disappointing, but my main takeaway from this drama is that Chae Soo-bin and Yoo Seung-ho are endlessly likable, and I would watch them in anything.

Mother: Damn, this is good. The directing is amazing, as expected, and the story is difficult to watch but riveting at the same time—I had to brace myself before pressing play but then I couldn’t look away once it started. I’ve only seen the first episode, which was a slow burn of eerie tension, as we learn piece by piece how badly this little girl is being treated at home. But by the end of the hour I was desperate for Lee Bo-young to take her away, so mission accomplished.

Radio Romance: Yoon Doo-joon and Kim So-hyun are very cute together onscreen; I just find it hard to believe whenever she’s running around mixing drinks at parties, because that image is jarring to me. But when she was being berated for TRYING to become a main writer, you’d better believe I was on her side and cheering for Yoon Doo-joon to do something about it. I don’t like how cold he is, but then they went and put him in a hanbok for his drama-within-the-drama shoot, and I instantly forgave him for everything. Apparently I’m easy like that.

TeriYaki

Black Knight: I was drawn to this drama by the visuals of Kim Rae-won (he’s never looked better) and was hooked by his abiding love for Shin Se-kyung. This man knows his heart and I appreciate that the show hasn’t seriously threatened the bond between their characters. Now that Kim Rae-won knows the truth about his past life and the part that Seo Ji-hye played in it, his rejection of her has completely pushed her over the edge. Sharon takes the adage, “If I can’t have him, no one can,” to a whole new level. I’m looking forward to an epic confrontation before Su-ho and Hae-ra get their happily ever after.

Just Between Lovers: This has been a haunting drama to watch and I had to pause for a few weeks because it was too difficult to get through. I caught up to Episode 13 this week and was impressed once again by the naturalness of the relationship between Won Jin-ah and Junho. Joo-won’s disappointment over their romantic connection only underscores their made-for-each other bond. The sweet moments between Kang-doo and Moon-soo are what keep me going because these two lovebirds aren’t home free yet. As this drama illustrates all too well, just because they deserve some happiness, it doesn’t mean that Kang-doo and Moon-soo will get it.

Just Between Lovers - It's been a long time since fictional characters have affected me as much as Gang Doo and Moon Soo. Went right to the top of my favorite k-dramas ever.

Return - Lee Jin Wook's acting is distracting. He was in Nine, right? I liked that drama and don't remember him being that bad, but it was a long time ago. The drama's keeping me engaged, however, I can see why it's doing well in the ratings.

Misty - I watched Episode 1 and think I'm hooked. Kim Nam-joo is fabulous as is her wardrode.

Radio Romance - It's probably not a good sign when my biggest takeaway from the first week was that I dislike all of the hairstyles and hair colors.

On the other hand, I find Return a really bad show. So many famous actors who have awful lines. There's no chemistry or emoting from anyone. Except Lee Jin Wook, who is out acting everyone with his usual sarcastic wit.

Kim Nam-Joo's wardrobe is very chic, something rare in K-Dramaland :-) Misty seems promising after the first 2 episodes.

FINISHED

Just Between Lovers
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this drama had a baffling way of covering heavy topics while at this same time being an easy and enjoyable watch. I can't remember a time when I had to take a break from this drama either between or during episodes. The acting was solid, the presentation and production quality were consistent, the writing was mostly clever and provided many a teachable moment and the topics/themes were varied. I feel like I should list some of them:
+ The effects of disasters--in this case it's the collapse of a shopping mall.
+ The significance of memorials.
+ Living with disability, mental illness (PTSD, depression etc.), guilt, and loss.
+ Access to healthcare for people who are financially well off and not, and immigrants.

It was by no means a perfect drama though. I wished they had dealt with Gang-doo's mental health in a more meaningful way. They could have done that instead of doing that other thing they opted for at the end. The handholding was infinitely more romantic than the kiss scenes.

I would give this drama an A-.

ONGOING

Hwayugi
Still loving this drama. Still loving Lee Seung-gi.

Spring Has Come
I'm still watching this. I really don't know what to think of Kai sometimes. I can't quite decide if he's that good or that bad. The themes covered are varied and interesting to me. I guess that's why I'm still watching. That and it comes of as very different.

PICKED UP

Radio Romance
I liked the first episode a lot and the second wasn't too bad. Really too early to say much about this other than I hope it turns out well.

can we say the fact that mother jap version and turkish version have been huge in those countries .. while no one is watching the korean version even though its absolutely stunning shows how different the tv culture in korea and those who are watching korean dramas ... when you say its a tough show to watch , why it was not tough in turkey or japan ... personally I dont find it even that heavy just sad ... but its not what you call entertainment just a subtle show about women

I also don't watch Mother for entertainment, I feel I am attracted to it because I feel familiar with children abuse and since she is fighting so much to save the child, I feel a dregree of envy for hye na, that she found a new mother who really loves her. I wish I would have found someone like that when I was little. I always had the dream someone else would adopt me and treat me well.
You guys may think this is extremely sad or masochist from my part, but the envy I feel is not bitter, it is a relief. Even though it is a show, I want to believe there are children being rescued from that type of abuse, and that there are prof Kangs like Lee Boyoung in the world. Maybe one day I will meet one of them.
Lee Bo Young's character brings me back some faith in humanity.
There... I am saying it. I suffered from different types of abuse when I was little and until I was 13 or even more than 13, if I take into account one of the abusers was my own mother, just like in Hye na's case.
I can only sympathise with victims, and I understand the scars left.
Healing can be also a long suffering process. I am still in it.

I am so glad, actually, that they made this drama. I think the title of birth mother is so hailed that it covers the fact that some birth mothers does not play the role of a mother (only wear the title but not doing anything) and are even not fit to become mother, just like in Hye Na's case. She declares herself a "Miss", not a "Mother", and she isnt ready to become a mother, she acts like juvenile. This is actually sad and hurting the child the most.

Finished:
Just Between Lovers: Such a gem. I can't believe SK slept on this show. It was really beautiful. I think it has raised my standards when it comes to melodramas. Absolutely a must-watch. You can do it! (I wish they made recaps on this.)

Started:
Radio Romance: It's just okay for me, honestly. Nothing special, but I'll still watch a few episodes. Otherwise, I'll drop this soon.
Mother: So, so heavy! This is a show that you cannot binge-watch. Watch while it's ongoing. I just want to say that it hurts my heart too much. It deserves higher ratings.
Return: I started on this weeks ago but never really bothered to continue. I'll start again soon... This is a great drama though. Quite heavy & the cast is a powerhouse one! Let's see... But honestly, this show is something you can bingewatch.
Hwayugi: HWAYUGIIIII, my love. Oh wow, Lee Seung Gi is just so dreamy. I'm enjoying this so much. I can't wait for the next episodes aaaah!!!
Money Flower: The weekend is here which means it's the last 2 episodes of Money Flower. I just love how intense this show gets, honestly. I can't wait for the ending!

Agreed RE: not binge watching Mother. I watched the first 3 episodes in a row because I was home sick, and let me tell you, that was a mistake! This show is way too heavy for that. My brain needed time to digest everything.

I still can't get over how good JBL was! Hopefully it will gain more fans as people watch it through "on demand"-type services now that it's over. The finale finally made the ratings hit 2%, which isn't suuuper great, but decent.

Tough week for me.
I rallied Mother but it was actually sooo rewarding at the end of ep 4. Ep 1 was so hard to watch, but it was beautiful, packed full of suspense and background story, and it covers everything that are necessary for us to know, and everything that made us root for the kidnapping. Very clever. It made all the police department and the social service looks powerless, to be honest, in the face of a juvenile, self worth-deprived mother.

Honestly? I think the criminal here is the mother. I know, her bf is an ex convict who continues to torment other seemingly weak people, harrassing them to the point of rape and murder, but WHAT KIND OF MOTHER put her child in a trash bag and put it outside in the cold (and go get coffee and watch cinema? That is just crazy.

She even felt offensed being called Mother, and prefer to be called Miss by people. What the-?

Perhaps she isnt ready being a mom? I dunno. But she could have been making different decisions.

I mourn to the fact that she treated her child like a nuisance, burden, and even plague, to the point that she really did put her up to die inside the trash bag, by leaving her there, in front of the house with the rest of her trash, in the cold night. I still shiver if I remember the scene, until now.

On the bright side, the dark scenes made me celebrate every single people who are kind to the that child. They look like angels, and I am so glad we have more of them here in this movie rather than the baddies. I am soooo looking forward for the bird researcher and that child to discover more about themselves as they go on, to reconnect them with good people in their lives, to heal, and to grow.

As about the bad guy...I wish he died. I honestly do. I mean, even being sent to prison didnt do much for him, right? Psychiatric ward would do better for him, perhaps.

Another one is Hwayugi. I am agonizing now as I try to decide whether I should watch ep 11 or wait until the subtitles of ep 12 is up.

I've been waiting for Mother to premiere since I heard the casting news. I haven't seen the Japanese version but have seen many rave reviews about it. Finally got to watch the first two episodes and was not disappointed. It's such a well-done drama (so far) -- from directing, cinematography, writing, acting. It definitely feels more like a movie in terms of overall feel and quality. I usually prefer romcoms when it comes to dramas and tend avoid shows with heavy topics but I'm gladly making an exception this time. Too bad the ratings decreased a bit this week compared to last week. I do understand though that it's not going to appeal to the public due to its heavy topic and somber feel. But there's something very captivating about Mother despite being hard to watch.

Just wanted to say thanks. Due to the buzz over Smart Prison Living- finished it and think it's one of the best Kdrama I've ever seen. I am the rom com watcher so normally don't venture to the dark side.

Currently on ep 12 of Dark Knight. Which also didn't interest me initially but the wtf video clips on DB made me curious. It is wtf sometimes on the drama. It's one weird show or rather Sharon. I am also not a KRW fan so it's also another one I am watching due to the comments here.

Then keeping Just Between Lovers- when DK finishes. I watched the last 10 minutes of ep 16- sorry. I couldn't wait.

So therefore am following Hwayugi and MGL only and am not even bothered about the pre- emption during the Olympics I have enough to tide me over.

Can I give a shout out to The Man Who Sets The Table? Normal melodrama and makjang weekend drama. But omg. Kim Soo-Mi is an absolute riot. I am thoroughly enjoying her scenes and only watch the whole drama for her. Her BTS are one of the funniest I have ever seen.

I've been wondering about Smart Prison Living. It's now available for me to watch but I'm really mostly interested in Jung Kyung ho and he doesn't seem to have as big a role as advertised. Is this true?

Hi @linda-palapala Smart Prison Living is a wonderful drama. The cast is terrific and I can't recommend it enough. I am also a fan of Jung Kyung-ho and he was the main reason I wanted to watch. I would describe his role in this drama as subdued. I thought he was a joy. You will not be getting Paksa-adeul 2 here. (Although I did pick up a couple of inside references to Heartless City.)
A small thing. In this drama he is the master of giving the look. He doesn't have to say anything but just by looking at his eyes you know what he is thinking.
Yes, the episodes are long but as the story lines developed that was not an issue for me.
Rating: A+

Ooh, thanks! Hope I can also pick up the inside references to Heartless City - I've watched it enough times. And why do I love Korean dramas as opposed to Hollywood? Because Koreans know how to give "the look" - acting with the eyes says it all. Thanks again for your recommendation.

I think you might enjoy this since you are a big Heartless City fan. Here is a picture that JKH posted on his Instagram account Dec 13, 2017 about half way through the run of the drama. I think you will recognize the actor with him from HC who is also in Smart Prison Living (Prison Playbook on Netflix):
I really don't think this warrants a SPOILER ALERT but apologies in advance.

I'm also JKH's fan but ı have to admit that Park Hae Soo stole the show. The prison was rather like a male boarding school, uneventful and optimistic, I enjoyed the acting and the subdued humor very much.

His role is important but I don't think you should go into SPL just solely for him. He has an excellent cast with him and the writer and directors are so good. I have watched a few of his dramas before- this drama showcases his acting talent and shows a viewer what it means to have an ensemble cast. Who can act.

I got to watch the first two episodes of 'Misty' (I still don't know what the title refers to). I've enjoyed K-Drama representations of strong ruthless women over a certain age (the villainesse in K2 comes to mind). Misty was sexier than I had expected, with a 19 age rating while most every other drama seems to be 15 age rating.

I just started a new series "Last Minute lovers" (never heard of it before). A nobody actor can't get a job because he looks *too much* like a 'famous actor'. A star-struck young woman hires him to play that actor and 'date' her. So far, so awkward. Then they started showing clips of this 'famous actor'. Its Gong Yoo! HA HA HA HA! Okay, not the actual actor, he looks nothing like Gong Yoo. But he's reenacting scenes straight from his old TV shows. I nearly died laughing. The series may be great or it may be awful but first episode caught my attention.

after the end of my beloved INAR, i finally turned to Hwayugi. the humor kept me going, some parts were gut-bustingly funny (zombie in the fridge, anyone? XD) . the romance, not so much. i mean, i love the marriage contract troupe, but i just feel zero chemistry between the leads. lee seunggi was rocking it as SOG, seriously. i've never found him that attractive before but there must be some magic sprinkles in the army rations because wow he's hot. still feeling no chemistry with the heroine tho

i'm also keeping up with yamazki kento's new drama, Todome no Kiss. this drama, really. never saw so many kisses and bed scenes and deaths in one episode of a drama before lol. and when they say the lead character's a scum, they weren't kidding lol. kento as Eito is such a manipulative asshole, but as a host/gigolo i can totally see why women pay for his, um services. good acting performance all around. the story's riveting, but the wait for subs is killing me

since hwayugi i'm suddenly in need of a seunggi fix so been watching his new variety "Master in the house" and the exercise fake-outs in episode 4 was. SO. FUNNY. i cannot wait for new episodes to come out

after YEARS, i finally went past episode 2 of King 2 Hearts and ended up marathoning it over the weekend. the pace definitely picked up after the rather boring first episodes and i ended up loving it. great acting by LSG, him being King is believable.and the journey of how he shaped up from being an immature jerk to a real King is just lovely to see

There's a new Japanese drama 'Spring has Come' (4 episodes so far). It's cross-cultural with a Korean male lead. It starts out as a mild and sweet love story, but there's some perverse cross-currents just under the family surface. One in particular is very funny and also very sad at the same time. The female lead is so sweet and lovable that I expect her to be crushed like a bug eventually. Nobody that sweet survives long in dramaland.
