17 signs that you’ve become a K-pop stan (again, against your better judgment)

The last time I was a K-pop fan was in the stone ages of K-pop, when Seo Taiji and H.O.T. were creating pandemonium among teenage girls and cassette tapes were still sold in stores (even though true fans shelled out for the CD, of course). Every time my father ripped the idol posters off my walls, it just fanned the flames of my rebellion even harder, and I was convinced that my fanlove would never die. Never!

But it did, of course, because I grew up and moved out, and was not compelled to take posters of my oppas with me to my college dorm room. Years later, when I returned to dramas after spending a good long chunk of my life away from them, I still never returned to K-pop fandom in the same way. I just didn’t know any of the groups by then, and learning them seemed like a daunting task. My playlists were mostly filled with drama OSTs, and I had probably encountered idols more as variety personas than as singers.

Then a strange thing happened recently. I became a K-pop fan again by accident, for reasons I’m not sure I understand. I was bored out of my mind and out of dramas to watch (the drama slump is real, my friends), and so I did what I always do when I can’t be bothered to start a new drama: watch a random episode of a variety show, because the mental engagement and commitment level are much lower. I started and stopped countless episodes, sat through entire pilots, and was feeling dissatisfied with everything I tried.

It was around that time that I had finished watching School 2017, and remembered that Kim Se-jung had gotten her start on the idol survival program Produce 101, so I idly picked it up and ended up breezing through the entire season. It was like brain candy, so naturally I watched the second season immediately afterward. Boy, was that a mistake.

The second season was all boys, so of course it was eye candy on top of brain candy, and you can see where this is going. I don’t know what happened, or how the show hoodwinked me into unleashing my inner teenage fangirl, but I am now exhibiting the classic, unmistakable signs of standom:

  1. You spend every free moment on Youtube watching music videos, behind-the-scenes videos, and fan-made videos about the videos. You marvel at the sheer volume of them. Fandom was not like this when you were last a K-pop fan.

  2. You’ve watched your idol’s portions of a reality survival program so many times you know exactly what minute of what episode to fast-forward to. And of course you know his lines by heart.

  3. Your idol’s group name is some ridiculous form of Konglish that embarrasses you, but you tell yourself that it’s fine, because no one ever knew what the hell Fin Killing Liberty meant but it never stopped Hyori from becoming a superstar anyway.

  4.

  5. You actually set out to buy a physical CD for a K-pop group, which you haven’t done since the 20th century.

  6. You then learn that there are two different versions of the same goddamn album, which paralyzes you with indecision.

  7. Then you discover that they each come with a random member featured on the sleeve, and this means you have a 1-in-11 shot of getting the version you actually want. It somehow feels like worse odds than the lottery, and the thought depresses you.

  8.

  9. You watch every variety show appearance your idol has made, even if all he does is show up and eat. He makes the same jokes and does the same dance from show to show, but you laugh every time and clap in delight because he is the best thing since sliced bread. You’re convinced there will never be another star like him.

  10. You make a mental note to apologize to your friends for mocking them about their obsession with Rain back in the day. You get it now.

  11. You used to wonder why on earth K-pop fans took the time to individually film every single member’s version of the same performance separately. Who would watch this, you wondered. YOU, THAT’S WHO.

  12.

  13. You watch commercials for things you will never buy, all because your idol is being paid boatloads of money to model it.

  14. You’ve gone so deep into the Youtube catalogue that you’re now getting recommendations for clips of other celebrities who just mention your idol’s name.

  15. For the first time in your entire life, you find watching idol bromance fanfic to be a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon. You admit this to no one.

  16. You’re actually relieved that you don’t live in Korea, because then you’d be this lady:

  17.

  18. You’re pretty sure you’ve gone insane, but then you remember that this feels vaguely familiar. You try not to dwell on this, or what it means about your addictive personality. You’re fairly certain K-pop is safer than drugs. Probably.

  19. Your new favorite activity is watching videos dedicated to comparing your idol’s face to the puppies he resembles most.

  20. You consider getting a puppy and naming it after your idol. You then remember that you have a cat and he would scratch your eye out if you brought home a dog. You try changing your cat’s name, but he’s not having any of that.

  21. Then you learn that your idol raises cats and you die of cuteness overload.

I feel like I ghostwrited this. And tbh it’s all because of produce 101 too lol. I’m so into Jong-Hyun I even sacrificed my already little sleep time for night goblin. And I jam to produce 101 songs to work (never, I know you know and super hot are masterpieces) and when I have free time I’ll watch all the recommended videos in my YouTube homepage. Sigh last time I was this crazy was when I stanned mblaq which was like 3-4 years ago

It was a slow descent into kpophood. By the end, I just gave up and let it consume me. I still remember the days when I stubbornly refused to consider myself a part of a particular fandom - then one day I realized I couldn't lie anymore and gave myself up to the dark side. 🤣

Been a kpop fangirl since 2009 because of a certain Lee Gikwang, and here I am in my 30s still a fangirl. But my kpop catalogue has broaden over the years but still officially consider myself a fangirl of just 5 groups. It's so hard to control myself though, but there are a lot of kpop idol groups alone, but add other genres..it's totally insane.

But I wont have it any other way.

I think he is quite attractive and he has some acting chop. I really think that if he were a bit taller, he would have gotten much more acting jobs. You see most actresses in Korea tend to be tall at least 165cm so actors need to be taller, I guess.

You know you're obsess when you spend your birthday just watching YouTube video of your fave group. I'm kinda sad though not a lot shinee stan here. Super Junior got me started then big bang got me hooked. Then I realize I need to stop but I relapse when I got mighty curious about Shinee and I guess there is no turning back. Not anytime soon.

Hi, fellow SHINee stan :-) To me, you know you are obsessed when you lose a couple of decades off your mental age and start doing things you swore you never would (Instagram? Why would a cameraphobic need that? Surely not in order to watch an idol stare into his phone and talk to himself for twenty minutes in a language I can't decipher and with no hope of subtitles...)

On the upside, I have learnt all sorts of things on the back of my obsession: now I know how Twitter works, and that kind strangers will brave security to stream that concert that you will never, ever, be able to see live, because Europe does not exist for big Kpop promoters, so you can watch it at 3 am on a weekday, and curse the 8,000 miles between you and Japan. Sigh.

But other than SHINee, my interest in Kpop is rather slight. I like knowing about other groups, but I am always too lazy to sit down and listen to them. Sometimes I do stumble on songs I like enough to keep on my playlist, but most often I just forget again. And then it is back to singing made-up nonsense lyrics to Love like Oxygen and Woof Woof :-p ...

I was into Kpop before I got into Kdramas. I tried to watch my bias' (at that time) dramas but couldn't find what's so interesting about dramas that people are addicted to it (now that I think about it, maybe it's the dramas I watched at that time were simply at the 'not so good' spectrum. )

Then I stopped with kpop (still listens to them sometimes but I don't know anything that's happening after BTS debuted. BTS debut was the last thing I knew that happened in kpop world lmao. Look how big they are now xD) and after a few years found my way to kdrama :')

Then this year, I found Chief Kim and (re)discovered Junho with Seo Yul. While I know who he is before, I never really paid attention to him particularly tho I used to casually watch shows with 2PM in it. And then I started to be curious of how the idols that I knew are doing (okay, pretty heartbreaking that so many of them are disbanded. Felt like my teenage self is crushed. Thankfully 2PM is still together.) and then I'm on the kpop nostalgia train...

long story short, I somehow found myself saving kpop songs again. First the ones I had known years back and then newer ones. After that I started to watch old MVs... (laughing at the 2010s' make up - yes, I meant 'I'll Be Back' - while jamming to my teenage years' every day songs. *dance to rainism*) then newer songs (though I don't know that many), then somehow I'm watching dance practices... and variety shows... then... Oh, well. You know how it goes.

After that I found myself saving Junho's pics. From 10s it grown to 100s then 200s and now almost 800s. And I tried to be picky. (Does saving the same picture of the same angle and exact same moment from two different fansite sounds picky, now? )

I do promise to myself I'd just be a casual fan, though. I don't need the emotional investment that will make me happy one day and torn me apart on the other. (Wait, kdramas do that, too.) I try to be a casual fan.

This sounds like a confession post lol. I confess, my love for Kpop has come back. Not as hard as it was before, but bigger than it has been in the last four years, thanks to kdrama. And yes Junho (and 2PM), you invaded my life with Seo Yul.

Never thought it would happen to me. Then I caught an episode of Running Man with a million people on it and Seventeen. I watched "Mansae." It took a bit but it happened.

I don't think there's a cure. I now own all their CDs. Am thinking of buying a phone case. At least I can say it's my mid-life crisis.

Girlfriday summed up my life in 17 numbers. 😅

I used to think, 'I'm okay, I'm a normal fan, I won't become like -put friends' name here-' then gradually I began to routinely do number 7; then I casually started to have some fantasies, my sister told me that sometimes my random giggling scared her; thus using writing-is-always-the-reason-why-I-was-born I began writing fanfiction and telling myself that this was art, not some crap delusion; and then I realized it's 2017 already, and I'm not a student anymore, I have graduated, and employed, and resigned, and job hunting again, and when I see again, it turns out my friends who I used to mock have completely moved on long ago and live a normal life with husband or wife and their kids, and their house, and their job, and their pets. And I am still here, wishing November comes so fast so I can watch Jung Eun-ji soon.

I could relate to this article in so many levels. LOL. It's been so long since I really followed a group then I fell into the trap of Produce 101 Season 2 as well, and the rest is history. Basically I became a Wannaone trash.

Judging from the mentions of taking care of cats and comparing his face to dogs also made me realize that girlfriday is also a Kang Daniel fan. Daniel surely does attract a lot of fans!

I'm into Kpop too, but haven't experienced the same level as some of those in GF's list. The only mainstream group I really stan is Big Bang, but I don't think I've watched all the fanvids or Youtube vids and neither am I active in doing so. I think I pull out when I feel I'm getting in too deep. lol Liking Big Bang by extension has made me like all of YG artists too: 2NE1, Winner, Lee Hi, BlackPink

On the other hand, I am obsessed with DEAN, I luff him so! ♥ Him and more Khiphop/R&B artists like Epik High, Jay Park, Zico, Zion T, Suran, Crush, Dynamic Duo.. They technically don't count as Kpop though

I first heard of kpop because of dream high , i loved that drama soo much that i searched for suzy group , but i dint like much then one fine day i was watching this kpop song called haru haru and at that movement i fell in love with kpop songs , i never expected kpop songs to make sense , and all big bang songs were like drugs ......... and they completely changed my life .. because of big bang i started watching their variety shows , i still remember watching running man and how i excited i was about big bang win lol , after that there is no turning back now i watch all most all variety shows

I also thought I moved on from kpop when I started listening to only 'old' gayo and korean ballad songs like almost ten years back. but then I watched tvn's Problematic Men, where celebs solved abstract or puzzle questions, and I was trapped by Block B' Park Kyung. Never in my entire life have I thought to buy physical albums, go through the maze of downloading korean music streaming sites and entering a fandom chat group where I got lost in the slang. My playlist is full of khiphop, zico and block b's songs that had my officemate shaking his head. Lol. I will buy no new pair of pants this year because I bought albums. Girl got priorities!! I hope there are BBCs in here! Shoutout to Blocktober!

HAHAHHAHA!! OMG!!! THIS IS SO ME! I got sucked into the WORLD OF KING GODDAMN DANIEL and I can't get out!

I was never interested in watching P101, S1 or s2. But while watching Runnning Man, I saw Song Ji Hyo fangirl so hard over Kang Daniel/Wanna One and it got me curious. BIG MISTAKE!!! I watched P101 S2 in 2-3 days (kept repeating scenes too!), lost so much sleep, zombified at work and then proceeded to catch up on EVERYTHING Wanna One/ Kang Daniel was in. Watched EVERY youtube clip and raws, whatever, just to see KD and he NEVER fails to bring a smile to my face. I would sneak watching clips of him during work. Need my daily dose of KD. I'd draw hearts on my screen around his face. I have legit watched all variety shows they've appeared in AT LEAST 5 times! I'm sure it's more! Why am I not sick of it yet? I watched P101 S2 AGAIN, and I know for sure I'll end up watching it for the third time! I'm so obsessed and this craze is not dying down any time soon. I was OVER THE MOON to find out I HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON with MY SWEETIE! He has 2 cats which he named Peter and Rooney because he though they were male but turned out to be female. He still kept their names. I HAVE 2 CATS TOO! I thought they were both male so I named them Bamboo and Shinx. Turns out Shinx is FEMALE! HEEHEE!! One of my cats is ORANGE TOO... like MY SWEETIE'S!! HEEEHAHAHEHHE!!

Holy crap! I haven't stanned any group in ages! Not this hard. I liked Madtown only because of Jota for a little while. I like GOT7 because of Jackson for a little while. BUT THIS IS TOTALLY ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL! I can say I AM A WANNABLE! I'd pay to go to their concert/fanmeeting. I missed out on their Sydney KCON one because I discovered the group too late. I WAS MISERABLE! I would NEVER pay to see any kgroup except for Running Man, but I was willing to pay whatever amount of bling to see WANNA ONE!

KD is my bias, of course. But I adore Jihoon and Seongwu too! And Jisung is just hilarious! I like the group as a whole. My obsession is so crazy I have KD's P101 fancam focus performances downloaded onto my phone so I can watch him everyday! I listen to their album on repeat everyday! I've been like this for a month! And I'm a full grown married woman! What has Kang Daniel done to me?!

after reading that list, I'm not sure if I can call myself a true kpop fan. I can only knock off a few things off that list. I've been into kpop since my early/mid-teens - started off with boa, shinhwa, sechskies, koyote, and baby vox. I downloaded their songs, saved their pictures watched their mvs, tried to learn their dances, but that was really just it. But there wasn't youtube back then with an easily accessible treasure-trove of videos. In the past 2 years, I got into BTS- watched their mvs, their live performances, rehearsals for their live performances, making-of videos, variety appearances, specials, and so, so many fan compilations!

I start and end my day watching him on Youtube and browsing all videos related to #MinKyungHoon on instagram. It's like I can't get through the day without having my daily dose of his dimples.

LMAO! I feel... old. That was me way back then with Fly To The Sky and SG Wannabe. They were my first KPop loves, not for their appearances, but for their voices. I bought ALL their CDs, scoured the web for music videos, variety shows, etc. It culminated with SJ and slowly fizzled out after. While I still enjoy KPop these days, it's not the level of enthusiasm as before.

Speaking of K-pop, woke up to really sad news today that 3 members of Girls' Generation are leaving the group: Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun. It was bound to happen but I wasn't ready for it to actually happen just yet. SNSD was my gateway into Kpop and will probably be the only group I legit "stan". I started stanning SNSD after watching them on Intimate Note. They were so funny there and the episode was such a riot that there was no going back for me after that. (I still re-watch this on Youtube every now and then.) I started listening to their songs (still can't believe that I liked Kissing You and Gee considering that these are not the types of songs that I usually listen to) and watching more of their variety show appearances (loved how they roasted each other on variety shows).

I'm quite sad that the group is disbanding but it's really about time that they pursue individual careers after everything they have accomplished as a group. (*goes back to my SNSD playlist while looking back on the good old days*)

Wanna One: The New Nation's Boy Group (along with Twice: The New Nation's Girl Group)

The good thing about stanning Wanna One is it doesn't require a lot of commitment. You can stan to your heart's content now knowing they'll disband in a year and a half. At this point, I say skip buying their debut album (and risk not getting Daniel's sleeve) and just wait for their repackaged album in November.

i can definitely relate to this. I'm not into Kpop at all, just watched drama my whole life and supporting big bang a bit. But watching produce 101 season 2 definately taking a toll on myself, i could hardly do anything but google and search video of him / and 10 others at my spare (or not so) time. I started buying every posters he endorsed, buying slogans and whatnot. so far i'm only attending coldplay, kodaline, LANY, 30 seconds to mars, jason mraz, bastille, the script, linkin park (u get the gist) etc concert but this is the 1st time in my life i'm really excited to go for a kpop concert, even had few crazy ideas on how crazy my slogans would be. I also started overthinking a lot about him and worrying for him esp when he was bullied in elementary school, or felt so bad when he made a lot of dumb jokes and nobody laugh after him. I'm really old to be doing this, i should stop. sigh

Welcome to the Wannable fandom!

I relate to all 17 points.
I listen to K-pop since 2010. Never took a break but in the last few years I wasn't so invested like in the beginning. Then this year I had to write my thesis paper for Bachelor's Degree and I was so stressed that I fell into a drama slump. I have watched Produce 101 S1 last year and I loved it. I knew I had to watch Season 2 even with little time.
And so it began. I would watch the raw episodes every friday and the rest of the week I would rewatch clips on Youtube. I discovered that I know Korean well enough to understand 90% of the dialogues.
Daniel is also my favorite member and I like him a lot. After they debuted I watched every show Wanna One starred in + various fancams from fan-meetings and performances.
I even bought their album (Pink Ver). It was the first time I bought an album in my 7 years as a K-pop fan. I do feel a bit sorry for the other groups but I couldn't contain myself and I'm even thinking to buy the repackaged version that comes out next month. Oh! and guess what? I was actually lucky enough to get Daniel's cover card in the album.

Ugh... I was reminiscing my K-Pop fandom days with an essay-long comment and it got deleted when I searching for facts that I forgot. 😑 Now, I'll summarize it instead.

In secondary school, I got introduced to DBSK, SuJu, SS501, Big Bang, SHINee, and so on by my sister. I became their fan (listened their songs, and watched their MVs, live perf., variety shows like Fam. Outing and WGM) but apprently not hardcore enough. Eventually, I lost interest on them because of various reasons like too busy irl and group hiatus. Some members cont. solo or made new group but I didn't care enough for them. New groups popped out like mushrooms after rain just made me want to stay away from K-Pop world and I chose to stay in dramaland.

Ironically, a drama is what makes me turn back to K-Pop. I initially watched Chief Kim for NGM and later got intrigued by Seo Yul character among others. My first impression of him was "Who is this handsome guy? New actor? I never see him before." But ppfftt.. 😝😝😝😝😝 I checked out CK wiki and surprise... "He's Junho of 2PM?! 😲😲😲😲😲 I knew 2PM (watched Nickhun in WGM and from some other shows) but how come I couldn't recognize him." After CK ended, I checked out his IG and follow him because he has lot of cats pic (and he loves his cats) 😍😍😍. I also watched his movies and variety shows he appeared in, download and listen to his songs and 2PM's thus began my journey of stanning him and 2PM.

Since I'm in a drama slump, I'm digging out any shows that they appeared since before debut. For the first time, I even made a Twitter account (so I could get fansub ver. of their variety shows) and tried streaming Junho's new album on Genie. 🙈🙈🙈🙈

I tell myself that this is the only K-Pop group that I stan from now on. Although the group is currently in hiatus (military service) and the future is uncertain (their contracts will expire next Jan), I'll support their group and individual projects. 😙

Dramas and 2PM (and some other bias) are enough for me. 😉😉

relatable.
"Your idol’s group name is some ridiculous form of Konglish"
"even if all he does is show up and eat"
"getting a puppy and naming it after your idol"
"your idol raises cats"

I don't know if my brain playing trick on me but daniel is that you?

I'm actually glad that i never interested with any survival shows. I just cant stand it when it was showed that they had a hard time and made sad faces. No my weak heart cant stand it LOL. In my 6 years of being a kpop fan, i only have watched 2 survival shows (Produce 101 S1 and Show Me The Money S3) which i watched it when it was finished and i happened to watch it when i was flipping through the channels , so i already know who made it to the end as IOI, idk it gives me more assurance like 'its okay girl you'll make it' and i wont be that sad anymore if she was sad lol i dont even know if i made sense or not. For smtm3, i also watched it when i knew bobby came out as the winner. I really pitied him and b.i a lot when it was confirmed that they'll go on the show. Basically its like they entered a place filled with a pack of hyenas. Many people underestimated them as just another pretty idol from YG (when they werent even debuted yet). So when i learned he won, i watched it out of curiousity how he made it to the end. Anyway, seeing that a lot of people are buzzing because of wannaone and p101 s2 made me went "okay girl you've had enough with 3 boygroups on your plate. Enough is enough" haha so i dont think i'll watch it. Not like i ever had interest to it in the first place lol

I feel like you just wrote about my experience becoming a BTS fan a couple of years ago...

Once upon a time, I was mocking my sister because she was crazy about Exo. Never will I be a kpop fan, I said. A few years later, as I was browsing through youtube, a video came up. I'm just going to look, I said. And now here I am, severely Kim Taehyung-ed, inhaling every video, article, anything, regarding bts. The end.

Drama slump is real and this is so me being sucked in to the world of kpop. Except for who my bias is (Ain't mine obvious?).

I just love watching all their variety show guestings. They're variety gold I tell you. And even their photoshoots! Aaaahh! I have them all saved in my heart! *winks*

Seriously, I have never been into Kpop all my life. Well, until I happen to randomly watch an episode of PD 101 season 2. And now, I have 2 albums, an almost full phone memory composed of pics and vids and a ridiculously priced ticket for their fanmeet happening tomorrow! Omfg!!! I'm gonna be seeing them in about 39 hours!!!!

Can I say I restarted the exact same way? Was bored and thought I should see what all the produce 101 fuss was about. As I stayed longer on youtube for all the boys (so sad over how the final lineup went, but I'm glad many of them are debuting now, yay!) I realized my fave band from a few years ago, EXO had come out with new songs and from there on I just started opening up to more and more groups and songs and... yeah

I never thought I'll get dragged into the world of kpop but here I am, a total trash for DAY6 and their music. Well granted, they're not the typical kpop group.

Btw to anyone who has never heard of them and is into pop-rock band music, I recommend checking them out! Listen to "You Were Beautiful" or "I Loved You" first for emotional k-drama ballad ost feels, or if you want something heavier or hard rock, listen to "I Need Somebody", "I Wait", "How Can I Say", and "Lean On Me".
