Age of Youth 2 adds new housemates, secures premiere date

Han Ye-ri, Park Eun-bin, Han Seung-yeon

All of a sudden we have a lot of movement on the sequel season to JTBC’s campus drama Age of Youth, which has confirmed all of its cast members (most of them familiar faces, with a couple new ones in the mix) as it readies for its initial script read, with August fixed for its premiere.

Most of the cast members and character descriptions will be familiar to you, but one did really surprise me: Park Hye-soo, who played the shy freshman through whose eyes we initially saw this drama unfold, will not be returning as originally planned, and her character has been recast. This was a breakout role for Park so I’m really surprised she won’t be coming back, but her reps have cited schedule conflicts with a movie; she is slated to begin filming Swing Kids this summer with Exo’s D.O.

Her character, Eun-jae, will instead go to Ji-woo, who’s appeared in several movies and dramas but is still a new name; she played child roles in Age of Feeling and You’re All Surrounded, and was recently the lead in MBC’s mini-drama Three Color Fantasy: Universe’s Star. She also shares a management agency with series lead Han Ye-ri, who will be reprising her role as Jin-myung, the eldest of the roommates of the Belle Epoque share house who worked every hour of the day and hardly ever betrayed the burden she felt from her poverty.

Park Eun-bin and Han Seung-yeon are the other two also returning to the show, Park as friendly and adorable pervy liar Ji-won (how she made those traits work together, I don’t know, but she did and rocked it) and Han playing Ye-eun, the hapless-in-love girl with terrible taste in boyfriends. Ryu Hwa-young had played the fifth roommate in the first season, but will only be returning in a guest appearance; she’ll be busy filming her weekend drama Father Is Strange for a few more months yet.

Ji-woo, Choi Ara

The new fifth roommate will be played by rookie actress Choi Ara, described as simply “the tall girl,” which Choi suits given her background as a fashion model.

The story kicks off one year after Season 1, with Jin-myung having gone off to China after the end of the first season to find herself. She has now successfully found full-time employment, which is a relief because her miserable life with all her miserable jobs was at times painful to watch.

Ye-eun has taken a year off from school, following her kidnapping and abuse at the hands of her slimy boyfriend. Ji-won is single as ever and still cares more about dating than finding a job, and maknae Eun-jae, who had that adorable campus romance with her sunbae, is now hurting after being dumped. (What? Nooooo, you can’t break up that couple, even if one of them got recast with a new face! They were the bright light of that show!)

That’s when the new roommate, Jo-eun (Choi Ara), arrives to move into Kang Unni’s (Ryu Hwa-young) old room. She insists she’s not quite 180 cm tall (feeling self-conscious of her height), and is shrouded in some mystery; all that we’re told is that her arrival is due to one letter, but we don’t know why.

As for the men: Onew (Descended From the Sun) has signed on to romance Han Seung-yeon, hopefully giving her a much better loveline this time around. Kim Min-seok (Doctors, Defendant) will play the proxy for the chic grandma landlady of Belle Epoque. I’m guessing he’ll be someone’s love interest, perhaps?

Age of Youth 2 will take up the Friday-Saturday timeslot in late August, following Kim Hee-sun and Kim Sun-ah’s Woman of Dignity, which starts next weekend after the end of Man to Man.

Can't they just cast 2 new roommates instead of having a different actress playing Eun Jae? And having her coming to Bell Epoque post break up? You cant give us the adorable senior and expect him to dumb Eun Jae now!

Looking forward to the romance department especially with Onew.. What a cutie.. :D <3

Exactly! I really dislike the idea of having another actress playing the same role–especially when the cast is the same, it's a continuation of the first part, and/or it's not a spinoff where every character's got a different face. Argh.

While I thought Eun-jae and her beau were cute and I would've loved to see them again, it makes me sad to know they ended up breaking up. Those two were such cute puppies, so it's sad that it didn't work out for them.

Yeah seriously. Re-casting was a really bad idea! I rather have them say that she transferred to another school or even died in a tragic accident...

man...i need an edit button...lol

i'm disappointed at the replacement of an actress to resume the same character. it would have been better to have just had her be studying abroad for a year (very possible while at uni) or deciding to leave the house (also okay). how the belle epoque was run made the possibility of new roommates quite reasonable (see eun-jae's appearance as the new roomie).

I understand adding new characters but getting a different actress to play the same character?... no, just no. To be honest all the changes are not setting well with me. If they were to have a second season they should have done everything possible to secure the original cast. Even if it meant delaying the show until the end of the year or beginning of next year. I don't know I am really disappointed in what the second season is turning out to be :(.

I share the same sentiment. But not disappointed yet.

It's better if they just drop the character when the actress turned down the role, and write a new character if they insist on 5 roommates. I never have experience watching the same character played by 2 different people, so I feel weird.

But, perhaps they already have a script ready and do not want to re-write everything, and delaying the drama because one actress finally turned down the role (I thought she already confirmed long time ago, or was it a long time ago it was reported that she was considering? That is such a long period of considering a role. Honestly, when I read she was cast in a film with DO, I have a feeling she would turn down the role in Age of Youth.) would mean delaying it forever when finally they could settle the schedule with the other 3 (+1 guest appearance).

Her agency is quite something in my opinion. I sincerely wish they don't push her too much, and let her gain experiences accordingly. I am more worry because I foresee they want to put her in leading lady territory soon.. She was just debuted as actress in 2015, that in early 2017 getting adult lead role (Introvert Boss) was quite fast? They should also balance her career, not only acting but singing too. It looks like this girl loves to perform on stage.

I agree, they really should've just dropped her character, but like you said, maybe they already had all these materials and didn't wanna waste it or spend more time on writing and adding in a new character, which is a bummer, but it is what it is.

Though not a lot, I've experienced the feeling of seeing two different people playing the same character and lemme tell ya, it's weird.

I share the same sentiments with you in regards to having another actress play the same character. Sigh, why do they do this to us so much? I especially don't like it when we've got same actors reprising their roles, too. Are we supposed to just all pretend that this new face is the same person we've smiled, laughed and cried for for one whole season? Eh, I don't think there was ever a time when I was okay with this. I still laugh at the time when they suddenly replaced Helen w/ another lady on Drake and Josh. Lol, everyone acted normal, but I was like, "wait, what? What's going on? Where's Helen!?"

Anyways, other than that, I'm actually now quite okay with the changes and just wanna see the show already.

The only explanation I can think of on why an original character will return despite a different actress is because the writer has a story in mind for her that might affect the whole plot?

Yea I think so. I was hoping they just write a new character if they insist on 5 roommates. But seeing they're desperately casting another actress to play Eun Jae, I am guessing they have a script ready - and Eun Jae character is vital to the plot.

PHS just recently on May got offered to act in the movie with D.O "Swing Kids" , and the talk about season 2 of AOY already started from early this year. I suspect, the writer already pursued to write script with these 4 characters aside Kang Yi Na, because her agency probably already unoffically agreed (or could have been agreed) about her joining season 2. But that movie offer is quite tempting to decline with, and due to schedule conflict they can only choose one. The writernim probably will have to re-write a lot if they have to insert new character to replace Eun Jae, so the solution is to choose another actress.

Ji Won without a love story is actually pretty interesting for me. Because when you're in college, there's always that one person (or two or three or more) who's always been single despite wanting to be in a relationship. Because the other roommates are seen with love interests, Ji Won being there single is pretty refreshing. At least for me.

In theory, I agree with you, but Ji-won is one of my all-time favorite characters and I so want her to get a swoony romance. I need to see someone else adoring her as much as I do, despite her OTTness. But I agree, they don't have to pair everyone up.

Liked Ji-woo in Universe’s Star, best plot out of Three Color Fantasy. Thought I've seen her somewhere before, then realized that she reminds me so much of Anna Hathaway...
Casts are shaping up well, crossing fingers for great plot too. Am kinda tired of having mystery thread in every drama now, but first season did worked it well.

Ooh, maybe I should watch her part of the Color Fantasy series, since I've checked out the other two. I saw her for the first and only time in You're All Surrounded as Go Ara's child counterpart, and quite liked her there.

And yes, I'd like for them to hold the mystery, as well, but I have a feeling our old and new girls may come with baggage that they'll need to unload and resolve, which is fine.

Although I am sad Eun Jae will be replaced by somebody else, but what is more crucial for me is the writer. I believe she can make it works. I mean even the all original casts return but we get somebody else to be the writer, the spirit of AOY will be different and could be a disappointment. It could turn out as mere romcom.

Anyway I am glad to at least have Han Ye Ri & Park Eun Bin around. I would be really sad if we don't get to see Song Ji Won around in season 2, acted by none other than Park Eun Bin. Hope Yoon Park can appear as well.

I am glad jTBC back to produce more mature content drama. I am at lost after claimed myself as jTBC girl last year but none of jTBC drama caught my interest so far for thisbyear. Woman of Dignity looks interesting, but the writer made me worry.

I'm putting my faith in the writer too. It would've been simpler to replace Eun-jae's character since the actress is busy, but if Writer-nim opted to keep the character in despite having to replace the face, she must've had more stories to tell about our maknae.

I just hope that theyll still focus on the Belle Epoque girls rather than lovelines.

Anyways I'm super excited about this second season. I absolutely loved Age of Youth. It was such a heartwarming drama to sit back and relax too. Not to mention funny. I'm not too upset that Eun Jae is recast (though it does kind of suck) but I am sad that Ryu Hwa-young won't be there anymore.

Ehhh! I'm not liking these changes! If the actress can't participate because of scheduling conflicts then change the character not the actress! That will interfere with my enjoyment of the show. Deep sigh. So many changes.

Whoa, that was a lot of new info–which is good because I'm super duper looking forward to this drama!

While I was surprised to read that Park Hye-soo wasn't returning, I didn't really mind too much because if I had to choose to write off any of of the girls, she'd probably be one of the firsts. #sorrynotsorry
Now, what I DO MIND and actually dislike is that they're gonna have another actress take over her role? What? No. Can we please just not do that? I honestly don't see why they don't just give us a reason for Eun-Jae's absense, close her story there, and have Ji-woo be another new roomie!? Smh. Speaking of which, I thought she looked so familiar and now I remember that she played the younger version of Go Ara in You're All Surrounded! I actually loved her there and thought she was pretty, charismatic and very spunky. Good to see her again!

This is my first time seeing Choi Ara, but I already love her look and can even imagine her in her charater, so I think it's fitting. Can't wait to see her, too.

Excited for the boys! They sound like decent, good men and boy do we need more of that this time around. I'm hoping Jin-myung's cutie chef beau will still be in this because he was pretty much the sweetest guy. I still crack up at the thought of him proudly using and sharpening the knife that she gave him every time she passed by. Kyyyyyaaaa, cute! Omg, and Ji-won's sunbae! What was that little tease where he suddenly thought she was cute and had heart eyes for her? That ended just as soon as it began! I need more of that/him/them, please.

I'm so excited for this because August is just right around the corner! Yayyayyay! Can't wait for the gals, the guys, chic af landlady, the soundtrack(!), and the crazy shenanigans that I'm sure will ensue! So long as Ji-won sunbae's there.

This new girl also being described simply by a physical attribute: the tall one, seems slightly worrying to me. Hopefully they're just trying to keep her mysterious and they have more of an arch sketched out for her, because the character depth was what I loved the most about the first season.
