Ryu Hwa-young nabs leading role as unsmiling weathercaster in KBS drama special
by chickachunga
Yay! Rising actress Ryu Hwa-young (Age of Youth) has confirmed her first leading role in a new KBS drama special titled Disqualified Laughter. She is set to play the role of Shin Na-ra, a weathecaster whose beauty is praised by all, but is considered an “unsmiling princess” by men. Her ideal man is someone who can bring her to laugh, and a meticulous and humorless meteorologist named Lee Ji-ro tries to win her heart by attempting to do just that.
Previously, Ryu Hwa-young had supporting roles in Ex-Girlfriend Club and Come Back Ajusshi, but her most recent role as Yi-na in the JTBC drama series Age of Youth really put her on the map as a young talent to keep an eye on. She impressed viewers with her portrayal of a no-nonsense roommate who attracted men left and right, only to drop her sugar baby lifestyle in order to embark on her dreams and live independently.
I absolutely loved Ryu Hwa-young in Age of Youth and am so happy to see her land her first leading role! She showed a range of emotions and a vulnerability in Age of Youth, so I can already picture her as a weathercaster who doesn’t just flash a smile for anyone, but wants to find her laughter.
Disqualified Laughter is expected to air sometime in September.

For once, I do hope either Viki or Dramafever will carry this special. They are known not to carry the licenses for most of KBS shorter "special" dramas and I would love to see RHY in this. I love her slow and steady climb from small roles and bit parts to lead role. And she has proven she has the acting chops for this, plus she's so natural on screen, beautiful with a killer body. You go girl!

I love how she brings so much more to what could have been a basic 'beautiful sexy seductress' kind of role. I adore Kang unnie, and I'm not even halfway through Age of Youth!
Hope this is a sign of better things to come for Hwayoung's acting career - she certainly has the talent, and in a looks-focused industry, even on that score she's BOMB. She may look like Park Shin-hye but they're nothing alike in terms of acting styles.

That description sounds so funny! :D I'm sad it's only 1 ep. Can't we have 2-3? *puppy eyes at KBS*
And can we have her co-star be the bestfriend gigolo from Age of Youth? It's just... I had a shipping quota. And it wasn't 100% fulfilled.

I first noticed her in Come Back Ajusshi.. Already knew of her & her twins since their idol days but that's it
In AOY, my initial impression was Oh, this is PSH when she grows up.. Lol.. Only to find out RHY is younger than PSH. Must be the height

she did really well with her part in age of youth. my favorite of the four. and i was surprised by how expressive her face could be. although, maybe that's just her face looks and not necessarily a testament to her acting skills. i'm a bit cautious of making an overstatement on her, since she hasn't done very much yet. but from what she HAS done so far, she seems really promising.
she had a small part in come back mister too, and even there she made an impression on me. i remember thinking her facial expressions seemed surprisingly good, and for such a small role, she brought a bit of depth to her character.

I love her so much. With right direction & roles she can shine. Praying hard she will not just stuck being a bitchy second female lead in the future. We all how many underrated actresses who just stuck playing same roles over & over again, and just stay at secondary / supporting roles for ages and someone who cannot act being the first lead, which is really frustrating.
I wonder who will be her partner here, the reunion with his bf in AoY would be a good idea ✌

So glad for her. Before AoY I only saw her in CBA and the short DotS cameo. More full-length dramas for her please!

I like her! She's very promising from what we've seen so far and she has the looks and body, too. I loved Kang Unnie the most out of the girls in AOY. Let her unite with male bestfriend here please!

Yeah! More love to Kang unnie!
My wish is to see both Hwa Young and Hyo Young together in a drama about twins! Make it happen drama gods!
I think Hyo Young is the one who started acting first right? She was in Jungle Fish and School 2013..

Figured AoY would be a stepping stone for the relative newbie young actresses in the cast and not surprised at all that RHY is the 1st to see fruition.
W/ RHY, Park Hye-soo, Park Eun-bin, Lee Seon-bin, etc. - there may be hope for K-actresses in their early/mid 20s (and not just the likes of Park Bo-young and Shim Eun-kyung carrying the torch).
There seemed to be a dearth of talented actresses in that age group unlike the 14-19 yrs age group where there are numerous talented actresses.

Someting that puzzled me throughout AoY, is that she really reminds me of Park Shin-Hye.
Anyone think this is as well?

Im glad shes getting a lead role! Ive liked er since her idol days when she was supposed to debut with her twin sister but then debuted in T-ara. Its good to see she had another chance in the industry and that shes doing well! Even tho shes great as the sexiest of the bunch, its good shes going to portray what sounds like a serious professional woman because I think she can do a variety of roles and she can avoid being typecasted.

is it something that's given for these two tv stations to air dramas with similar theme at almost the same time?
