Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
How was your week in dramas? What floated your boat, or sank your ship?
I feel like it’s always feast or famine around here; either I’m scrounging for something to watch and dissatisfied by everything, or drowning in so many dramas it’s a wrench deciding what to prioritize, or set aside for later. I’d like to say I’ll sleep when I’m dead, but let’s not tempt fate like that, shall we? —javabeans
javabeans
Currently recapping: Uncontrollably Fond
Mirror of the Witch: What would it take to get more Yoon Shi-yoon and Kim Sae-ron scenes around here? I love those characters and the actors are great (especially him), and while the villain is an awesome piece of work (in all senses), I’m ready for more development with our two main characters. Aren’t there wishes needing fulfilling?
Beautiful Gong Shim: The longer the kidnapping storyline drags on, the easier I find it to completely shut off my brain in all scenes not involving Gong Shim and Dan-tae. I always felt that, but at least tried to care about the kidnapping for the story’s sake, but now I don’t bother. And did everyone else see Gong Shim without her wig and want to shove it back on her head? Minah’s very pretty, but it totally loses the Gong Shim magic to see her looking so… normal.
Wanted: This show makes me bloodthirsty; I want more darkness, more spine-tingling chills, more unearthed skeletons (figurative, I mean, although I suppose literal ones would also fit the bill). I just… want a little more desperation from Mom, more immediacy; she seems very sad that her son’s been kidnapped, of course, and also very eager to get him back. It’s just, I saw God’s Gift and Lee Bo-young was incredible — that mom was badass like a mofo.
Lucky Romance: God I love Ryu Joon-yeol. And Je Su-ho. I’m not sure which I love more. Never make me choose.
Doctors: I continue to watch, finding it breezy and pleasant, and I love the way Kim Rae-won delivers his lines. Such a natural. I’m still meh on the plot, but I find this show reminiscent of Descended From the Sun in that regard; the plot is really just a romance delivery vehicle. The banter and chemistry sell the story, not the other way around.
HeadsNo2
Beautiful Mind: This drama seems to be flying under the radar when it really, really shouldn’t be. Jang Hyuk’s performance in this is sublime, and harks back to his Chuno days, where his acting earned him a nomination at the International Emmy Awards. It’s the kind of role that could’ve only been played by him, humanized by him, and subsequently owned by him. Seriously, I don’t know how else to convince everyone that they should be watching this show, short of a song and dance number.
Wanted: Each episode keeps me on the edge of my seat, though I admit to being a bit disappointed that the show within the show has lost its guerrilla-style format. So many exciting things happen that aren’t filmed for the reality show, which is a shame—if they think they’re getting high ratings now (the fictional kind), I wonder what they’d get if they made sure the heroine had a camera crew filming her 24/7. All the material’s there, they just need to know how to use it.
gummimochi
Beautiful Mind: I was initially behind on this series, but it’s now become the series I look forward to the most every week. Not only is it beautifully directed, the stellar cast makes the already intriguing hospital mystery come alive. Jang Hyuk is absolutely dominating in this role, even bringing me close to tears this week. Don’t be deceived by the ratings — this is definitely a show everyone should watch.
Wanted: Much like everyone else, the premise reminds me of a mix between God’s Gift—14 Days and Liar Game. I wish the pacing was a bit more suspenseful, but I definitely still like the show. The Uhmforce is strong here, and Ji Hyun-woo makes a good cop.
Police Unit 38: If only I could bend the time-space continuum to 72 hours a day in order to fit more episodes of this show into my schedule. But alas, I remain a casual viewer. The heist (and its obstacles) make for a fun watch, even though it’s taking some time to get our core group together. But no matter, since the Ma Dong-seok and Seo In-gook combination is awesome.
Uncontrollably Fond: Kim Woo-bin, need I say more? Sure, I’ll say more. The show follows a familiar melodrama formula with a paint-by-numbers backstory, but there’s a definite spark in the acting chemistry between Kim Woo-bin and Suzy.

Currently recapping: Dear My Friends
Monster: Things I like about this show: the ladies, rare moments of actual revenge and espionage, Park Ki-woong’s flashy suits. Things I don’t like about this show: endless boring squabbles about who has more power, all the ridiculous (and unsuccessful) ways they keep trying to keep Ki-tan and Soo-yeon apart (hypnosis!), the fact that it’s still 50 episodes.
Police Unit 38: I love it so muuuuuuuuuuuch. When a show captures my ardent devotion within the first episode, I expect the cracktastic sparkly sheen to gradually wear off, but to my delight it continues to be awesome and the show I most look forward to each week.
Beautiful Mind: I didn’t intend to give this show more than just a passing glance when I was checking out the slew of premieres a few weeks ago. Medical dramas are not my cup of tea, but every time I had the urge to drop it, something unexpected and fascinating would happen and I’d be reeled back in. Now I’m officially hooked and desperate to know what’s really going on in this hospital.

Dear My Friends: A wonderful, truly exquisite viewing experience from beginning to end. Wouldn’t take back any of the tears I shed because my heart was thoroughly warmed by the selfless aunties and uncles who taught me a thing or two about friendship, family, and this fickle thing called life.
Uncontrollably Fond: I came for the Woobz, but I stayed for the… well, Woobz. Happy to see him back on TV. Suz is alright. Pororo is <3. Taekie’s dad got a perm and what do you know, still lovable since ’88.
mary
Police Unit 38: This show is weird because there are episodes where they just run around setting a lot of things up. Not that watching Bear Sung-il fail at conning isn’t fun, I just see why some Beanies think it’s slow. But I like it! All that preparation builds the anticipation so that once the trap is set, it gets very intense and you find yourself holding your breath and gritting your teeth with every setback, willing the baddies to “just sssign the contract… ssssiiiiign it… my preciousssss…”
Noble My Love: This show is nothing new when it comes to rom-coms. It’s like those french fries your sis asked you to watch while she washes her hands at McDonald’s. You don’t order it yourself because you know it’s just potato and fat and salt and what’s special about that? But it’s there in front of you and you’re bored so you take one fry, just one. Then you realize you miss some good old salty fatty potatoes so you take another. And another. And another… until you end up finishing the whole thing and thinking that salty fatty potatoes, once done right, can be fun. Noble My Love is the french fries that, once eaten, make you Google Sung Hoon and consider watching Five Kids even when you don’t have time for 50-episode dramas.
Memory: It reminds me a bit of Punch in that we start with a very unethical, unlikable hero. Then he gets an incurable disease that (presumably) makes him want to fix some things in his life. The thing is, I already watched Punch and I don’t see this ending well. I picked this up to get rid of Signal feels but if it hurts more than Signal, what’s the point? I might have to drop this or save it for when I’m getting too happy with life. Maybe when I attend a Song Jae-rim fanmeet?

Only watching MotW right now. I agree that it could have been shorter, but I'm okay with it either way. I think lately, I'm back in a, "there's nothing amazing to watch!" funk. So I guess I should pick up Beautiful Mind? If HeadsNo2 says so, maybe I should. Where is girlfriday? I miss her remarks on MotW and YSY.

Squad38 - great in every way
MOTW - was good until the story got repetitive. Same villain, same tricks just like Jackpot.
Wanted - liking it so far
UF - watched 2. 2nd was better then 1st. Dropping it.
LR - glad I dropped it after only 2.
GongShim - dropped it after ep 10
Doctors - Started ep 4 and got too cheesy. Dropped it.
Looking forward to Good Wife on tvN but they better not repeat CIIT & OHYA as both fizzled out in last episodes. I want GW to keep me intrigued like Signal.

I am stuck in the middle of episode 5 of Beautiful Mind. I just can't get into it and I am not sure if I will continue watching. It just makes me miss I remember you.
On the other hand, I really, really love Squad 38. It's amazing and the highlight of my TV weel.

I haven't watched BM yet, so do you mind telling me how similar it is to I remember you? I loved that drama x 10, so if it's similar enough, I might consider watching it.
Squad 38 rocks.

I think the similarity is mostly the psycholgy of the main character and his upbringing. And the crime theme. That's pretty much it.

Totally get and love Mary's fries analogy on "Noble My Love". I was scanning and Netflix and noticed this once started - I finished 8 eps into 1:30 am. It is just like watching an manga come to life. Since I read manga - SJ was just too cute - not the best acting but they were both cute in their roles. Who doesn't love a tall, handsome, rich guy to fall over heels for you. Just check turn off the logic in your brain and go for the moment!
Love Police Unit 38- it is the drama that I looked forward to each week. Don't find it slow at all but learning how easily people can be scammed. I almost got scammed from 2k from vacation home rental from homeaway.com and I have used that site before with no problems. Just never wire money - better safe than sorry and rent a place with multiple reviews.
Doctors - kinda like DOTS but still good.
Even though I have no time to watch anything else.. I always go back to rewatch Healer :) Totally miss hanging out at the Healer Comments section - where everybody was high and happy! Happy Birthday to JCW!!

Aw, I'm sorry and relieved you almost didn't get scammed. Ok, that came out bizarre. I'm sorry you almost got yourself scammed, and relieved you didn't actually get scammed. That's better.
Scamming is a lot easier than people think, because it preys on people's desire to get things the easy way. You see a deal, and you jump on it, afraid it might escape from you, and you don't have enough time to think it over. And even if you did, there's always the chance you don't want to miss such a "rare" opportunity regardless and are willing to take the chance. Hell, if gambling is popular, it's not a surprise scamming works. If we think about it, all those "deals" and "sales" and marketing promises, or cults and sects are all scams as well. Luring you in to do things you didn't think of doing in the first place, at your own cost.

If jcw stands for Ji chang wook btw, I think he would also play a great Jung do. Nobody can pull off suave smartass like Seo In Guk, but JCW would bring in different charms to his Jung Do. A hint of melancholy and vulnerability in those eyessss. Foxy eyes, vs. puppy eyes. Hard to choose.

@6sj - thanks for your concern. Property pictures and clear details but when the contract came over with address - I couldn't find the house on Google map. I asked and they siad it was there and kept asking me to wire money to an overseas bank. Looked too fishy and just passed -I googled somemore and the address was actually a small company.

Doctors: 100% agree with JB.
This drama definitely gives off the vides that dots gave: Great chemistry, witty dialogue, cute comedic scenes but not much going on with the plot :/ I'm just watching it for KRW and the lightheartedness really. Seriously though like JB said, he's so natural with the line delivery. I'm being completely sold by the most cheesiest and cringeworthy dialogues. This man and his smile and his deep voice~ melts**
Let's eat 2 : I know it's one of the older drama but I'm finally completing it now. I was watching it while it was still airing and I was really enjoying it but for some incomprehensible reason I stopped watching it back then :/... But after re-watching splash splash love last night, I needed more of yoon doo joon
Uncontrollably fond: Im 1/4 through the first episode and i don't know if I should continue. I was expecting it to be light romantic comedy sort of drama so I was really disappointed to find out that it's a melo... I'd really like to avoid such dramas and save my heart from all the heartbreaks. At least for the summer period. I'll probably watch it in October/November time, so I can snuggle in my bed and cry myself to sleep lol
Lucky romance, beautiful gong shim : currently taking a break from them both. Shall resume soon ?

HeadsNo2, I'm 1000% with you on Beautiful Mind. It's gorgeously written, directed and filmed - with Jang Hyuk so brilliant he is definitely taking me back to his Chuno magnificence. That last long scene (starting at the betrayal) in episode 6 absolutely knocked me out and I found myself inextricably drawn back over and over and over his desperate cry for help in the middle of the street. It tore my heart out and turned me on all at the same time and I don't quite know how or why - it was just SO powerful. I'm watching ALL the dramas right now. Brilliant Mind is my #1, followed almost in the same nano=second #1 place by Lucky Romance and then Gong Shim. We have a veritable plethora of good dramas right now. The drought is over! Yay!

Oh my.
Finally there is one in DB team watching Five Children for Sung-hoon, because certainly i am since the 1st eps. I never followed a 50'ish eps of weekend drama. But one day am just so bored and need a feel-good family-troupe kind of frama, voila Five Children pop up in my screen.
The lead couple is so so, i mean they're sweet caring and else but thats it. No character development, you don't have the urge to cheering them along the story.
But Sang Min (Sung-hoon) and Yeon Tae (Hye Sun) are so adorbs! Its their story who keep me watching this weekend drama.
Sung-hoon made me hate his character in the beginning and now rooting for him.
And the chemistry is off the charts!
You should see Sung hoon and Hye Sun's banter in Happy Together.
My cheekbones is hurt just watching them.
Love is all around for sure ❤️

so glad one of DB team watching Five Kids or Five Children! *high five Mary!*
I never thought that i will be able to follow a 50-eps of weekend drama. But one day am just so bored and anxious, need a feel-good family-troupe kind of drama. Voila, Five Kids or Five Children pop up in my screen.
The lead couple story is so-so for me, they're sweet caring and else. But thats it, no significant character development. You don't feel the urge to love or hate them.
But its different with the supporting couple, Sang Min (played by Sung Hoon) and Yeon Tae (played by Hye Sun). THEY ARE SO CUTE!
I hate Sang Min character in the beginning, but now i forgot since which eps i actually rooting for him and Yeon Tae. They made the weekend drama into a rom-com one. Hahaha.. And a very cringey-worthy but super adorable!
Their chemistry is off the charts!
When i saw them promoting the drama in Happy Together, i know the chemistry is on and off screen :D
Dang, the blushes are not fake.
My heart can't handle it..ottokee~
So yeah, if you have time now or later, you may want to check this drama. Just watch their part, really. Hahaha

I am also watching 5 kids. Actually my favorite character of the show is Mi-jung (So Yoo-jin). I just love LOVE her natural acting. Sung Hoon is good, but I still don't like Yeon Tae character/actress (I watched HT too). They look so unmatched. I wanted to see more of Golf couple bickering, but never happened.

watching uncontrollably fond (hate that title, who comes up with these?), wanted, and the good wife. also watching some of the weekend dramas, but not following them super closely.
i hunted up the first episode of the good wife when i read that jeon do-yeon would be starring in a remake of it. was suprised by how closely the first episode of the korean episode mirrored the original. it's not a bad thing! i guess i was expecting the korean version to take more liberties. i haven't watched beyond the first episode of the original, so i don't know how the second episode stacked up, but i really enjoyed it. it's a treat to see jeon do-yeon in a drama again. currently, i think the good wife is probably my first pick.
wanted is... wanting. i didn't want to criticize and compare it to god's gift, because god's gift was seriously fantastic. i still remember how i felt after watching the first two episodes—heart pounding, literally breathless. wanted gives me none of that. maybe it isn't fair to compare. but it's not totally gripping and i only find myself watching in order to obtain the newest developments. it's exciting enough to watch in that it's a mystery and i MUST know why her son was kidnapped.
but it's kim ah-joong's acting that i really don't like. she needs to bring more intensity, more fire, more desperation to her character. more lee bo-young-like dammit! if only SHE were good, it would make the show that much more exciting. i want to reach through my screen and shake her by the shoulders so she brings more emotion to her role.
uncontrollably fond—apart from her shouting moments where she was rather bad, suzy's acting was quite all right for me. and she's SO pretty to watch. albeit, this is not a show i would watch for the plot alone if the actors weren't appealing/good/interesting.

OMG, Uncontrollably fond really start with a good start..I'm hooked. I wish they casted with a better actor, Simply Suzy's character is written for not just eye candy like I predicted, Suzy really doesn't know how to add depth into her acting OMG... But She is sometimes did something right in emotional scene, but when the character is supposed to add depth, she fall short. But I I think she is quite watchable so far. Kim Woo Bin is decent, despite I really think a better actor will make Shin Joon Young more interesting. But It's already promising. What a nice set up... Can't wait to see more of this.

I really really love it and not just mainly for SIG but for the witty and well-tied plot, that is like a spiderweb, no thread is there without reason and at some point the fly will be caught. and it wont know till it touches the net...and the spider will come and suck it dry.
