She Was Pretty: Episode 8

As Sung-joon spends more time getting to know Hye-jin, it gets harder for him to ignore the little doubts that crop up whenever she reminds him of his childhood friend. But with the beautiful Ha-ri insisting she’s Hye-jin, it’s no wonder he’s so confused that he starts to fall apart. He’s already carrying some pretty big professional and personal baggage, and his conflicted feelings aren’t making his life any easier these days.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Shin-hyuk spies Ha-ri kissing Sung-joon, and spins Hye-jin around to fold her in a backhug so she won’t see. She breaks his hold right away so he tells her someone is drunk and urinating in the street, and hustles her away quickly.

Meanwhile Ha-ri continues her confession, telling Sung-joon that she wants to be more than his childhood friend – she wants to be his girlfriend. She asks for an answer and he thinks about it for so long, she assumes he’s not interested, but Sung-joon comes to a decision and leads her away.

Hye-jin is still annoyed with Shin-hyuk for letting her think the family dog was a real little sister, but he has more serious things on his mind. He asks if her roommate is the same friend she considers her other half, guessing they must be very close.

Hye-jin tells him that they’ve been friends since birth, because their mothers were friends. She says that when something good happens to her, Ha-ri is the only person who’s truly happy for her. Shin-hyuk just rolls his eyes at that, knowing better, but he looks at the pictures of Ha-ri on Hye-jin’s phone to humor her.

He grumbles that she’s way prettier, only Hye-jin assumes he’s teasing her again. Torn between wanting her to know the truth and not wanting to ruin her image of her best friend, Shin-hyuk lets it go for now.

Sung-joon takes Ha-ri to a wall where he once carved a cartoon of himself and the real Hye-jin. They’d agreed to come back here at junior high graduation, but he’d moved away. Now Sung-joon finds it still there, but Ha-ri asks if they can stop talking about the past anymore — the present is more important to her.

Sung-joon takes out a pen and makes another drawing on the wall, of the two of them as adults, and agrees not to talk about the past anymore. Ha-ri uses her lipstick to draw a heart around his doodle. But when she drives home, she doesn’t look happy, and just lays her head on her steering wheel.

The guy she sometimes dates is waiting for her and asks why she doesn’t return his calls anymore. She tells him he’s out, so he insults the guy she must be dating now, and she nearly knocks his block off.

She rounds the corner and finds Hye-jin, who overheard that she’s dating someone. Ha-ri seems about to come clean until Hye-jin grabs her in a hug, excited for her friend. Hye-jin remembers Ha-ri saying she would never fall in love, because she couldn’t handle a man leaving her like her mother did.

Hye-jin is curious about this amazing man capable of making her friend change, but Ha-ri doesn’t say a single word as Hye-jin chatters. Hye-jin runs off to get some celebratory beers, and calls back to Ha-ri that she’ll be cheering on her love. Ha-ri thinks to her friend that she’s sorry, but she just wants to be with him for the two months that he’s here.

Sung-joon arrives home to have the life scared out of him by Shin-hyuk, who’s let himself in again and is now going through Sung-joon’s closet. Boundaries, dude. He’s here to get the underwear he wore and left here the day he ended up in Sung-joon’s, and I swear I’ll never get tired of Sung-joon crying, “Panty, panty!” in that frustrated tone.

Shin-hyuk asks if he was out on a date, saying that there’s a rumor he’s got a beautiful girlfriend. He wonders how much Sung-joon knows about her — not everything is as it seems. Shin-hyuk admits that there’s something he’d like to tell Sung-joon, but he hasn’t decided if he has the right so for now, he leaves without saying anything. Once he’s out of the apartment his cheerful mood falls, and he seems very conflicted.

Hye=jin catches Ha-ri on the phone with Sung-joon making date plans, and calls out a congratulations for Ha-ri’s new guy to hear. Ha-ri quickly hangs up, and clutches her stomach as if she’s not feeling well.

When Hye-jin gets to work she finds the Most staff frowning at the concept board, unable to decide between two dresses, but they’re interrupted by Chief Editor Kim. She has them quickly pick between two Chinese food dishes on their gut feeling, then has them do the same for the concept. She says that whatever comes out when you’re not thinking, even when your head and heart disagree, is what you really want.

Shin-hyuk helps Hye-jin carry some items to storage when the sole comes off her shoe. He offers her a piggyback which she declines several times, and his pants rip when he crouches down. He tells her to get on his back quick, though I fail to see how that covers up the rip.

On the walk to the storage facility, Shin-hyuk asks if Hye-jin has told Sung-joon the truth yet. She says she was interrupted by him when she tried, but she’s got plans to tell Sung-joon soon. He quietly asks if she’s just looking to reconnect with her old friend, or if she expects something more. Hye-jin hadn’t thought about it that way, but she remembers Chief Editor Kim’s words that what our heart says when we’re not thinking, is the truth.

On his way to a date with Ha-ri, Sung-joon sees Shin-hyuk piggybacking Hye-jin slowly down the street. He’s so busy looking at them that he rear-ends another car, and it makes him miss the movie. Ha-ri makes a big deal about the accident, worried that he could have gotten hurt, and Sung-joon pulls her into a grateful hug. He apologizes for doing things that could worry her, and promises to get his head on straight.

Back in his office Sung-joon goes through his photos from the beach trip, and pauses when he comes to the ones with Hye-jin. She brings him breakfast but he’s short with her, and tells her to take it away. Hye-jin is confused, but gives Sung-joon space. He sees Hye-jin looking at him sadly through his window, and he looks purely miserable — but he shuts the blinds against her anyway.

That night Sung-joon surprises Ha-ri by taking her to a small theater that’s still showing the movie they missed. But he’s distracted during the show, not even responding when Ha-ri locks arms with him. Ha-ri can feel his distance, and after the movie he doesn’t even remember a key scene, and it’s obvious he wasn’t paying attention.

Hye-jin buys the latest edition of Most just to see her name on the credits page, and her family are so proud. In the morning she ends up at the crosswalk near Sung-joon again, and her signature, “Oh, it’s a go!” catches his attention. He runs to her and grabs her wrist, with an unreadable expression on his face.

Oblivious, Hye-jin reminds him of their dinner plans tonight and chirps happily over her name in the magazine, then runs off to work. Sung-joon gets a call just then from Ha-ri, but he’s still frozen and doesn’t answer.

This month’s edition of Most has catapulted them to second place, but Sung-joon is reminded that they need to get to first place with only two months left. Hye-jin sees Sung-joon looking stressed out and asks if he’s okay, but he just ignores her and leaves.

At the cover shoot, the Most staff is going gaga over a James Taylor original dress, but Sung-joon suddenly hollers at them to delete the pictures they’re taking immediately. He’s correct that they can’t risk this design being leaked before the twentieth anniversary edition, but he’s unnecessarily mean about it.

When one girl tries to take the dress to the dressing room, Sung-joon snatches her hand away and yells at her for wearing dangling accessories that could damage the clothing. He kicks her out, and again he’s not wrong, but he makes her cry.

Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin observe Sung-joon’s meltdown, and Shin-hyuk says that today isn’t really a good day to talk to him. She’s given the job of taking the dress to the dressing room and watching over it, but Seul pulls rank and sends her to move her car.

Ha-ri gets stomach pains again at work, and doesn’t notice Shin-hyuk glaring at her in the lobby. He finds her in her office and gets right to the point: “You stop it first.” He admits that this isn’t his place, but he can’t stay silent anymore. He tells Ha-ri that Sung-joon and Hye-jin are meeting tonight and that Hye-jin plans to tell Sung-joon the truth.

He points out that if she’s going to be found out, wouldn’t it be better to tell the truth herself, first? That would cause the three of them the least hurt, and allow them to manage the fallout.

Hye-jin comes back from moving Seul’s car with her hair even fluffier than usual from the rain. She makes her usual “viciously curly hair” joke which Sung-joon overhears, and this time he can’t deny that she’s the one who said it. That, along with the other clues like her “It’s a go!” joke and the way she sheltered him from the rain with her jacket, all fall into place and he stares at her, incredulous.

But as he’s having his epiphany, the model comes out in the James Taylor dress and a snag is discovered. They can’t do the cover shoot with a torn dress, and Sung-joon can’t take any more. He screams out a demand to know who was in charge of the clothing.

Hye-jin comes forward and Sung-joon just gives her this… look. He asks, “You again? Why is it always you?!” In front of everyone he yells that she’s always getting on his nerves, looking like he could burst into tears at any moment. We know that it’s because he finally realizes who she is and that she and Ha-ri have both been lying to him, but she doesn’t, and she’s humiliated.

Hye-jin apologizes for not being careful, but Sung-joon growls at her to get out. He’s going nuts with her always around, and tells her never to show up in front of him again. She’s fired.

After she leaves, another model comes to Sung-joon and tearfully confesses that she tore the dress. Sung-joon wearily lets her go, but Reporter Cha asks what he plans to do about Hye-jin. He doesn’t answer, but sends everyone home.

Ha-ri leaves work in a rush and tries to call Sung-joon, determined to tell him the truth before he hears it from someone else. He sits at the studio in a daze, ignoring her calls. Hye-jin calls Ha-ri to tell her that Sung-joon fired her, so Ha-ri rushes to meet her.

Hye-jin tells her friend that during their trip she and Sung-joon became closer, which made her think he was still the same boy she knew. She was going to open up and tell him everything, but today she learned that to him, she’s just someone he can fire without a thought.

Teary-eyed, Ha-ri lays her head on Hye-jin’s shoulder and says she’s sorry. Hye-jin teases her, thinking she’s crying because she got fired, and says that this is a good thing — she won’t have to keep feeling so conflicted when she sees Sung-joon.

The next morning, the Most team are very vocal about how much Hye-jin is missed — they only now realize how much work she was handling. Even the managerial team, Hye-jin’s original department, wishes they could hire her back for themselves but they don’t have the authority.

Sung-joon is back to his old grouchy self at the next staff meeting, angry that nobody has a good concept for their twentieth anniversary edition. Shin-hyuk finally suggests a movie theme with a twist — focusing on the supporting characters, like the Broadway show “Wicked” did with the wicked witch.

The team take this and run with it, excited about the idea, and Sung-joon starts to roll up his sleeves like he does when he likes something. He suggests they broaden the concept — if you change your point of view, the world looks different. Shine the light on the supporting characters, and the story can completely change.

Later Shin-hyuk brings Sung-joon a notebook full of movie-twist ideas, and Sung-joon realizes this whole concept was Hye-jin’s. Shin-hyuk respectfully suggests that if theyr’e going to use her concept, they ought to bring her back.

Apparently Reporter Cha already asked Hye-jin back and was refused, but Shin-hyuk thinks that if the person who fired her asked, she would return. But Sung-joon balks at apologizing to an intern, and Shin-hyuk notes that Sung-joon seems awfully emotional when it comes to Hye-jin. Almost as if he feels something for her?

He has one more question for Sung-joon: If a different intern made the same mistake, would he have reacted the same way? He insists on an answer when Sung-joon hesitates, and repeats Chief Editor Kim’s words that when your head says one thing and your heart another, that’s when you hesitate.

That hits a nerve, and Sung-joon demands to know why Shin-hyuk is getting so involved in Hye-jin’s life. Shin-hyuk says honestly that it’s because he likes her, and leaves.

Shin-hyuk hangs around Hye-jin’s house, pretending to just be in the neighborhood, and begs her to come back to Most. She declines so he offers to hire her as his personal assistant for a day… but she refuses that too, and he uses his second request to lock her into it.

So she follows him around while he takes pictures, her only job to hold his water bottle, hee. They stop at a flight of stairs and Shin-hyuk tells her she gets a wish if she can hop all the way down the stairs on one leg, so she does it, shrieking her wish to get a job with every hop. Of course Shin-hyuk takes pictures, and dies laughing when she realizes he was teasing her again.

They ride out to the country on his motorcycle and take goofy selcas together, but Shin-hyuk looks at Hye-jin sadly when she’s not paying attention. They go for a walk and Hye-jin admits that Shin-hyuk was right when he asked if she was thinking of reconnecting with Sung-joon as more than a friend.

But she says it’s like there was a one-way mirror between her and Sung-joon, because she could always see him but he never saw her. That’s why this has been so painful for her, but she thanks Shin-hyuk for his help getting through it. He just grins that if she’s so thankful she should go out with him, making her smile.

Sung-joon finally looks through Hye-jin’s concept book, reading one passage she wrote as if from the Little Mermaid’s point of view. She wrote that she only saved the prince because he was in need of help, and she never lied on purpose. He reads further mini-stories from the less-famous fairy tale characters and smiles, enjoying the different point of view.

Hye-jin’s old managerial department supervisor calls to meet with her, and he offers Hye-jin a job at a relative’s company. She happily accepts and heads home, unaware that Sung-joon is trailing behind her carrying her notebook.

He’s so nervous that he jumps like a cat when her phone rings, and ends up hiding in the jungle gym. He’s forced to climb through it to avoid her seeing him, and embarrassingly slides down the slide headfirst to land right at her feet.

He tells her he’d like to use her idea for their anniversary edition and asks her to come back, and she gives him permission to use her concept but turns down the job. Sung-joon admits that he was too sensitive the day he fired her, and went too far. He apologizes quite sincerely and asks her again to come back, but she declines again. Hye-jin says that it’s uncomfortable working with him, but she does thank him for coming to talk to her personally.

The next day, the first thing Sung-joon notices is Hye-jin’s Onion Head on her desk, which has now sprouted. Hye-jin waits to hear about the new job, but when she calls her old manager, he tells her that there’s no job after all. She thinks back on Sung-joon’s offer, but she’s determined not to go back.

She goes to her dad’s print shop to see him but he’s out, so she decides to hide and scare him. But instead she overhears a conversation between Dad and a customer, where Dad’s late on an order because his machine is broken again. The customer says to ask his big-shot daughter with the fancy new job to buy a new machine, and Hye-jin starts to rethink her refusal to go back to Most.

She sneaks out and calls her dad, and he lies and says that everything is going well. Hyejin starts to choke up and ends the call, pretending she’s hard at work. She steels her nerves, berating herself for turning down Sung-joon’s job offer, but before she can call him she gets another call from her old manager. The job offer with his family member is back on the table.

She gets a text from Sung-joon just then with a picture of Onion Head, now with tears drawn on his face, and asking if she’s going to leave him there alone. It’s not hers, which Sung-joon has left untouched, but she doesn’t know that.

The next day the phone rings at Most, and a strange woman answers the phone. But she introduces herself as Kim Hye-jin, and the whole office looks up. It’s Hye-jin, back to work with a brand-new, very Most-like look.

COMMENTS

Well, I’m conflicted about Hye-jin’s makeover. One the one hand, she looks amazing. On the other hand, I didn’t think she looked bad before, just a bit unkempt at times. But the curly hair wasn’t so terrible, other than needing a bit of styling, and her freckles and rosy cheeks were downright endearing. I’m sort of frustrated with her for buying into the whole makeover idea, though I can’t really fault her for it, because people weren’t taking her seriously. She never required them to, and just let them walk all over her, but that’s a different complaint. I suppose I just should wait for her explanation as to why she did this now, since I don’t really understand what motivated her to do it at this point in the story. But… she does look gorgeous.

More than that though, I’m getting really frustrated and I’m ready for people to start talking. Thank goodness Shin-hyuk is an open book or I’d be ready to give up on all of them, because there are so many secrets being kept for no good reason. I don’t mind when a character holds back information for a valid purpose, like that the truth would put someone in danger. But just keeping vital information to themselves for no reason other than that it’s awkward (or let’s be honest, to prolong the story) is frustrating. It’s downright infuriating that Ha-ri was ready to tell Sung-joon the truth until she found out about his and Hye-jin’s falling out. Just when I thought she was going to do the right thing, she got an excuse to keep doing the wrong thing and ran with it. I used to really love her character, but now, I’m just glad that Sung-joon’s figured out the truth, because it’s clear that she was never going to tell him on her own.

On the other hand, my favorite thing about Shin-hyuk is his to-a-fault honesty — if he has something to say, he says it, and if he has a question about something bothering him, he asks. He may be a jokester, but he doesn’t mess with a person’s feelings. I liked that it was Shin-hyuk who confronted Ha-ri, and he did it so gently. He did it mostly because he doesn’t want to see Hye-jin hurt, but he’s also compassionate to Ha-ri’s feelings, and gave her a chance to end this in a mature, adult way. And I love that he’s willing to help Sung-joon and Hye-jin mend their friendship, even though it means he’ll probably lose her. He’s really the most mature, honest character in the show, despite his initial goofball impression.

I’ve been frustrated with Sung-joon for some time now, because you know he felt something wasn’t right with Ha-ri. He’s known something about her was off for a long time. When she told him she didn’t want to talk about the past anymore, that should have been a huge red flag, because someone you knew as a child wouldn’t just say, “Let’s never mention our childhood friendship ever again,” for no reason. I would find that extremely strange at best, a giant flashing neon SOMETHING IS WRONG ABOUT THIS PERSON sign at worst. And yet Sung-joon didn’t even question it, and just went along with her. At this point he’s actively sabotaging himself, because that should have caused him to start asking questions about her again like he did before. Even his own therapist warned him against this, but he’s just going against good advice and his own instincts. Being tricked and lied to unknowingly is one thing, and I’m sympathetic to him on that front, but willful ignorance in the face of some pretty glaring inconsistencies is another thing entirely. All for the sake of a memory.

On the other hand, he’s under a tremendous amount of stress, which would be hard for anyone. But we know that Sung-joon isn’t eating properly on top of facing responsibility for how many hundreds of jobs among the Most staff, not to mention his own. It’s not the time to be thinking about dating at all, much less when you suspect that the woman you’re dating may not be the person she claims to be, literally. But at least he finally figured the truth out on his own and didn’t need someone else to tell him, and I’m glad the story let him put the clues together himself. He’s too smart of a man not to know, in the face of so much evidence. So I’m torn between being very frustrated with him, and sympathizing that he’s trying to do the best he can under the weight of so much professional pressure. I don’t even blame him for firing Hye-jin, because allowing a one-of-a-kind designer dress to become ruined is something worth losing your job for, in their precarious situation. But Sung-joon reacted emotionally, and fired her in the most humiliating way possible, and Hye-jin didn’t deserve that.

I just hope that this new, repentant and apologetic Sung-joon sticks around, because now that he knows, he needs to show Hye-jin how very sorry he is. In this sense I wouldn’t mind if he kept it to himself that he knows she’s hisHye-jin, because it would be nice to see him make it up to her without her thinking he’s only doing it because she knows who he is. She deserves to be treated well for who she is, and not for who she was — so I do hope Sung-joon keeps this to himself until she forgives him.

I don't understand the reactions... what's so bad morally about wanting a makeover for yourself, whether it's for a personal or professional reason?

yes, you shouldn't care solely for physical appearance, but it's not a bad thing if you care about it either. we all know that HJ is more than just a pretty face. and we all know her non-pretty face is putting a dent on her self-esteem, and on pple's view of her in society, and especially in the fashion industry. so why not change it, when we know full well from her childhood that she's perfectly capable of grooming herself if she put her mind to it.

if this was 20A, it would be interpreted as present HJ finding her past HJ back again, you know, the one who took care of herself, who wasn't a slob with her appearance, like 99% of people from the population, and could still be pretty and a good person at the same time. there is a difference between "money is not everything" with "i'll give up all the money I have and stop making an effort to make any money at all"
if she decides to make the best of what she has instead of settling for doing nothing, especially when her current appearance is not something that gives her any confidence at all and is the impetus for her major freak out when she first met SJ, i say good for her.

Well said, I like for the fact that she had a makeover NOT to impress a guy. She did it for herself, for her own self improvement. And I don't see nothing wrong with it.

I'm gonna miss that cute rash on her cheek, it's so adorable! I always envy people who have reddish cheeks and freckles around the nose area, they don't need blusher or any superficial make up to create an "innocent" look. Plus from my experience, anyone with naturally reddish and freckled cheeks is usually a warm person.
I really hope that they will let her go back to her natural look sometime later after the hype of the makeover is over (I know that it is crucial for plot development, and bla bla bla), like what they did in Fated to Love You where Kim Mi Young wears her glasses again eventhough she has already got that transformed look downpat (besides, what's wrong with wearing glasses, really? They don't uglify anyone, they function to improve eyesight and the right eyeglass frames could even make you more attractive!). And it bothers me more that the drama is kind of expecting everyone to look like they walk straight out of magazine, even when the character is inside her house sipping coffee in front of TV while getting lovey dovey with her partner (see pre-released trailer of She Was Pretty). Oh right I forgot, this is the reason why I got hooked up with K dramas in the first place, because everyone will look ridiculously pretty in the end no matter what!
Such. Conflicting. Emotion. Le sigh.

1. I WANT SHIN-HYUK TO BE MY BOYFRIEND. I absolutely love him. Seriously - I haven't seen a second lead be this awesome in a long time. And he's absolutely hilarious!

2. I don't think he actually knows yet. I think he's very suspicious and confused, but I didn't get the impression that he knows. I hope not at least, because I want a better reveal than that. My money is still on him figuring out through the younger sister. I mean, come on...you can't hire the girl to play the younger sister for no reason!

3. I actually like the makeover, and I interpreted it as her doing it for her father because she realized how much the job means for her family.

Totally in love with this drama. Can't wait to see more of it!!!!!

I get the why of the makeover, but I don't get the how. In story, I mean. If she always could have looked like this, why didn't she? We all think she looked darling before, but she didn't think so. And when she tried to look more Most like before, putting product in her chair and doing her face, this was not the result. So how did she do it this time????

sj doesn't know that hj is his hj yet. and tbh, i don't blame him bc the whole scenario is too far-fetched.
in his eyes, hr is hj bc she showed up as hj, she knows about him, and she has the puzzle.
hj isn't his hj bc she doesn't recognise him, doesn't admit to it, and there's another "real" hj around.

sure, he picked up the clues, but it would still be a big leap to come to the conclusion that the two girls, whom, as far as he is concerned, are not connected, went on a full-scale impersonating scheme [for no evident reasons] to deceive him.

I found her adorable before the makeover especially her cheeks but I dont have a problem with the makeover because she just straightened her hair which she always did when she was younger thats about it and maybe got some little makeup to cover her cheeks. she was never unpretty she just didnt bother with her being busy. the makeover was kind of needed especially with her working in a fashion company.

I just hope she knows she is pretty thats where the problem is

About the transformation, I think she feels the need to step up as she realizes that her dad's business is not going as well as she thought and her parents have great hope for her working in a top magazine. She wants to help with the family and thus needs to be taken seriously through looking professional.

I another theory that could be combined with yours is: When she found out that the job that her other manager had set up for her fell through, and she thought going back to Most mag, she kept saying, "No, I have my pride". I think when she was sent the picture of the crying onion, and she decided to go back, I think the transformation helped her to keep her pride intact. It was a statement saying that she wasn't going to be walked on any more (at least I hope that will be her new attitude). I'm not sure Seol would have walked all over her if she began working there looking like she did post transformation. Sorry to say, but how you dress DOES make a difference on how people view you and how they treat you.

I do agree with you Noona, and do believe her dad was the spark for the change. She's working for a top magazine. And just as Hari pointed out that she needs to learn the lingo, (when Hari was a true friend), She also needs to look the part.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the curly hair and rosy cheeks, But her wardrobe needed to be changed though for that particular department. There was a time in her life where straightening her hair mattered to her. Nothing wrong with going back to that. Also for those wondering were she got the money, remember that Shin Hyuk paid her well for being his "assistant" for the day.

I reaally hope this makeover is some sort of dream or fantasy to mislead us because even tho some people at Most wont tell it to her face, they appreciate hye jin as hye jin even when she didnt look "Most"... This whole makeover thing is so out of the blue... i dont really c hye jin running off to buy clothes and makeup when she just discovered her father is in trouble With customers... Idk why ppl are surprised at Hari's behavior.. shes been postponing to tell the truth for so long.. first it was tomorrow and niw its "only 2 months" yeah rightt...
truth is im getting tired of this... im glad sung joon knows but i dont want them to ruin the story fast forwarding the actual "getting to know each other" phase at last minute cuz they wasted time with the secrets...

Since I'm into Kdrama purely for entertainment, I overlook minor plot inconsistencies, miracle overnight makeovers, huge elephants in the room, etc., and try not to look for life lessons. But, if there's one thing this show has taught me, it's that the sexiest men on the planet are the ones that make me laugh out loud. Go Shin-huyk!

Nope, Sung Joon doesn't know the real Hye Jin yet, at least on ep 8.
I pity Sung Joon, he struggle a lot, he felt guilt for Ha Ri (whom he think she is his Hye Jin) for not being able to accept her feelings to be her boyfriend, since strangely he found no connection with her, but with his "intern" Hye Jin instead. When he saw Shin Hyuk piggybacked Hye Jin, somehow he's mad, mad to himself for keep falling for Hye Jin. So he's kinda make a promise to himself as well for Ha Ri that he won't make her worry again ( will fall for Hye Jin no more). But, it's getting worse when he found Hye Jin had so much similiarity with her Hye Jin (it's a go thing, wild curly hair). He got frustated and make the dress issue is too much for him to take, so then he explodes.
It's Ha Ri's fault, since Hye Jin had no clue if he's struggle, she doesn't know both of them still keep seing each other. Still hates Ha Ri in this episode (ep 8) since all her action is only for herself. However, I like this episode a lot, since it's shows us how Sung Joon found out about his feelings and how he reacted, it shows us how Shin Hyuk helps Sung Joon realizing his feeling towards Hye Jin. Am really excited for ep 9, oh Wednesday, please come early.. >"<

Ummm... I'm pretty sure he hasn't fully found out yet. Because if he was convinced Hari was not the real Hye Jin why would he call her back? Also, he probably wouldn't just gloss over the fact that he was tricked he would confront either Hari or Hye jin about it.

I agree with some of you guys. I don't think he has fully realized it yet. That puzzle is really significant to him, and for Hari to have the missing piece......well.....Plus, if he did figure it out, I think he would have confronted HJ on the playground.

Anyways I keep telling myself that we are only HALFWAY thru! So I can't begin to imagine what other angst the writers have in store for us to keep our OTP from being together. (not looking forward to it. I just want more cute cute cute!).
BUT, this is what I DON'T want to see happening: For Sung Joon to continue to date HaRi even after finding out the truth because of what ever stupid reason.
And at first I was okay if HJ ended up with Shin Hyuk, but I would prefer for them to keep their brother - sister relationship more. #TeamUmbrella!!!

Money. Her family was well off before. The family circumstances changed. That was the reason she lost contact with Sun-joog and all of his letters were returned. The reason she wasn't paying rent to Ha-to, and probably why she didn't dress as well before and didn't go to the salon to get her hair straightened like before.

hye jin gonna make her ULTIMATE SACRIFICE for hari to give up on her lover for hari when she seal it with the words " I WILL BE ROOTING FOR YOUR LOVE, I WILL SINCERE CHEER ON YOUR LOVE HA-RI", how can we judge hyejin is make aNOBLE IDIOCY, can we imagine how much love hyejin love for hari??, she love hari more than a BFF, far more than a sister but already like a mother to hari,
i can predict SJ gonna find the truth by himself because when hyejin know the truth she will be silence for the sake of hari

Thanks Lolypip! This is one I was waiting for. Have I said that before? Lol.

Did SJ really figure things out though? He noticed somethings but I'm not convinced he really knows nor has come close to accepting the possible.

On another note...the MAKEOVER! Gah! She looks amazing! I was one of those people who were fine with her look and I would've been content if she stayed the same throughout because she was beautiful anyway. However, I don't how to argue with what we saw. I'm just curious (like several of us) about how it happened. Who did it? What made her do it? I want answers next week!

Ep7 was so cute and sweet but SJ just had a 180 degree change in tge next ep to become his old self in ep2 WTH? Did the accident did something to his head?

> I love SH's characters here. We don't know yet who he is but he's portrayed as the most honest person...assertive yet friendly. He's kind of rare gem, a good husband candidate.

> SJ drew a sketch of HR and himself on the wall with a SPACE between, not like his childhood sketch of himself and HJ. I think this speaks a lot.

> I like HJ's pictures on SJ's camera (with curly hair and natural looks). She needs a proper wardrobe (2015 style and not 80's) only...

> After the makeover, okay, she's gorgeous, but that smile's bit too confident as if she really knew now who she is. But, let's wait for episod 9 then so that we know what the hell is going on there with that drastic change (maybe except the jeans and the bag). I need lots of explanation...

Thanks @ LollyPip!

I do like this show and I want to see how far it can take us with just this simple story and little plot, ... and preferably, ... how the show can do it without frustrating us! LOL.

I'm a little conflicted about Hye Jin. She's our heroine and I want to root for her without reservation, but it's not just once or twice, but several times, she make decisions which embarrass mostly herself but the organization too. She is smart and yet she does not read the signs of Ha Ri's unhappiness or how there were times Ha Ri wanted to say more, or when Shin Hyuk is being serious. I sigh. I guess, I'd like my heroine to be a bit more perceptive, intuitive, to be more observant and not so caricature like in her responses and reactions. I cringed at her yelling her greetings to Ha Ri so that Sung Joon could hear her over the phone, and how she kept up the endless teasing regardless of Ha Ri's expression. She made it easy for Ha Ri to say nothing, since she barely paused in the noise she made. Or perhaps she thought she was easing her friend's embarrassment.

I trust it will not be another 8 episodes of noble idiocy and hiding one's sadness between the 2 girls. I'd like for a chance for more bromance and for Sung Joon to be less lonely. And since she appeared at least twice so far in Hye Jin's life, I'd like to see her little sister appear to befriend Sung Joon more and to be the one to out the true identity of Hye Jin to him. (Yes, I do not believe he knows it yet). That would be an added twist and maybe interesting? :)

1) When Hari made that "Two Months" comment I had forgotten about the Magazine's deadline and I was like "Oh, great... she must be dying." Then her stomach pains throughout the episode sealed it for me. Now that I remember than Sung-joon may be leaving a two months, I'm relieved. Because who needs a Cancer scare on top of all the rest of this drama? I wonder what all the stomach clutching signifies, though.

2) Sung Joon is a terrible person. I'm sorry. Don't care how sweet he is when he feels like it. You can't go around treating people like crap whenever you're feeling conflicted or stressed and then, once you're feeling better, be all like "Oh, let me pretend that I think you're worth my time" again. That's not how it works... that's not how ANY of this works! I have no patience with him. Obviously, what we're seeing is a pattern of behavior and him apologizing today is not going to stop him from turning around and doing the same thing tomorrow.

3) They better have a VERY good explanation for this makeover. And, considering they haven't even explained how she ended up in such a bedraggled state to begin with, I don't have much hope. It's so unnecessary... especially since they have been subtly "prettifying" her character over the past few weeks with much less jarring results. And just when her absence had taught her co-workers to respect her the way she was regardless of her looks. I'm so disappointed in this move.

4) I LOVE Shin-Hyuk. Yes, just go to people and tell them what's up instead of all of these secrets. I do wish he hadn't told Hari to tell the truth first because that actually makes Hye-jin look like the more deceitful one so Sung-joon would probably be even more upset with her. Not that I think that was Shin-Hyuk's plan.

5) I don't think Sung-joon figured it out. I just think he's growing more confused and, by extension, frustrated by the way the Hye-jin keeps intersecting with "His" Hye-jin. He's close, very close, but it would be almost impossible for him to put the last piece together without knowing that Hye-jin and Hari are connected.

I'm pretty sure that the stomach clutching is just from her feeling really guilty about everything that she's doing. I know that sometimes when I feel like there is something I really should or shouldn't be doing, it makes me so uncomfortable, almost to the point that I feel ill.

I enjoyed ep7 when SJ was getting to know HJ better and started to look pass the fact she has the same name as his first love. Then he has to throw all that away in ep8 WHY?
Shouldn't the car accident shed some light on himself that he obviously cares about HJ.

I am shipping for Shin Hyuk and Hye Jin (although I know that will never happen) at least he is open about him liking Hye Jin to Hye Jin and to Sung Joon. Shin Hyuk is the man!

Is it just me? I didn't notice that I was already crying when Hye Jin realized that "She's just someone that he can fire without a thought." Imagine you were just in cloud nine during the business trip. She has decided to tell the truth believing he would accept her. And that very moment, she's got nothing. No work, no money, no first love/old friend reunion and NO self-esteem! My heart breaks when she didn't even have rice to cook and her dad is also having a hard time.
I don't mind if it is too weak for a plot. But who cares? I am getting roller coaster of emotions. I was crying another minute and laughing out loud the next because of Shin-Hyuk. Let's just trust the writers. Hope that they will not dissappoint us. Excited for next week's episode.

I am just wondering how did the makeover happened, who initiated it? I think base on the latest BTS , most of the new scenes were not in the MOST Office, is it...HJ will work no more in MOST, and the last scene in EP 8- where she answered the phone call accidentally - is a scene where she visited the MOST office to do a business transaction with the magazine for her new company, and she was sent there by her new employer ...somebody is whispering at my back...is it JAMES TAYLOR...the very popular stylist???

Sung Joon DEFINITELY does not know yet that she's the real Hye Jin because why would he call back Ha Ri after he missed some of her calls, only for Ha Ri to turn off her phone because she was beside Hye Jin "comforting" her after losing the job at The MOST?

(Although really, it was more of Ha Ri crying guiltily on Hye Jin's shoulders because of the mess she started.)

While I'm all for Sung Joon knowing it already, I'm expecting a more dramatic turn of events after knowing the deception, instead of just him brooding in the studio, or looking at Hye Jin's onion over and over again.

And this show better have a good reason for giving Hye Jin a makeover because it was just not necessary at all!!!

I agree with earlier comments on Sung Joon -- at this point I have no idea why both girls even like him, (or at least why Hye Jin is interested in him because I don't think she likes him as much as his interest in her).

And I thought Ha Ri would be different from other second leads, but now I think she's even more annoying because she's deliberately lying to her best friend. Reporter Cha is definitely the most interesting character so far.

I don't think that Seung Joon has realized that Hye Jin is the real Hye Jin from his childhood and that the one playing Hye Jin has been lying to him.
I think he is confused between the 2 now though. The puzzle piece that the fake Hye Jin brought to him should mean she is his childhood love but the actions of the real Hye Jin is more like his childhood love's.
Can't he be more decisive and ask Hye Jin about her childhood?
Or ask Ha Ri to be honest and tell him who she is?

As far as Hye Jin knows, the only lie she told Seung Joon is that she is currently abroad studying or working in London. Oh and that her best friend is Hye Jin, but she didn't actually get Ha Ri to interact with him anymore after the first meeting.
So the only people who can sort things out is Seung Joon, Ha Ri and Shin Hyuk since he knows everything now.

i always wondered in those Kdrama's and also on shows like "get it beauty".

Korean women spend soooo much money on montly meetings with dermatologists, skincare and makeup and brand bags and shoes.

How can they afford it? Do they actually live on credit just to look good, if that is the case i'm so afraid for them and their (financial) future. Surely having your own house or car is better than having a Hermes bag on your arm?Or do they get taken more serious and offered more opportunities if the "look rich"?

I noticed some girl said that in her job interview once in "chamdeong beauty", that they only started to give her more point in job evaluations after she wore the brand design clothes and bags (which she payed for by taking another loan and postponing college, yikes..)

I went 'meh' on HJ's makeover shot. She could probably dress and groom herself better, but I really like her curly hair. It fits her personality of being bubbly and quirky. It gives her character and individuality in an office full of shiny straightened hair.

I think I'm still watching this just for SH. I just want to find out the mystery behind his story. I hope the male lead and second lead roles get reversed, SH gets a happy ending and HJ chooses him over SJ, since this is probably Siwon's last drama before his military service. He will be gone for two years, so they better make him the lead in this! :)

Ha ri is bad news, the type that never know how low they can sink. Since they have no morals. In essence: she never really was a good person. Or a good friend. It just took this Sung Joon affair for her to be found out by us and hopefully, soon by Hye Jin and Sung Joon.

At this point, both Ha Ri and Hye Jin are going to catch hell for lying. Just think of Sung Joon's reaction when he finds out that his best friend has been with him all this time pretending to be a stranger. He's been confiding in her, revealing personal things about himself that she already knows while she plays dumb. And the icing on the cake is when he finds out about Ha Ri's charade; he's going to be floored when he finds out that Hye Jin was the one who set the charade in motion. His treatment of Hye Jin and The Most staff has been foul and he deserves to be called out for that, but what Hye Jin is doing is on a whole new level of wrong. I think he might be done with both women when he finds out and will be in much need of that bromance with Shin Hyuk.

Exactly. He's going to have that Coffee Prince period where he's sick at the sight of Hye Jin. I doubt he'll have much sympathy for Hye Jin feeling betrayed by Ha Ri. Hye Jin is insulting him and their friendship with her actions. She's probably the only friend he has in the world and knowing that she still decided to go on with this charade at a time when he needs her the most.

In the 1st episode they've talked right, SungJoon & HyeJin? How come SungJoon can't recognized who's voice really is it and the number should have been different.

if that friendship crumbles I'm going to be super happy, I don't think HaRi actually think HyeJin is her friend. I mean everything is always going in her favor, HyeJin's family loves her, heck even HyeJin's lil sis would want her to replace HyeJin and boys are lining up to get her attention. (I just hate her character, she should've been grateful)

I hope with HyeJin's makeover SungJoon will now think twice of who actually his childhood friend is and make his mind and heart go crazy.

Good recap... But i don't believe sung joon figured it out lol. If he did don't you think he'd confront them over it? He doesn't even show any angst about it when we know hye-jin is number one in his life. He even apologizes without asking her about it. If he had asked her back by revealing that he knows about her being the real hye-jin then she would come back since things wouldn't be uncomfortable anymore, so i don't see why he wouldn't reveal such knowledge except that he still doesn't know for sure.

Also lol that piggyback scene? That was a late insert wasn't it? Because hwang jung eum was clearly wearing a wig and her makeup was different.

@islander, wow, what so bad about it? Too much, she's the lowest:
1. Fall in love with your BF's crush/first love is already breaks the girl ethic code
2. Used best friend identity without permission
3. Taking advantage from it, stole their memories
4. Stealing your BF puzzle which she cherish (stealing things is already bad enough not to mention it's your BF's )
5. Kissing your BF's crush/first love
6. Calling herself her Best Friend but doing all of that behind Hye Jin's back. Helloo.. If she accidentally falls for him she need to be at least being honest with Hye Jin and use her real identity to chase him. Even a good friend will never do such thing like Ha Ri did.
7. Hye Jin ask Ha Ri only for one time purpose, she should have told her from the beginning.
8. Hye Jin told her manytimes that Sung Joon is so harsh with her, mistreat her, but she doesn't seem care about it, as long as Sung Joon treat her nicely that's ok
9. Hye Jin's fam is like Ha Ri's second fam, but what? She easily throw it all for a man who doesn't even know her name.

I can keep going but I think that's enough to show what a crap BF she is. And no, I don't pity her at all, every ppl have their own issue but that don't give them the right to be that kind of bitch. How ungrateful she is.

Idk why everybody has this expectation to sung joon to be a perfect man of all, sung joon is a good man, he is a shitty boss that can;t take stress much, but then when I try to have a thought about it, it complete him, as charcther flaw and room for improvement,

sung joon close himself for people interaction so he never had this heart><brain conflict before, and when he is in Korea and meet Hye Jin and witness the feeling he has for the real Hye Jin, he confuses about the way he feels, it's a first time, let him learn to be a better boss and understand about personal life and work related, he never talked about work with Hari because he thinks he did a good job separating it but his heart tell otherwise.

and I think people just loved shin hyuk because he is overall nice when I loved sung joon-hye jin moment cause they are compatible, have interaction and giving each other comfort when shin hyuk kinda being a nice person and hye jin doesn't react much to him or making the initiation in their relationship.

Thoughts:
1-SJ does not know who hyejin really is.
2-I am guessing/hoping Hari helped and was the instigator for the makeover, to help hyejin have confidence that she is a valuable addition at most and worthy to show up in front of anyone including first loves loves who recently berated her in front of everyone. Hyejin was those things before the makeover, but I don't think she believed it. It's definitely feels different going somewhere knowing you look great, rather than thinking you don't look good and going there anyway. I think Hari has to have helped--where else does the money come from for it? Hyejin couldn't buy rice in the last ep. It is also a way to get a little redemption for Hari's character. She realizes how much she's hurt hyejin, decides to give him up, and does the makeover to start to pave the way for hyejin and SJ too get a fresh perspective on each other, for sungjoon to see hyejin as someone other than a bumbling screw-up (even though he already does and is fighting his feelings for her), and for hyejin to see sungjoon as an equal (not literally-since he's still the boss) that she can speak and act confidently in front of.

First I must clap for the acting the actors and actresses here, especially Park seo joon, he portrays Sung joons Character really well. “Why are you making Nervous always” he was about to burst with tears.

I am not blaming Sung Joon here, he is Pitiful, and He doesn’t know who is real Hye jin, He is confused, and stressed , dress damage was nothing to him he all wanted to remove Hye Jin because she always resembles his Hye jin , and Hye jin that he knows is not like Hye jin. So he is going crazy.(Crazy joon)

Ok sung Joon Just eat well and try to connect the dots. You can find real hye Jin.

Any way Most of the people blaming sung Joon not being a smart man, unable to recognize real Hye Jin, but Sung Joon was not Smart from his Childhood, It Was Hye Jin. He hides his weak points by his anger. and the Puzzle peace caused him to believe fake Hye jin.

Waiting for next episode, I saw Shin Hyuk bleeding in BTS, May be an accident happen to him and Hye Jin might closer to him. Dunno, eagerly waiting.

All over this is just a drama.

SJ has figured out that HJ is THE HJ ? really? so what is he gonna do about Ha Ri? is he gg to string HR along while pondering what to do about the "HJ - I know who you are but I dunno why you would want to hide your true identity and send this imposter right into my arms? " issue? it's getting rather irritating and esp as I felt that HJ lying to SJ about her identity really had no basis since she was not really a girl with low self esteem over her looks. She is portrayed as happy and bright with confidence in her abilities and know she simply needs a shot to display her talents at a decent job. if and when she can get a chance at such a job. I would also be pretty mad if I were sj. HR and HJ seem to be passing him around like a ball? seems like SH is the only sane one around trying to untangle the whole mess :P

ok I have to agree that PSJ is killing it with his portrayal of SJ and how he gets jumpy around HJ becoz everything she says and does reminds him eerily of the HJ he used to know from when he was a telly tubby. Poor fella. he looks on the verge of a nervous breakdown from all the stress of the job and trying to figure out which HJ is telling the truth, not to mention HS stalking him around in his apartment and stealing his underwear! Actually all the 4 leads are dd a good job. it reminds me of the earlier Drama this year - "High society" - where the OTP were so stiff and acted so weirdly . Altho I loved Park Hyun Sik's acting in HS. whereas the actors in She was pretty are dd a very good job with their range of emtions and acting. love this drama for the pretty and young actors' heartfelt acting!

can I just add that HS and HJ seem to have an oppa and dongseng relationship? I cannot see them together. whereas SJ and HJ really make the screen sizzle with their discomfort and chemistry. Choi Si Won brings along with him the air of a veteran actor who knows and see much more than he lets on. And although he is wacky as ever here, somehow, I don't find him as believeable a character as the other 3 leads! sorry, you are hot and gorgeous CSW but you are really more suited to be an idol :)

Their onscreen chemistry really works plus though their scenes are not yet romantic, their characters are naturally drawn together. You'd like Shin hyook for Hyejin just because he fights for her and has a nerve to face Sungjoon and make him realize what's going on inside him.

Shin Hyook and Hye jin really has a lot of potential! And as the story continues, this is the first time that I would really like the second guy to be the leading lady's man! :D *change of plot please...
