EPISODE 11 RECAP
Sung-joon calls Ha-ri to meet up as planned, and she tells him she’s working and she’ll see him later. But it’s too late, as he’s already there, and he sees her photo on a plaque with her real name.
He confronts her, and calls her by name, “Min Ha-ri. Who are you?” Looking heartbroken, he asks her why she pretended to be Kim Hye-jin. He shakes off her hand when she tries to touch him, so she just ekes out a tiny, “I’m Hye-jin’s friend.”
She explains that she was only supposed to meet him that once, but things got complicated when he bumped into her at the hotel. She was going to tell him the truth today… but he’s not interested. What he wants to know is, is the real Kim Hye-jin who he thinks it is?
Ha-ri confirms that he knows the real Hye-jin and tries again to explain, but Sung-joon is done with her. He walks away without a second thought, leaving Ha-ri crying.
All of the clues seem so obvious now, as Sung-joon thinks about things he’s heard and seen of the real Hye-jin. The past and the present meld together, and he realizes that the woman he’s been looking for has been right beside him all this time.
Meanwhile Shin-hyuk uses his final request of Hye-jin, and hugs her tightly. He begs her, if she can’t go to Sung-joon, then to please come to him. He just wants a chance, but Hye-jin gets a call from Sung-joon before she can answer him.
Sung-joon’s voice catches as she answers, and he says formally, “It’s been a long time, Kim Hye-jin.” He says it again in banmal, and starts to cry as he says he’s missed her. He asks her to meet him, now, and Shin-hyuk tries one last time and asks her with a sad smile not to go. Okay, they’re both breaking my heart!
Hye-jin just tells Shin-hyuk sincerely that she’s sorry, and runs. She and Sung-joon triangulate to find each other, and he sees her first and pulls her around by the arm. Oh, the expressions on their faces — so beautiful. Sung-joon starts to cry again, breathing, “I’ve finally found you, Kim Hye-jin,” and she joins him in tears.
He starts to bark at her, demanding to know why she didn’t tell him, didn’t she know how much he missed her? But he stops himself — it’s not important. He’s only sorry he’s so late in recognizing her, and she just smiles at him. He takes her face in his hands and examines her closely, and finally, finally recognizes his old friend.
They stand for a long time, just taking each other in, and for a moment they feel like their young selves as they join hands and walk together. He hear Hye-jin tell Sung-joon that she did go to meet him that day, but when he walked past her, she lost her confidence. He regrets that his mistake started all this, but they’re both so happy now, it hardly seems to matter anymore.
They ride on a riverboat and Sung-joon wonders how it must have been for her, knowing who he was and not being able to speak up. She admits that the small lie snowballed and got out of control. Sung-joon wonders if their situations had been reversed and he were the more unfortunate one, would she have been disappointed meeting him? He thought that kind of thing wouldn’t be important between them.
He turns serious and takes Hye-jin by the shoulders, and tells her that no matter what her circumstances or how she looked, it wouldn’t have mattered to him. Hye-jin regrets hiding now, but Sung-joon tells her that they’ll not regret anymore, and just look at the present.
She asks if he heard all this from Ha-ri, but he says he’s hearing it for the first time now. She’s shocked he didn’t talk to Ha-ri and runs home early, worried that Ha-ri isn’t okay. Ha-ri makes light of it, saying that she lost her head for a while and should have told Hye-jin sooner.
Hye-jin isn’t ready to accept her apology, reminding Ha-ri that she promised to tell Sung-joon the truth and set things right. Ha-ri says that it just happened before she got the chance, and runs out, claiming to have a date.
Left blinking in surprise, Hye-jin answers Hari’s phone where she left it in her room. She sees a ripped-up latter in Ha-ri’s trash can and puts it together, reading how Ha-ri was going to confess to Sung-joon, and everything he made her feel. Realizing that Sung-joon meant more to her friend than Ha-ri let on, Hye-jin goes looking for her.
She finds Ha-ri crying like her heart is breaking, and she watches for a while with tears in her own eyes. We hear the end of Ha-ri’s letter, where she’d apologized and said she’ll be sincerely cheering for him and Hye-jin, as Ha-ri sobs.
The next morning, things are a little awkward as Ha-ri lies about her “date” last night. But Sung-joon is excited to see Hye-jin again, and smiles at his own version of Onion Head at his place. Shin-hyuk can barely bring himself to get out of bed, poor guy.
Hye-jin takes advantage of Sung-joon’s absorption in his tablet at the street light to look her fill at him, then cutely gets a little annoyed that he doesn’t see her there. But when she does get his attention, his happy smile is just glorious.
He tries to take her hand to cross the street, but she whips it away, claiming to be stretching. He invites her to go to their old neighborhood for dinner tonight and to see their old haunts, but for some reason, she claims not to remember buying him that cake for Left-Hander’s Day.
In the elevator Hye-jin asks what she should call him now and natters on about his life in America, but he’s sort of over her antics. He doesn’t let her leave the elevator and hits the button for the top floor, and takes her to the roof to talk.
He’s hurt that she’s pretending to have only connected with an old friend and nothing more, but she says they should keep their personal and professional lives separate. He asks if that’s all he is to her, an old classmate, and his voice catches when he brings up the way they were last night, which felt to him like more.
Hye-jin thinks to herself Ha-ri likes you, but she just says that that “first love” stuff is so old-fashioned. Sung-joon doesn’t hide his disappointment, mentioning how much he’s been hoping all this time that it was more between them. He asks why she’s being like this, but she just says he’s too serious. Sung-joon says sadly that he guesses he was alone in thinking this was something special, but he must have been the only one who didn’t want to waste more time. He gets her point and leaves, and she sighs to herself sadly.
Hye-jin runs into Shin-hyuk on her way to the office, and gives him some money to repay him for his hospital bill. He pastes on his smile, which just looks weary now, and tells her not to bother.
Poong-ho notices the strange atmosphere, and asks Hye-jin what’s up between her and Shin-hyuk. Sung-joon overhears her loudly deny anything, and leaves the office in a huff.
Seul overhears Joon-woo talking to his father on the phone and calling him “president,” figuring it’s proof that she’s landed the true hidden chaebol. But she’s disappointed when he tells her his father was appointed president of his soccer club, and that he owns a dry cleaning business. At least it’s in Gangnam?
Meanwhile Shin-hyuk is driven somewhere in a fancy car with a driver, and tells the nicely-dressed older man in the car with him that he doesn’t need to bother calling him later. Iiinteresting.
In his office, Sung-joon remembers Shin-hyuk’s confession that he likes Hye-jin, and when Hye-jin delivers the meeting minutes he tells her that she doesn’t need to bring them to him personally anymore. He’s all business as he dismisses her, but he can’t keep it up. When she turns to go, he says breathlessly, “I can’t do it, Hye-jin-ah.”
He says to her back that he can’t just be her classmate, or keep their business and personal lives separate. He can’t, and he doesn’t want to. Reporter Cha interrupts them before Hye-jin can answer him, and he’s left hanging. Back at her desk, Hye-jin turns her Onion Head around to the crying side, which Sung-joon notices.
Shin-hyuk conducts his interview with a director, who asks him when he got so boring. He only agreed to this interview because Shin-hyuk is fun, but he was boring today. Shin-hyuk perks up and makes an effort, though it really seems like an effort now.
Afterward, he makes a call (in English, interestingly) promising to see someone soon, saying that he misses them. He wonders to himself if it’s time to leave.
Hye-jin arrives home that night in time to catch Ha-ri going out with a new man, whose name she doesn’t even know. Hye-jin is frustrated, but Ha-ri says it’s not like she doesn’t know her, so Hye-jin yanks her inside to talk.
She yells at Ha-ri, telling her to act upset if she’s upset, and not to pretend she’s fine. She tells Ha-ri that she saw her crying, but Ha-ri says that the one of them who’s truly pretending to be fine is Hye-jin. She yells that Hye-jin should be mad at her, and finally Hye-jin screams that yes, she’s very angry.
But it’s not because of Sung-joon. She holds herself responsible for this situation, but it’s Ha-ri’s attitude that infuriates her. She tells Ha-ri to stop avoiding her, but Ha-ri says that this is all she can do. She says that maybe it’s time they stop all this, and offers to disappear.
But Hye-jin is the one who’s been living at Ha-ri’s place, so she argues that she should go. She starts to pack right away, but Ha-ri just leaves without argument. So Hye-jin goes to her parents’ home for the night, annoyed when everyone asks after Ha-ri.
Sung-joon tries calling Hye-jin (who’s saved in his phone as “My Umbrella,” awww), but Hye-rin answers her phone. He finds out where her parents live and shows up there, and they all remember him from when he lived next door and fawn over the handsome man he’s grown into.
He makes no bones about the fact that he wants to date Hye-jin, which excites everyone but Hye-jin herself. Despite being such a lightweight, Sung-joon drinks Dad’s homemade wine when it’s offered, and immediately passes out on the table. HAHAHA.
Ha-ri’s night isn’t much better, as she comes home from her date to find her mother waiting to see her. Her mother asks her to forgive her, and both women cry wordlessly.
Hye-jin can’t sleep knowing that Sung-joon is in the house, and hee, both of her parents are watching him sleep and wondering about his feelings for their daughter. They happily go when Hye-jin shoos them back to their room, telling her to have a nice time. OMG, they’re so cute.
Hye-jin can’t help but smile as she watches Sung-joon sleeping, and he wakes up and catches her. She asks if he’s okay, but he tells her that no, he’s not, and it’s her fault. They go outside to talk, but she still won’t tell him why she’s acting so strange. He’s pretty sure of her feelings, so he doesn’t want any silly misunderstandings.
She tells him that maybe, just being his first love is special enough. She tries to explain but he interrupts, and says that back then, she took the place of his mother who wasn’t there. It was special because she was his only friend.
But that’s not why he likes her now — he likes her for who she is in the present. Even if they’d never met, he would still like her now. He asks her one last time if she’ll tell him why she’s acting like this.
Hye-jin finally admits that it’s because Ha-ri likes him a lot, and to her, Ha-ri is more than a friend. She’s as precious to Hye-jin as her family and Sung-joon are. If she’s with Sung-joon, Ha-ri will be hurt, which will hurt Hye-jin in return.
Sung-joon crouches in front of Hye-jin and forces her to make eye contact, and says, “The one I like, is you.” When they were kids, it was her, and when he didn’t know who she was, it was her. Now, and in the future, it’s her. Well, ~swoon~.
He says softly that he won’t push her, and he doesn’t want anything from her. He only asks that she not run away. He smiles when she sighs, saying that she’s even nicer now than when they were young, and that he’s happy she hasn’t changed.
The big news at work the next morning is Shin-hyuk — he’s rumored to be going to work for New Look, Most’s biggest rival magazine. He’s been scouted many times before, but he’s never left them. Of course Seul thinks this disqualifies Shin-hyuk as the hidden chaebol, and the only option left is… Poong-ho. Ha.
Shin-hyuk does show up for work though, bemused at his coworkers’ barrage of questions about his changing jobs. But he seems to confirm that he’s leaving, so Hye-jin follows him out of the office to ask if it’s true. He says he’s not going to New Look, but he is going — he just doesn’t know where, yet.
But it’s not all bad news today, as Most’s recent edition broke sales records. They’re not first place yet, that honor still belongs to New Look, but they’re getting close.
Sung-joon doesn’t join in the excitement, but Chief Editor Kim offers them her credit card to go out and have dinner on her. She does say ominously that next time she expects them to be Number One, which reminds everyone of how Sung-joon talks.
Ha-ri’s mom visits Hye-jin’s mom, her old friend, and shows her the jewelry that she’s been designing. Ha-ri’s mom says that she’s successful because she had the courage to leave a man she loved, but who didn’t love her, but that she regrets hurting Ha-ri. She’s been afraid to see her daughter until now, but she feels strong. She wants to take Ha-ri to live with her, but Ha-ri won’t even talk to her.
She texts Ha-ri to tell her that she’s leaving the country again in a few days, asking to see her before she goes. Ha-ri calls her back, and asks if she still makes that crab porridge she loves.
Hye-jin works late, until it’s just her and Sung-joon in the office. She makes some tea and asks him why he doesn’t discuss Most’s ranking with the team, and ask for their help. She’s concerned that he’s shouldering all the worry himself, so he angles for a hug to make him feel better. That makes Hye-jin nervous, and he backs off.
Later he searches Shin-hyuk’s employee file, and goes to the hotel where Shin-hyuk is staying. He sees Shin-hyuk leaving and the two go out for a drink, and Sung-joon asks why Shin-hyuk lives in a hotel.
He also asks if Shin-hyuk plans to go work for New Look, but Shin-hyuk doesn’t know either. Sung-joon asks him flat-out to stay at Most, even though he used to annoy him, because they need him. He tells Shin-hyuk that Most Korea is in danger of being shut down, so they need him to stay.
But Shin-hyuk doesn’t come to work the next day either, and everyone assumes he’s abandoned them. He doesn’t answer when Hye-jin calls him, and a strange man calls her right back and asks for her by name. He’s looking for Ha-ri, who suddenly turned in her resignation this morning.
Hye-jin rushes home, but all of Ha-ri’s personal things are gone. There’s a to-do list on her bed, outlining that she’s quitting her job, selling her car, and closing her accounts. Hye-jin remembers Ha-ri saying that she should disappear, and a neighbor confirms that she left today with all her things.
Hye0jin takes a cab to the airport, but can’t find her friend anywhere. She remembers a time when they were children, and Ha-ri had pushed an injured Hye-jin home in a shopping cart. Hye-jin had told her to leave her there and go get her mother, but Ha-ri had refused to go anywhere without her friend.
Distraught, Hye-jin calls out that Ha-ri can’t leave her like this. Crying her heart out, Hye-jin sits in the middle of the airport, and thinks to herself, “Ha-ri left me.”
COMMENTS
I love that there are so many different love stories in this show, and not all romantic ones. Yes, there’s the main love story between Sung-joon and Hye-jin, spanning the majority of their lives, but it’s also a friends’ love story. The love between Hye-jin and Ha-ri has just as many ups and downs, disappointments and betrayals, confessions and forgivenesses as any love between a man and a woman. More, in fact, than Sung-joon and Hye-jin, because they’ve literally spent their whole lives together. They even live together, and have been each other’s sole emotional support (and even financial support) for most of their lives. When Hye-jin says that Ha-ri is more than a friend for her, I believe her, and it makes sense that she’s Hye-jin’s primary priority. Sung-joon is an old friend too, and a first love, but there have been a couple of decades since they last saw each other. They don’t have the same kind of deep bond the two women have.
It’s touching that, when Hye-jin found out that Sung-joon didn’t talk to Ha-ri that night, the first thing Hye-jin did was run home to check on her friend. Even in the midst of reconnecting with her first love, her love for her friend carried just as much weight with her — more, in fact. And no matter how it can be argued that Ha-ri created her own heartbreak, she is heartbroken. She needs her understanding, loving best friend more than ever right now. It makes things that much more tragic that, even having that unconditional love and support from Hye-jin, Ha-ri can’t accept it out of her own feelings of guilt for betraying her friend.
But on the flip side, it’s sad that Hye-jin is willing to deny what she wants for her friend’s sake. I can see why she feels like she’d be taking the man her friend likes, but there’s such thing as being too selfless. After all, Sung-joon was her friend first, and her first love, first, not to mention how he feels about this and who he loves. And it seems like an extra slap in the face to find Ha-ri going back to her casual-dating ways so soon, when Hye-jin just hurt the man who loves her for her friend’s sake. It’s no wonder they fought, and it’s good to see that Hye-jin does have a threshold of what she’ll accept. Interesting that what she was upset about wasn’t what Ha-ri did with Sung-joon, but the way she acted like it was no big deal that she was in pain.
As for Sung-joon, I adore him for his honesty, and how he won’t accept anything less from Hye-jin. It’s not necessarily a strength all the time — it’s what made him say such hateful things ot her when they first met. Complete honesty can be a bad thing sometimes, but when he turns it on for a good purpose, it’s pretty powerful. It’s wonderful how he knows that Hye-jin isn’t being honest with him about why she’s backing away, and he doesn’t stop until he gets an honest answer in return. He’s not even pushy or intrusive about it, just gently insistent that he deserves the truth. His biggest fault can also be his greatest asset, and it’s wonderful to see a drama hero say No, we’re not doing to have misunderstandings or secrets, we’re going to talk about this like people who care about each other.
It’s so sad to see that, instead of solving all the miscommunication and confused feelings issues, the revealing of Hye-jin’s true identity has only created more problems. Luckily, two of the three people involved have a history of being honest and willing to talk things out, so surely they’ll be able to straighten out this mess before long. If only they can stop Ha-ri from running away, again.

There is so many things wrong with this eps. ugh it's gonna take awhile for my rants. sorry about it
First sung joon
everyone is over hill for him, I love him don't take me wrong but, remember in the beginning when he was a total jerk and hye jin was wondering what happened to him in the past that changed him so much? yeah I'm still waiting for that character's development. I feel like him and siwon character lack so much more development. We know the girls' story better but than the guys...I mean all we know about SJ is that his mom is dead, his dad got remarried and he moved from ny to korea to save THE MOST korea. Meanwhile siwon's, he's the crazy reporter, he lives in hotel, he is the son of the CEO, he had a pet once. I just feel like they spend so much time developping the girls and their friendship that they left a few plot hole in it.
Speaking about plot hole, what happened with that puzzle lol? It just magically reappeared in HJ's possession.
And is everyone else surprise with MH's mom appearance, I thought she was dead. It was just awkward like WHAT?? In the beginning I thought it was a dream sequence. I wished SJ let her speak and she had a chance to give him the letter, things could have been different. (plot hole)
And I sort of understood MH's reaction after. She was heartbroken but she can't tell HJ because she doesn't want her to feel burden by it. crying alone on the street...
I have a question: did they tried to make her the antagonist or the bad guy of the show? because I didn't think she was an antagonist. but she said in interviews that she got hate for the way her character changed.
I don't feel the chemistry between SH and HJ. the confession part seems forced in my opinion. It screamed "I cared about you in a lot of ways, I'm confessing so it's time for you to care about me too". And the phone rings and she is like "sorry I can't". I mean he knew that she loves SJ so why??
*Spoiler* remember in kill me heal me, park seo jun's character didn't force the love triangle onto HJ. He wanted her to be happy so he retreated on his own. loved it.
Every time, SH half jokingly confessed her, she obviously didn't took him seriously so he think now she will care?
And the last scene with HJ at the airport wiping like a baby was the last straw, so unnecessary.
There so many other things I want to talk about.

I don't know why this site won't let me reply directly to a particular person like it used to. Anyway, somebody said HJ had always been there for Ha Ri but not vice versa. That's not true. In fact, when SJ first made his appearance, HJ was always blathering and babbling on so that every time HR tried to tell HJ about her running into SJ, HR ended up not saying anything because she was conforting HJ who was freaking out over having to work with SJ. THAT'S how HR ended up taking it so far that it became hard to 'fess up to HJ (asking with HR's insecurities that letting go of the first guy to treat her decently). My point is these girls love each other on a two way street.

Some beanies are freaking out about the future eps while I'm just here thinking, this was not supposed to be the episode to end the week guys. So chill. We have all of 5 (*sobs*) eps to go. It not the end. I'm sure the girls will make up. I'm sure SH will get over HJ. And I HOPE (this is to writer-nim) we get some hot Park Seo Joon kisses in the coming eps (preferably EP 12).

MBC really sabotaged their own show. Odd-numbered episodes are just not written to end the week off with. We needed Episode 12 to wash the bad taste from our mouths. She Was Pretty would have benefited from a second baseball game this week to put the episodes back on track. I pray Episode 11's lull does not affect their record-breaking ratings because I want She Was Pretty to beat Yong-pal's 21.5%.

if only they would do 2 versions of the last episode . one where hj ends with sj and one where hj ends with sh. and voila everyone would be happy !
why am i always rooting for the second lead ????.
though i love sj, i do hope there will be some plot twist, and that this drama will be the first ever, where the girl ends up with the second lead .

Well, this is my least favorite episode so far...but I only started this drama from ep 6, so I don't know if the episodes 1 to 5 can beat this one lol I've read the recaps, though, and I'm not sure I want to see Sung-joon, the dickhead (pardon my speech) in those early eps, because I am in luuuurve with Sung-joon, the prince charming!
How he stares at HJ! And hugs. And his voice. His eyes. #melts
Oh I love SH too! But just like HJ, I see him as friend material only. He is (or was) h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s! Such a riot! Love him. The serious SH, not so much.
Thanks for the recap, Lollypip!

+ 1 The serious SH is a big no. I don't like his expression after leaving SJ's apartment in episode 10. Yes, everyone has flaws. It's good SJ looks stern outside, but sweet inside, the opposite to SH's character. He's goofy, funny, dorky, adorable, sweet outside, but perhaps complicated inside. These last two episodes give us a hint on his different character a bit...

I like to pretend the beginning of the drama didn't happen, it was not better than this episode, that's for sure.

"After all, Sung-joon was her friend first". No. Ha Ri was Hye Jin's friend first. Sung Joon moved into her house when she emigrated to Japan, remember ? They've been friends since birth, as Hye Jin said (in episode 9 I believe), they've have had each other's backs for their whole lives. It's natural for Hye Jin to feel uneasy about starting something with Sung Joon before her she recovers from her heartbreak. Even if it's her own fault.

I think they meant that SungJoon was friends with Hyejin first. Sungjoon only got to know HaRi recently.

Dear LollyPip, first thanks for the recap.
Of course this episode is chaotic. Truth has surfaced, so everyone must go through a period of rearange: who is this person?, why she lied to me?, what does that person means to me?, etc... But once all the truths has surfaced, everyone can assume their responsibilities, make amends and well, everything will go smoother.
On the other hand I am displeased with this new crop of Noble Idiocy, in which Hye-Jin must choose between a relationship with her first love and her lifelong friendship with Ha-Ri.
I hope Ha-Ri mends both her broken heart and her relationship with Hye-Jin soon. I guess she only needs to quietly meditate on her priorities away from the situation that hurts her. Better than getting trapped in a situation she can't control, I guess.

well, actually I'm sick of the fact that the first man always has to end up with the main woman. I mean that come on, k-drama always come up with the same routine of story line. this drama was all about how the support cast get the spotlight, meanwhile the drama itself didn't turn out that way. yes seong jun and hye jin are a longtime friend, and yes the loved each other, but it breaks me apart with the fact that hye jin didnt even bother shin hyuk's feelings towards her, and how that guy perfectly broken heart because of her. I hope the writer give us a fair ending, I'm not asking for a cheesy happy ending but just a fair ending, everyone should happy no matter what.

It's Shin Hyuk's fault really. As Sung Joon said "Unlike someone else, I'm not a coward who packages my feelings into a joke.".
Aside from the first scene in this episode, Shin Hyuk has always played out his feelings as a punch line. Because of this, Hye Jin couldn't take him seriously until her and Sung Joon's relationship was already too much. Hye Jin and Shin Hyuk's friendship is not as strong as her's and Ha Ri's that she would stay away from Shin Hyuk because of it.

This episode was so frustrating!
1) I loved that SJ finally learned the truth about HR and HJ.
2) But, HJ's noble idiocy was infuriating! This man is your first love. You are his first love. You all fell for your current selves, miso run off in love together. Instead, she totally dismisses HR's betrayal, and dismisses SJ's amazing confession for her betraying friend!
3) HJ and HR have an unbalanced friendship. HR takes way more than she gives. HJ shares EVERY part of herself with HR: her love and nurturing; her family; her home. The only time I've seen HR giving back was the first episode when she stepped on the guy's foot for talking about HJ.
It makes perfect sense now. HJ is selfless to a fault. HR is selfish to a fault.
As for SH. Love him, his quirkiness and weird ways. But, he waited until he was 100% sure HJ was in love with SJ before he decided to confess. That is asking, no, begging for failure.
Hopefully, the writers will tie up all of this extra drama, and get back to the romance.

Je t'aime, ma chère...
> This episode is a total drama for everyone; the episode itself and the comments here, lol
> Once again, I have to admit that I love HJ-HR's friendship, a kind of friendship in which I find it's rarely portrayed in k-drama. I mean, it's not just lighthearted kind of thing, happy, funny, all about smiles, laughter and so on. Here, it covers everything, not just on-the-surface friendship. What this friendship might have been through defined it well...
> If I were on HJ's shoes, I would definitely do what she did. I think she acted exactly the same as SJ. SJ once avoided her because he felt guilty over fake HJ (HR) in the previous episodes. It's about commitment and love (you know, not male-female love but something more general and pure). She felt guilty even more because HR left, leaving her of feeling responsible for the mess, for HR's broken heart, for their friendship, for something she thought she shouldn't have and get: SJ's love, her own happiness. I love how this drama doesn't only work on opposite gender love...
> HJ's parents are too adorable. Her mother is really beautiful and her father is cute.
> Despite placing HJ in this current position, this drama also work on something else. HR's mother told HJ's mother that she became she was today because she had COURAGE to leave the man she loved, but didn't love her back. It's a huge step in k-drama (and eastern cultures). Mostly, women especially, will stick to the husband and avoid divorce no matter what because of their concerns to the children, social acceptance, status, etc. Applause to this drama.
> And, it breaks the rule of 16-episode drama: the tenth-episode kiss. haha
Looking forward to watching episode 12 :)
Ti amo, amore mio. Je t'aime, ma chère...

This episode leaves almost everyone in the show a homework, mending all broken hearts and misunderstandings and solving mystery: HJ to HR, HR to HJ, SJ to HR, HR to SJ, HR's mother to HR, HR to her mother, Most Team to Writer Ten, plus the show to the viewers (five episodes) and the viewers to the show (comments on dramabeans, lol). Hope the writer and the director do not make the rest of the episodes seem to be forced to handle all these stuffs...
And, it's good SJ seemed to be patient awaiting HJ with her explanation on why she avoided him until finally she said HR liked him a lot... Five episodes left wouldn't be enough if SJ made it complicated. So, he said he didn't want any misunderstanding... Park Seo Joon, good work. Don't make us viewers go mad.

Everything you said is on point. There's so much going on beneath the surface of the Cyrano/Pretty Woman makeover plot, and it's a shame that there isn't more discussion on how this show operates on different levels.

I was sooo excited to watch this episode but when I already got my hands on it saw how it went, NAHHh.
I'm so mad with how this went down that I almost didn't finished it (but I still did because duh.). The only character who was honest in this episode is Sung-joon and Shi-Hyuk. The first caught me by surprise, while the latter caused me pain because Ism just plain annoyed. Seo-Joon didn't want to waste more time so he already want to get down into buisness, pronto. Good for him and me because at last, honest feelings have finally surfaced. On the other hand, despite all my love for him, I felt the need to punch Shi-Hyuk. Because dude, yes you confessed and got rejected but to move away because of that? Oppa? I expected more from you? WHY? and he downright ignored Jackson because she made a choice? Like, you asked her to choose and now you are mad for her decision? Eh?
And HeJin. Gurl. From what I understood from HaRi's letter, she is very rooting for you and your first love despite her pain. She is bad at dealing with her own pain, I can see that but I think Hari sees it as her punishment (she deserves it tbh) but to reject SungJoon because of that? Be selfless for once. Please.

About SH, I don't think he acted like that because he was rejected (or because HJ made a choice), it's more about the way he was rejected, that must hurt.
And I don't really get why people are so surprised by the fact that SH thinks about going away... I mean, after being rejected that way, would you stay and look all day long at the girl you love being lovey-dovey with her boyfriend ? He just needs some time !

Seeing young Hari for the first time in this episode makes me think viewers wouldn't be so against her if we'd seen more of her, and more of what she had done for Hyejin in the past. For us, only being thrown into their relationship just before things started to go wrong, it's easy for us to see HJ as a saint and HR as a life ruiner. Young!Hari was a great reminder that both of them have been there for each other no matter what until now, and the writers should've done so sooner. That is, of course, if the writers are planning for the friends to be better than ever by the end (which is probably the case).
'Hye-jin isn’t ready to accept her apology, reminding Ha-ri that she promised to tell Sung-joon the truth and set things right.' - I didn't think that's what was happening here, as much as that she was confused. Even then, I think she was worried for her friend, that she didn't get to explain her side of the story to the guy before being found out.

Am I alone in thinking SJ was going to kiss HJ when he finally found her after learning the truth? Heh. I mean, isn't uri OTP's first kiss together a bit overdue? IT'S EPISODE 11, DRAMALAND RULERS. (But then again, we got the first OTP kiss on Cinderella Unni at Episode 19...so this pales in comparison... BUT STILL)

Good thing Sung Joon is played by PSJ because he frustrates me to no end. I mean, okay, the girl you agreed to date for what you had in the present lied you and all, but how about breaking up with her first and then pursuing her best friend? *grumble* *grumble*
I feel so sorry for Ha-Ri but she had it coming :/

It was never said they were dating though. Sung Joon didn't reply to Ha Ri's confession. He was determined to treat her well and not concern her because she liked him and even though he didn't feel the same she still was his best friend.

Might I add that SJ had fuly intended to end it with HR and be honest about his feelings before he learned about her true identity? After he found out that this woman he had been beating himself up about was a fraud he only had one purpose: get to Hye Jin. He'd been waiting his whole life to reunite with her after all. And he'd fallen for her again. I don't think the average person would have held back and waited. How is he expected to hear HR out when she'd decieved him for so long?

I don't know, HR and HJ's friendship seems pretty one-sided to me, I mean with HJ always giving and getting hurt. if they're like sisters then they should care for each other and be completely honest with each other but seems like HJ is the only one doing that. I mean it's obvious HR isn't leaving but I'm still mad at her big time.
And I don't know why my SJ has to pay for her stupid mistake which by the way brought her heartbreak upon her...... grrrrrrrh

HJ's noble idiocy! was yelling at the screen when she started the "first love is soooo old school, you (SJ) are just one of my classmates haaaa....". love is selfish, folks, noble idiocy only causes more heartache and never works out in the end. woah, I finally see one of the truly honest guys as part of the OTP and his considerate way of handling a very confused love of his life. the only other one I've seem so far was JW from master's son where he also tried to be considerate to the ghost seeing Tae Yang when she needed to "find' herself. kudos to the writer for modernizing the K drama hero and making him more sensitive. for some reason, I can't feel as much for SH as SJ altho SH is by turns, self sacrificing and heroic and sweet to HJ. SJ and HJ are just made in heaven! I also love how this drama took 10 eps of time to lay the foundation of SJ's attraction to HJ such that he realizes that even if HJ were not the HJ he kept projecting onto her, he would still have liked her. He likes her for what she is now, altho he still cherishes the memory of their childhood. SJ is probably every woman's dream guy because he is deeply sentimental and unwavering in love. Altho quiet and honest to a fault, he is also intense and sincere. No clowning around and playing at deception the way SH does. what's up with SH's double identity anyway? he is obviously not just an editor. He is a bigshot writer? why hide that fact and hide his feelings for HJ? SH is just too elusive and full of secrets. loving this very sweet rom com! great recaps, gf!

I feel like I'm missing something. I'd read all the comments about Ha Ri running away from shame, guilt, etc. I watched the end and thought she left to be with her mom? Isn't that what the whole porridge conversation was about? She didn't know Hye Jin was going the noble idiot route and would interpret her actions this way. Honestly, I may be projecting here, but if the mom I was always missing came back, that would trump any other emotional breakthroughs I may be having at the moment. I was mostly upset the writer had manufactured this convenient misunderstanding bn our friends.
Anyway, whatever, who knows what really happened? Who knows if Shin Hyuk left for New Look? Why are people so mad at him already? He could be getting ready for some fan meetings if he is the mystery Ten writer.
I also agree with those who felt Shin Hyuk got the short end of the stick. He may be a huge joker, but his feelings are real, and for all Hye Jin is supposed to be this super considerate person, she really hasn't been all that awesome to him. I felt like she was constantly brushing him off and dismissing him after she got closer with SJ. If she really felt he was a friend, she would have respected him enough to give him a proper answer. Even if she was thinking of his finances when she gave him the money, she must know how that would make the other person feel. The almost impersonal way she handed it to him was pretty bad.
Lastly, put me in the camp for "yes, it's a good idea to take some time with SJ, but deliberately hurting him to achieve this goal is probably not the best way to go." How did she not realize she was stabbing his heart with her words and actions? Do you sacrifice one close friend for the sake of a closer friend?? And for those who say she had no choice but to lie to keep Ha Ri's secret, she could have just said she needed some time now. No need to plunge a knife into someone you're supposed to care deeply about.
It's actually a good thing the beginning still makes me not particularly care for Seong Joon because then her behavior would irritate me even more. (Seriously? Cannot forget he called her mentally handicapped. I don't have second lead syndrome but I'd take someone "tricking" me into buying them yummy street foods any day over emotional abuse.)

HR actually told Hye-jin that she would disappear. In addition to avoiding her and not once explaining to her how she fell for SJ and such. Her mom's arrival couldn't have come in a better time. So when she took off to the airport leaving a small note to her dear friend, it's really hard not to judge her.

I don't really think Hye Jin was thinking of not being with SJ because sot that HR could have him. I think it was more of a kindness/sympathy for HR. As in "a man is not going to break our friendship of many years" or "we both want him so fine neither of us should have him because he just showed up again but it has been just us for years."
I do want to remind you guys that HR was HJ BFF first. I agree that HR left, it will be good for her and maybe she can come back to HJ when she sorts things out.
SH though!!!!!! BAWHHHHHH he breaks my heart! he is so precious and liked HJ for who she was from the beginning!
Somebody pleas fix him, he is killing me.

This episode was so heartbreaking, I literally stared at the wall for a few minutes. Siwon's character makes me so sad --- I wanted to hug him so tightly. Hari and Hyejin's relationship, on the other hand, makes this story more interesting. Now that the real HJ has been exposed, now that HJ can finally really be with SJ~ HJ just lost 2 friends just like that. It's like she's being heart broken three times simultaneously.
Another thing that has been puzzling me in this drama is the sudden change in SJ's character. I am hoping that the writers will have a logical explanation Don't forget how mean he was at the beginning. Argh! As a viewer, I still dwell in that fact even after SJ has been swooning me lately. The fact remains~ he was a total prick to the random girl which Hyejin was at the beginning. He became the most admired to most hated in MOST for being a prick boss.. Ha! And... did anybody else get confused with the puzzle pice Hyejin was holding. A few EPs ago, I remember Hari sectretly taking it and giving it to SJ.

I didn't deem it possible for HR's behaviour to get any worse. Selfish and self-centred till the end. I wouldn't mind not seeing her again. Can we just forget about her and fill the remaining episodes with team Most.
SJ is so sweet and gentle, it's a bit surreal to think he is the same person that was a big a-hole in a number of episodes. Kim Hye-jin, you big old saint, maybe it's a good thing you're so forgiving and plain nice.

i hate that hari had to sink to most pathetic. especially since i don't even feel sorry for her. i know she didn't really wanna come clean but she wrote the letter so she should have given it to him. it was honest, straightforward and remorseful. iono why they had to 'talk' just for her to give it to him. that's annoying. but it can't be a drama without some drama. *sigh*
i'm glad she left. saves me the trouble of fast forwarding her scenes. i hope she won't return until the finale. but it was shitty to leave without a note, voicemail or anything. iono how a lifelong friendship goes down the tubes because of 2 months crushing on a dude. smh
