Scandal writer returns with new drama I Have a Lover
by javabeans
SBS has a new weekend drama in planning, and has granted the upcoming I Have a Lover a timeslot later this year, to come from Bae Yumi, the writer of MBC’s Scandal (though I know her better from cute rom-coms Who Are You — the Yoon Kye-sang/Go Ara drama — and Really Really Like You). I didn’t watch Scandal, but I did enjoy the other two, which were sweet and funny.
Granted, I Have a Lover doesn’t sound like it’ll be in that vein, being a sad story of a pair of twin sisters who are forcibly separated. Oh no, another separated-twin story? What is IN the water these days? (The other one currently in the works is Who Are You – School 2015, where Kim So-hyun plays twin characters; one sister is the It girl who goes missing, and the other sister transfers to her school and becomes the new popular girl.)
So okay, the plot may not be the most original, but Bae Yumi has been successful enough in her two-decade-long career to have earned the star writer designation; her other dramas include Romance, Happy Together, Twinkle Twinkle, and Country Princess. So maybe she knows a little something about how to string together a compelling story.
I Have a Lover is set to air following the highly anticipated In Time With You remake drama, The Time I’ve Loved You, 7000 Days (which may or may not star Ha Ji-won). That puts its premiere in the latter half of the year.

" Oh no, another separated-twin story? What is IN the water these days? "
How many does that make? By my count, two. Compare that to the endless string of DID Dramas and vampire Dramas, and this reaction seems rather OTT. Two swallows do not a summer make, and 2 similarly-themed Dramas don't equal a trend. Esepcially not when compared with the REAL trends - mental disorders (esp. DID) and vampirism.

no, i think in dramaland now the recent trend to replace DID is all dramas from webtoon and hogu's syndrome to every possible leading man even when he's vampire..he has to be a hogu vampire or vampire with DID

Twins. Where one of them has a DID: one personality is a hogu and another personality is a chaebol jerk. The other twin is a vampire with a deep secret. They both end up falling in love with same woman. She is poor and has time travelled from the future.
She falls in love with both twins thinking theyre the same, also one has DID so technically she loves 3 guys.
But only one can win the lady love? Nugulkka?

Not a fan of the premise, but DEFINITELY a fan of Bae Yumi. Scandal was an excellently written drama that rose above the heartwarming cuteness of Who Are You and Really Really Like You to completely blow my mind with its plot, characters and dialogue. The amazing way the story fit together and the way every episode upped the suspense until the very end left me in awe, honestly. The premise (and the title) had me expecting an overly dramatic melo with hysterics and tragedyporn everywhere, but it was thoughtful, subtle, heartwrenching, and heartwarming by turns. The cast and directing were exemplary as well. Honestly cannot praise this drama enough. Every character had a journey and none of them were one-dimensional. It was 36 episodes but not a moment of filler. Everyone in the cast was on fire. And that soundtrack...
Okay I'll stop now. Suffice it to say that even though the premise has been done before (and by this writer, even, in Twinkle Twinkle) I'll be there with bells on. Here's hoping for a director and cast that makes the most of her writing.

OMG... Scandal: A Shocking and Wrongful Incident was by far my favorite drama of 2014. There was nothing else that even came close, with the fabulous writing, and incredible cast. It was Daebak...

i watched all the episodes from that drama (Scandal) and cried in EVERYONE of them! From the premise it was obvious that a happy ending was out of reach but i watched it anyway!
It was actually a very touching love story between a son and his 2 dads. He made the most of a situation he did NOT cause.

I didn't see Scadal, but hasn't "Twinkle Twinkle" been a ratings disaster? Why would you hire the same writer for the same time slot? Meh it's not like I'm gonna watch it anyway. Separated twin sisters sounds boring af.

Not been a fan of "Scandal", but I'm pretty allergic to the genre anyway. Somehow that whole "torture the people you love and care for just to give the evil overlord a chance to repent" is not my thing for some reason.
Apart from these personal issues, the incoherent characters, the stock family drama plot points and the usual corporate nonsense, the writing wasn't too bad.

Watching I Have a Lover in 11/19/15 and it's really good! I have yet to watch Scandal, but if the writing is as good as IHAL then I'll watch it once I'm finished.

This writer in I Have a Lover tackled a topic in which she doesn't have a clue in how to develop the characters or understanding the emotional impact of forgiving a cheating spouse. She had the affair in the beginning down, after the first 10 episodes, she didn't effectively bring the cheating husband and wife back together. It just happened. He was still with the other woman when he then after 4 years decided he want his "new" ex-wife back. The writer IMO made a mess of this drama. If the male lead in this drama hadn't been an attractive actor, the viewers I think would have a different take on this drama and the cheating husband. The writer gave the husband absolutely no redeeming qualities. She gave them all to the second lead---literally.
