Answer Me 1994: Episode 21 (Final)

We finally conclude the mystery and the journey, as the beginning of adulthood ushers in the end of an era. Everybody gets a name and Na-jung gets her husband, which means she gets to kick that headless groom she’s been marrying for ten weeks to the curb and replace him with the real deal. Bye, Headless Guy.

The series went out on a high of 11.9% ratings. It’s a bit of a rushed production that could’ve used a few hours of editing finesse had they had the time, but overall it goes out in true Answer Me style, as a love letter to the nineties and bygone youth.

EPISODE 21: “To the nineties”

Both the wedding and the housewarming party draw to a close, and everyone gets up to leave except for Oppa and Chilbongie who linger behind. One of them comes up to put an arm around Na-jung as they say goodbye to their guests, and they note that sometimes first loves do make it.

We go back to 2000, when Na-jung gets that message from Oppa on her way to Chilbongie, asking if she’ll come by because he’s sick. She bursts into tears right there in the cab, and sobs the whole way.

The doorbell rings and Chilbongie opens his door… to Binggeure, who’s here to chase him down after he fled the hospital sooner than he was supposed to.

And at the same time, Na-jung braces herself before ringing the doorbell… and Oppa answers. She cries, half-angry that he called and that she came despite it all, and brushes past him to go inside.

He tries to hold onto her but she shakes him off, and he finally just throws his arms around her and hugs her close. She cries into his shoulder and her legs turn to jelly, sending them both crumbling to the ground in tears.

Oppa just cups her face in his hands and looks at her for a long moment, and finally whispers as a tear rolls down his cheek: “I love you. I love you.” Once he says the words, she’s the one to reach out and wipe the tears from his face, and she leans in for a kiss.

Oppa comes to work the next day all better from his cold and floating on cloud nine. He hears the other residents oohing over Chilbongie being at the hospital, trying to figure out how to get an autograph.

Na-jung gets calls from Yoon-jin, then Samcheonpo, then Haitai, all telling her to hurry home because Mom’s cooking something special. That’s so cute. She asks Haitai if he called Binggeure and Chilbongie too, and that’s when he tells her that Chilbongie is at the hospital and checked himself out before he was supposed to.

She calls Chilbongie to ask where he is, and finds him at the baseball field. He waves at her from the mound and she waves back from the stands before coming out to the field. He makes her stop when she’s a few feet away though, not letting her come any closer.

He puts on a smile and says he has a wish, and points to a glove hanging on a bat at the edge of the field. He asks if she’ll grant his wish if he hits it, and though he struggles with his injured arm, he hits his target like he always did.

He turns to her, “Na-jung-ah…” but before he can even say it, she rushes him with a hug, throwing her arms around his waist and leaving him speechless. Aw. He smiles, “How’d you know?”

He continues, “I don’t think I’ll be able to call. I think it’ll take some time. Sorry.” He holds on for one more moment before pushing her away. Na-jung looks up at him: “Joon-ah, of all the people I know, you’re the handsomest.”

She names all his good traits and says that he’s the most impressive person she’s ever met: “Do you know how thankful I am that someone like you liked me?” She says it was because of him that she found out that she wasn’t half bad herself.

She says that someday if she ever has a child, she’s going to brag about how that famous person on TV liked her. “Joon-ah, thank you for liking me. Because of you, my age twenty will be a beautiful memory.”

They smile at each other and he swallows back tears: “Me too.” He hugs her one last time and says goodbye. And then long after she’s gone, he sits alone looking out at the field, and lets himself cry. I’m not crying. I’m not. *sniff*

Later as he packs, Haitai calls to say he should come by the house to have drinks with everyone on his last day. He can’t, of course, because of Na-jung, but he has a final doctor’s appointment anyway to check on his injuries before he flies out.

At the hospital, the doctor tells him his shoulder and back aren’t in good shape, and at some point he’s going to need surgery. It’s his back that’s worse off, and the doc has called in a specialist to do a consult.

In walks Garbage, who’s now the head brain/spine doctor, which is a really hard thing to wrap my head around because I’ve seen him wipe his face with a floor mat. The air is awkward, naturally, and Chilbongie sits quietly through the session as Garbage the Neurosurgeon explains that he can treat it without surgery, but that means he’s always one injury away from permanent damage. He says the same thing—at some point, he’ll need surgery, and perhaps sooner is better so that he’ll have a chance to recover.

The residents line up to get autographs afterward, and Garbage waits till they’re the only two left in the room. There’s no more avoiding it now, so they sit down for a chat. Garbage tells him about his back in simpler layman terms, and gives him advice about what to do.

He knows Chilbongie is headed to the airport to fly out tonight, and stops to put a hand on his arm as he says goodbye and tells him sincerely to take care of himself. Chilbongie replies, “You too, sunbaenim.”

Garbage turns to go and then whirls back around, “Hey, you used to call me hyung. Are you not calling me hyung anymore? What’s with the sunbaenim? All the other guys call me hyung. You’re the only one. What’s that about?” Chilbongie smiles and asks if he’d be able to do that if the roles were reversed, and promises, “Next time. Next time, sunbaenim.” Garbage looks at him thoughtfully… and then scrunches his face to whine that he really dislikes him. It’s cute that he’s trying for the laugh.

As Haitai and Samcheonpo watch Chilbongie board his flight on the news, Haitai decides that he’ll name his child after Chilbongie so that he makes a boatload of money. Samcheonpo says he’ll do really badly in school then, so Haitai revises his plan and says he’ll name his child after Garbage. Samcheonpo: “Do you plan to raise him as half-human, half-beast?” Lol.

At the hospital the next day, Oppa tells Na-jung he’s five seconds away from his office, where she’s waiting with every snack imaginable on his break. His pager rings and he gets lost in thought for a moment, and Na-jung has to call him over and over: “Oppa. Oppa! Jae-joon oppa!”

He finally turns around. And just to put a stamp on it, a close-up of his nametag reads: Kim Jae-joon.

We go back to the wedding footage, and this time we finally get to see the head attached to the groom, and it is indeed Oppa, looking sheepish when Dad scolds him for choosing such a terrible day to have a wedding, having to pry Na-jung away from Dad at the altar, and smiling back at her as they walk back down the aisle as husband and wife.

And at the housewarming party, this time it’s Oppa who takes the phone from Sook-sookie to tell Mom that he’s usually a good kid (while kicking him silently), and he’s the one that Shi-won recognizes as looking strangely familiar, though neither of them can remember why. Heh.

And as the friends get ready to leave, Chilbongie stands up after tying his shoe, standing in the doorway with the rest of the gang after all. Turns out this house was his to begin with, which explains why he’s so comfortable here (enough to take a nap and order takeout). He even took a hit when he let Na-jung take over the contract at a lower price, and they joke that it was the First Love Discount.

She warns him that he can’t take it back, and he says his wife complained, but she counters that she has three kids which pretty much makes her constantly broke. Chilbongie calls out to Garbage because he left his phone behind, and calls him hyung.

Haitai looks at Garbage and Na-jung together and says that sometimes first loves do make it, and they each go down the row saying “Like us,” and even Chilbongie joins in, which makes everyone laugh. The non-blurry wedding photo shows the whole gang there at the wedding, including Chilbongie.

After the housewarming party, Na-jung cleans up, and Oppa goes to check on the kids. The youngest is stirring, so he puts him to sleep, and they nod off with their legs crossed exactly the same way. That’s so cute.

As they get ready for bed, Oppa calls Chilbongie impressive for finishing out his pro career (he’s playing for the Twins after all, fulfilling Dad’s wish), instead of coaching in the States with so many offers coming in.

Na-jung runs down a to-do list with Oppa, calling him oppa, yeobo, and Sannie’s dad in three consecutive sentences. He laughs and tells her to stick to calling him one thing. She says it’s all the same, but he says each makes him feel differently.

He says when she calls him oppa he wants to be really good to her and take her out to movies, and when she calls him Sannie’s dad he gets strength like he’s suddenly a bear. “And yeobo?” He shudders and pretends to be annoyed at the sound of the word, so she yells at him to get away, now calling him Kim Jae-joon-sshi. He just gives her hugs and kisses, laughing.

He asks why Haitai married so late, and she says they had a long-distance relationship too, and broke up another time before getting back together. Oppa asks where she went, expecting the name of another country, but Na-jung says Suwon, which is like twenty minutes away, ha.

Back in 2002, Haitai is still living at the boardinghouse, and Dad asks if he’s going to live here forever. Haitai says he’s saving money, and Mom insists she loves having Haitai around.

Samcheonpo and Yoon-jin are newlyweds, and Haitai says they just had a huge fight the other night because Seo Taiji came back with a new album, and Yoon-jin ran out and bought a hundred copies to pass out to everyone she knows and even strangers in the street. Dad holds up his copy.

They light up when Chilbongie shows up on the news in a report about his surprise return to Korea, and we finally get his name: Kim Sun-joon. Dad worries about him, knowing he’s back for surgery and that he’ll be all alone. Mom and Dad ask Haitai if they’ve talked to him at all, assuming that naturally they’ve lost touch.

Chilbongie returns to an empty apartment, and ponders Binggeure’s worries about him undergoing surgery alone. I’m gonna cry. WHY IS HE ALONE? He winces in pain at his shoulder and opens up his sad empty fridge, and then the doorbell rings. Please be the gang. Please be the gang.

Yay, it’s the gang! He’s shocked as they just barge in unannounced and make themselves at home, talking as if no time has passed. Na-jung is on the phone with Mom who wants to make him food and the rest of the guys are already getting out bottles and bottles of soju.

Binggeure tells him he was going to come alone but they already knew and came along. Two seconds later the doorbell rings again with the chicken they already called to have delivered. The shock finally wears off and Chilbongie laughs.

The group gets into a debate about whether or not Chilbongie should have surgery now, with Haitai and Yoon-jin arguing that he should finish out the season first and go out on a high, and Na-jung and Samcheonpo arguing that he needs to hurry up and get surgery so that he can recover sooner and have a better outlook for his long-term career.

It’s hilariously heated on both sides, and even funnier for the fact that they’re not listening to Chilbongie or even asking what he thinks, determined to come to a decision as a group, because that’s how they do things. This makes me so happy.

They make Chilbongie make the ramyun while they continue to argue over his future, and Binggeure says they might end up crashing here if they keep drinking. But Chilbongie says that Haitai gets up early to go hiking in the morning, and Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo are taking English class in the mornings, and Na-jung visits Garbage on the weekends.

Binggeure wonders how Chilbongie knows more about their daily routines than he does. A flashback montage shows Chilbongie alone in the States, lighting up every time he received a new email from one of them. They wrote back and forth the whole time, and never lost touch. Awwww.

Oppa is working in Gangneung now, which means Na-jung only sees him on weekends, though she tells Mom and Dad that she’s happier than she’s ever been. She happily lays out her outfit to wear tomorrow to go see Oppa, and heads to bed.

But just as she lies down, she hears someone come through the front gate. She sits up as Oppa sneaks into her room, having driven all the way here just to see her a little earlier.

He snuggles up in bed with her, and Na-jung says matter-of-factly, “If we get caught like this, we’ll both die by Dad’s hand.” He says it’s okay, “I have to get my head cracked open once before we get married anyway, so it’s all the same.” Haha.

She asks how he knew, and says with a huge smile that Dad has plans to kill and pickle him. I love that she says this stuff in the tone of an endearment. She asks when they’ll tell Dad, and he says they’ll tell them soon and she can just hide behind him.

She whispers, “Jae-joon oppa, I love you. Really.” He says he knows and gives her kisses. And then we see their two sets of red family mittens sitting side by side on her desk.

On the day that they do tell Dad about their plans to get married, he comes at them with the giraffe paddle again, screaming his head off. They protest that he’s known they’ve been dating for two years so marriage was inevitable, though of course Dad argues that it’s really been seven years since they started this crazy mess, and refuses to be party to it all over again.

Dad’s temper always precedes his softer side, so he declares that they can do whatever the hell they want, but he’s not going to that wedding. Mom takes their side and says she’ll go, but Dad brings them both to tears when he screams that they hammered a nail into his best friend’s heart and his own once before, asking how they can bring up marriage again so flippantly.

Oof. It’s really Oppa’s relationship to the parents that gets me in the heart—I think Dad was more heartbroken over the first engagement than the kids were. Oppa fights back tears and gets down on his knees, and pulls Na-jung down too. He promises, “Father, we’ll live well.”

Na-jung brings Mom coffee outside, and asks if Mom likes Oppa that much—she always took his side, even the first time when Dad was so against them dating. Mom: “He’s my son. Jae-joonie is my son.”

Mom says she might not know, but that first time when Dad was so upset, Mom was just grateful and cried by herself in the bathroom. She thinks back to that day, when Oppa had first told Mom and Dad about them.

After Dad walks out in silent protest, Mom tells Garbage it’s okay and cheers him on: “Mom is on your side.” She changes the subject asks if he’s picked a specialty yet, and he says he chose neurosurgery.

Mom instantly starts to cry. “It’s because of Hoon, isn’t it?” Awww, Oppa. She says he stayed by Hoon’s side the whole time he had surgery for his brain tumor, and doesn’t even need to tell her—she knows he chose that field because of Hoon.

He lies and says it isn’t, and she tells him to choose something else to make life easier for himself, and that he needn’t do this for her. Oppa just takes her hands and swears it’s the field he wants to go into, and hugs her while she cries. Dammit, you can always count on Oppa for a sneak-cry, just when you thought you were all clear.

Back in the present, Oppa is now on pins and needles around Dad, who gives him the silent treatment and only makes Oppa more nervous and fidgety, if that’s even possible. Meals are tense, and he gets slammed in the face with a ham when he accidentally flicks a radish in Dad’s face.

By February, Oppa brings Chilbongie hospital food. Aw, you fixed up Chilbongie. And in March, he’s still following Dad on eggshells, trying to be on his best behavior and killing Dad’s favorite plant in the process.

Chilbongie is still recovering in the hospital in April, and the gang comes in for regular visits to play games and shoot the breeze. In May Oppa is still on Dad’s bad side, and by June, it’s sort of turned into this immature game, where Oppa follows Dad around like his shadow, and Dad runs away like a little kid.

Oppa follows him to the neighborhood store and perks up whenever he has the chance to do something right like remembering what Mom asked him to buy or paying or doing the heavy lifting.

Dad scowls gruffly the whole time, but then as soon as Garbage steps out with groceries in hand, he’s bragging to the shopkeeper about his doctor son-in-law. Omg. So cute. And SO like Dad.

Four days before the wedding, Korea plays against Italy in the 2002 World Cup, and everyone gathers at the house decked out in their red shirts. Everyone bets on Korea while Dad is the loner who bets on Italy, and then Chilbongie arrives with chicken and joins Team Italy.

Korea ties the game which sends them into overtime, and Garbage, who’s playing bookie for the day, decides that it’s the last chance for anyone to switch their bets if they pay a little more cash. Dad stays firmly on the wrong side, but Chilbongie decides to change over at the last minute.

Garbage takes it back and says he missed his window, and Chilbongie whines, “Hyuuuung!” Cuuuute. Garbage caves to being called hyung, though he tells him he can pay double because he’s a major leaguer. Ha.

Korea wins and makes it to the quarterfinals, and the house erupts in cheers and kisses for all. Dad makes sure to take back his money during the commotion, lol.

Mom announces the big news that Haitai is finally leaving the nest for an apartment of his own, and Dad tells them they’ll be selling the house because nobody stays at these old-fashioned boardinghouses anymore. Aw, sad. End of an era.

Mom tells all the kids to sleep over tonight, and offers to make whatever they want for breakfast. She fills the table with mountains of all their favorite foods, and then everyone comes down for their last meal together at the house, trying their best not to cry.

Haitai can’t even take a bite because he’ll probably sob into his rice (he really did love Mom best, I think) and heads upstairs to finish packing.

Samcheonpo comes up and helps him pack the giant puffy blanket they shared for years, and wonders why he’s taking such a heavy thing. Haitai says he can’t sleep without it.

Then Samcheonpo remembers that it was his, and then they go back and forth trying to remember whose mom sent it. Samcheonpo says he can hardly remember, “What’s mine became yours and what was yours became mine, and now I can’t tell what’s yours-mine or mine-yours anymore.”

He goes back and forth so many times that Haitai loses track: “So whose is it?! Mine or yours?” Samcheonpo says it doesn’t matter: “You have it.” Awwww.

The kids gather downstairs to say goodbye, and Haitai busts out his newfangled digital camera to take a picture. They gather outside the house for a group shot.

Afterwards Dad writes up a handwritten note to put over their boardinghouse sign that says they don’t take boarders anymore, and Na-jung watches with a long face.

Samcheonpo: On June 19, 2002, Shinchon Boardinghouse closed its doors. Thus we became Shinchon Boardinghouse’s first and last boarders. At my age twenty that wasn’t anything special, in a Seoul [called formally Seoul Special City] of ten million, the special connections that were like a miracle. That place, that made the youths of a couple of country bumpkins bustling, noisy, and eventually special. We spent a very special time together at Shinchon Boardinghouse. We cried, laughed, met, parted, and ached. We had different memories, different connections, different loves, but we were in the same time and the same place together, like a miracle.

A trip down memory lane brings us back to the night of the World Cup, when Chilbongie runs down the street holding six chickens in his hands. He suddenly drops out of frame and the fried chicken goes flying, and we see that he’s collided with someone and broken her fall. Eep! The boy just had back surgery!

He helps her up and she lifts the headband out of her face, and omo! Jung Yumi! She says she’s okay but as he cleans up the chicken, she hobbles around clearly missing a slipper.

He asks if she lost something, and she cries after her ddal-ddalie, which is exactly the word that Na-jung uses for slippers, and one of the first conversations they had at the house about Oppa’s ddal-ddalie being his favorite and Chilbongie finding her strange words for things cute.

Jung Yumi suddenly slips into her country accent as she hops around looking for her shoe, and Chilbongie just smiles after her and laughs to himself. Thank goodness they got an actress I love—I think I might’ve died a little inside if they had paired him with someone less than stellar.

Back in 2013, Haitai takes a call from his boss late at night, and Na-jung shuts the TV off, telling her three young sons that chasing stars will make them stupid (ha, it’s A-Pink, for one last Jung Eun-ji cameo). And Samcheonpo tells his cabbie the best route to take home like an expert.

And at the house, Dad takes down the last sign for new boarders.

Samcheonpo: Right now we might be pitiful salarymen who are mindful of the world, but we were once Korea’s first new generation: Generation X. We might now be ajummas who pour on the nagging like waterfalls, but once we were hot-blooded youth who hanged our lives on our oppas. And we were the first generation who was blessed to experience both an analog and digital world.

I repent for the days I used to belittle seventies music and eighties movies. That those movies, that music weren’t just movies and music, but your youth and your era—is something that I now realize when I am no longer young. December 28, 2013. In a few days, we become forty. To all the forty-year-old youths of Korea, and to everyone who lived through the nineties and endured till now, I dedicate these words to you:

Do you remember that we lived through a beautiful age, that our brilliant youth shone brightly, that our relentless loves ran hot, that we were great in years gone by. Though the next era may be a difficult one, let us live it passionately enough to be old-fashioned. That era that was so hot and innocent that I long for it with a chill. Do you hear me? If you do, answer me, my nineties.

COMMENTS

The finale delivered a faithful ending given the final trajectory of the show, so there weren’t any missing pieces or huge twists, and I think in general it puts in every bit of effort to give everyone a believable happy ending with no resolution left unturned. Because I was annoyed enough that we were dragging the mystery all the way to the finale, I was glad when Na-jung made her choice in the first five minutes, which in the very least gives us the rest of the episode for some closure and a chance to wrap up everyone’s stories. I still think the hour and a half left something to be desired for the secondary characters, but I much prefer an ending that focuses on the family as a whole and what that house did to bring these people together, so points for that.

As for Na-jung’s choice, I fully expected her to pick Oppa, and I fully expected to have my heart break for Chilbongie, so I was neither disappointed nor surprised about it. I don’t even feel weird about my feelings being split (in that I’m happy for Oppa and Na-jung and crying for Chilbongie), because the show was written to make me feel bipolar about the romance. I do think in that sense neither guy gets the classic win because both got shafted throughout the journey for the sake of keeping them in the race till the last possible second, but as far as resolutions go, I was satisfied for both of them and found the final hour more pleasant than most of the second half of the series, which so often put mystery before character development.

I’ve said as much already in my year-end review so there’s no need to rehash everything, but it goes without saying that Answer Me 1994 got stuck in its own tunnel of mystery, and sacrificed far too much of what was good about the show in service of fueling this strange fixation with the bait-and-switch. I mean this on a structural storytelling level, and not the fact of the overarching who’s-the-husband mystery, because that’s just a gimmick and is as annoying or not depending on how they want to play it. The writer was just obsessed with the bait-and-switch in this drama, wherein we’re purposely led to believe one truth (they’re siblings/not), or more frequently led down a path of murkiness where nobody outright says a thing (What does Binggeure feel for Oppa? What does Oppa feel? What is Na-jung’s reaction to anything?) just so that the story can be clever and jump out at us with a surprise twist.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it’s confusing, but by and large what happens if you do it for long enough is that we stop trusting your truth as truth and keep ducking for that sudden left hook. I felt totally shafted on Binggeure’s character development and found his sudden resolution to be a twist for twist’s sake—had he been confused about his sexuality, been exploring what his conflicting feelings meant, had we been in on his journey from the start or been allowed to know what he was going through, I’d have found his resolution to be fulfilling and a nice statement about the fluidity of sexuality and the importance of choice. Mostly though, I feel cheated out of what could have been that story because the show was more concerned with teasing the idea that he’d be gay so that they could swing around and do the big tadaaaaa moment. What is the point of that? I don’t disagree with the outcome, but I’m disappointed in how we got there.

The biggest misstep was with Oppa and Chilbongie, which of course ignited some crazy fan wars, the depths of which I don’t care to relive. The story chose a frustrating withholding strategy to prolong the central love triangle by taking turns putting Oppa in the corner and then Chilbongie in the corner, then back and forth and back again, until at some point we stopped caring whose turn it was and wanted it to stop. For as much thought as this writer puts into creating nuanced characters, she let The Hand of Mystery motivate their actions, which I found to be endlessly frustrating. I kept wanting deep, complex reasons, and kept getting non-answers and purposeful omissions for the sake of keeping things opaque.

Now that we’re able to look back on the series as a whole, the latter half really sags with the weight of a single mystery stretched far too thin—now it shows just how little conflict was being prolonged for that much story time, and makes me wish they had just answered the question early if only to force them to come up with more story afterwards. If they had told this story in twelve episodes, it might’ve been brilliant. Told in twenty-one, it loses all that pizazz. It’s doubly encumbered by the episode length, which grew preposterously long and drew complaints, eventually leading to the production releasing apologies, but sticking to its hour-and-a-half episodes anyway. What kills me is that I know this director has a strong sense of comic timing because Answer Me 1997 was spot-on and felt whip-smart because of its pace (until it also started to lag via bloated air time). This time scenes went on endlessly, jokes got lost because there were no editing choices made, and I could actually feel them padding out episodes and refusing to kill their babies, which dulled the zing factor—and one of my favorite things about this franchise is its zing! It felt like a raw production that should’ve gone through one more hardcore editing pass, perhaps from someone who wasn’t so attached to the cast.

Even still, this show was fantastic when it was firing on all cylinders—when friends became family, when people showed up for each other, and when they finally learned how to ask for someone to stay by their side. Go Ara finally got to shed her acting criticism and her just-a-pretty-face image, and did an fantastic job of being believable in every moment, no matter what tiny thing she was doing. It was lovely to watch. Jung Woo is just amazing, and gave Oppa a vulnerability and a depth beyond what was written. His character is literally one that can’t exist without that actor, which you can’t say about most roles. Yoo Yeon-seok got the full Nineties Lee Jung-jae workup, so in a meta sense he gets cosmically rewarded for walking away without the girl; you get to take all of the other women in the world with you, which you can’t exactly call a raw deal. I’m pretty sure I haven’t watched a drama that so romanticized an unrequited love and gave it the hero treatment since the nineties, so I have to assume his entire character is a love letter to that era. Which I guess just makes me a goner from the start.

In execution, this drama was proof that you do lose something when you try to have your cake and eat it too. But what this franchise always manages to do right is make us smile and look back on our own youths with the same sense of longing and nostalgia, and the hindsight that comes from maturing. I wish it had been a smoother ride because I love all the characters dearly, but I’m glad we at least go out on a good note. Thanks for the memories, Shincheon Boardinghouse—the good, the confusing, the funny, the frustrating, the heartrending, and the sweet ones all.

Actually there are a quite a lot of us nodding our heads at what was, quite possibly, the most obvious ending ever, thank you.

Yeah but not everyone accepts it lol
Great show though, great characters and I will forever treasure it for introducing me to YYS. Chilbongie is getting very close to pushing JJW (Master's Sun) from the top K-Drama male character spot in my heart...sigh.

You describe it best GF! Bipolar... but the writing actually did intended to make us feel this way for this last episode anyway...

I thought I was crazy... I was crying and laughing and crying and dying...

Although I am #teamoppa, but I hope for Chilbong happy ending...

Yoo Yeon Seok killed the parting scene... when he was sitting on the bench alone crying... I never cried this hard for the drama, even more than I cried for Oppa+Najung scene.

Perhaps in an alternate universe or perhaps not in a K-drama... perhaps Chilbong character might have a chance with Najung...

But from the get-go I guess we all know that Oppa will be endgame... this is someone that Najung loved all her life, while with the possible twist, Chilbong could be someone that Najung grow to loves, but just with the traditionalist setting of the story it just wasn't the case...

But I am glad, we see a glimpse of Chilbong possible future partner and its meet-cute, but hoping its not a liking her coz she is similar to Najung situation. But that he likes her for her.

I will miss the gang, Haitai, Samcheonpo, Yoonjin, Binggrae... Appa and Omma...

I will be sad to let this drama go(but yay for 2 part special this week!) but I am satisfied, it been a while I had watched something that touched me this much, I cried, I laughed, I feel their pain and sorrow, their worries and fear, they little happiness and I grew with them...

And I am also glad all the mystery are solved... Oppa is Kim Jae Joon, Shiwon really did open the door for Oppa. Oppa telling Omma that he took up neurosurgery( I sniffed so hard). And all the other little mystery...

And Oppa trying to win Appa was hilarious when he commits more and more blunders... Lol so hard... see Show made me nuts, alternating between laughing and crying. But I love it!

And I can't choose the between AM 1997 or AM 1994, both have their flaws and are amazing in their own way. Though age wise I am closer to AM 1997 but feeling wise, I kinda relate more to AM 1994. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. The sweetest thing indeed.

Thanks for the final recap, GF! The last couple paragraphs really complemented my own thoughts. I think that Reply 1994 (and Reply 1997) had their greatest moments in the narration of the characters reminiscing about their past and paying tribute to the 90's. Still enjoyed the show even though I hated the trolling (and wanted Chilbong as the husband). I hope a show similar to this one about the 2010's is created in the distant future, so I can watch it and reminisce about my youth.

More than the husband-guessing-dragged-too-long...the slice of life captured in this drama is one of the best I've seen....AM 1994 is simply brilliant and fantastic!

NJ and T are renting out CB's apt? That's like my husband and I renting out a house from a man who loved me for years. Who is more handsome and successful. I asked my husband if he would ever be okay with such a situation and he glared at me. So yeah.

Chilbong was a main character. Anywhere you go on information on this show it says he's a main character. So why was his story butchered like that? a girlfriend at the last minute, we never get to see his parents. Yoojin, Samcheonpo and the other boarders were supporting characters, secondary characters but their stories were better developed. This is not making sense. Man, this is like how Jacob in Twilight was given Bella's (first love's) daughter as compensation at the last moment.

I think this is where the story is getting lost from a viewers perspective because we invested in the character and the husband game too much.

The theme and narrative story of this drama for Na-jung / Oppa is the progression and growth on their relationship while it is also a story of country individual journey and venture into the city and their experience that leads to their growth in the big city.

If looking it through narrative lens of what the story is telling, then one can see that CB was not the main lead. It is the same way in a narrative sense on Answer Me 1997 (thus we knew Taewoong was not the husband because he was not the lead)

CB wasn't the main lead but it appears that he was the second male lead. And not many dramas choose to resolve the story of the second male lead and give him a perfect happy ending so I don't fault the show much for that. I am surprised that they made him such a great character but gave him an ending that is typically given to a less popular lead. Also surprising is that the other secondary characters got more fleshed out stories. Oh well...I'll never forget his awesomeness lol I'm glad he got the family he deserves though. :)

it's not husband race afterall. we saw how appa called the groom ugliest of all to suk suk. we saw T-NJ lovey dovey. they make over 60 minutes per episode and yet, alot hole they leave to the show. it's like 2 splitted drama that rushed to get into one and just wanna gain rating in the end. i think TvN has change into this kind of tv right know.

As far as i know, most of TvN drama has a great story although the cast didn't famous. How i rooted for flower boy next door. And in the first place i hope AM 1994 gonna do those great story and explain everything clear like AM 1997 since it has more episode and duration.
But, what we get, big ZERO. they failed indeed for me

Woke up and feeling okay with Nareki being endgame. I've decided to embrace it, flaws and all. No matter what, it's still a better emotional investment than the Heirs.
But I keep on thinking about the injustice that Chilbong had to face. And the compensation wasn't even that satisfying. My heart just breaks every single time. I can't believe the writer actually did this to Chilbong. He was such a good, kind soul who L O V E D Najeong. His only fault was that he loved the wrong girl. His happy ending should've come sooner. Ep 20 should've been the denouement already. Then they could have space to show how Chilbong gradually accepted the fate of his pure love. (Random thought: pure and poor sound the same. That pretty much sums up Chilbong's character)
Instead of baseball metaphors, they should've used basketball ones. That was the neutral ground. And that would've made a lot more sense for Najeong's character(who just stopped liking bball all of a sudden)
I was so upset I actually wanted a spin-off for Chilbong but now I'm totally against it bc who knows what else the writer would butcher.
Also, it says in Wikipedia that Reply 1997 was written by 3 people. Guess we know why 1994 is different then...

LONG FEELS AHEAD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Okay I'm really trying hard to accept everything. I'm trying to be a good citizen of dramaland and I don't want to be called pathetic so I have to let out all these feelings to make me feel at ease.

First, okay Trash is the husband. I accept defeat. No matter how many times I flip the universe, It will always be the same since the writers already decided about it. Even though how stupid they are to make things like this and ignoring the viewer's intelligence.

I was even hurt when other fans said that CB is a creeper and from the start Na Jung really never loved him. It really hurts so much, I can't even sleep last night. He is such a creeper, he keeps on following Na Jung and he is a burden to Nareki couple. Seriously people, don't rub it in our face, you're too much and you're too cruel to say that.

To the Writers:

-You said this will be different than the original one. But you just made another shtty story where childhood first love will always come true.
-What's with the baseball metaphors? The 10,000 hour rule? The Yogi Bera saying? That MIRACLE EXISTS? For once in my life, you let me believed in those things. You let me believe that I will find a person who will love me more than his self. That hardwork and perseverance will equate to success and happiness... but what happened? you just crushed my soul into dust. You just crushed everybody's hopes and I'm afraid to say that a lot of us will never believe in those things anymore.
-What's with the 2013 scenes?! The coffee scene? Why the hell did you allow CB to take a nap in the master's bedroom if he is not the husband? What's inside the delivery box? You just fill in 10% I REPEAT 10% of the 2013 scenes and even so a lot of them doesn't make any SENSE. --The first episode, where did her husband came from? where are the children during housewarming party? with all the baseball books in those shelves what the hell are they?
-In concern with the 1994-2002 timeline. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN INCLUDING THE INCONSISTENT TIME JUMPS. STARTING FROM EPISODE 1.
-What happened in the first week of JULY 1995?!?!
-What happened to Lee Sang Min fangirling? How come we didn't see his real face? And the Akaraka book, what is its history? the magic eye book? Did CB really met Na Jung before? And how come you labeled him as the FIRST SHINCHON BOARDER in episode 0 when basically he is NOT A BOARDER AT ALL.
-Those unfinished scenes??? THE NYE'S SCENE WHAT WAS NA JUNG'S REACTION? The second confession scene? The Sampoong Dept. Store collapse... what happened after they hug? why is NaJung so worried? What triggered her to hug him?
-In the wedding scene, where the hell is TRASH'S BROTHER IF HE IS THE HUSBAND? and how come you changed the groom's parents? where are his colleagues? what happened to Kim Jae Hyung the baseball guy? why is invited at all? Kim Min Jong? Why did he sang in the wedding? AND WHERE ARE THEY IN THE WEDDING PICTURE? EVEN SOOK SOOK IS NOT IN THE PICTURE FOR GOD SAKE? IS EVEN PART OF THIS FAMILY?
-WHAT THE FVCK HAPPENED TO THE VOICE OVERS? Everything are words of encouragement and HOPE BUT YOU JUST CRUSHED IT. CAN YOU HEAR ME? CRUSHED IT WRITER CRUSHED IT!!
-Director, you said CB's name is not Kim Sung Joon? Huh? Huh? Huh? HUH?!??!
-Where the hell is CB's family then? of all the characters, YOU JUST GAVE HIM THE MOST PITIFUL STORY EVER. I WOULDN'T EVEN DARE TO DO...

I'm usually a very cool-headed drama watcher and I rarely pick one ship over another. Second lead syndrome? Shipping war? Not even in my vocabulary. I know nothing about those and truthfully can't be bothered. I watch dramas purely for the story. But this drama, I swear...

One of the reasons why I let myself to be on Team Chilbongie right from the very beginning is all the 2013 scenes (the other being Yoo Yeon Seok's heartfelt performance), which is why I feel very disappointed with the ending, because it is just chock full of inconsistencies. And inconsistency is one writing flaw that I can't overlook. Knowing that this writer has written the perfectly detailed AM1997, she should have done better than this.

I screamed with joy when they introduced us to Oppa's parents because I actually went back and checked the 2002 wedding scene just before they were about to enter the hall, and found that the supposed groom's parents look nothing like Trash's parents. Chilbongie has hope! And so, trusting the writer, I nurtured this hope along with Chilbongie, wishing that Na Jeong would finally turn around and accept his heart. Imagine how cheated I felt, when suddenly the groom's parents changed face in Episode 21. Yes, Trash's mom passed away, and so he had an aunt to stand in, that I can perfectly understand.
It's in the narrative. BUT HOW DID THIS RANDOM AJUSSHI SUDDENLY TURN INTO YONG SHIK? PLASTIC SURGERY??!!

Sorry for the rant. I'm a bit on edge because l could hardly sleep last night, hurting for Chilbongie and furious for being tricked all this time. I love the drama for its little touching moments, the comedy and the heart-warming feelings it gave me, and for that I'm forever grateful to the writer. But all these trolling that amount to nothing? And no explanation given? Not cool at all.

Oof, my heart broke for Chilbongie when I saw him crying all alone in that stadium. At that moment I have never cried so hard for a fictional character in my life. Props to Yoo Yeonseok for giving Chilbong so much life, he poured his heart and soul into that character. It's a pity that his characterization slightly got butchered in the remaining episodes, and he didn't get the character development that he deserved. Would've been nice to fully see him move on from Na-jung, reconcile with his parents, and meet a nice woman to settle down with. His closure was lacking in comparison to the rest of the cast.

Even though I was rooting for Chilbong throughout the drama, I knew he wouldn't have been the husband, though it would've been a great twist in my opinion. In the first half of the drama, I'd say his chances were 50/50 and a reversal would've been possible up until Trash reciprocated his feelings for Na-jung and they began dating. That sealed the deal that they would be end game (and the mystery should've ended). I am happy that Najung and Trash got their happy ending though, they deserved it. Go Ara and Jungwoo did a great job in their respective roles, and I'm glad they're gaining more popularity as well.

While the show was beautifully done and all the characters were so realistic and amicable, my only disappointment and gripe would be the writing itself. Writer Lee made so many missteps in terms of character development, in which she sacrificed in order to preserve the mystery and that's a huge disappointment for me. I wish she had wrapped up the mystery earlier for the sake of our main characters, I wanted to see Trash and Najung work on their relationship problems and develop better/more as a couple especially after that break up. I wanted to see more of Chilbong outside of his love for Najung and baseball after he had decided to move on and let go. The remaining episodes should've focused around that instead of dragging the mystery on and yanking around the audience until the VERY END.

The ending itself wasn't a huge disappointment, on my part it just had to do with the individual closure that the characters were given.

boy am I glad I avoid soompi like the plague. but I can't agree with you about DB. "for the most part" is an overstatement. Take a look at the first page of comments. 80-90% are far from articulate and respectful. It is like a cesspool of verbal garbage -- to put it in words those people are likely to understand since they are wailing about the show being "trash" and "crap". makes me sick just being here any longer and the fact that most of these people don't even have proper arguments to back up their grating rants makes me realize it's futile to try and engage in a sensible conversation. In all seriousness, "this drama could have been different!" "nice message: hard work never pays off" "Trash is a lazy bully who makes his wife collect packages" -- are the best arguments they can make? Never mind the fact that NJ had to wait hand and foot on CB when he knew she was hurting inside and busy with work. He wasn't even paralyzed or anything. AND she did it out of guilt rather than love. He still took advantage of her. Meanwhile NJ goes downstairs to collect one package and "oh my god, girl you are going to suffer for the rest of your life!!!" Of course, with those clear prior examples of lacking in the logical department, I can't expect them to get the meaning behind the text and why Najung rushed to visit Oppa and why they reconciled. So i'm just going to designate this comments section severely plague infested and put it on the "must avoid" list.

We can agree to disagree. There is definitely a fringe element behind the Chilbong character that leads to Trash or show-bashing but it doesn't represent all the commentary here. Like others I really liked and felt for the Chilbong character but could recognize the endgame and also appreciate Trash's development as a son, boyfriend, med student-resident-neurosurgeon, husband, father, half-man, half-beast. He was endearing and even more so than the other lead Na-Jung (who is also awesome) was well developed as a character.

What a lot of commentators may have wanted (from my pov since I don't speak for everyone) was not an NJ-CB marriage but a tightening up of storytelling. Cut out these latter Chilbong-centric episodes and he probably could have gotten to the same place (because let's be honest, there was a love line, not a true triangle) earlier. Samcheonpo had less episodes dedicated to him but I felt like his growth was more gradual and thus more satisfactory.

I love the characters and the little moments and the goats. The directors and actors did such a stellar job bringing life to the characters (hello Do-Hee is awesome) and I feel this way while still standing by my above statements.

Really, a hundred thumbs up for this one. And I really respect that you're still trying; I think a lot of us gave up long ago. I left myself once it became clear there was no point trying to have a real discussion. And now that I've come back to check up and see if there's been any sea change...yep, the environment is still as bewildering (and ridiculously toxic) as ever. I feel like at this point we have to just set aside our protective instincts about this show and just accept that these guys just weren't watching the same drama as us, and to feel sad for that fact. But then it's like, you read these comments and it's so hard to hold back. I'm okay with people lashing out (even if it's kind of gross), because it's the internet, and that's what happens, and they're totally entitled to be disappointed as fans. (Also, some of the Trash bashing is kind of lulzy, because, I just, I can't. What were they watching?) What gets me is when they take it out on the show. It's all these generally (and sometimes openly) hack critiques of the show itself based on their disappointment over one character's storyline (or really, the fact that one character didn't "win" the girl). Rather than critiquing these critiques (because I've learned my lesson by now), I'd just like to say that some of them are obviously disingenuous and really pretty disrespectful to the work the crew and the writer and the PD and actors (including YYS) put into making this.

(warning: long tangent is long.)

I don't know. Like, a couple weeks back, the main line was that CB's character development was lacking because it was all about NJ and he wasn't allowed to develop on his own. But the minute Chilbong's storyline or Chilbong the character is read without NJ/CB goggles (or it reaches its natural conclusions, at which point even the goggles won't save you), a lot of people get really upset (which is fine) and feel betrayed (which is also fine, if a bit bewildering) and then dress up this betrayal as objective critique (which is not fine). Like, they won't accept any NJ/CB moment as other than NJ/CB (that is, as being about CB himself). Like, say, the trip to SCP being about CB coming to terms with the desperation of his one sided love. Or just generally, both CB's love for and getting over NJ as being about his struggle with loneliness and desire for family, instead of this very specific romantic narrative that they have mapped onto the drama. Both moments are more about his relationship with and view of himself, wherein his desperation/loneliness conflicts with his self-respect and self image, and they're lovely character moments. These moments haven't been disrespected by the drama; if anything, they're being disrespected by fans who want them to be something they're not (and who aren't willing to value them as CB moments unless they're CB/NJ moments). The whole time his character was so well acted and has had so many fulfilling and great moments and development, mostly dealing with his fear and finally acceptance of rejection (and wrapped up in that, his relationship with his maturing understanding of acceptance/rejection (family, NJ ,etc)), and real closure (not to mention a great and loving send off) in finding real and meaningful family and friends. But his own fans won't accept it because it's not what they wanted.

Also, hope you don't mind if I just tack this on here at the end? I'm scared to wade any further into this...

Ack, didn't realize I'd been cut off...Anyway, really hope you don't mind me tacking this on.

It isn't only this refusal to accept CB's storyline as a character story instead of a romance that bothers me. Rather, it's the general tendency to resent and feel betrayed by dramatic subtlety that upsets me. I mean, one of the best things about this drama has been its subtlety, its refusal to privilege the explicit over implicit, and its trust in us as viewers to read it at least a bit closer, and reach a more nuanced understanding of what's going on rather than being told straight out. Like, in the first half, we're not told that Trash has feelings for NJ; we're subtly shown that he might (and increasingly, that he does). Or, BG's story is about confusion over sexuality, showing his anxieties and fears through his struggle with self identification rather than imposed sexual identities of straight/gay (and although it's never said, it's clear that ending up in a heterosexual relationship doesn't negate his queer feelings for Trash, anymore than it makes him identify as straight over queer). (although that being said, I won't defend the red car troll. That was queer baiting, straight up, and one moment where the writers were carried away with their own cleverness. And it was offensive and gross). It wasn't that the drama wasn't telling us a very specific story; it's that unlike most Kdramas, it often chose to show us, through little moments of ambiguity, metaphors, soundtrack, etc, rather than just coming out and telling us outright. As someone who has watched a ton of western TV for a long time now, this isn't exactly revolutionary storytelling, but in the context of dramaland this show has been pretty genre defying and all the more awesome for it.

I also love that it didn't force dramaland's gendered ideology of dating down our throats (The man must go to ridiculous lengths to prove his devotion to the girl! The man cannot be confused about his feelings (and we cannot be confused about his feelings either)! The man must confess immediately, pursue her relentlessly, and be willing to sacrifice all other parts of his life for her! The girl must be wooed! The girl must end up with who we want her to end up with, not who she wants to end up with! Dating must be romantic! Romance=big gestures! For men, love relationships are about earning and deserving! For women it's about...being the lead?) and subverts so many BS drama tropes (ratcheted up misunderstandings, interfering second leads, and therein, constructed love triangles warping story structure and manufacturing drama where realistically there shouldn't be any). In Na-jung, we had a heroine who was always upfront about her feelings for Trash, never led the second lead on, and consistently flouted Kdrama dating ideology. In Trash, we had the most refreshing male lead of any Kdrama I've ever seen, who was like a real dude, messy and kind of gross sometimes, and just as swoon worthy even when he wasn't being held to gendered expectations. In Chilbong, we had second lead whose storyline actually wasn't about the girl, but about Chilbong the character.

I guess I just really feel like we weren't watching the same show as the majority of international fans (though Korea agrees with us! Vindication). This is one of the best Kdramas I've seen and I was so emotionally invested in it that it's sad to see so many posts taking a giant, unjustified shit on it.

You're being dismissive. A lot of fans are clearly disappointed by the dragged out husband-mystery at the expense of character development. Most fans just wanted proper closure for CB character. Instead, he was used as a mere plot device right up to the final episode, just so the husband-mystery could be maintained. So in the end, the lovely story was pretty marred.

No, you're being dismissive of all the fans of this show who didn't love Chilbongie with the same intensity that you did. We wanted to talk about the small moments, the sweet ending, the friendships and the fun time that we had watching Answer Me 1994. We want to praise the performance and mourn that these wonderful characters will no longer be with us. We want to talk about this show on a whole and this episode in particular. But who want to battle such negativity and outright meanness to do so?

Do you realize how much it sucks to see the entire first page of comments filled with people complaining about how their poor Chilbongie was shafted and how terrible this show is? Do you realize how unfriendly it is for everyone else? So, don't for a second think that being the loudest means that everyone agrees with you. Most of us are just too tired to try to argue with closed minds.

But just because I can't seem to help myself... who the hell says that Chilbongie wound up with a bad ending?! He got wanted he wanted most in the world... a family who loves him and will always stand by him!! AND he got to keep playing baseball his whole life! The lonely boy did not grow up to be a lonely man.

seriously EVERYTHING you said! So much negativity because of one darned character who is only pitiful now because his fans choose to see him as pitiful. Even Yoo Yeon Suk will probably be disappointed seeing how his so called fans are writing off this drama that he has worked so hard on as being "trashy". Despite his character's growth and how far he has come now, he will always be viewed by these fans as "the boy who didn't get the girl." The writers made plenty of efforts (going above and beyond -- and to the detriment of the main characters imo) to give him a satisfactory resolution so maybe in the eyes of these fans, YYS failed as an actor to show that character growth.

The first page of comments has nothing to do with my comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I'm not in no way endorsing this ridiculous hate-on for Trash. If anything, his character was also left hung out to dry. He was also deserving of more cute scenes with NJ.

And at no point did I flame any hate for Trash character. You come off closed minded when you make blanket statements addressing CB shippers as one mass group. Each fan has their own opinions and equally Trash fans haven't been the most courteous either.

Most CB fans did not even care for CB being the husband in the end. Ultimately, I personally, am saddened at the rushed ending and the writer using CB as a plot device right up to the last two episodes. It also meant less time given to develop other side character's stories. Most of the series time was spent in the past scenes so you can't do a a few happy scenes in the final hour to compensate for the prior lack of development. And yes, he received the love of his boarding family and a potential new love (which was filled in with a few scenes) but the writer made the choice to give him a a one-sided love all series long.

You don't get it. So I'm going to yell it: I'M NOT TALK ABOUT TRASH-BASHING!!! I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT SHIPPING!! I'M TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE BASHING *THE* *ENTIRE* *SHOW*!! AND YES MOST OF THEM ARE CHILBONGIE FANS!!

It's the entire show we can't talk about because the entire show has been dismissed because Chilbongie didn't get the ending that his fans wanted for him.

When I say Chilbongie fans, I mean just that. Fans of the character, not the CB/NJ shippers. They are two separate (though somewhat overlapping) categories. You are right that this has nothing to do with him not getting the girl and everything to do with the fact that Answer Me 1994 wasn't The Chilbongie Show.

And no Chilbongie does "deserve more" cute scenes with Na-jung. You wanted them? Sure, fine. Disappointed you didn't get them? Well, of course, you are! It's only natural. But that doesn't meant those scenes are deserved or warranted. Not when Na-jung only ever saw Chilbongie as a friend-who-is-like-family.

0

"but the writer made the choice to give him a a one-sided love all series long."

Because that was his story. There are tons of Korean dramas where the second lead gets over this feelings but doesn't end up with anyone else. This isn't new. Here, he is married and we witness his meet-cute.

0

@ Quaggy. regarding your point: 'And no Chilbongie does “deserve more” cute scenes with Na-jung. You wanted them? Sure, fine. Disappointed you didn’t get them? Well, of course, you are! But no matter which way you guys try to phrase it, it appears that the only way CB's character development would have been satisfactory for you would be for CB's "hard work" to pay off and him to have gotten the girl in the end. If it was really about a happy ending for him then it was pretty darn satisfying and touching to see him - the lonely soul who had an emptiness in his heart due to lack of parental love -- to have gained a family who is always there for him without him even asking them to be. Despite the distance and what they personally went through (CB and Najung), his friends kept in touch with him and cared for him. He gained a mother and a father, friends and even a "hyung" in Trash. Did you notice how Trash even brought him side-dishes from home after the surgery? And he got a wife too. They even put a potential face to the wife by showing that encounter with Jung Yumi. Like it or not, CB was not one of the two main characters. If any of the side characters should be crying about poor development or resolution, it should probably be Binggeurae or even Yoonjin. CB said in his voiceover that all he had before Najung was Baseball so that was what they focused on. If they had just shown more dialogueless scenes of CB brooding in his empty apartment, the same fans would probably crying about why they are making CB so pathetic and miserable.
Poor closure? he got scenes of his life before and after leaving for America and meeting his future wife. HT's and BG's story had less closure than CB's.We never saw them with their wives in the finale. In fact HT didn't even get married. Even SC and YJ didn't get any scenes of happily married wedded bliss. For the matter, even Najung and Trash didn't really get any indulgent happily married scenes except for the one - which was necessary to establish that they were married now. So the fact that CB got so much attention in the finale was, i thought, something that the CB fans would appreciate; but obviously i thought wrong since even that isn't enough it seems.

Actually CB was headlined as one of the main characters and the writers used the shipping interest to extend the love-triangle for higher ratings. There was no need to continue with it from the last few episodes. I am not discounting the love of his boarding family and potential new love. What I am saddened by is the poor character development. At 1.5 hour episodes they had ample time to develop this new love interest for CB and show more NJ/Trash married-couple scenes in those latter episodes. Plus, show us more side character scenes. Instead they made CB character mope around and drag out the most ridiculous love-triangle all over again to the final episode, all in the name of revealing the BIG husband suprise.

Also, like others mentioned, CB got to continue playing baseball successfully. Did CB fans forget the part where he injured his shoulder and his back and was on the brink of ending his career depending on when he got surgery and if it was successful? People should be happy for him with this point alone. He gets to continue doing what he loves along with finding a true family and wife.

In all honesty he got a lot more than many second leads who didn't get the girl. Chilbong started as a guy who only had his cousin and very little family affection to speak of but ended with a group of lifelong friends who were there when he was lonely (the emails during his time in the states) and in his time of need (his hospital stays, the night he flew back from the United States for surgery, during his recovery) and parents that treat him like their on (Najung's mom and dad). I think in a lot of ways it took losing Najung for good for him to realize just how much care and affection he had from the others and appreciate those friendships more. If anything I am just sad that they didn't give him that closure earlier because had they done it, we would be able to see more scenes of them being friends and seeing him process the loss of Najung and genuinely move on which he apparently did by 2013.

I feel the exact same way. Though the show was not perfect, it's going to hold a place in my heart forever. I loved every second of it, rough edges and all. It's honestly very saddening to see people react this way, and especially more so when they pose their subjective opinions and interpretations as being concrete facts. I understand people being disappointed, heartbroken; I'm pretty sure I would be experiencing the same emotions if Trash Oppa was not the husband. But shitting on the writer, actors, and director and calling the whole show worthless and other insulting names is really reaching a whole different level of disrespectful.

He was a main character, and yes second leads are considered main characters. He was ultimately a second lead what he got in his role and his ending is far more than what second lead usually gets in a drama.

I the essence of the shipping was is that people who shipped for Oppa saw only Him and NJ as the main leads so their story of course would end in that manner. So when CB got his ending it was satisfactory because he was a secondary character.

For people who shipped CB, saw him as a main lead. Saw his as the third part in the love triangle. This was on part of the show creators. He was build as a main lead. Even in the posters, his picture is as big as Go Ara and Jung Woo. So when he was regulated as plot devise and had an ending that was worse than a second lead, made CB shippers upset. If the writers could have had a better ending for him I don't think people would have been so upset. They didn't even give the name of his wife. Really, just too much for people who really like CB's character. For people who didn't like his character or didn't care for him it wouldn't.

What is worse is that the people who shipped for Oppa (not everyone but some vocal people) can't even see their words really do hurt. The vitriol that some people can spout is amazing. That goes for CB shippers. Sometimes compassion goes out the door when there are no faces to be seen. Would any of say those hateful things if were talking face to face? Is it that there is such anonymity connected to the internet, that we feel that we can forget about politeness and consideration. People's emotions were invested in this drama, shouldn't we try to be a little nice.

Errrr the posters do not show CB being main. The posters even have JW and GR with couple clothes AND using the same body pose. LOL

Each character also had their own poster - so I don't get ''CB was the main lead.''

He was to be honest one of the ''MAIN CAST'' and he did have more screen time than HT, BG, CP and YJ characters.

But fans love to complain;

If you go to the Reply 1994 website, there is a compilation with all of the individual poster. On the very top it is CB, NJ, and Oppa. Where CB and NJ are matching. They all have the same sized pictures. Then there rest of the cast is below with smaller pictures.

I am not complaining, I am just stating what the production company put out there.

As a chilbonger, I am thankful for your post, to allow me to see these clues, which were much more subtle, set up in the beginning for NJ and T. It does help me to get some real sense of closure for the show. Maybe the intense reaction from international fans are partly due to our lack of access to these cultural references that are seriously way subtle. And we tend to pick up on clues that are more universally accessible.

What I cannot forgive however, is how the production team clearly toyed with the feelings of viewers for the sake of ratings. For non-CB shippers, much of the symbolism between NJ and CB gets lost, just like how the clues that you have pointed out were lost on me when I was watching the drama. For us, these symbolisms were repeated throughout the drama at critical points of the narrative, and I think that is why it was so hard, even now, to surrender our hope that perhaps, a miracle twist can happen, but in reality, it was never even a possibility. Just echoing some of the sentiments of more sensible, and I think, the overwhelming majority of CB shippers is that, we were given just as much, if not more, clues and hints at the possibility of CB with NJ, and our feelings were manipulated in this manner and dragged on towards the bitter end, for the sole reason of keeping the mystery and the ratings game.

I mean, why have this super meaningful NYE reunion scene with the BGM and title reveal of "should I say I love you again?" At that exact moment, while the song "start" was revealed hours before, which was on the outset NJ's song for pops, but perfectly echoed CB's feelings for NJ, with the song framed by ticking sounds, and the MV ending sequence with NJ at a neutral place between CB and T, if you really wanted to say that CB really had no chance, and his love for NJ was really about his loneliness and need for family. Why was that necessary?

And to others who say that CB was given a satisfactory ending, you probably weren't nearly as emotionally invested in his character. I agree that his ending made sense for his character, but we were shafted as viewers as to how that ending was DEVELOPED. When you love a character so much that his heart becomes your heart, and his hurt becomes your hurt, and his desires become your desires, you want to SEE him happy in a well developed way. We saw with every other character how their own relationship with the significant other developed, but we were only given a HINT that there is maybe someone who sees CB for who he is and loves him with full devotion, and that she happens to be awesome and NOT NJ #2. Instead, we were only shoved with the results and told to accept this as a fact, along with some really insensitive acts from NJ and T and pretty mean jabs from the rest of the gang that just rubs salt in our wounds, without given the proper space and time to see and journey with him in this progression. (Mad props to YYS for making this sequence emotionally believable given how little time was developed to it). I do love that the friends barged in his house like real family would, but these are the same friends that forgot his birthday AND THEN went on to brag about being on TV instead of making it up to him. Sigh. In the drama, CB was given 2 years to heal, and maybe that was possible for him, but as viewers, we were given like 2 minutes to make that transition. (To help you understand how we feel, remember how Nareki fans felt and responded to the 2 minute...

That's it? I hate this drama just the way one hates one's ex after finding out he's cheating on you and I hate myself for loving this show, giving it the benefit of the doubt, and wasting 11 weeks of my time on it. I don't give a damn about NJ or Oppa but CB, how could u do that to him, its the finale and I saw him crying I just wanted break something, then they just brought in a girl whom we know nothing about and have her behave like NJ so he can fall in love all over again? He is supposed to be moving on, why is he falling in love with someone just like NJ? That's not moving on, its hanging on, relationships like that never work out. Poor CB so I guess he's forever a bachelor, if show wanted to portray him as lonely then it should have been done earlier and the cure should have been prescribed earlier. So its all forgive and forget so easily in dramaland I guess, I know CB is nice and all but the birthday issue from the last episode is still so fresh in my mind and I can't find it in myself to forgive them. Well CB was pointed out too that he was too nice. Finale:- Not what I watched this show for

I dont understand why people keep saying that chilbong didnt get the character development he deserved. He was only a second lead what did you expect? His character was and had always been flat so there wasnt much to develop with him, nothing much to work with.People who say that are just butthurt because he didnt get with Na jung in the end lol.

Yes Chilbong, for a long time was flat and underdeveloped in regards to issues outside of his love for Najung, but I think the biggest and only development that came out of his character had to do with the relationships he built with the boarding house gang. That was it. The opportunities that the writer had, in order to fully develop Chilbong more were there.

His absentee parents issue, his life/career abroad, him moving on from Najung, him finding love in someone else, and etc etc. All of that was dismissed and/or rushed.

The possibilities in developing his character were endless and the writer had the ultimate choice to develop him but she chose not to. Maybe that was what she was aiming for? But being a second lead does not mean that he shouldn't get any character development, especially considering that the side characters (BG, HT, SCP, YJ) all got their very own satisfactory endings/arcs.

So yes, I'm disappointed that his character got shafted aside like that like he was just a plot device, but I'm not mad or sad that he didn't end up with Najung. The end couple has nothing to do with why I'm bitter about his individual ending.

I'm a cb shipper but I don't let that cloud my viewing experience of the show. I'm not butt hurt that he didn't end up with najung. I have never thought of him as a second lead because the ensemble cast was of the same level, no 1st 2nd or 3rd lead. It's just because of the love triangle that we're automatically thinking that there's a first and second lead.

Saying that his character was always flat is like saying that you haven't watch the same drama we did. He's a child of divorce, where both parents can't even visit him when he need them the most but despite that, he didn't show sadness and kept bottling it up inside until he finally realized that he was really lonely and that najung filled up that loneliness he never knew he had, they could have work something with this because it is truly sad that he lived knowing that he wasn’t that much loved. It was sad that not even his closest friends knew his birthday after knowing each other for years, he considered them, the whole boarding house, his family.

He's a famous baseball player who is at times dim because he focused more on baseball than anything else. He didn't just became like that because he was well off but because he worked hard, he persevered, he did everything he could to achieve his dreams, that's why it's not easy for him to give up. There are a lot of aspects of his character that could have been developed but he was relegated to a mere plot device for the sake of the husband mystery.

Believe me, each one of them were on a level of their own and paid accordingly as well. But no matter how CB fans word it, there's always main characters, second leads and side characters in any drama, movie or book. It's time you guys accept which role CB filled (second lead) and as such, is either the catalyst for many bad things (as is the role of many second leads in a kdrama) or a nice good guy who rarely ever gets the main girl but could end up helping and becoming her friend.
The writers dealt with his parents divorce earlier on when he first arrived on screen and short of bringing his parents back together, I don't understand what else everyone wants; it's the case of having divorced parents and that doesn't mean that he will get happiness to compensate for his lack of parental presence (plus his Mom loves him as we witnessed in her message to him when he missed her wedding); that rarely happens even in real life. Not even a girl will fill that hole!
I think a lot of people has forgotten the first half of the drama and needs to re watch it now that everything is over; I think they will have a better understanding.
The only thing I would have liked is the writers bringing jung yumi for the whole final episode and showing how they met again and more interactions that will show her interest in him.
Honestly, until the last two episodes, CB Only looked at NJ and wasn't even friends with the other crews; I liked that he was finally assimilated with the others. About his birthday, his cousin should have known that even if the others didn't.
I know a lot will argue that CB was always there for NJ, but all those instances were mainly for his benefit and am not saying he couldn't have been there for her out of the goodness of his heart but those good deeds were always tainted by his need of her and unfortunately, his actions only matter if she cared. I am sure she likes him a lot and he may have had a chance if in her eyes, no one like Trash existed; she just doesn't love him and even all the times we were confused as to NJ's feeling in certain situations, she only ever showed emotions to Trash situations and only someone you love can hurt your heart.

Does Korea have, for lack of a better word "art dramas". I feel like part of the reason I feel torn is that part of Reply 1994 was trying to be a equivalent of a slice of life art movie and part of it was trying to fit into the Korean drama mold for high ratings. I am torn because a lot of the things I wish this drama would have done would have probably made it less popular but would have felt more authentic. Which I'm guessing would have been the kiss of death???

Well, they have to pay the bills. The drama gets a lot of praise in Korea because it's not about a chaebol or birth secrets. It really just a slice-of-life drama. And while the husband game got quite annoying even to Koreans, it was an easier watch for them than the international fans because when Trash and Na Jung kissed, most already concluded they were the endgame. And informing the parents and getting engaged made that clearer. While it had more kissing scenes than most, it was still a very conservative drama. From what I've read, as much as they enjoyed Trash and Na Jung, they probably would have enjoyed it more without the mystery. Especially when it was clear there wasn't one and it became distracting. For example, they really enjoyed the Sam Chun Po- Yoon Jin couple. And wanted more stories that didn't center around romance.

I asked a question before of why CB and Na-Jung would not be as widely accepted in spite of the narrative, and the handful of responses that I got pretty much echoed what you said. They could have done with other scenarios that are non traditional, or Na-Jung possibly being conflicted about her feelings for both guys but that never happened. and by the Trash-NaJung kiss and engagement that pretty much sealed the deal for them. The local audiences, whether or not they prefer Trash or Chilbong at that point, already know they are endgame because of these scenarios and anything other than that ending is a misrepresentation of the drama and it's narrative.

I also think this is another possible explanation of why people have VERY different opinions on this drama, beyond the ugly shipping wars that happened. Not that it was all lost on me that CB is not going to get it with Na-Jung since she clearly did not waver towards him at all. Clearly though, the trolling worked on most audiences who are more open to alternate endings and could have been scenarios.

I completely get what you are saying. Maybe it would be the equivalent of an indie movie in the West. Except it wasn't. It tried to be subtle and mysterious but Korean dramas are not subtle and mysterious. Least of all with their love triangles.

I think the thing that threw me (who cheered for CB) was I actually figured hey, if their gonna choose a mystery format they have to choose a romance trope that would make such a structural choice viable. But they didn't. So they had to created a 'pretend' mystery by withholding critical information that hurt character and plot development.

If the romantic narrative was not compatible with the husband game being a mystery it was a poor production choice as we see now with the last episodes turning into a melodrama and creating a certain level of uneven characterization amongst the three leads.

Firs, I have never seen 1997 so have nothing to compare it to.
I didnt get any of the pop culture or timeline references cuz I am in my 20s only now making 90s the decade I was born, yet there was something in the very first episode of coming to the big city and getting lost.
Even with google maps, I got lost on my first day to work :D

That scene and all those boaders, being strangers, then depending on each other to become friends and to feel like home, it has my heart.

Then came the love triangle, despite swooning over every thing Oppa did at start which made Na Jung nervous, him being just physically close, hugging to sleep, and despite getting completely swept away by Chil Bongie later on and becoming giddy and giggling at his smile, the love story fizzled out.

From heart it turned to head where I had to pull my hairs out and yet there was no conclusion.

The frustrating thing is I get what they were trying to say, you love who you love. You cant choose. There was not one moment where Na Jung wanted to be with Chil Bong. Yes, she picked her jaw from the ground when she saw him half naked at first, but who wouldn't?
And she has always liked her oppas. Its who she is. (Her screaming at basket ball game scene that was replayed at end killed me on how we never saw that side of her after the first couple of episodes).

They had a story on how everyone grew up for a decade and their relationships.

Instead of the gem they had, they made it a mystery show which fuelled fan wars (the only time I have seen this much is Harry-Hermione and Ron-Hermione shippers years ago) and just plain headache.

I dont think anyone is missing the show, people either ranting or feeling bad or any other emotions other than missing it because quite frankly, am extremely glad its over. Which is a sad thing cuz a show of this much heart has to be missed.

Despite knowing it all, I saw the final wedding that had a groom with a head feeling like its a staged drama. Na Jung's smile and her happiness, I cant feel it. Maybe my heart still hurts for chil bongie(my wife will be angry and crash falling with Jung Yumi???? - This is what a happy ending you give for him SHOW? , you could have convinced me that he really is happy now, not lonely anymore), or maybe at one point the romantic tension I used to feel with Na Jung whenever Oppa was near just fizzled out that I felt seeing siblings hug and cry, I dont know!!!

I know they are happy and my hand did go to my heart when Oppa confessed I love you. But show, something feels off.

So I am gonna forget this love traingle ever existed(hard thing to do, I know) and all am gonna remember is, my things are mine to mine is yours , to the Seo Taji's toilet seat that Samcheonpo stole even though he never understood it, to Bingurrae's testing if love does exist, to chil bongie trying to say mother and father and loving the way it felt on his lips, to Haitai's first love which made him silent whenever he was blabbering, to the hand made mittens Dad gave to oppa and to Na Jung standing on sidelines and screaming her head off!

Thank you 1994, your slice of life made me smile and leave me raising my glasses to the 90s boarders even though thats a decade I am not a part of!

Omg Chilbong character was annoying, needy, and clingy. He was almost at the borderline at heading into creepy territory with his actions. All his actions were mostly for his sake which would probably head into the category of being a selfish lover if he had become one. If this was a girl character so many people would trash the character calling her too clingy etc.

she/he is not trashing CB character, she is just saying what it is. CB clinged onto NJ selfishly. This isn't a lie - he knew where NJ heart was but because of HIS feelings he couldn't let go, and always asked NJ to stay by him - even when he saw she was hurting - he still asked her to stay with him.

He had a one sided love for someone who didn't show ANY hints of seeing him more than a friend for over 6 years, always waiting for a chance he never had.

How is this not creepy? If not for YYS, people would say his character was creepy and pathetic. Imagine an older guy playing this role - look A1997 - TW character was pretty the same but fans called him disgusting and creepy lol lets be real here.

I wouldn't put it as harshly but in some ways I agree with you. On paper the Chilbong character comes off borderline obbsessive and with some deep seated insecurities which is why I am glad that they had YYS play him (he reminded me of Yul in Goong in some ways). Had another actor with less nuance played Chilbong I highly doubt that he would be as loved as he is. But with YYS's wonderful heartfelt and nuanced performance of Chilbong I can completely understand why people loved his character and felt for him the way they did. In a lot of ays I feel that the PD's were amazing in the casting because the actors' performances made you care about the characters far more than what could be imagined based on their character on paper.

What is so hard to understand..you can't force yourself to love someone. You can't pick..your heart does. Na Jeong has always loved Trash oppa..and as heartbreaking as it is that CB's love was unrequited that's how things happen in real life too.. what happened to him is so realistic. Sure, the writer trolled the viewers a bit..but anyone who is realistic enough should've predicted that Na Jeong's heart wouldn't change just because CB was the 'better' choice.
Even CB himself knew that Na Jeong won't pick him. He knew..he just clung onto her because he wasn't ready to let her go, because letting her go would make him realize how lonely he is.
Haven't you ever felt this way before? I am baffled that people couldn't appreciate how realistic the ending was.. Personally I loved it. Because i felt the way CB felt before..i think everyone has.
And who says CB didn't get his happy ending afterwards? He got his friends, he was successful(rich), he managed to get by without serious injuries, he married (so he must've LOVED the person) etc...
Loving Na Jung was an era in his life..it wasn't his ending. We have all had an unrequited love for someone. But that doesn't mean that we could not find happiness afterwards. In fact, often people realize the next love is true love...and the unrequited one was a lesson.

I feel like most people wanted Na Jung to pick CB just so he wouldn't end up being the heartbroken one..not because they were actually a great couple. Don't worry, CB got his happy ending too, he fell in love again.

And to end what i was trying to say here...Trash oppa and Na Jung were meant to be. Maybe some couldn't see it..but once you'll find your better half you'll understand.. they're just meant for each other. With their flaws and everything.

And let me also add..that personally i loved the show. The cast was more than perfect. In my mind they will always stay as a family from the show..and seeing the actors acting a different character will be hard for me from now on. They seemed so real.
Hope they stay friends in real life aswell.

Oh and whilst in a way i agree with people saying we should've seen CB's wife(him being happy etc)...in a way i understand why the writer didn't do so...
it was probably for those bittersweet feelings of his unrequited love to continue lingering..
of course, maybe they just ran out of time..but hopefully that's not it.
I don't believe that they didn't find his happiness important..i think the writer isn't that heartless.. they wanted us to continue feeling the bittersweet feelings with him..They wanted some viewers to feel sad, dissapointed and angry...and some to create their own happy ending for CB.
They wanted us to react to it with our own feelings..our own thoughts..
I really think that's it.

And if you ask me..that's what makes this drama so successful. The fact that it could evoke so many different emotions in people...
and that we could all relate.

Yes, I agree that Chilbong got his happy ending. It's just not the ending that many Chilbong-Najeong shippers wanted. As I wrote in my post above, by freeing himself of his one-sided love for Najeong, Chilbong was able to open himself to the others. In the end, he gained friends, family, and a wife :).

Love is indeed a sacrifice.

Chilbong loved Najeong for more than half a decade. He realized that love is not only thinking about your feelings, but also thinking about what the person you love feels. After watching the episode 20 for the second time, I came to a realization that Chilbong let her go because he loves her, and because love is sacrifice.

Lesson: The person you love's happiness will also be your happiness. If she likes someone, let her go if that's what makes her happy. Truly, love is not selfish. You love not for yourself.. you love because of that person and for her happiness. You let go though it's heartbreaking. That's love.

lol. Everything got deep. but seriously, this is what I realized on Chilbong's unrequited love.

I love what you said. Love is indeed putting the other person's happiness before your own. He may not have gotten the girl but the trade off was that by letting her go, he has reached a higher level of maturity and emotional growth. Sure he was hurt but time healed his wound and I'd like to think that because of experiencing that first love's pain, he became a better person and a better husband for his future wife.

Also, I love that he didn't become bitter towards Trash and Na Jung. He did not alienate himself from them and decided that theirs is a friendship worth keeping and holding on to. I loved him for taking that higher road. All's well that ends well.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually really enjoyed this whole series. Of course there were flaws like girlfriday and javabeans mentioned, but I definitely thought this was a solid series worth my time and investment in the characters and plot. And I realize that there is a big Team Chilbongie fan base out there, but if you were really Team Chilbongie, then you must have thought he was a solid, endearing, and important character in the series: not just some plot device. I guess I'm just tired of all the disappointed fans claiming he was used as a plot device because he really wasn't. I was Team Oppa from the start, but I definitely loved Chilbongie: his sincerity and tragic acceptance and resilience and abs and all. And in the end, it was the Shinchon family and their lovely moments that really mattered. And I loved them.

I agree, Chilbongie was more than just a plot device, and all credit to YYK's acting for that! I loved the way all of the characters were played, and I'll definitely keep an eye out for their future projects!

Who could forget the Dating Misadventures of Haitai? He and Samcheonpo hanging out at Space like inseparable Siamese twins? And the adorkable pairing of Samcheonpo and Smurf's Shorts? And the cute moments between Mom and Dad, still so lovey-dovey after years of marriage?

Instead of concentrating on 1 or 2 main leads like most drama set-ups, this show created so many memorable characters for me.

Glad I watched it. Gonna go and watch AM1997 now. Thanks to everyone for recommending this show to me!

Thank you for all your time and effort to provide us with the recaps. It always gave me something extra, a thing I missed while watching, an extra information, a cultural note... or an interesting point of view.

I agree (with many) on basically non-existent editing and a tiresome husband mystery sometimes sadly influencing the story. That said, I still consider this drama one of the best ones of 2013.

I guess my favorite character was Haitai and I loved his friendship with Najung (and I actually wouldn't mind if he was the husband). I missed him in the second half when they just shipped him to the army.

And of course I loved Mom and Dad.

And the goat.... :--)

just leaving this comment from viki. try to read it with an open mind and maybe the story and ending will make sense to you:

"I’ll list the hints but first, I have to let you know that pd/writers LOVES using music to express character’s feeling in that certain scene since from reply 1994. Also PD loves using objects or placements, yeah.. the example would be the stuffed animals.. He had few interviews about BGM and placements.

Anyway..The major hint was Na Jeong of course.

"To You" - main song - Trash's song -- lyric is basically describing his feeling. When this ost came out there was an interview about this, that PD Shin personally asked Seo Tae Ji for the permission of remaking the song and said it is to used for main theme of leading male character. You might think this is not big deal but it is b/c it’s Seo Tae Ji’s song.

Ep 1 --- NJ at the wedding preparation room BGM : I fall in love - the lyric which basically describing her feeling about her FIRST LOVE. Stacks of books at NJ's apartment (throughout the episodes, they show only trash reading all different types of books). Trash's video player in NJ's apartment present 2013(In 1994, Trash have it in his room, after he moved out from the boarding house, he had in his apartment ep. 11 or 12).

Ep 2 --- Biggest twist : Trash (To hide this, pd didn't even do a press conference. LOL), last scene where NJ’s narration says ‘among five of men, my husband is there.” and shows five candidates of NJ’s husbands and camera focus is going toward Trash and only yellow light doesn't cover Trash. Also the order of standing: Trash, SCP, Binggrae, HaeTae, ChilBong (order of revealing names).

Ep 4 --- NJ getting package for Trash in 1994 and for husband in 2013 (parallel). CB doesn’t have Sook Sook’s phone number in his KaKaoTalk. 1st: NJ calling the husband's name Kim Jae Joon.

Ep 6 --- Stuffed guerrilla and seal hugging -- NJ and husband hugging(pd interviewed around ep 15? I don't remember but he said he intentionally arranged stuffed animals to show what will happen in that certain episode. Stuffed animal first and then the scene). NJ and NJ's dad complain about not picking the right date for the wedding in 2002 wedding scene (parallel to this episode points out that Trash doesn't have sense of picking presents). BGM: Doll's Knight - Trash's song,, there's meaning behind this song but I don't feel like explaining it. Same goes to Magic Castle BGM, it has similar meaning behind it.

Ep 8 --- mayo 섹드립ㅋㅋ(kind of embarrassing to explain so I’m not going to), 2nd: Yoon Jin calling the husband's name Kim Sung Kyun. BGM: Magic Castle - Trash's song (It comes out when SCP covers YJ’s mouth but the scene carries out and shows NJ’s wedding picture)

Ep 9 --- 뜬금없이 SCP looking for milk...(Trash drinks milk through the episodes).

Ep 11 --- 2002 Wedding scene NJ's dad says that NJ's husband's looks ugly to him, he would never say that to CB. (he says that again in ep 20 to Trash, which was obvious to ppl in ep 20 now.)

Ep 12 --- The pd’s joke.. funny way of saying number 3 represents Trash (yeah. Throughout the episodes, they show 3 quiet often starting with the apartment number to Trash’s student’s ID etc…) but license plate 2703 when Trash is with NJ and NJ’s family to 2700 when Trash is with ex-girlfriend..LOL.. BMG: Happy Me - Trash's feeling..

Ep 13 --- Everybody is laughing while watching the scene where Kim Min Jong singing 'Feeling Only You'...

'Feeling Only You' while NJ and Trash's expression doesn't look good. Who sings Feeling Only You at the wedding anyway I mean the lyric is totally not for the wedding.. LOL. The red thread(string) of fate came out here.. and through ep 15, the red thread becomes big as NJ and Trash’s relationship gets closer. (also relates to ep 19 red gloves).

Ep 14 --- Medical books.......

Ep 15 --- Trash telling about him and NJ's relationship to NJ's parents (By telling this, he meant dating NJ to marry her and pd/writer clearly showed why he thought about the matter of dating NJ for a year and finally decided to date her. I'm going to go little off the topic but some ppl here said CB was the reason why Trash made a move to date NJ. OH PLEASE. Trash's feeling was going to develop no matter what. It was only the matter of time. Watch it from the ep 1 and see all of Trash's reaction and such and Trash didn't even know half of NJ and CB scenes. OMG, I hate it when ppl say it was bc of CB. Should I have to describe and write all the scenes as well? WATCH IT FROM THE BEGINNING. I'm getting ahh... ) BGM - Magic Castle -- Trash's song, it is definitely Trash’s feeling.

Ep 17 --- 3rd: 'Die Die' Jin Yi calling the husband's name Kim Dong Joon. When Trash is talking to NJ on the phone, background towel says ‘It’s fate’ later towel disappears. It appears in the proposal scene too (king of 정신뼝자(psycho) = 신피디(PD Shin)LOL). (keyword ‘fate’ in ep 19)

Ep 18 --- NJ and Trash engagement broke off.(If Trash is not husband, what kind of a stupid idiot 호구 would be a groomsman on the ex-fiance's wedding? 4th: Ae Jung calling the husband's name (Song) Ho Joon.

Ep 19 --- Red Gloves - "Family" Gloves -- NJ's father gives that to Trash. Mom mentions ‘fate’. NJ starts to narrate about FATE.

There might be more, but I can't think of it right now..

From the director's interview he said reply 1994 is not about finding the husband but FINDING THE NAME. Which might mean that this is the story of Trash claiming his real name as NJ's husband b/c to NJ's parents he was a son to them, to NJ, he was like a brother.(I'm sorry but I'm going to go off topic here again, some ppl said that Trash doesn't do anything for NJ and he takes her for granted. OMG. He sacrificed his life for NJ and her family, with his own willing. And always in the end, he gives NJ what she wants. Should I have to list all the things that Trash did also?Ahh.. Some ppl don't see this b/c their only focus is on one character and doesn't point out wrong that CB did to Trash). Before ep 18, someone found out the order revealing names of each people was actually the order of the standing in ep 2. Trash(1st to called out by NJ) - SCP(2nd) - Binggrae(3rd) - HaeTae(4th) - ChilBong(5th)

Also, each couple describes NJ and Trash's relationship as a couple. (It was after ep. 19 that someone found out about this.)

- YJ and SCP - Always fighting. Woman always wins. Man let her win.
- Die Die and Binggrae - Woman likes the man and expresses her feeling to him. Man looks at the woman and becomes disturbed or confused and starts to have many thoughts.
- Ae Jung and Hae Tae - They are old friends and a lover. As they slowly become apart, they become distant and in the end, they split up. But they meet again.

Characteristics of each couples are describing NJ and Trash.

It was mentioned in ep 20 comment board a bout the writer got the name KIM JAE JOON from the real doctor who saved Kim Tae Won. The PD and the writer met the doctor from the show called ‘Man’s Qualification’ and they were really touched and thankful. The thing is PD and the writer sometimes get their characters name from real person or they use actor's real name. Also, PD/writers got Si Won from Reply 1997, her character from real broadcasting writer and little about her story. There’s more people, but I can’t think of it.

The PD interviewed after ep 2, the big twist of Trash, why he set his character as it is. And he basically said he wanted to create a love story developing from that relationship.

The PD also interviewed and said there’s no triangle love in this drama.

The PD also interviewed that there’s no twist in the end. He said with Writer Lee Woo Jung, when they were to create Reply 1994, they wanted to make it different from the Reply 1997, but as they keep adding different story, it became weird and that it wouldn’t be Reply series if they deviate from the story. (I might not translate this right but he basically said he won’t deviate the storyline of developing relationship like Reply 1997.)

And to be honest, even without clues that pd/writer gave out or pd's interviews, and if people don't watch this drama as 3,5,7,9..people should know who the husband by just following the story-line or flow of the story from the beginning. I mean pd/writers were developing NJ and Trash’s relationship from the beginning to 10+ episodes"

My post was cut off and weirdly place elsewhere, so I will post this again.

I mean, why have this super meaningful NYE reunion scene with the BGM and title reveal of “should I say I love you again?” At that exact moment, while the song “start” was revealed hours before, which was on the outset NJ’s song for pops, but perfectly echoed CB’s feelings for NJ, with the song framed by ticking sounds, and the MV ending sequence with NJ at a neutral place between CB and T, if you really wanted to say that CB really had no chance, and his love for NJ was really about his loneliness and need for family. Why was that necessary?

To continue with my post that was cut off...

And to others who say that CB was given a satisfactory ending, you probably weren’t nearly as emotionally invested in his character. (To help you understand how we feel, remember how Nareki fans felt and responded to the 2 minute break up sequence between NJ and T).

AM1994 was overall a bittersweet experience for me, because we did not get the emotional payoff and felted cheated and manipulated in the process. To Shin PD and Writer Lee, you are still one of the most skilled production teams in kdramaland, but you have forever lost my respect in terms of your creative integrity and a fundamental respect for your viewers as intelligent and emotional human beings. I will still follow up on your work, but I will not longer trust you like I did this time, and you deserve that for crying wolf to us for 20 freaking episodes.

However, I am thankful to you for bringing us the Sinchon gang, for NJ, Oppa, HT, YJ, BG, and SCP, who by the way, was my favorite character in the show even though I was emotionally invested in CB. Foremost, I want to thank you for bringing us CB, who shone so brightly despite being beaten up over and over and over again and at points, rendered to just being a plot device. Thank you for the way you loved so fiercely and unreserved in a way appropriate for your youth, for warming my heart in this cold winter, for changing forever the way I look at first snows, ramyun, and NYE, for finally making me interested in baseball, and thank you YYS, for bringing CB alive to us. You have won yourself a lifetime fan, and many others, I am sure.

Gosh. It is insensitive comments like this that make having closure just a little harder. Your comment is equivalent of me saying that Oppa was a plot device from the beginning as simply the character object to fulfill NJ's childhood obsession with marrying her Oppa, and an antagonistic plot device to prevent NJ from really seeing CB's heart.

While my above comments are harsh and a large exaggeration of my frustration with Oppa, whom I love as a character, it shows how badly developed the NJ and Oppa romance was for nearly half of the audience. Remember that a good number of CB shippers were Oppa shippers from the onset, and we left because we were DISSATISFIED with how T and NJ romance played out.

sorry, it's just that I've loved Chilbongie from the beginning, so I'm pretty disappointed in his lack of development. between his character and the oppa/na-jung relationship, I'd honestly say the latter was better developed (though I agree that it was not by any means well done). that's my biggest complaint about the series: preserving the mystery became more important to the team than good character and relationship development. rather than oppa, I'd be more inclined to call na-jung a device because her crush on oppa was what got the plot moving and after that her role in the show was reduced to a purely reactive character. the only really big thing her character did was accept a job overseas, and even that was really just another plot device in disguise, meant to keep them apart and set the stage for their break-up.

I've pretty much accepted the show's flaws and moved on, but I guess itwas pretty inconsiderate of me to be so blunt. I hope you find your closure (:

@adette

I'm really sorry for my loaded comment earlier. I actually regretted posting it shortly afterwards, but I had no internet access for a couple of days. I was still so emotionally raw from the last episode that to anything seemingly mocking of CB's character, I would respond immediately with indignation.

To that end, I would actually argue that both T and CB's characters were rendered as plot devices, in that both characters were not fleshed out during the last 4-ish episodes for the sake of dragging out the husband mystery. NJ, on the other hand, was given her moment to shine, especially when she confronted T with the problems of their relationship. I really thought she showed maturity in her reactions, and Ara really nailed that scene.

On the other hand, the major character moment for T was reduced to a text message and the "I love you," but the audience was deprived of how he got there and the future significance of his change in his relationship. The same with CB. There is nothing inherently wrong with his ending, but the development was stripped away and the execution was all kinds of horrible for proper emotional pay-off.

It seemed like for most of 15-20, the production team was so obsessed with keeping up with the mystery, while in ep21, the team was shooting to get to the happy ending for everyone so fast that the real development and emotional payoff was lacking.

Anyways, I still hold that CB was not a plot device since the beginning, because he really is a full character despite what other people says. We are shown that he is sweet and polite, yet we are shown to his hurt inside. We are also shown that he doesn't hide his hurts to persons he loves, such as his mom and BG. He can be petty at times, but he is also a go-getter and a hard worker. He is considerate, but impulsive at times, appropriate for his age. These are all characteristics that stand alone, separate from his storyline with NJ. It's just unfortunate in the drama and a disservice to narrative integrity, that the writers chose to use him in the latter half as a plot device to drag out the love "triangle" and the husband mystery.

To end my very long reply and add parts that were cut-off.

I just want to point out that part of why we felt so manipulated and indignant at the fact that our feelings were dragged through the mud for the sake of the mystery, is because the writer was trolling us at an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT level than in AM1997. The trolls used in AM1997 were mostly harmless, but AM1994 trolls were used to the point of being emotionally manipulative while being illogical for the most part, and it shows in how sloppily the wedding and 2013 scenes were wrapped up. And seriously, the writer's explanations for them really do not hold up to scrutiny no matter how you look it. And that is partly why people are so mad, because we were expecting to be treated as intelligent and logical, but given the complete opposite.

Finally, I want to apologize as a CB fan for some of the behavior seen here from our camp. Honestly, it was much worse in soompi and Baidu bars. Although I completely understand the backlash because I felt the same way but was able to get over my anger pretty fast, these type of comments are rather out of line for a neutral public space such as this one.

However, to those of you who are calling CB a creeper, at this time and many more times in previous episodes, you are doing the exact same thing. Remember that people on the other side are real human beings, who are just as smart as you, with real life e

Side note, comments like "are they really watching the same show as us?" Actually really hurt because it questions and even denies our perspective and feelings as being legitimate.

i took it to mean that usually, a love triangle involves two rivals and the object of their affections... but here, based on the story alone, chilbong was never a proper rival. he didn't actually fight against trash, because he never had a chance to win na-jung's affections in the first place. this, again, is based solely on the main story... the 2013/2002 wedding scenes are edited to play up the mystery, thereby creating a faux-rivalry (even though if you pay attention only to the trajectory of the story [and ignore the red herrings in the future scenes] its pretty clear that theres no contest because na-jung only sees oppa. she never for a second considers chilbong romantically)

i agree that he's clearly trying to have it both ways tho. even if the intent in the writing was to not have a "real" triangle and rivalry, but his editing and certain directorial choices definitely created a rivalry where there didn't need to be one. it made a story about a couple and a third guy pining for the female lead on his own seem to be about two guys with equal shots at being with the heroine (which it really was not). so it's kind of shitty for him to say something like that, because he purposely touted the show as something it wasn't, so it's a little unfair for him to backtrack and be like "no, no, we misled you all into thinking it was chilbong vs. oppa but really it wasn't, it was just about na-jung and oppa finding their way back to each other!"

0

My point exactly, adette. Based on the characterizations alone, this was never a love triangle at all. But the story was consistently manipulated with false clues (which Chilbong shippers can recite in exhaustive detail) to provide dramatic conflict (which they could have found elsewhere) and viewer "buzz" (which appears to have been successful, unfortunately). So I call foul on the PD, and the writer as well.

GF & JB, thank you so much for recapping the whole series (even though I know it could get a bit tiresome at times, and I'm a Nareki shipper lol)!

I enjoyed the show, and I enjoyed it even more with your recaps. I also enjoyed your comments on each episode - some were really insightful and made me rewatch the whole episode just to see it for myself.

Although I got sick of most of the fanwars and the delulu comments (which, to be fair, were coming from both sides), it was an enjoyable - albeit bumpy - ride. Thank you again, and I look forward to reading your other recaps.

I wonder why people keeps saying they have "second lead" syndrome. If I recall correctly there was no mention who's first lead, who's second lead in the plot. The writer just shove Oppa in one corner, CB in the next and so forth. I pretty much got dizzy. Mystery, not-so mystery dragged far too long, smh!

Hats off to you YYS, for portraying your character so well. The last fictional drama I remember crying to was Secret Garden. Life's a b$tch or in this case a writer. I mean anyone can see how his story really didn't have a proper closure, what?
You made him confess twice! Wth
Some of you are saying he was annoying. Annoying isn't the word here, find a better vocabulary. If I recall NJ never said he was annoying

Also does this writer have an obsession with first love or what? is this a way to vent? redeem lost memory? Not a lot of peeps get to marry their HS sweethearts. No more sequels or mystery shenanigans. I was in it for a pretty good laugh

I think there is another way to look at the CB storyline. Which is, like the original Little Mermaid who really wanted a soul and mistook the way to get a soul with being human, what he really wanted was a family. And he may have not gotten Najung, and the gang may have messed up in being family to him in the early years, but I am going to guess on top of his wife he has made these friends into family after 20 years. And really, that's priceless.

I wish they explored Chilbong's character on earlier episodes. He is my favorite character ever on dramaland. I actually don't mind if he didn't end up with Najeong though I will be glad if they were together because that makes a fresh story line.

All of the Cider shippers or should I say ChilbongxHappiness shippers are sad and depressed because of the outcome. Again, if they introduced a girl to him on earlier episodes, the shippers won't be this mad.

I just wish they didn't focus much on the love triangle. Well, it wasn't a love triangle itself.

I have some concerns on this drama:
*Why drag the drama until episode 21?
*Najeong and Trash's relationship does not have a strong foundation, at least in the viewers eyes.
*What happened to the theme? The miracles, timing, 10000 hour rule?
*Why did it take years for Najeong to reject CB's confessions? That's doesn't happen in real life.

Above all, it was a good drama. They did emphasize friendship and family. I'm so glad Chilbong found family in his friends. I'm going to miss this drama A LOT. I'm going to miss Appa, Omma, Chilbongie, Haitai, SCP, Bing, and YJ. Not to be mean, but NJ and Trash didn't make an impact on me as much as the others did. (Again, for me, that was the flaw of this drama)

I hope I can find my own Chilbong! :)

Thanks for the recap!!

I usually have cases of second lead syndrome but that wasn't what made me want Chilbong to end up with Najung, it was the character himself. To me he seemed more of the husband in 2013 than anyone and for them to just leave his ending without details, I'm very upset. I didn't fall in love with Chilbong and Najung's relationship, but Chilbong alone. And I wasn't too fond of Trash's and Najung's relationship because I just could never shake off the sibling relationship they had before. Episode 20 was such a bad tease. Also, I heard that Chilbong was the original husband but than they changed it because of Trash's popularity, I don't know if it's true but I wouldn't be surprised. I think the story would have been much better if he was the ending husband and the story lines in the last 6 episodes or so were changed in his favor. Everything seemed rush and full of fillers. I mean we spent 30+ hours watching a show that in the end is exactly what it was like from the start. Just wished for what I wish for in very drama, SOMETHING DIFFERENT instead of cliche.

It's false. Trash was always the husband.

Yes. My response was to this part.

Yes, the original has always been Trash. The writer stick to the original of the story.

Given the news scandal of Jung-woo that could had shaft his character, at that time, the writer could had change the husband HOWEVER as a true writer, she stick to her original and did not waver in what she want to narrate on her story regardless of all the things that happen (YYS popularity int'l base, Jung-woo popularity and his scandal, etc)

I even remember news and interview when Jung-woo scandal hit (that he is in a relationship), they had ask if it will affect the story of Answer Me (since people had believe that because of it, his character may get shaft) but in the end, the writer and Shin PD did not waver and stick to their ORIGINAL INTENT!

I'm not going to compare is 94 was better than 97 or visa versa. I will compare them for illumination, though.

I, personally, think the main plot of 97 was more to my taste. However, I do understand why 94's main plot was constructed as it was.

With respect, I don't agree with JB and GF on WHY the main plot could be handled better.

From a technical and emotional stand point, I think if they had something *after* the husband bit, it would have been a stronger drama. Or at least a handful of other mysteries to play as the main plot--playing the old time sageuk layering conflict. (See Dae Jang Geum for that particular structure.)

I did like the small romantic moments, though I would have liked more of them--give pay off, and also offsetting the ideal with the reality as well.

I think from the Korean stand point it was too obvious:
- They stated last time they hated large events.
- Oppa needed another love interest.
- The Zero episode.... by presenting Oppa clearly first...
- The hair dye in episode 6. (They should have the same hair color.)
- The arm looks like Jung Woo with the same manicure and skin color...
- And they could have made NJ's father dislike Chilbong at least once??? (which was a big clue.

Male leads:

Chilbong was verbal, liked events and kinda seemed like the ideal people hold in their heads (Which I think was the point by talking about his looks in the last episode). He also could have had a bit of adjustment towards the latter half of the drama to make it harder to tell who was the husband. For example, he kept giving generic gifts to NJ. He didn't ask her to take care of him. It's almost as if the writers already wrote him off in episode 4. After all those years, he should have given her something better than cake in the last episode. (which is a pick on the writers, not the character.) I fault the writers for not going beyond the ideal/fantasy facade and trying to make him a real rival from the start.

To me, Oppa was handled well. His theme was targeted actions are louder than words. I noticed that some people didn't get the older brother-younger sister obligations and rallied against him for it--thinking it was shallow or should be permanent. I also think his gestures on screen didn't communicate with the foreign audience. But I think if you look at it through a Korean lens it's rather touching as a dilemma. Back hugs, the lip bite, the seal are not brotherly. (Episodes 1-4) People said he did nothing 1-10. What kind of siblings do you have? (*jk*) I'd gag thinking about doing that to my brother. Elew.

Best Part:
What I loved was the smaller twists, which both dramas did fairly well, though '94s were more subtle because it did not highlight them in words--but let them stand in the background as a way to win your heart bit by bit. I know the site owners disagree, but I think from my POV, I genuinely loved that they did not have to say it for the gestures to exist. My acting coach keeps saying to not say if you have a physical state and to leave some things to mystery. You don't have to speak them to act them out--and not saying it is harder to act. It's also much harder to write as well. And for that, the acting and writing shined for me.

Oppa gives the seal, but does not say why. Chilbong hugs after the fire, but does not talk about it. Sook Sook+Haetae <3

Winning points:
Main plot='97.
Subplot background='94

Just a few points of clarification. I don't think the cake was really a gift, but a representation of how much CB desired company and recognition for his birthday, that he would want the person whom he loved the most to just share a part in his birthday cake, even if she doesn't know it.

The same plot was actually used in a famous Chinese Internet novel called, 致我们终将逝去的青春(to our eventually forgone youth), by the main female character in her pursuit of the main male character when he clearly does not want her. I guess this is where part of the division occurs, because of cultural differences. There really is an unnatural obsession with first loves in Korean culture, while first loves in Chinese culture are treated with bittersweet fondness and a part of maturation and growth! and first loves are really not that big of a deal in other cultures.

I still think the character should have shown *some* growth, but he kinda stayed stagnant. I do get towards the last few minutes he found his "real" family in the other borders and learned to reply on other people, but it's the last episode--should be the time for the final touches, not finishing a character arc in a rush--and that's my objection to the cake. It's generic, he's not completing his arc and he's not really moving from his flaws like Oppa is in the same episode.

First Loves used to be a big deal back in the days of the Presbyterian Christian movement. If you read L.M. Montgomery (Canadian)--almost all of the characters end up with their first loves.

I would have loved it if Na-jung married Chilbongie, just to make it different from the expected ending. I do love this drama and Go Ara was awesome here.

The more I read the comments here and from various other places where NJ/CB shippers populate the more I am convinced that a good number of you never paid any attention to what this series was telling you. What, did you skip past the he-who-must-not-be named rival of your chosen guy and just watch the scenes that contained your OTP?

Not once in this series did Na Jung reciprocate Chilbong's feelings. Not. Once. Yet there were still people right up until Na Jung called Oppa by his name that actually thought CB still had a shot at being the husband. Again, what series were you people watching?

actually,, cb never start anything with nj. He did play as catalyst in some part of nj-t relationship but it didn't mean that without him tey couldn't make it .
So his narration in episode 20,"....., end it with my own way" is not surprise.
Instead ranting about why chilbong hardwork-consistency for nj didnt work well, off course because love isn't about hardwork, it just there in your heart.
The writer did a good job portray second male to more likeable to viewer , if you see from different aspect, chilbong actions toward najung could merely named as selfish attitude but you cant see him that way because there's some counterargument for how he behave that way.
One thing I dont like about it was nj-cb hugging farewell not tonly the scene is neccesary but also its dialouges. But, the sole core of this drama is about friendship can go beyond family bond, and it applies for cb.
-But it doesnt mean i want to rewatch this series, lol

Yes thank you for the memories SHOW. And introducing me to the wonderful cast. Who would have thought I would have such a soft spot for SCP and YJ.

But man the fan wars. Were epic and awful and I never want to read such nasty comments in a show I actually liked. But remember now because I thought the comenters were really hitting beyond the limit and had absolutely no Internet or respect for others etiquette.

BTW, I don't think a different then expected ending would have been Najung with CB. It would have been Najung with Hatai (forget team Garbage and CB, after seeing Hatai walk around the kitchen with baby on back, I'm team Hatai forever). :)

First of all, thank you GF and JB for recapping this series. It was one hell of a ride.

All right, this episode was satisfying at the most. My heart wasn't as broken as I thought i would be because I actually DREAMED that Oppa and Na-jung ended up together (despite rooting for CB) and it ended up being true, no lie. I was much more weirded out than heartbroken, so that numbed the pain a little.

Obviously, the show is best at those little slice-of-life, heart-rendering moments. Since I accepted the fate of my OTP, I became disinterested didn't focus on the main couple for once. The friendship bonding, familial bonding, and of course Chilbong! His vulnerability, loneliness, all of that corresponding to the bonds mentioned above. It was so relatable and such a touching moment.

The character development of Chilbong is controversial here, and I do think his was undeveloped to some degree. I liked that we dug deep into his emotions, thoughts, and feelings, seeing another side to him. What I don't like is that the writers completely disregarded or forgot his background. His parents? Does he ever reconcile with them? RELATIONSHIPS are one of the key themes in this series, the fact that they would ignore his is quite bothersome to me. About his closure, I initially thought he didn't, but then changed my mind. He still has his other family and friends, doesn't he? Sure, he didn't get his crush, but in return he had people who loved him and friends who appreciated him so much more than before. He also starts moving on! Not that much was lost for him.

However, I don't like how the 2013 scenes were completely inconsistent with the past. Almost all of them were pointing towards Chilbong, and the past was a flip switch ride between the two leads. And the fact the excuses they gave for Chilbong's actions in the present seemed very last-minute and sloppy to me.

The mystery was arguably the weakest point of the story, and I ironically it was the main and biggest question/conflict of the series. The writing was awesome in the beginning, but hit a plateau and sinkered, and the writing is the main foundation of a show. If the drama was less about the romantic relationship and more about friendships, it would have been a lot better. Not ALL K-dramas need to be about romance!

Despite the show's misgivings, I do look fondly at it and consider it my favorite drama of 2013. Will I want to rewatch it? Probably not, but it was fun. Of course, the best thing that the series showed me was the acting. Thank you to Go Ara, who managed to prove me wrong. Thank you to Jung Woo, for proving me right (again!). Thank you, show, for introducing me to Son Ho Joon, Kim Sung Kyun, and making me particularly fond of Baro and Min Do-hee, even if I don't listen to K-pop as much.

But most importantly, show, thank you for reintroducing me for Yoo Yeon Seok. Seriously. You guys made a wise choice for choosing him as a lead, and I fully expected to root for Jung Woo (BTW, I never considered him a second lead; he was just as a lead as Jung Woo was). He nailed EVERY scene he was in, and I have never rooted for a character like CB. He is my current obsession, seeing him a few times but never impacting my heart until now. He is now one of my favorite Korean actors, and his portrayal of CB is now one of my top favorites ever. Thank you for giving him the opportunity, and thank you, YYS, for stealing my heart. You deserve all your newfound attention,...

Your subconscious was picking up on cues on the ending of the story.

Though it was pretty certain by the time Oppa kissed her. (Camera angle count) Even JB and GF said it was over by that point.

Thank you for the wonderful recaps.

I have to say the fan-war is as interesting as the drama itself. Can't blame the fans when they give us such a solid 2nd lead :) to begin with.

Happy New Year everyone! Let's hope for more great dramas to come in 2014!

Finally, it's done. Inhale, exhale.

Farewell thee, Am 1994.

The love angles were like a roly poly ride to sesame street w/ Oscar The Grouch singing, "I'm sad, because I'm happy and I'm happy, 'cause I'm mad, and I'm mad, 'cause it sounds sappy to be happy when you're sad..." If I were to ride a ship then it would be none other than...wait for it... the friendSHIP. (psshh...haha!)

Aren't their relationship something to admire?--from being just young yokels living together in a boarding house to eventually becoming like one big crazy, loud & jolly family even after 20 yrs.

Thank you...

NJ Omma/Appa, pls adopt me. I want to eat mountain-ful of foods.

Na Jung Ah, "Can you quickly come outside and play?" Indeed, Love is like a battlefield. Your two knights has flamed some camps. War's over yet it's still flickering.

Oppa Trash, Your uncertainties made me want to pull a Cher (in Moonstruck scene) on you and say, "Snap out of it!" Still, I want an older brother just like you.

Chilbongie, I also want to pull a "Cher" on you but just because your heartbreak is killing me. I wept at your hand shake. Along again, naturally.

Haitai, Chinggu! BBF: Best Boy Friend.

Binggurae, Puppy! Making the best decision is always the hardest. Will you let me pinch your puffy cheeks?

Sam Cheon Po, "The simple things you see are all complicated. I look pretty old, and I'm back-dated, yeah." Your finale monologue is spot on. X

Yoon Jin, You had me w/ your hair and the badassery but no more drinking games for you.

---
...and GoodBye.

Signing up for the next prequel-sequel. Forward-rewind to Answer Me 80's or 2000's?

Happy New Year!
