Lee So-yeon gets knocked up for new drama
by javabeans
Dong Yi and Angel’s Temptation villainess Lee So-yeon is taking the lead in a new SBS weekend drama titled Nice To Meet You (a working title), where she plays a teenage single mother. Well, I’m assuming that the character ages at some point, since Lee will soon be 29 — she looks fabulous, but hardly teenage.
Her leading man will be played by Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police), who was recently discharged from military duty, where he served in the air force. In his comeback role, he plays a weak-willed guy who gets his girlfriend pregnant, but ditches her to go abroad. Ohh, you bastid! You’ve got a lot of making up to do already, and the drama hasn’t even begun, buddy. This should be good. (I’m kind of a sucker for stories where the dude acts immaturely and has to redeem himself, provided he goes through adequate tribulations in the process.)
The drama is written by Kim Sa-kyung of the weekend melodrama Loving You a Thousand Times (which had its share of makjang twists and tears) and directed by PD Han Jung-hwan of Please Come Back, Soon-ae (which was light and funny). I like the premise so I’m hoping it’s not a total melodrama, although with that writer, it very well may be.
Nice To Meet You will begin filming in mid-April and replaces Smile, Mom in May.

Oooh, Ohn Joo-wan looks like a major hotty. Was he the dorky best friend from My Mighty Princess? Anyways, good for him for getting his duties to his country out of the way with and now getting back on the horse. But it just makes people ask with more guys returning and making projects. . . Where's Jae Hee?
Lee looks really pretty. Knocked up girl at young age who survives it all? Sounds good to me. Just go easy on the tears writer.

He does look pretty cute. And since he was recently discharged ... does that mean ... gratuitious shower scene?! Hope so. :)

I was admiring his pretty face, but I hadn't even thought of gratuitous shower scenes! Now I really have something to look forward to ;)

Yes, he was the dorky best friend of Shin Min-ah in My Mighty Princess. That was a fun and quirky movie, wasn't it?

Some of my Korean friends laugh when I say I've seen that movie. They said it wasn't popular and quickly made sure I saw Coffee Prince and MNIKSS. HAHAHA. It was a good movie in my opinion.

really?? I haven't seen any dramas adressing this issue, but I don't really watch melos. I thought kdramas generally stayed away from the tabooed topic of sex before marriage.
I mean according to most dramas its always the girls "first kiss".

I think that the unwed single mother character is a relative rarity in kdrama land and especially as romantic lead. I'm looking forward to seeing how she's written, how their romance progresses, and how they function as a family. Awkward family dinners! His difficulty adjusting to the role of father (and husband, snerk)! Her reservations towards him! How he disturbs their lives! So much ground to mine and history to map. I am pretty curious about this one.

Single Moms:
Thank You (loved it. I recommend highly, even if others won't.)
Good Job, Good Job (heh, it was meh. Too. Many. Tears. FFWD a lot)
Creating Destiny/Making Fate (it was the sister of one of the leads, but her story was pretty important throughout the show. It was *shrugs*, Skipped a few bits here and there.)
Wonderful Life (okay, she was only unmarried for a short bit, like 2 episodes or something. Oh the tears and unrequited love. It was ok considering I saw it when I was still new to kdramas, but I don't think I'd watch it again. Cute for a beginner, groan inducing to an old timer.)
Dandelion Family (watched it only for the parts with Lee Yoon Ji and Kim Dong Wook's parts. But there is a side-side story with a woman who had a child out of wedlock, but she married to cover it up)
Ok, I give up. Truthfully, I try to stay away from loads of dramas that may be potential tearjerkers so I might be missing. But my short list makes it seem like, yeah, the topic of single moms doesn't get addressed a lot when it comes to the main characters of kdramas. Heh, now I really want to go see how many really are out there.

What are you talking about? Yeah, there are tons about divorced women, but there are only a few about ones who haven't been married and they are FEW and far between.

Teenage single mom in korean version? Eh. I don't know why, but I'm feeling pretty skeptic. I mean, Korea just loves to glamorize things. Sort of like Hollywood?
I liked Japanese approach on the subject in 14sai no haha. Good drama.

Teenage single mom = Gilmore Girls, to me.
Which I love. I hope that they focus on the mother-daughter relationship, too.

I adore Ohn Joo Wan, but double ugh to both the teenage single mom plot and the less-than-stellar personality of his character. Actually, triple ugh - that writer! Loving You a Thousand Times was just a looooong, arduous trudge through absolute insanity. I'll hold out in the hopes that the director might have more of an influence on this, but won't be betting my life savings on it.

If it's anything close to Loving You A 1000x guidelines then I'm reserving my pond of tears for this one.
I use to think OJW looks like Rain/Bi in many angles shot for My Mighty Princess. Nice to have him back in leading roles.
LSY was so good in Dong Yi. It'll be nice to see her in a modern drama.

I'm a total sucker for guys who weren't there before but slowly become a father figure for the children. I'll watch it if it isn't too much of a melodrama.

I really like her in temptation of an angel and I wish they hadn't killed her off. Her character was sympathetic and tragic. I also like loving you a thousand times (it was my first k-drama ever) I loved crying when the couple had hard times, when her stepmother finally came around. When I think of single mother and immature father I think of chae rim and si won and lee yu ri in daring woman. I look forward to smile mom finally being replaced. that one is just outrageous right now.

Ugh, I would love to have a drama about a single, previously unmarried woman who doesn't end up with her baby daddy. Koreans are totally unrealistic about this. As someone who has a half Korean daughter with a Korean man who didn't take responsibility thanks to his weakness against his family, I can 100% say that it's like almost IMPOSSIBLE to ever love someone that betrays you like that. Most women who stay do it out of the ease for themselves and the kid + unable to give up the dream of a family at the expense of their self respect, rather than love. So I guess if it's portrayed like that, maybe I'd watch it.
But it really pisses me off when Koreans get so high and mighty about this subject and then think that the woman must fall in love with the man again. There is too much to every go back. My ex proposed to me even and I said no..... it's not like something switches and the past can all be forgotten. That's stupid and so unrealistic.

The premise sounds exactly like Juno except for the overseas bit.

Reason why I'll be watching this drama: OHN JOO-WAN.
First saw him in My Mighty Princess (awesome movie btw) and it was love at first sight.
*sigh* He's so effin hot and cute at the same time!
His eyes when he smiles-uuuuggghhhh! It kills me! SO. HOT.

This sounds like it could be good, but the fact that "Loving you a Thousand Times" was written by this guy makes me nervous. My sis watched that drama and ranted about the tearful and annoying twists. If it's going to be anything like that, I'll pass.
