I can't express how much I love reading Dramabeans Recaps... I can get all the details I missed when I was watching the episode, and get excited all over again! :)
Ahhh, and now MGIAG is over now... what a wonderful show! I only wish that the final episode was two hours long, so they could really show Daewoong and Miho living happily after and going through some of their Life Plans. It's enough to make me write bad fanfic :P

You want to know about oppa-pout wiggle?
Here goes: *lecture hat*
Oppa-pout- wiggle or OPW, was a term coined by Samsooki (I believe) to describe a particular behavioral pattern of the female, designed to bend the male of the species to her will.
The OPW usually consists of side to side rotational motion, accompanied by the word "Oppa" spoken in honeyed tones. The last syllable is emphasized and drawn out, which can be phonetically rendered as "Op-paaaa" The motion of the lips are exaggerated when speaking, which shape the lips into a voluptuous configuration familiarly known as the pout.
The particular sequence may vary from female to female, but it the OPW always has one invariable effect on the male; complete capitulation in most of the documented cases.
Although not as prevalent, the noona-pout- wiggle is also in evidence. It is the male counterpart of the OPW which is practiced on the distaff gender with similar effects as the OPW.

Whew! That was a long one! Off course I have my own style of OPW, but it is essentially the same, plus or minus a few flourishes here and there! ;)

Lmao, I just never envisioned using the OPW myself, is all. No real life scenario comes to mind in which it would be useful, however, my oldest daughter informs me I will have a Korean son-in-law, so I can see why she is practicing.
That you not only have this phrase, but know HOW to describe it AND practice it, means your crack is working you good, isn't it??
Psst, don't tell anyone, I'm working on a post for Thundie's little competition, and I'm using Tamna/Tamra Island for it. So ... I'm a tad distracted on my own crack tonight. It's just me and the baby and the dogs and frogs giggin' it, hubby is off to the beach one last time this year to body surf with the kiddos. Actually, me and the frogs are the only ones awake. So quiet in the house, I may not be able to write! :)

I have a house full of adolescent teenage boys right now. I keep having to leave the room to check that the explodie noises are indeed coming from the XBOX 360 or the PS3 and not from the box of fireworks that my husband so conveniently left in the living room. Why in the world did he think that surround sound was a good idea for video games or that teenage boys needed encouragement to blow things up?
My point: if you want, I will cheerfully box the boys up and send them to your house for your noise in the background... via FedEx, if you wish.

Aw, such a sweet offer, but I may have to refuse. The Rotts may not like the fireworks, for one, and the FedEx guy is already scared of them! It's just weird quiet, not used to it quiet, but I think I like it quiet. :)

*giggle* Yep, that crack is addictive! I remember reading about the OPW during my lurker days... ( I miss Samsooki, Langdon813, Belleza and the others) Now, instead of just practicing if I can practice on someone....(don't think of ChoiSiWon don't think of.. oh who am I kidding?) :P
So, you are participating in Thundie's competition? Omo, now I am really exited to see your entry! Good luck with your writing!

Oooh! OPW on Choi Siwon? hehehe I would like a crack at that too... but I've never been able to pull a complete OPW without cracking up in the middle of it soooo not going to do that anytime soon, but I so would like to pretend fall and have him carry me so that I could just feel his muscles ::giggle::
I'm so glad I'm not older than him and we're actually same age people, because I always feel aweful when I find out that the people I like are younger than me ::coughChoiMinhocough::
on a side note, Siwon would probably sooo fall for the OPW... he's just a softie like that...

Besides, my unnie who is very wise, assures me that god invented role playing, just so we can use the OPW on younger boyfriends. :)

*Sungkyunkwan Scandal*
( Hate/Love relationship)
First and foremost I want to say that I find “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” to be a very good drama. I love the fact that Park Min Young is IMHO a very beautiful actress, so me being a “Guy” I find that as one of the main reasons why I like the show, and also she is a very good actress.
The whole premise of the story is a very good one, but the only part that I am having a hard time (hence my hate) is the whole “Gender Bending) thing, and before any one said “chill man , its just a drama”, I will said it again, I find the premise of Homosexual undertones “gender bending” a very “Cheap” used of the Homosexual/Lesbian experience for two 'straight” persons to fall in love, why not do the reversal? Very simply put because it does not sell!!!!! And whether we like it or not the “Big Corporates” are only worry about their bottom line.
The reality is that this show “Caters” to woman (hence all the Male candy), the other thing that I hate is their cheap used of the “Female Fantasy” where the female is being “chase” by more than one male suitor, one of the main reason why all the (Fan Gurling) going around here, and at the “ Sungkyunkwan Scandal” recapping station.
I want to say at this point that I am not “Gay”, so a lot of you can rest assured that my comments do not come with that bias.
Having said that; The main reason why a I love
“Coffee Prince “ is that it is the first Korean drama where the main “Male Lead” falls in love for “another man”, and we can see how the “perfect “ life" of this guy who apparently has it all in life, is turn upside down when he realizes that he has fallen in love with another man, his portrayal was so realistic that me as as guy really felt his agony time and time again as he was trying to sort out his feelings for Go Eun Chan, and that is what “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” is missing.
The romantic interlude between Lee Sun Joon and that of Kim Yoon Hee is being portrait as a “Heterosexual” relationship, when the “reality” of the story line dictates that Sun Joon in reality is falling in love with Kim Yoon Shik thus making what ever Sun Joon is feeling a homosexual respond in nature, so I hope people can see why I am not very happy with the premise.
I think that “Coffee Prince” out of the “Gender Bending” dramas is the only one that “Got It Right”, the other one is just a ploy for two straight people to romantically fall in love in the long run which IMHO makes the whole Homosexual/Lesbian experience a “cheap joke”, and that at the end of the day should be offensive!!
But than again, what in hell do I know?

¡Hola amigo! ¿Dónde usted ha estado todo el dia?
I have only seen the first nine episodes of SKKS, so if something changes drastically in episode 10, then this conclusion will be wrong.
I don't know that Sun Joon doesn't fall in love with Yoon Hee as a male figure. I think that he questions his sexuality as much as the male lead in Coffee Prince does. I think that these characters are discovering themselves less than what the Coffee Prince characters had been doing, because I think that the Coffee Prince characters were older in age but younger in maturity... But I see where you are coming from.
I think that this has more of a feminist overtone than what you are wanting, though. This story, IMHO, is more about a woman being a powerful character during Joseon Era Korea. I get more that the romance is just a side story. I can see where a lot of this is feminine fantasy, but I think that is more of a side story than the main story.
Also, when you look at history from a feminist perspective, there are many cases in which a female had taken a male role in society, but it had nothing to do with homosexuality and everything to do with necessity or desire for that role. Everyone from King Hapshetsut in Ancient Egypt (she even sported a fake beard) to the multitudes of women who cross-dressed in military campaigns (Mulan, lots of women in the American and French Revolutions, Joan of Arc) to women in the American West during Manifest Destiny... history is riddled with these stories. None of them really have much to do with homosexuality at all... and I really don't get the homosexual overtone in SKKS. I don't see that it is the point of the story at all.
I'm sorry that this issue bothers you, and I'll try to rewatch the series so that I can see your point of view... but for right now I completely disagree with your conclusion.

It interesting that you see that way. SKKS is based on a bestseller in Korea, and I don't know if it was written by a female . It is true that the drama plays on female fantasy, but isn't most romantic dramas.Yes , from the posts here, it seem that most of the dramafans are females. For example, a good drama like Giant with no hot actors does not get recaps.Sometimes I wonder how many young men watch these dramas. I did not even think homosexuality is an issue here.I think it is more about politics and female place in society in that era,as we have the poor female, the gisang and the rich female.

So Na ya, Halmoni was totes a cheesefest. Yeah, I expected that but was also expecting it to be interlaced with some of the humour I so love from these kinds of specials (e.g. Father's House ('IMF'--HAHA!)? Kyungsook's Father?) but there was pretty much zilch here. Oh well, seeing Nam Ji-hyun's younger version being played by Park Ha-young made the watch more worthwhile.

I recently started watching Tamna Island.. and what can I say more that has not been said before by those fans that loved that drama.
I cannot believe I've let myself miss this drama before. I was planning to watch it but ever since MBC decided to cut back the episodes, I figured I'll just wait until the full version came out. I started watching the first episode last saturday since I was bored waiting for wednesday to arrive (yup, you got it right, new episodes of MGIAG) when I remembered to check out this drama.
Oh boy.. I did not expect the drama would be very good. Of course, now I absolutely adore Im Joo Hwan as Park Kyu!!!

the dvds form YAEntertainment have good subs because it is the "official" US release of the dvd.
The directors cut dvd has the original "planned" episodes before they the PD cut it down to 16. The drama was filmed in advance before broadcast so they had to cut and edit away a lot of scenes.
Tamra Island is planned to be a 21 episode drama.

This is totally off the beaten path, but I'm watching this k-drama and they're talking about the story of Faust. Only they way they pronounce it, it sounds more like "Paust" with a P. Which got me to wondering...
Is there no F sound in the Korean language?
Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

October 2, 2010 at 10:46 AM
You're right. F is usually clumped together with the P sound, thus "Jenniper", "Paust" etc. Although there are some exceptions like the phrase "Fighting!" is spelled a different way, so you get "Hwaiting!" I really wish someone dug down to the origins of that because I want to know how/why that phrase caught on.

Well, we're both right. Hangul is terse language, making it easy to read as it doesn't account for global sounds. For example, V. They don't use V - so why bother worrying about it. Which is cool and all, but then phrases like Valentines Day came along, blahblahblah global market crap. Valentines Day is so important guys! (bitter) haha

I understand that Korean keep pronounce F/V as P, for fact that no F/V in Korean alphabet. But I still wonder why they are keep miss-spell L as R or the otherwise. They can perfectly say Sarang with clear R, or all the korean word with suffix -eul or word like oneul with clear L. And when it comes to English words with L/R, they keep mixing the pronunciation, they have already heard how those words are spelled in English, haven't they?

October 3, 2010 at 5:04 AM
R/L is the same character in Hangul(written Korean characters) So if they are learning something to say in english just like we are learning to type things in korean we sometimes start out with the romanized versions with our own alphabet. They use there own alphabet to understand the pronunciation, so they have a 50/50 shot of being right about the R or L sound.

Sarang is not said with a clear R in the English sense.
If it were, it would sound like -> sa-wrahng (like the "wr" sound in "wrong")
As stated above, there's no F or V in Korean. Also, no Z or "th" sound.

Dude, about QSS, I'm banking straight romance for when I'm in the thick of winter, wearing two hoodies, three pairs of socks and cuddled up to my screen ready for something to warm my cockles.
But Invincible Parachute Agent isn't only about Eric, it's also got Shin Sung-woo in it, Shin Sung-woo, mofos!
Seriously you MUST watch Love Stories. It's like the KBS drama specials that are currently airing, but better, and all very different genres but all love stories at their core. Yes, I should have saved these for winter, too. I mean, I even watched the terminal illness one which I swore I wouldn't and even that was good. My faveourite one, surprisingly is Owner of Memory, which is the original Summer Scent (this came out in 1999, so with added emphasis on original) but so much more realistic and heartfelt and there are nice touches of humour. Second is one with Shin Sung-woo and Bae Doo-na. And since they're written by the same lady behind Sandglass you can imagine they'd be both evocative and intelligent, and they are.

Oh I know you would have janna, I know.
And speaking of saints you’ve reminded me, Seong-mo’s name literally means saint – that’s a pretty easy one, and in some cases it’s even used especially for St. Mary, the virgin (cough).
Gang/Kang means something along the lines of powerful/mighty?
And Jun-mo, isn’t that literally Giant? OK, don’t laugh, I may be wrong. If it is then, yes Gang-mo, you were clever, naming a little baby Giant.
The Lees were Christian and I’m assuming Mi-joo is another Christian reference?
But I like the name play. It’s quite cheeky. SM walks a very thin line between saint and satan, Whereas Gang-mo spent a good chunk of his life as an underdog with zilch power nor might.
I wonder what Pil-yeon means
Yes, do check out Love Stories, pretty please!

Apparently Mishil got reincarnated and her name is Na Young.
Shin Eun Kyung just announced to the the entire K-drama world that she's gunning for the 2011 Baeksang and lord help us all if we stand in her way.
The first 12 min of Flames of Desire had me quivering with goosebumps of awe and anticipation. Makjang done right, or shall I say we've just been delivered a high-brow makjang by the maestro himself.
Yoo Seung Ho looks and acts like a man, a young man, but a man nonetheless. That's when the acting takes over and you forget he's on the cusp of adulthood.
As much as Shin Eun Kyung is going to own this role and this drama body and soul, Seo Woo's one scene left an indelible impression. What happened to this girl, I'm dying to know.
With a 12.8% premiere episode, FoD looks poised to be the next big weekend drama success story. Sobs, my poor Secret Garden has a tough battle ahead of it come October.

Uhm .. nosey Parker here, but I wouldn't order Rosetta stone just yet. It's not the best way to learn Korean, I'm told. My kiddos take lessons from a Korean-American student now (just to fine-tune their conversational Korean), but check with the U.S. State Department's language programs (they are by far the best, as they are meant to be intense and thorough, I've found). That's what I intend to do when we're done with these basic lessons. :)

Hi Celestialorigin! Alas no, I don't have a twin brother names Sebastian. How fun would it have been if I did?
This makes me think though, Chosun is exactly in the same position as Olivia, only she doesn't have a Sebastian as a consolation prize. He is a consolation prize, since Sebastian is so much less vibrant and witty than Viola.
But wouldn't it be wonderful though, if Chosun fell in love with Daemul's younger brother? I feel so sad for her.

@ viola, Leonardswench, celestialorigin
Man, I hate sucking people into the vortex of currently airing dramas.
Here's my thing: if you still have lots of dramas yet unwatched, then do those first and let FoD bank at least 15-20 eps that you can marathon.
I'm at a point where I've seen pretty much most of the old dramas I want to see, so I'm happily enjoying the currently airing fare.
For example, if you guys haven't watched Giant, I suggest that since it's up to episode 40 and is probably more epic than FoD.
But FoD is seriously demented, wicked delicious fare. It's dark, it's heady, it's lush, it's provocative, it doesn't beat around the bush.
The first 12 mins. alone is already one the best opening sequences for a drama I have seen. It's not a set-up, it's not an intro, it's an immediate adrenaline shot to the heart and you're sucked right in.
If anyone complains that the presentation is too overwrought, which is isn't as I find it quite evocative and fitting for the genre, then blame it on the PD.
But Shin Eun Kyung's Na Young is the scariest woman character (and to an equal extent Kim Yoo Jung as her younger self was equally spine-chilling) I've seen since Mishil graced the screen. And Na Young isn't even the VILLAIN, she's the protagonist. Oh, what a dark path we weave.

I'm asking because, boy, some of them are just touchie feelie grabbie and others, two kisses, one arm grab, a piggy-back ride, a back hug, done.
City Hall? (My daughters were so imitating the pool-side scene today at the beach, I nearly choked when I got the video on my phone. Well, I was thinking over which dramas kind of do up the skinship big time, while others are very sparse on it.
Last Scandal comes to mind (did he touch her like, every 5 minutes once she was in the house?), as did City Hall, as did My Girl (rub her head, grab her hand, push her in the car, et cetera), as did Tamna/Tamra Island (which is it supposed TO BE!!!! AARGH!!!).

The second I read her post, I instinctively knew the only story of a man that has seared itself into my drama conscious is Dae Gil. Partly the character as written, mostly (heh 99%) the performance as given by Jang Hyuk.
He waz robbed of the Baeksang (and Binnie robbed as well for not even being nominated for his performance in FoL).
I wrote that without needing to edit a single word, it was almost like I've been waiting 6 months to let that man go. Ah Dae Gil, you were but always too good for Un Nyun and that world.

My entry was really written in inspiration, which rarely happens. It's nothing, just a few words for a character that was truly moving to watch on screen.
And no worries, there are NO rules, other than the person has to be, you know, a MAN. Heh. Btw, someone already wrote about Park Kyu, but don't let that stop you! If I wanted to write about PK, I wouldn't have let a previous entry stop me.
It so happened that I've written a lot about PK already. Time to other Team Park Kyu members wax poetic about him. Which he is totally deserving of.

Since the wait for Giant can be excruciating I just d/led the first episode of Great Balls of Fire, er, Balls of Desire… I mean Flames of Desire (oh just effit, I'mma call this thing Flames of Ambition already). The premise scares the bejeez outta me but then I'm quite partial to the cast, writer and the modern period setting. But this? Is 100% pure, unadulterated and dare I say indulgent; makjang. This is no Count of Myeongdong, maybe it'll work better if I can try and forget it's the same writer.
The first episode isn't the most original, the opening format is reminiscent of Giant's. The way it opens up on a dark night in the present day, with an intense confrontation between two people, and then we cut right back to where it all began in the past; a cloudless blue sky in Busan and a little girl with two cutesy side ponytails singing away without a care in the world. Plus, violin and Yoo Seung-ho? Isn't that…? Isn't that Kim Soo-hyun in Father's House?
Something about Kim Yoo-jeung freaks me out, it's her eyes… those eyes are not those of a child. (Like because of that photo I couldn't even bring myself to post a comment in that post about her being ''poised to break the space-time continuum''. -- Adore Girlfriday's snark, it's class.) And so the role she played was very fitting and she played it very well.
The acting is top-notch from Shin Eun-kyung overall, and a very camped out, goth Seo Woo as a tortured, self-pitying little miss, yes please! (I'm so glad she evaded the burning question or it would've ruined the entire show for me.)
And oh, Gangsters of Busan (yay!). Gangs of Busan (like Gangs of New York) are one of my obsessions. But unlike Into The Storm, they're just vile here, certainly not the charismatic black comedy maestros I adore and I don't think they'll play a key role here, they're probably akin to what the smuggling ring was to Giant; i.e. a very small plot device. But I'm going to watch this, all of it. Apart from episode 2 -- since the preview's pretty much given it all away. When I do pick up again, I'll be picking up straight from episode 3.
I like Shin Eung-kyung, she reminds me of Go Hyun-jung, a lot, it's just she exudes the same kind of confidence, the same kind of ginormous screen presence and they are both a lot of fun to watch. The difference is that SEK taps into her inner seks goddess er, who am I kidding, she flings it right up in your face, whereas GHJ has more of a tomboyish charm. Which is why from SEK and GHJ I'll be giving precedence to GHJ, until Daemul becomes too sucky to handle that is, but I somehow have some trust in the consistency of at least two of the actors and the writer, who's meant to be awesome. I wait with baited breath for Wednesday's premiere.

^ this is what happens the week a girl gives up milky sweet coffee for green tea.
I'm kind of wincing reading this back. I mean, I know what I meant, but then I forget this is a public place and people may actually read this stuff and the general tone is not what I intended, if I genuinely didn't like it, I'd say so, but that isn't the case... Guuhhh... Take two?
For what it's worth, FoA was thrilling and will keep going back for more. Show's unapologetic and that's a good thing. 'Nuff said.
Plus, I may have found Kim Yoo-jung a tad unsettling but she's no doubt one compelling little actress. )No really I mean it, I'm not just feeling bad for having picked on a little girl.) As an actress she is truly amazing.

Creamer with a dash of coffee?
I rotate through hot drinks, in a few weeks I'll add chai to the mix (I won't drink chai in the summer. Something with all the cinnamon and spices and stuff). I'm a tea elitist though.. if brewing loose leaf is elitist enough.

anyways, i understand what you mean about FoD although maybe i would have put it more mildly? XD lol. don't worry about your tone... everyone needs a place to pour their feelings out, and OT is here so why not? i'm watching FoD but it's dark portrayal of human character makes me have a serious headache whenever i'm finished with an episode. the first 2 ep felt like 10 or more...

What are you into these days? Yeah, that's totally how I like it, latte-like. I'm not a tea person though (only green tea and 'the a la menthe'). Coffee I can have in all forms, steaming hot or with ice cubes, topped with whipped cream and drizzled with caramel. All apart from maybe real hardcore stuff like espresso and maybe Nescafe-everything, 'cos Nescafe is for babies.
Have you caught up with this week's Giant yet? One word: EPIC! Can we rename the dogs-with-rabies to fithy cheatin' rats instead? Cos hotdamn have they stepped it up on both sides and one side has resorted to playing really, really dirty… like wow! ''How low can you go?''.
Plus you need to hurry and watch it to learn some cool 1980s techno dance moves. ''Just dance daaaance….''
@v
I'm sorry, who? Do I like, know you?
Janna, what is this V? Is it a bot?
Hahah, I kid. It's been ages! How've you been??
I don't know, I was curious about the show and knew I had to check it out at some point, and... it smacks of quality, and so is the 'arthouse makjang' I was hoping it'd be. There was a moment here or there where I laughed AT it, but that was purely at the directing. Not that I'm expecting any subtleties whatsoever. The biggest pluses for me are the two ladies SEK and SW, I will continue this once Giant ends (*sob* as I'll need something v. big and v. compelling) and in the same vein; President, as it covers the 70s/80s and the Gwangju riots, so that too should hopefully be v. interesting.

I was looking for a post here explaining the military service, in particular, why celebrities, in particular, put off their service so ridiculously long ... and trash their careers in the process, sometimes. It's like they never come back stronger than when they left, which is horrible.
I'm beginning to feel that it would make more sense to serve EARLY and then make a career for yourself at the GASP ripe old age of 24 or 25 or 26.

Eeep! I saw SkkS 11 and the shinee video back to back and now I need serious help. I don't know what the devil my mind will come up with next but I know it won't be sanitary. We are talking serious filth. I am so sad that it has come to this. :)
@Leonardswench
The reason they delay going to service is to create a fan base. If you were to start acting at 24 there are crap loads of idols and other actors who will have had a 4 year head start on getting their foot in the door. Look at Song Joong Ki. I first notice him in Triple, but he is only now establishing a huge fan base in SkkS. And unfortunately it is roles like these that create those wacky fans that stay with you forever, even through military service. The younger college age guy with lots of charm and lots of looks is that character that makes most careers start off. Harder to get that role when you are 24-26 and have less experience than the idol standing next to you with a huge fan base.
I feel bad for some actors that were good but didn't get that one killer role that all of Korea(at least the female populace) knows about before service entry, but that is life in k-hollywood.
Now if they go to service right out of highschoool 19-20 and maybe if they were a child actor before, you would be right and they should be fine exiting the military at 21-22. (Like Changmin of 2AM)

Well, for instance, is Jae Hee even still alive post-MS?? My daughters check for news of him DAILY and they're driving me nuts in the process. But it seems he hasn't gone back to his hosting duties, or started any projects, or done any CFs ... it's like he's a ghost.
And I'd think some actors/idols (Lee Junki, Jang Geun Suk, Kim Hyun Joong) can go whenever they like and they'll come back to screaming fans dying for their next project.
Others, it might be better to go early and compete as a 23 year old against 19-year olds, than as a 30 year old competing against all the 19-28's year olds??

He may also be relaxing before getting into anything big as well. After military service some may want to spend a few months with family and friends just hanging out doing nothing.
I typed in his name on Newsen and Naver for anything new on him. And the most recent post is from August when he went to a funeral?
Yeah, my guess is a girl. To go off the radar that far, he is seriously after a girl and wants to focus on that. Congrats to him and good luck! For your daughters my condolences. They still have SHINee and Suju to drool at though.

Aw, yes, they are hoping he gets married soon, but they want to see his next project (he's very funny and cute to them). Excuse me, A DOR A BLE!!! They'd read that interview some time ago.
There are only two Suju heartthrobs, according to them, Siwon and E.J. (short for Ethan Ruan, Jr., the little cutie Ryeowook with the high voice that looks like Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan's brother). In fact, they sing 'cutie, cutie, cutie, cutie' over and over to his voice no matter what he's singing (hilarious, but not helping their Korean language skills much).
As for other idols, I'm sorry, my girls are rather hopelessly fixated on SS501 (according to them, the only boy-man band where everyone is CAH CAH -- that stands for Cute As Hell Cute As Hell) and FT Island. SHINee doesn't stand much of a chance, they are full up. That said, they've promised to give them a good listen and lookover come the weekend.
Now off to drill team practice, jazz competition team practice, rehearsal, drama class, and festival rehearsal. Sigh. Back by midnight. :) I kid. It will be closer to 9 p.m.

Aww... Song Joong-ki. I am a fan.
Never watched Triple but I first saw him in his short-lived (mind the pun) but memorable role in WISFC (as Ji-yong-aaah!) and I remember likening him to Onew and Kim Soo-hyun to Key. Hee! Still can't forgive Nam Ji-hyun and KSH for what they did to him though. Stupid teen star crossed-lovers, bah!
Then, remember how much of a prick he was in OB-GYN?
Haven't seen SKKS yet, I'm banking it for when I'm in a sageuky kinda mood (have no idea when that'll be). Please don't tell me he's wasted in it?

He isn't wasted. He steals every scene he is in. and it isn't your typical historical drama either I really wouldn't classify it with the other "sageuky" things. It is sort of a highbred romance/comedy/action/historic thing. Closest thing to come to mind is Hong Gil Dong, and even then it isn't the same as SkkS by I long ways.

Anyways, I think he looks like an older version of Onew. :D Seriously. No, don't google image him as those photos do him no justice, you need to see him on screen. *melt* Just saw him in a 1999 drama where he has Onew's Lucifer hair, sans hairband. Move over Song Joong-ki, there's a new (old? Older?) dubu-lookalike on the scene. :p

As of this Sunday I allow myself one Giant episode a day. It is way to easy to main-line them and end up in no sleep land. So I placed this control break on things. I pray I don't go wacky and start ignoring my own rule.
So far the true difficulty is not posting like mad about every little thing I see. I now understand why you had such heated discussions on this show. It calls for it and regularly. I am reminded of going to see a good movie with friends and spending hours afterward talking about it. You kind of NEED to do that with every episode.
Every character has good and bad points. All the background for this mass developing nation in the midst of poverty and struggle. Sweet pete, I have seen this era done before from Korea and they try to capture what this show I think perfected.
Then you get this nostalgic feel of everything as it was. I feel like I am a little kid and i mean 3-5 year old sometimes watching this. The flashes of things how they were. woah! Was not expecting that to get to me. Tragedy, perseverance more struggles. Happy moments salt and peppered in but only to add color to something so big. The makers really wanted to paint the picture and they did.
As for the characters, the first 10 minutes says so much let alone the first episode. After that it is a roller-coaster ride of who's who in drama land. So far I haven't found a mom I like. Nor a dad, for that matter. No one is perfect or likable which i think is why I can identify with lots of them. The characters are all sorta realistic to a point. Yeah you have a few over the top drama scenes for the sake of drama, but nothing too shocking by Kshow standards.
I'm sure I will get more specific on you as I watch this. As i said I am already holding back huge rants about parents and double deals, murders and parents again!
Also I noticed this show can drain the color from your face and refresh you in the same sitting.

Cool, which episode are you up to?
I can't vouch for what's to come in the remaining 18 episodes, but certainly up to episode 42, it's consistently ah-mazeballs. You're doing well to watch it in smaller portions, that's truly the best way to enjoy it as you know, there’s a lot to take in.
Argh, yeah, now you understand how hard it is to restrain myself from writing reams-worth. They are all such exciting, nuanced characters.
It's important to understand the PD and writer too, though I'm not familiar with the writer (must watch Dae Jo-young), but definitely familiar with the PD. I've developed a keenness for Yoo In-shik. His values are in all the right places: there's something very unpolished and rickety about his work, it's packaged (relatively) modestly, yet he's ALL shades of cool, has a knack for picking some truly talented actors, respects the veterans, has a very unique flair for sly, twisted humour (seriously, it’s delicious and done well) which is assimilated into his work no matter who the writer, a disdain for glamour, cheese, overly pretty stuff, very rarely is he gratuitously angsty (i.e. you can trust him never to make masochistic angst-fests nor idol star parade shows). More importantly, he is ALL heart.
And with these values he has brought writer Jang's wonderfully evocative and intelligent writing to life. (Phew -- sorry, had to get that out, but guy's underrated.)
Make the most of the child actors, you're going to miss them. I don't think I'll ever be able to compliment them enough, all of them were beyond fantastic. They will continue to haunt you, as you'll continue to see shades of them in their adult counterparts, since they remain uncannily true to their childhood characters, in spirit and in characteristics, down to the teeniest of details.
Take for example the Gang-mo and Min-woo rivalry (have you seen episode 6 yet?) Gang-mo's first words to to smarmy asswipe Min-woo (who was then taunting Jung-yeon) were: ''shut your mouth before I pop you!'' http://www.hancinema.net/korean_drama_Giant-picture_125799.html?sort=Latest_Added_Pictures&typephoto=&episode= -- and er, yeah, a lot of things will change, but some things NEVER change even decades later. But it IS hilarious... seeing who can outschmuck the other. You have all that and more to look forward to. xD
Aaand... you see what I mean..? I wanted to keep that short, hah!

K as expected my foray into the dark side this time has gotten disturbing to say the least. I am attempting to upload 2 vids to mega in the hopes both will be out later tonight. Both are from SkkS 11 and both are adult! meaning no kids at all. I only used footage from both shows but the music has vulgar language. Fair enough warning.

Zhong Wu Yan is giving me so much trouble,I like both the secondaries too much. It shouldn't be like this at this stage in a show. You know who the main couple is and you know they are going to end up together but why does it have to be that way? The writers did too good of a job making them likable. It's not like I don't like the main couple either, that is what is making this even harder.
Dr. Champ is exceeding all my wildest expectations. I am cheering and sighing along with the characters and that was at episode 1. Now at episode 4 I am fully vested and want to jump for joy. Comedy, drama, sports. medical, romance show...I like it!
As for a video from episode 12 of SkkS. Honestly it doesn't need anything else from me. That episode was it's own music video. (complete with porn music. Seriously!) Hats off to makers of SkkS I never could out do you, but today I really don't need to do anything for even my own little pleasures, you did it all for me. *Great Big Hugs*

Daemul can only be described as two things: Camp and Ridiculous.
It's just not what I expected, though I've not read the manhwa so am unsure as to how true to the tone the drama version is.
My own fault really, I tend to gravitate towards the meatier, heavier stuff and somehow assumed this was going to be like that. Well ha-ha-hah! Joke of the century. *snort-snort*
But maybe I'll accept it for what it is and come to love it?
I mean, I love the cast, so many cool people and everyone is acting their butts off and seem to be enjoying themselves while they're at it. I'll watch tomorrow's episode and if I'm still sat headscratching and whutfuh?ing through it, I'll call it quits and go watch Eyes of Dawn or something, to get my fix of GHJ in super-serious mode.
So much for the stink some DBers kicked up saying they hate Daemul cos it's aimed at 'old people', they got me all excited for nothing. Hey, this twenty-something 'old person' over here feels she was robbed. Happy now?
But maybe I'll fall in love with show tomorrow and then feel silly for a comment like this... who knows?
Anyway, I'm off to watch Your Heaven, the Chuseok drama special (and it's about 'old people'!) with Jung Ae-ri. <3 <3 <3

But is it worth it? I'm working on buying Xmas gifts right now!
My son 'wore' Taekung hair again today, and someone in his gymnastics class finally had the nerve to ask why he wore his hair in pony tails *upper and lower, not two side by side*. He was very polite and said it was Taekung hair, to which, to whoo, he got the 'huh?, what's that?' questions, and he said, "From You're Beautiful, of course. You don't watch that show?"
I love it. And my daughter texted me "Park Kyu" and I burst out laughing in the mother's room, where I was busy watching Couple or Trouble again (episode 3). She said now she doesn't have to worry about swearing in front of anyone, because no one will know she's telling them off when she's just quoting Tamna Island. I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed, but for today, it got me laughing and I couldn't stop. I do have two other mothers who are watching CoT with me, one is Filipino and the other American, but now I have to wait and watch one episode a week .... grrr.....!!

Overall, I liked Tamna a lot, few quibbles and irritants, and really really had to get past the first three bad episodes, but it hit its stride and Park Kyu just melted all the women in this family, so it goes on the winner list. As for the daughter, she's texting Park Kyu because of the pun in the series, which means she can 'say' something naughty without saying it ...
Couple or Trouble is the 2nd watching (really had trouble getting through it the first time due to comparisons to its source material and other Hong Sisters work). Overall, I enjoyed it, but I didn't LOVE it. I decided to re-watch because it's been over six months since my first viewing, and I frequently pick up a lot more and quibble less on a second viewing. So far, I do find Jo Anna less shrill and irritating this time around at the beginning. As I said, we just watched episode 3 today and I'm only watching one a week. (Sob, it will take the rest of this year to finish!)
To be fair, my son also asks for Jeremy hair, Superman hair, Shaggy hair (as in, Scooby Doo), Beast hair (as in, Beauty and The), Prince Charming hair (Snow White) and Leader hair (Kim Hyun Joong). It depends on his mood and my patience and availability, because, honestly, that 20 hairpin Leader hair is a bit of a nuisance most days when my son's hair is neither thick or course, but blond, fine, and straight. He also likes his hair parted and pinned into his initials, and that hair is just so frustrating to get perfect, but then, it earned him a job once, so he asks for it when he feels like I'm in a really generous mood or when batting his eyelashes and kissing my hand like a prince would will win me over to spending the time to do the style.

He's 7, and into play dress-up and role-playing. It does help that we have drums and guitars and piano and keyboard, so he can act out Taekyung to his heart's content. But he's also Superman, Ironman, Batman, a clown, a Jedi knight ... you know, whatever the day brings. That said, he's totally hooked on You're Beautiful and My Girl.
And I'm sure he's that way because both older sisters perform, and because of the modeling. From the womb he's watched me do the hair and make-up on his sisters to get different looks, and, oh, by the way, I'm also a wardrobe mistress, so he's been in the dressing rooms since birth, too. Plus I have the mannequins in my office and we are constantly putting together new looks for something on one of them, including wigs sometimes, and since he knows he can't play with the real wigs, perhaps having his hair in different styles is compensation.
That said, if he wanted to have his hair in a buzzcut, I'd probably let him, although I'd cry to myself at all that gorgeous hair going to waste!!

You mean the potty humor isn't to your liking? Actually I find the potty humor always mildly shocking every time I across it. I think the show losses steam when it goes to Han Yang but love it when its in tamna. I especially love the strong diving women culture of Tamna. When I was a kid my parents had a statue of a tamna diving women that they had brought over from korea. I used to stare at it for hours imagining her world. I wish I still had it.
Anna is my favorite Hong Sister's female character though couple in trouble is not my favorite hong sister's drama. I love Anna's strength, matter-of-factness and logical mind. In some ways she is like the female HTK. The other hong sisters heroines can be irritatingly naive & self sacrificing. Yuck!
