Model Daul Kim dies at age of 20
by javabeans
What in the what? NY Mag has just broken the news that top Korean fashion model Daul Kim was found dead in Paris today, and while details are yet unknown, it appears to have been a suicide.
Daul Kim is probably Korea’s most famous supermodel and had worked a lot in her short career — she was 20. I remember watching her featured in Korean cable reality program I Am A Model, which followed the activities of working models. I’d also occasionally popped in to read her personal blog, I Like To Fork Myself, and found her often-rambling insights interesting and entertaining.
RIP Daul.
Via NY Mag and Omona they didn’t

Is money, fame and power equate to health, inner peace and bliss? Another shooting star is down!! My condolence to her family and friends!!
What the young, innocent and ignorant celebrities really need is to cultivate their spiritual and cultural intelligence.
Life is a gift!! When the feelings in the heart are true, then whatever the mind thinks will be right. When the heart is not true, then whatever the mind thinks will be convoluted!!

Could it have been some kind of accidental overdose? In some obscene way, I almost wish it was because the thought of it being a suicide just kills me inside. I don't know anything about this young woman -- I vaguely recall some reference on a fashion blog about rising Asian supermodels -- but the idea that she felt so much pain that she felt her only option was to kill herself leaves me shaken.
But then suicide just cuts me up anyway. Maybe it's because it is so, so, so completely preventable.
Seems that Korean women commit suicide more than men. There are similar trends in other Asian countries. We desperately need more support -- mental and cultural -- for women in Asian countries.
It makes me extra stabby to see all the negative portrayals of women in K-dramas. If it is a women-centered drama, expect cat-fights, bitch-fights, competition. Take for example You're Beautiful: The aunt -- a total idiot. The mother -- a total psycho. Yoo Ai Hee -- a total psycho. In contrast, the manager: a sweetheart. The president: a kindly guy. Shin Woo: gentle, unimposing. Jeremy: adorable.
And YAB is not even an exception.
Women of the world: YOU ARE LOVED JUST AS YOU ARE. Believe it!

A basic fact of life is that time goes only one way. We are caught in a present that is just an infinitesimal borderline between past and future. We have to live with a future that moves away as fast as we try to approach it, but onto which we project our present hope and fear.
According to Hofstede (cross-cultural guru), Korea is ranked as one of the Ultra High Uncertainty Avoidance country (85 out of 100) (next to Japan).
Extreme uncertainty avoidance creates intolerable anxiety and fear. High uncertainty avoidance is correlated with high suicide rate. It is in the collective national culture. Hence, it may be quite difficult to change the entire culture.
To survive and flourish in this sort of culture/environment, I guess individual (especially celebrities) have to find innner balance and inner peace through cultivating spiritual intelligence and cultural intelligence.

@Nom Kitteh: awwh. i love you for writing that [:
it really saddens me theyre saying it looks like suicide... i almost wish they'd find out that it was actually something else, because suicide just seems too sad and terrible to me. in high school, you learn things like "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." but i think you'd have to really feel that life was too hopeless, and that your problem wasnt temporary in order to kill yourself... and thats really sad. i dont know. the thought of it being a suicide is just too sad...

I don't know her but they had some of her video diaries on Huff Post and now I feel so sad. I hope it wasn't suicide. Maybe it was an accident like Heath Ledger and MJ. She was so beautiful and seems very smart too. A model who read Tolstoy.
What a tragedy.

This ___ sucks. She was only 20. Have no idea why she did this, none. Could rattle off a list of possibilities, but don't want to suggest where I have no business. Didn't know her, but the thought of suicide leaves me shaken, too, and angry.
I agree with Nom_Kitteh, the only way a girl can be loved, it seems, is if she's childlike and submissive. It gets creepier the longer you think about that. Really sad, this news...
@Agent Darwin~~Whoa...I could run with that, but my brain is now buzzing angrily and I haven't had any coffee.

It is indeed a shame to hear of so many beautiful people especially Korean ladies commiting suicide. I would personally hope that the police are using all of the forensic abilities available to them this day and age to prove that it is a suicide and not a homicide. It just does not fit with the people that are supposedly killing themselves - mothers leaving children behind and models with such success and beauty just getting her momentum. I can understand coming from an unstable country with the potential for war and uncertainty but that also creates a much stronger person/character - an acheiver, which these people have been. I think a closer look should be taken at some of the men in their lives to ensure that they were not behind these wonderful people's deaths.

I feel sorry for the ones left behind, I feel a mixture of anger and hopelessness towards the perpetrator, suicide touches more than just one person, mental anguish is a f_ _ _ing bitch, but going out in this manner is the ultimate tragedy. Not only Asian Females choose this way out, but in a Culture were self worth is base not on inner peace and inner beauty, the alternative will always produce a higher number of victims, it brakes my heart, may we all find inner peace, and may God have mercy on us all.... :o(

#34 pongs - "Could someone enlighten me on “hav(ing) to find inner balance and inner peace through cultivating spiritual intelligence and cultural intelligence.” ?"
this is just a high falutin" way of saying this ----- being thankful and finding happiness with what you already have in your life. learn to appreciate the little things in life - sunshine, rain, love of a child, tears, laughter, love of your family, friends, rainbow, a cup of hot coffee, a slice of cake, a good drama/movie, a good book (even a bad one), a beautiful poem (even a bad one also), a green joke, even the fact that you are still alive in this insane world should be appreciated. when you learn to appreciate the "little things" in your life you will find that no problem will be big enough to make you think of taking your own life.

Ini adalah gejala gradasi spiritual yang parah. Sangat memprihatinkan. Menyedihkan.

Its cruel spirit gradation. Great concern. They think death is the final way to walk out from their problem. But is it really ended? No. Because they will be reminded for long term as long as life itself. As a worse story, till the end of the world. Can't we make the best notice to remember? At least. The forget about the question : why we were born? Who is allow us to exist in this world? There is a great power beyond this universe to control. Who's changed night and noon, make sky without pillar. He is the owner of our life. We have no right to finished. They forgot for God. They have no possess in heart. They just believe on materalism, existent only. However, they are successful, they think failed, because they have no aim and concept, life is for. Sadden.

Life is only once. Like Lee So Hyun (Capital Scandal) said "Keep alive, to revenged bitterlife. Keep alive, illness make you will be stronger." It means: if you give up at all, you are weak, you nothing. And you proper to die, the world don't need the people like this. The future just be owned the strong people, who is faith in God, existention of him, faith in life circle before and after in the world. Actually, we should be patient, our time end had written before we've borned. Just wait fo while, it will be over all the way. Our duty is only make the best history on grace that God have given us. Life is too sweet to missed. Don't ever be sorry.

Whoa..this is sad. If she did commit suicide because she was overworked, stressed or depressed she should of seeked help like going to counseling or find someone to talk to about how you are feeling. It really helps if you let it out!! If you find it is too tough for you to handle, get out of that situation. Don't let it overcome you and take your life. It doesn't help you or anyone else. It just creates too many questions too many more unanswered questions. Most of all, your loved ones are the ones who really are hurt in the end.
Anyways, not to be mean but I don't think she is pretty at all. Just tall, lanky and has a nice facial structure but overall, for me she doesn't have that OMG, how pretty factor. Just my opinion, don't shoot.

wth? so many korean actressess comit this act nowadays, gosh is it the trend in their circle or what, no wonder old actressess have often more roles in dramas because there are less of them. Is there someone that can break that trend. they look so young, pure and full of hope, but inside they are so insecure, full of despair, and can't handle fame, criticism and competition. I really wish they grow up, the dramas inspire and help many people, they should think about it. sad Korea.
