Awards!

The 45th Baeksang Arts Awards were held on the evening of February 27, which means: lots of awards for film and television stars, and lots of clothes to gawk at.

There were no real surprises in the winners list; they’re mostly a variation of the same lists we’ve been seeing from the other ceremonies in the winter awards season. Some film winners include A Movie is a Movie and My Dear Enemy, while acting honors went to many of the Daesang winners from earlier awards, like Kim Myung-min, Moon Geun-young, and Sohn Ye-jin. Oh, and a little actor going by the name of Lee Min-ho took home one of the newcomer awards — but a stumble on the red carpet keeps him humble.

Sohn Ye-jin (My Wife Got Married), winner in the film category for Top Excellence, always looks chic and lovely on the red carpet. I don’t think the gown is particularly noteworthy, but the fit is awesome and she looks beautiful and polished, as usual.

Good lord. Moon Geun-young (Painter of the Wind) is a fantastic actress who only keeps getting better, but I am disturbed to see this obviously emaciated (and ever-shrinking) young star being lauded in the media for her “beautiful clavicle line” and overall appeal in this look when she frankly looks very, very sick. Shouldn’t someone… be helping her?

Kim Myung-min (Beethoven Virus) took Top Excellence for his Kang Maestro, as well he should. Though he’s going a little casual without a tie, I dig the double-collar look on him. He looks comfortable and relaxed.

Now, on the other hand, as for his Beethoven Virus co-star….

Really, the question here shouldn’t be, “What in the freaking hell is Jang Geun-seok (Beethoven Virus) wearing?” but rather, “This is Jang Geun-seok. At an awards ceremony. Surely you are not surprised by now?” This is just par for the wacky course for Jang. (If he’s going for Odagiri Joe-ish or Kim Jae-wook-ian eccentricity, um, it didn’t work. He doesn’t have the requisite “I don’t give a damn so bugger off” vibe to pull that off.)

It seems a little ridiculous that So Ji-sub (A Movie is A Movie) gets a “new” actor award, but eh. Logic is not a constant force in these awards shows anyway. Welcome back to television, dude. He looks dapper in this monochromatic, sleek black look.

Was it intentional, then, that his co-star and co-winner Kang Ji-hwan (A Movie Is a Movie) came in all white? Not my favorite look on Kang, but I think he manages decently. It’s not anyone who can do all-white and come off looking respectable on the red carpet.

Case in point:

That’s Korea’s resident alien and bastardizer of fashion shows, Andre Kim, in case you didn’t recognize him. (Although, who could forget once they’ve got that image burned in their brains?)

Congrats to Newcomer Award winner Park Bo-young, who is having a fantastic year with Speed Scandal! She’s one of the new crop of young actors who gives hope to her generation; she’s lovely and refreshing and has a bright, bright future ahead of her.

Her good friend and two-time co-star, Lee Min-ho (Boys Before Flowers) (like he needs an introduction), also took home a Newcomer award, for the television portion. Part of me thinks it would have been awesome to see him come in character as Jun-pyo (and not just because I think he rocks the curls like nobody’s business), but I do kind of love how simple and un-Jun-pyo-esque he looks here, with his slightly doofy smile. It does seem like he’s not quite used to the instant fame yet.

And I also kinda love how he actually ate it on the red carpet — then just brushed it off, laughed embarrassedly, and went to join his F4 buddies.

Speaking of F4: Kim Hyun-joong (Boys Before Flowers) looks pretty sharp in a tux — although, as with Lee Min-ho, it’s kind of weird that these boys look dressed down from their drama characters, here at a black-tie formal event.

Kim Bum (Boys Before Flowers) lost out the Newcomer award to his castmate Lee Min-ho, but he’s looking adorably happy here. No signs of his foot injury, either, so it looks like he’s recovered (or nearly recovered).

But I think that of all the F4 boys, Kim Joon (Boys Before Flowers) looks the smoothest in this setting. (He will tire of hearing this, I’m sure, but his resemblance to Jang Dong-gun is particularly strong on the red carpet.) He’s a little casual, but I like the little stylish touches — the skinny tie and the extended shirt cuffs.

On anyone else (except perhaps Kim Min-hee?), this could be a disaster, but Gong Hyo-jin (Crush and Blush) is a fashion goddess and she wears the heck out of this. I’m even digging the gladiator heels, which as a rule I HATE.

I get it! Han Ye-seul (Tazza) got tired of gown-shopping and opted instead to wear a giant jellyfish. Also, I am pretty sure that over-the-shoulder coy smile is her patented trademark. All other actresses, beware.

Er, not a fan of this dress on Yoon Eun-hye (Coffee Prince), although I like her hair and makeup styling. It’s just that the bodice looks so tight and stiff, like the material expended all its energy holding in her chestal region that the rest of the dress gave up and said, “Eh, good enough. Let me just hang out in the back here.”

Lee Junki (Iljimae) has found the look that works for him, and it is the three-piece tux. As an aside: is he growing out his hair? (Yay?)

Joo Ji-hoon (Antique Bakery), you won a popularity award! Would it kill ya to smile, Mr. Smirky Grouchypants?

Joo Jin-mo (Frozen Flower) goes formal with tails, and looks gooood.

Park Shi-yeon (La Dolce Vita) is really coming into a strong style of her own, isn’t she? Love the color and the bright belt — which looks classy instead of gaudily clashing — and this fits her absolutely perfectly.

Her Marine Boy co-star Kim Kang-woo ain’t looking too bad himself.

Bubble skirts can be iffy for an event like this, but this dress is so flirty, cute, and whimsical on Moon Chae-won (Painter of the Wind). Age- and event-appropriate. Love!

Once again, I must ask: This baby-faced Song Chang-eui (Scale of Providence) is supposed to be playing Kwon Sang-woo’s older brother in their new drama? Psh.

The gorgeous Kim Ji-soo (Women in the Sun) is stunning in red.

Han Ji-hye (East of Eden) is kinda working that Clueless-ian “Monet effect” — pretty from a distance, but up close all the individual parts are a bit off. The dress’s super shininess and color in combination are a little gaudy, her makeup is bland, and there’s nothing I LIKE about her look… but she still looks pretty. Just not her best.

Um… I kind of get what Choi Yeo-jin (My Woman) is going for. At the top, it’s severe Cleopatra-like structure, in the middle it’s generic cocktail fashion, and the bottom is shredded Pocahontas fringe. Put them all together and the reaction you get is mostly: head-tilt accompanied by a “Huh?”

Can’t you construct an entire inner monologue just based on the expression on Jung Kyeo-woon‘s (Women in the Sun) face in that last picture? “Hem… how much longer do I hold this smile? Sucking in… gut… killing me… Next time, wear a vest, not a cummerbund!”

Meanwhile, Jo Min-ki (East of Eden) is like, “Psh, all you young things, step aside. Let me show you kiddos how to WEAR a TUX.” And, well, he sure wears it like a pro. He’s kind of a sexy bastard, isn’t he?

I love modernized hanbok styles in general, and this is no expection. It’s also particularly appropriate on Kim Min-sun, given her role in the lush period film Portrait of a Beauty. (But… I wish it was in a color…!)

Not much to say about Park Hae-jin (East of Eden). Brush your hair?

Lee Tae-ran (My Precious You) doesn’t usually wear the most attention-getting gowns, but she does know how to style herself with class. She’s looking lovely.

Shin-ae (Empress Cheon-chu) always looks awkward to me at these types of events, even when she’s wearing a pretty dress and made up well. I wish she’d worn a color (notice a recurring theme here?) instead of more nude tones, which were so prevalent at this event.

Lee Soon-jae (Mom’s Dead Upset) and Park Mi-sun (Sunday Sunday Night) both won for their TV shows.

Love the yellow of Go Eun-ah‘s (Love at Sarang) dress, though I keep thinking the dress should be longer. Or shorter. And where did her foot go?

For a second, I thought Park Sol-mi (Cell Phone) was wearing the same dress as Sohn Ye-jin. Wouldn’t that have been embarrassing.

Hong Ah-reum (My Precious You) and Lee Young-eun (Oh My God 2) both do short dresses, but I think with vastly different results. Hong looks kind of forgettable, but I think Lee’s long-sleeved drapey number is adorable and fresh. Her dress = WANT.

Yet more beige for Boys Before Flowers‘ bitch trifecta, the “Jin-Sun-Mi” trio aka actresses Min Young-won, Kook Ji-yeon, and Jang Ja-yeon. They would have looked so much better in color! Instead, they look kind of like Charlie’s Angels, only, not in the cool-and-fun-kickass-heroines way, but in the whoa-the-70s-are-back? way. Individually, they’re not too bad, but together they all wash each other out.

Han Ye-won (On Air) is wearing a similar look to Moon Chae-won, but while I think Moon rocks her funky dress, Han’s is a little too normal to be interesting in comparison

And oh my goodness, Wang Seok-hyun (Speed Scandal) is like a living bobblehead of cuteness.

Congrats to Kim Myung-min! That hairstyle ..the same hairstyle as his current filming movie? It looks funny. 8D

Yoon-ah won the popularity award? I thought Moon Geun-young was way ahead, but that could be change since last I checked it was a week ago.

oh my gosh, the dresses this time are actually really pretty despite the many muted colors. I love Park Shin-yeon's dress...the color, the drapery, the way it makes her look so pretty! props to her! and the majority of the guys look absolutely suave and charming in all their suits. Lee Minho looks so adorable. personally i find him the most good-looking when he's wearing ordinary, not too gaudy, clothes. I'm not a die-hard fan of Lee Min Ho, but that cute smile of his does melt me a little. and as happy as i am for him that he won the newcomer award, i was really rooting for Kim Bum. he was so fantastic in East of Eden and i don't really think Boys Over Flowers is a hard enough drama to get a Baeksang award, but Lee Min ho is the best actor in it so i'm not entirely disappointed. but Kim Bum looks so charmingly happy. all the F4 boys are looking great! even Kim Hyun Joong who i've never really been a fan of.
one more thing: Moon Chae-won's dress makes me hungry for either a cream puff or vanilla ice cream. haha.

This awards show stunk to high heaven. Joo Jin Mo for best actor, and Viva! Love for best picture. Okay maybe Joo JIn Mo wasn't that bad in Frozen Flower, buuut certainly not in the same category with Song Kang Ho and Ha Jung Woo for My Dear Enemy. LULZ.

Thanks for the red carpet commentary, you should host a live show :) I'm very biased because I'm such a huge fan, but I think Yoon Eun Hye looks stunning--both her make up/hair and her dress. Girl is smoking hot! Son Ye Jin also looks particularly stunning (she was great in "April Snow").

And oy, Andre Kim... (shuddering while trying to erase all images of Andre Kim, his fashion shows, or anything he has created from my mind). Doesn't Korea have much better fashion designers it could present on the international stage?

I miss Hye Sun. I was so irritated reading news about Hye Sun over at allkpop.com. There seems to be so many anti-fans over there and there is like constant comparison between HS and YoonA. I have nothing against YoonA but it is really getting on my nerves.

I am so glad to see that there are people here asking where is Hye Sun. I think she will look gorgeous if she came for the ceremony.

Oh ya.. Love LMH. He is so cute and humble. I really pity him for his fall at the red carpet. With his popularity right now, you can really see the news of his fall everywhere. Hope people will forget abt it soon. haha..

I was seriously shocked after reading Korean news headlines about Moon Geun Young being a "clavicle beauty." It's mind-boggling that people could look at her now and think such statements, instead of first being worried about her health. It's certainly different from the American media constantly making headlines about thin stars who are "anorexic." I won't say that she definitely has an eating disorder, because I don't think such statements should be made lightly, but there is obviously something going on that needs to be addressed. And if it does happen to be a life-threatening eating disorder, I would only hope that people realize they should not be encouraging this (even if it is unknowingly). Hopefully this issue could be brought to light in Korea so that more people get treated early on...

While Miss Moon may be person on the slim side, one could hardly see her condition as anything near life-threatening. Though twenty some odd years of bon-bons on demand and 160 pound females is now considered as being the average, it is this modern reality, and not the former norm, that invites a persistant threat to one's health. Many years of being involved in fitness and athletics have revealed this reality to me when performance (or the lack there of) is studied with the aim of producing an optimal recurring outcome. Be the athlete male or female, if the outline clavicle is not clearly detectable with the naked eye....the player should have gone out for offensive guard instead of running back.

well, i think he should go back to the Goong look.

So sad for min ho, he actually fell!
I think he was pretty nervous in this kind of event that explains why he missed the step and fell. At least he fell gracefully(:

Uh, I like Yoon Eun Hye but where is her style gone. I mean her hair was a mess, her dress was...a bit...really poor!O.o WHY Yoon Eun Hye!? Do you have to be nominated to be goodlooking. We are not at a shooting where your messy style is cool. Very disappointing to me this Awards with Yoon Eun Hye.

Joo Ji Hoon where was your magical smile and please cut your hair...T.T I like you but you have to be well-groomed! At least his film is ruling!XD

Moon Geun-young scared me more than a bit!O.O She was/is so skinny and her dress did not the best to her figure. Eat more and get yourself help!

In my opinion, Shinae, Park Si-yeon and Son Ye-jin (as usual for her) were the most stunning actress of this ceremony.

Ah, and Yoona, she won 2 awards again after the two awards she get while the KBS awards, that's mean 4 awards, it's beyond belief, I'm very very happy for her.

Joo Jin Moo, looks sharp as usual, but yes I would like to see he cuts his hair.

F4 boys look dashingly hot... I never think that Kim Joon has some resemblances with Jang Dong Gun, but hell yes in those pictures, he looks nearly as hot as JDG. Hahahaa.

Joo Ji Hoon looks like some french-raised korean. His style is totally 'Frenchy'/'Italiani'. Has that got something to do with his role in some film?
And yeah, some people need to eat more.
(But sometimes eating more kind of doesn't help. I eat more than my sister but I'm underweight and she's like roundish-plump.)

My favorite dress is Park Shi-yeons's dress! I love the F4 guys they are looking so fine!! i was cracking up with lee min ho's fall. I love his facial expressions and how he just brushed it off and laugh. I love a guy who can laugh at their dorkiness and doesn't have to put up their macho vibe to hide their mistakes.. soo cute.. im not fond of kim hyun joong's hair it doesnt seem right to me.
Who's that scary alien looking guy? why is he in fashion? is he addicted to plastic surgery because he can probably rival michael jackson.

yoon eun hye dress/gown is disappointing..she keeps on appearing in fashion magazine as a style icon but she is not living up to what she wanted to portray...bad choice of dress...gown..i don't know how to describe it because of the short/long length..i hope the actresses who wear...fugly gowns should have watch oscars/emmys or golden globe in order to get some ideas on choosing the right gown ;o)..congrats to lee min ho....by they way, i like the gowns of the trio girls in BOF...thanks drama beans...

I like Moon Geun Young but I was shocked seeing her pictures. Her head now looks too big for the rest of her body.

Haha and Minho! He's just adorable...I probably loved him even more after he fell and just got straight back up with a grin on his face. But I probably felt all his embarassment for him + more!

Thnx javabeans for sharing these wonderful photos of the event! Congrats to all the winners & am so happy for LMH winning the Best Actor plus Kim Myung, Song Ye Jin & others. Where is my other fave Song Seung Hyun? he didn't win this time?

I'm loving Jang Geon Seok's look. It's like a cross between Buckethead, and a smiling hobo. His fashion truly speaks to our times. His fashion statement says welcome to the jungle baby!!

I actually find Kim Myung-min's weight loss more disconcerting than Moon Geun-young. He could pass for late 20s (good), but it also looks like Joo Ji Hoon is his dietician.

Moon Geon Young's poor posture accentuates her clavicle clevavage. That's not hot. Also I don't like the fake eyelashes and the makeup they've applied to her eyes.

I mostly like So Ji Sup's all-black attire (evil), as it's meant to contrast with Kang Ji Hwan's all-white symbolism (good.) The contrast looks pretty awesome (cheesy?) on stage.

Kim Joon's 80s tie really makes his look, and I thought he came out best among the F4. I felt the bowtie was wearing Ki Bum, and as you said, Lee Min Ho seemed to be dressing "down" opposite his fur-wearing cad alter-ego.

It IS a fashion disaster!! Gong Hyo-Jin, bless her alterna-heart, is the Cher of the red carpet. But, yes, I admire her ability to step out in looks like a dress 2 sizes too big, and what appears to be an Isaac Hayes pimp-dallion. It's all awesome.

LOL Perfect!!! I do love that color on Han Ye Seul though.

I liked the dress on Yoon Eun Hye, but I especially like how Yoon Eun Hye has really started to *wear* her dresses on the runway. In recent photo shots, she's learned Son Yeh Jin's trick of featuring a little cleavage and shoulders to complete a mature, glamorous look. However, I didn't like her slightly crimped fringes. I feel with YEH, you want to play off her full mouth and cheeks. This fringe, however, barricades her eyes and makes you focus on her nose.

Lee Jung-ki's 3-piece is a winner, but he's uhhh fitted real tight down there. Cough. I guess he wanted to reiterate that he's pretty and manly at the same time?

Joo Ji Hoon's pictures makes me realize how much he needs to do a stoner movie. I mean, look at his eyes, he's already rehearsing. :D

There's manly. Then there's Joo Jin-mo manly. Joo Jin-mo manly -- that Roman nose, the scandalous leer -- is what you see on the cover of bodice rippers and dream sequences involving Mohicans and Bonnie Tyler songs. He's gotta be strong, he's gotta be fast, and he's gotta be fresh from the fight!

Park Si Yeon's the best dress of the night. Though I thought the belt was a little large on her.

I didn't like how Moon Chae Won wore her meringue gown; She seems very self-conscious of short it was (much like Han Ji Min and her recent cleavage-baring dresses.)

Red isn't Kim Ji-Soo's best color. But she the blue-blooded one is the most effortlessly (intimidatingly) elegant presence on the carpet on any given night.

Among actresses, Han Ji Hye's my favorite at the modeling, and she's kinda settled into a solid groove in the gown department. Except this one. This is the worst look of the night. Kim Hey Soo, Han Go Eun or Choi Yeo Jin could pull this Venusian goddess look off. Not her. But her head is voluptuous.

I've always liked Jo Min-Ki, very classy presence. And I'm glad they're finally committed to finishing the show.

Kim Min-sun's way too thin, but at least she's standing up straight.

Love Park Hae-jin's look. Love Park Hae Jin. Since his break in Fabulous Chili Sisters, he's kinda become the emo boy of this generation. The look suits him.

I thought Shin-ae looks wonderful, and I also find it disturbing that she's had to defend her weight.

Go Eun-a's dress is the raunchiest. And I mean, that COLOR.

Aish! LMH! Such an elegant gentleman - even while tripping *smirking* Awww...

I am super excited now b/c this means this is just the first of many, MANY awards that BBF will be receiving in the future. WHOOO!!

And I love how Kim Hyun Joong shouted "KAMSAHAMNIDA" at the end of his speech. so nervous but so nice!

and love the colorful looks especially shi yeon's and men always look nice except of jang geun seuk and ji hwan, what is with the all white?

loving yoon eun hye's dress even if it looks so constructed like framework or foundation of a body.

Um, if not a wig, then is Jjang Geun Seuk prepping for next role as transex/cross-dresser? "What in the freaking hell" about says it all.

As for Kim Myung-min, I kinda miss his BV 80s-ish hairstyle. He looks strangely different in these pics.

And Lee Min Ho. Oh, just a huge dish of YUM!

I actually really liked YEH's look! It kind of gives off a glam-rock sort of look. And the colour of the dress is gorgeous! Her hand in the last picture looks really awkward though.

JGS: What on earth is going on in your head? If it's not weird hair, it's weird clothes. Can't you just look sharp for once! :D

Would have been nice if Kim So Eun and Goo Hye Sun had turned up! :) Escorted by the F4 boys of course...

love those women who had decided to wear colorful dresses- looooove park shi yeon's look. Sad that MGY looks so emaciated nowadays....and Jang Geun Seok-ppuuhhhlllease hire a personal shopper and fashion assistant- he's a great-looking guy- but his fashion sense is beyond horrible. Joo Ji hoon really needs to smile- he looks ugly without his smile. And Lee Minho looks so different when he's not Jun-pyo- he really is an awesome actor!
