Dreamy first teaser for SBS’s While You Were Sleeping

Wah, I’ve missed your face, Lee Jong-seok! We’re a little under three weeks out from the premiere of SBS’s upcoming drama While You Were Sleeping, which has recently released its first teaser. My first thought watching it was, “This is so beautiful,” and then I remembered that the director is PD Oh Choong-hwan, whose last drama Doctors might’ve been light on plot but was gorgeously filmed. This time around, he’ll have writer Park Hye-ryun to hopefully bring a more substantive story.

Lee Jong-seok (W–Two Worlds) and Suzy (Uncontrollably Fond) will star in the fantasy legal drama revolving around a woman who dreams of future tragedies and a prosecutor who struggles to prevent them from happening. The teaser starts with a chyron reading, “I saw you in my dreams,” and our two leads facing each other on a snowy night, both sporting injuries. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to foresee unfortunate events that will befall others and be helpless to stop them. Suzy’s character voices, “The fact that I saw you in my dreams, that you should do exactly as I say if you want to live. Why would anyone believe such nonsense? You can’t change it, the future.” Lee Jong-seok, glaring over Suzy’s shoulder as she holds onto him, thinks, “No one will believe it. The future that I changed.”

Suzy wakes up startled, and Lee Jong-seok asks her offscreen whether her dreams have ever been wrong, or whether she’s tried to change it, to which she replies, “No, I haven’t.” We see her in hospital garb on the wrong side of a rooftop railing, looking gaunt, while Lee Jong-seok tries to stop her from letting go. There’s a flash of a handwritten note reading, “my death,” and then she does let go as he fails to grab her.

Even if Lee Jong-seok does believe her dreams, it doesn’t mean he comes ‘round to helping her right away. He says that his job as a prosecutor is to mete out punishment after a crime has happened, not to prevent them from occurring altogether. He purposefully walks past her in a train station as he continues that no matter how much she goes on about her dreams, he can’t help her: “Whether or not someone dies in your dreams has nothing to do with me. It’s not my responsibility to care, either.” Suzy replies, “There’s no one else, except you.” Hmm, I wonder whether his intervention in her suicide attempt will be the reason why she goes to him for help.

The teaser asks, “If you could see the future in your dreams—that future, that time, that fate—could you change it?” Lee Jong-seok asks what happens next, and she thinks that time will flow differently. There are brief flashes of cherry blossoms, our couple on the beach, and Suzy desperately trying to help someone with a stab wound as he continues, “Differently, where? For better, or worse?” The teaser ends as they go in for a kiss and she says, “Only you.”

I feel like it’s been forever since reports first came out about Lee Jong-seok reuniting with writer Park Hye-ryun for the third time, so it’s exciting to finally see a glimpse of what the show will look and feel like. And I was surprised by how close the premiere date is as well: While You Were Sleeping will follow currently airing Reunited Worlds in SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday slot starting September 27.

Park Hae Ryun's dramas have many similarities lol :D
I am more concerned about that, just a day ago I watched him as a brutal killer/torturer in VIP and I was chilled( Heads up its violent) and to see him now in a romantic role, I cant forget that opening scene in the film ??

I really want to tthis movie because the trailer look so cool and I would love to see LJS as the bad guy because I always thought he could be a really creppy one. I like the huge different korean actors can be in a movie and in dramas, and when that difference is so huge I love it. I've been surprised by while in a drama for example they can act very shy towards physical demostrations in the movies they can go and so very sexual scenes, and so happens with violence.

I felt the same. I find LJS to be a decent actor but I feel like he plays his roles the same way so all of his characters are pretty much the same. It looks like a fan edit with scenes from his previous drama and suzy's UF

Its not that he plays it same way, he has diverse roles in movies and DS, its the writer who writes similar kind of stories PHR, which is why it seems like that. But this is only a teaser, the show might be something different, coz it will be a thriller not melo I guess

I think exactly the same thing.
The teaser is like a shadow to me. Everyone can form an idea of what they think the shadow is projecting.
The shadow projects an image of the object that may or may not resemble reality.
Same with the teaser. It's just an image of the drama. When the drama is in transmission, we can judge it correctly.

There was the falling scene (Doctor Stranger) and the lying-on-the-ground-in-a-white-shirt-with-stab-wound scene (W) and the cherry blossom scene (UF). Maybe they were hand picked for that reason? To remind viewers what they liked in past dramas?

I don't like Suzy's acting...just stone faced and flat deliveries....the last time she acted somewhere, script became real life and people got cancer (I know I sound horrible)...wish some else got cast because she can't act to save her life even though she looks good on screen. LJS is soo pretty to look at but I agree, does his roles almost the same...hey at least he acts, unlike suzy.

p.s. really really hope Kim Woo Bin gets well soon.

Some people liked it. It's not my kind of story, so my personal taste kinda got in the way. (I don't care for revenge stories.) But that one scene with the cherry blossoms was pretty.

And yes, I hope KWB gets well soon.

It is still a supernatural theme, and I think we all cringed hearing about Suzy's character's supernatural power and princess syndrome. No wonder it is so easy to have LJS's back here as an antagonistic hero.

I will watch this because I like them both, and no way a drama with a supernatural undertone can be worse than a full melo like UF. But I actually liked UF though, but that is because Suzy didn't annoy me in acting just sometimes while complaining or crying, so hopefully she has improved in this.

For her fans, it would be great to see her in drama which is understandable. But for a non-fan like me who only want to watch drama with at least decent acting - with her arguable acting skill, we don't actually that happy to see her leading a drama.

So don't watch it if you're unhappy. There are so many dramas out there so you can ignore this. And you're just an International viewers that will not add up to ratings?

You're not a non-fan but obvious hater. Pop your veins with envy and continue to be unhappy while fans are happy watching it and Suzy earning $$$...LMAO

1

@Boohoo - your comment is as expected from a Suzy fan. People are interested in this drama for the writer and lead actor, so it's natural that drama fans are interested but at the same time put off by the female lead because Suzy's acting is poor.

Maybe instead of popping your own veins at a drama fan for daring to criticise your idol's horrible acting, you can hope her acting actually becomes good.

6

you don't like the female lead, so don't try to watch it. Simple...

0

@pigsnout in this teaser, we all know that suzy improved a lot.. stop badmouth her and say her acting poor bla bla.... just give her a chance.. if you don't, then dont try watch this drama

0

I am big fan of LSK in acting skill too. N used to be swagcouple die hard shipper.

I'm big fan of Suzy, but more towards variety wise & her great personality. Not so much in acting skill, I agree with u in this. haha.

I'm just sayin I should just take this cast not for granted since I barely see her anywhre anymore, even it means not a great joy for drama wise.

6

@Suzy's Trash - how many chances you want people to give her? I gave the chance in Gu Family Book, her sageuk movie, UF....how many more?

'Give her a chance' and 'improved' are two words that are stuck on repeat in comments defending her acting but unless this PD and writer can do a miracle, her acting doesn't look deserving of lead roles to me. And calling me names will not make her acting better.

I'll give it a try for the writer; I liked Pinocchio but not sure how much I'll like this since it seems to have a more similar premise to IHYV which I didn't care for that much. I laughed when I saw LJS in the prosecutor robe. Not his fault, but I just have trouble buying it.

Also might I add that I'm keeping my fingers crossed that PHR and OCH are both collectively able to bring out at least acceptable acting from Suzy, because it is about time Suzy made a prominent actress in her own right. LJS in W really is hard to beat. (especially as it got into that mad rush at the end, and he seemed to get closer and closer to breaking--that scene when he's beaten half senseless and smiles at the sketchy congressmen is just so much happiness). But aaaanyway, tangent aside, I was pleased with that scene on the rooftop, and him yelling "no!" it seemed to have an intensity and different feel from some of his other styles. Hopefully this role will let him expand his abilities too! (I still need to see VIP, because LJS as a villain? I'm sold).

I just think he did some nose job, so for me it is not a major surgery and he isn't look that different. Considering they are Korean celebrities who are from a country which plastic surgery is so common, I don't know why some people have so much time in their hand to make a comparison how certain actors /actresses look now and in the past. As long as they are still look as a human in my eyes, I don't care about PS, although I'm not supporting it. I'm more interested with their acting skills.

Someone once said that in dramas, a good actor with PS is still better than a 'natural beauty' who can't act.

LJS looks like he had a obvious nose job but I still like him as an actor. He's good enough that after 10 seconds of watching him I really don't get bothered by his nose, his eyes make up for it.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think he does well with expressions, and I like him.

But my only concern is the drama type that may require 'over crying' from an actor. I actually think his over-crying is worse than Suzy. I don't know why...but whenever I see LJS doing the over-cry I tend to drop a highly rated LJS-supernatural-drama.

I still like him despite this and I do plan to pick up some of his dramas again and finish it. It is just the thought of his eyes-laughing when he is doing an over-cry. Even in something as 'cartoon-comic' feel like W, it shouldn't appear this way.

Now if LJS, his laughing eyes whilst crying, and Suzy, her pitchy scream whilst crying, can overcome this they are pretty good actors. Pretty and good looking too.

3

Ahhh. This is so sad!. Because someone always has to make reference to a plastic surgery ???
I do not say that your comment was malicious, because I honestly did not see it that way.

I love LJS as an actor (he is even my profile image!) and think he is extremely good looking. Did he get plastic surgery? I personally don't know, but why do people even care? I would personally never get plastic surgery for myself, even if I had the money, but I wont condemn others who do and want to improve themselves.

Also, not sure what people have against his nose haha. I find it adorable.

0

Required fields are marked *

Lol, whether he had plastic surgery or not he still looks good.

People only want to attack his acting as though he is practicing stoicism. It is why they attack his looks - questioning whether plastic surgery is the reason he doesn't emote better. But I think he is a good actor, he is just more quiet, I only have some doubts in his acting for his appearing as though he is laughing when he is supposed to be feeling down and emotional. I think it is actually him being in awe with the other actors in the cast. He seems to have this happy go lucky aura and it may be that someone's correct level of intensity in scenes with him makes him giggle. ~ Sooo adorable though.

I hope this will save me from my drama slump ever since LAHL ended. Also, I hope Suzy proves everyone wrong this time. In this teaser, I'm seeing that "wide-eyes-awkward-mouth-open" thing (in the first scene and when she woke up from the dream) again and I hope in the actual drama, she's already graduated from that.

In that last scene where they are going to kiss, there is zero chemistry between them, so artificial...I always thought that LJS had chemistry with all his co-stars, but here I am feeling disappointed already.
I will watch because I miss LJS ?, and this will be his last project for a while, but I admit after the teaser I'm less excited about it.
Maybe it also has to do with him choosing similar type of projects (supernatural and fantasy) and similar type of characters (always the hero that is sweet, has a good heart and a big challenge to overcome). I would like to see him doing something different.
I will watch anyway but I hope it does not feel like revisiting IHYV or Pinocchio, because I largely prefer Lee Bo Young or Park Shin Hye to Suzy, so I'd rather rewatch the others...let's see how it goes.

Oh.. I don’t think you need to have sexual tension to have beautiful chemistry. I mean, my mom and dad don’t have sexual tension 24/7 yet they’re married for 30 years and 2 babies (okay, adults now lol). So they had a different kind of dynamics in FBND, and Enrique Geum was supposed to be a sweet guy.
And I watched Doctors because I love medical dramas and Kim Rae Won, and oh boy they did have sexual tension, more than what PSH had in Pinocchio with LJS (who were more on the cute side imo), but again it’s maybe my bias ’cause I admit I’m KRW fangirl and he’s so hot.

Park Shin Hye had chemistry with her all costars in my opinion. In Tree of heaven, it is makes me cry to think about their love and Lee Wan and she had amazing chemistry and i hope they reunite. I love Heirs and drama isnt that awful people make it to be. She and Lee Min Ho share one hot kiss in the basement room i think. (since they were already a couple, i wouldnt call it forced kiss, especially with PSH's face was all blushed and she was responding well despite her previous ones with Yong Hwa). I love her chemistry with Kim Rae Won too, they had mature chemistry. Also with Lee Jong Suk, they have lovely chemistry where Lee Jong Suk was totally mesmerized with her. Cant wait to see another drama of this amazing girl probably with Yoo Seung Ho or Lee Hyun Woo.

@sweetsour I hope for the production team and staffs sake that LJS will be able to draw good reactions from Suzy. I think, judging by the trailer, Suzy did well. LJS is a okay actor (I really like him in IHYV and School 2013) but he is a bit repetitive with his role choices imo. I hope he’ll be a tad different in this one.

@urnaa I'm sorry, but I did not feel absolute chemistry between LMH and PSH (at least in their characters). It was LMH who was all the time behind PSH. And as for the basement kiss, it really was a forced kiss. PSH did not know she was going to be kissed that way. Here are the links of your interviews, in case you want to check.

LJS finally got PSH to do good kiss scenes. One of the best scenes I have seen was in Pinocchio (the hallway scene towards the end OMG, and the scene outside the restaurant<3) something that I think if Heirs was written better LMH could've done it too but we all know how that turned out, sadly. Anyways both of them are great actors, and I really hope LJS did the same with Suzy and her emotionless expressions

I like LJS from what I have seen from him.
I do not like Suzy, from what I have seen from her.

I have mixed feelings about the writer, and even more mixed for the pre-production.

And I watch the drama for the acting, not for the looks, so all those plastic comments are making me think we are in a teenager blog.

Just from the teaser, I feel like Suzy is playing her character from UF.

I know he had done plastic surgery but why to comment about his face again again it's their own life.we should only focus on his acting and being his I am proud to say that he can make me cry with his expressions and I love him.So if you don't love him pls don't comment on his looks ..plss

Speaking of crying ... I cried first with Pinocchio, with I can hear your voice, with Dr. Stranger and in W. I feel that I will need two things to see this drama: A continuous moisturizing because I already feel that I am going to be an OCEAN crying. And an additional request for disposable tissue packages. Hahaha

I live LJS, and I've been waiting for his drama but I don't like Suzy. I really hope she delivers a good performance and that it doesn't turn into another hyped drama that doesn't live up to the expectation (*cough* Heirs *cough*Legend of the blue sea *cough* ) I looooved IHYV and Pinocchio and hopefully LJS's character will be different from is previous jobs.

She seems to be doing EXACTLY the same thing as in Uncontrollably FOND. And that worries me ...
I wanna believe this will be good, because LJS is basically Magic in almost everything. But Kim woo Bin tried SO HARD in UF ... and it just sucked (although that was not wholly her fault, the writung and the pacing sucked HARD)
But I can't help but wish they had found another female lead ...I feel like she might ruin this for me.
