Park Hyung-shik confirmed to romance Strong Woman Park Bo-young
by girlfriday
Park Bo-young (Oh My Ghostess) finally has a leading man for her new drama Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, which has been in the works since early June. I know the show isn’t set to air until next year, but it seems like it took an extra long time to find her a co-star. The role went to idol-actor Park Hyung-shik (High Society), who’s been stacking up his filmography with prominent supporting roles in projects like Nine and hit weekend drama What’s With This Family. He just wrapped his upcoming sageuk Hwarang: The Beginning, and will be taking on his first big leading role in Strong Woman.
The new JTBC Friday-Saturday drama comes from PD Lee Hyung-min of Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki and writer Baek Mi-kyung of Beloved Eun-dong. There’s very scant information about the premise, and all we know is that Park Bo-young is playing the title role of the physically strong woman Do Bong-soon, in a story that represents women. Previous reports said it was a comedy-action-fantasy, but I’m still waiting to find out what the actual deal is, and whether she’s just strong for her petite size, or mutant-ninja strong.
Park Hyung-shik has signed on to play a “bright tsundere” character, which seems like an oxymoron, but I guess there’s nothing to say you can’t be a cheerful guy who’s prickly on the outside and marshmallowy on the inside. Who knows, maybe it makes him happy to be gruff to others. The character is a young CEO and a self-made man, which already makes me like him; it’s infinitely better than his spoiled chaebol character in High Society, that’s for sure.
I’ve liked Park Hyung-shik in his dramas so far, and I think a bright upbeat character suits his style. It should be a cute pairing (let’s face it — Park Bo-young is cute enough for two), but what I’m really hoping for is that the heroine will be as sassy as she is strong.
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon will begin shooting in October, and is being planned for a January broadcast on JTBC.

Bright tsundere isn't an oxymoron. Tsundere has come to mean more running hot and cold. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Tsundere) A really good example would be the male lead of Five Kids. (One episode he's swooping in like a knight in shining armor, the next he's telling her that she's inappropriately blurring the line of the work relationship. Fortunately she called him on his shit and he smartened up. ^_^)
Anyway it'll be lovely to see Park Hyung-shik and his fluffy locks of amazement return to the screen. This sounds like a good pairing!

I think what girlfriday meant by oxymoron is the 'bright tsundere' part, not just the 'tsundere'. Since tsunderes don't really give off the bright aura. :)

Excited to watch PBY again. Haven't watched Hyungshik yet but I knew he gets positive feedbacks from his acting (considering he's a acting-dol).
But why is the male lead character a rich prick guy again? Oh well..

He's pretty good in Nine and High Society. He is good on Heirs too b he was more of a comedic character there. I mean he have never been male lead before and yet he have already received an 'Excellence Acting' award defeating other male leads on the category. That's a good sign especially since Knetz all agreed with the result. Knetz normally hates idol actors except for a few good ones.
This drama and his other drama Hwarang who is he a second lead will be airing around the same time though. Hwarang will air last week of December. This will air early January. It will be interesting is they have same timeslot and they compete against each other.

jTBC has always been great imo. I have a lot of favorites from jTBC more than tvN.
I was hoping they'd cast a leading man at Jo Jung-seok's level or better because they could make a crappy script work.

Hyungsik will finally tackle his first big role, I'm so proud of him!! *applause* He so deserves it, he's one of the few idols turned actors who can actually act, he's really good (consider watching Sirius, Nine and WHTMF if you haven't yet) And his leading lady is no other than freaking Park Bo Young, one of the finest actresses in the Korean industry, no less...Plus, cable dramas are definitely more interesting these days. I couldn't wish for more. This looks super promising! ParkPark couple for the win! Thank you Drama Gods, pairing those two actors was sure a genius move *bow to you*

I loved hyung shik in WHWMF! He and nam ji hyun were actually the one who made me watch the drama from day 1. I do think hyung shik is more perfect in the struggling, hard working, menial labor kind of roles, as he completely nailed being one on the aforementioned drama. But yeah if he's a self made man, then I guess that's better than being a chaebol. But yeah excited for this drama now! And coming from nam jung gi pd this must live up to the expectations that's for sure.

"hyung shik is more perfect in the struggling, hard working, menial labor kind of roles, as he completely nailed being one on the aforementioned drama"
Considering that Hyungsik comes from a pretty well-off family in real life, that's quite the compliment ...it's true that he does tug at your heartstrings as Cha Dal Bong in WHTMF. His character is such a dork, you can't help but root for him. Plus his pairing with Nam Ji Hyun was fantastic.
As for 'High Society', he was the best thing about this drama. When I read the sypnosis for the first time, I was afraid he would play a chaebol once again (I don't want for him to be typecasted) but I must say I'm a bit relieved reading this news...it seems like he's a young CEO who built up his own company...thanks God, he's not some heir of some big conglomerate (because yes, there's a difference lol)
Also excited for this drama :)

Sounds like Je Suho from Lucky Romance. Which, come to think of it, can pass for a bright tsundere character as well.
He's one of the great leading man characters lately (not rude, not grabby hands, gives heroine space, respects her work, etc) so if Hyung-shik's character is like that, it'd be a good thing. :D

Ooooh! I can definitely get behind these two since they're so likable and I'm rooting for PHS for his first big lead role!! I think it'd be funny to see him be a sunny character and yet be prickly too! XD

Yay!! I think he's one of the few better idol actors and have liked him ever since I saw him in the KBS drama special 'Sirius' (soooooo good). He was winning in 'What Happen to My Family' and I only tuned in for his parts of 'High Society'. I'm glad he's finally getting another lead role where he can hopefully showcase the talents he has.

From cameos in Prosecutor Princess & SWP to scene stealing in Heirs and best 2OTP in High Society, my ZE:A puppa has wone over as an actor. If I watch Hwarang, it'll probably be for him.
I didn't realize the lead was what he was getting offered. ParkPark couple for the win. Slay, puppa slay!

This is super late reply but... I heard the booking term as slang in Yoona's Street. It's when you go to a club/bar and the waiters introduce strangers to each other(?)
It's not prostitution because you're free to leave or decline if you're not interested. I guess it's just an easy way to meet people if you don't know anyone?

Hyung Shik did come a long way. He should have been the prime example of idol actor who tackles smaller roles before eventually making it as the lead.

Disappointed with this. Park Hyung-shik isn't a bad actor when he's in a supporting role, but he hasn't shown anything that shows he can anchor a drama as a lead. He's average at best, and Park Bo-young deserves a better lead opposite her.

I mean he did stole the drama from the leads in High Society. If you read Knetz and Inetz comments especially Knetz most of them only love his character. His breakdown scene with his mom in HS received such a real time high ratings. Why do you think they gave him so much air time and scenes despite being 2nd lead?! He literally lead that drama. And HS did have good ratings. He won Excellence Acting award beating all male leads he was up against when he is only a 2nd lead. That is a huge achievement and testament to his ability. And Knetz agreeing with the result proves that since they normally hates idol acting.

@Krys11 Let's bask into the fact that most posters in here are positive about his casting (not only here btw). Heh, you can't please everyone ;) Let Hyungsik prove them wrong with one of his awesome performances, they might even change their minds after watching it... unless they skip the drama because of him, then it's their loss. Lastly, I wholly agree with your comment. He totally stole the show in High Society.

That's not an accomplishment. High Society is another example of problematic casting. None of the four leads put in a good performance in that drama.
They ranged from mediocre (Hyung-shik) to outright bad (Uee, Sung Joon, Lim Ji-Yeon). I'm not even sure why Sung Joon keeps being given major roles since he's a pretty mediocre actor in general.
I don't have anything against Park Hyung-shik. I think he's been decent in supporting roles, but major roles are a different ballgame. The fact is there are far better actors, and while the bar isn't exactly high in Kdrama, it seems casting directors are actively making it lower. It's especially worse now because we do have good actors putting in great performances whether it's veteran stars or younger ones, that it stands out when average actors like Hyung-shik are given lead roles. There's a gulf of difference in the ability of Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-shik. She's one of the better actors of her generation, and Hyung-shik is just another in a long line of average ones.
Winning a Korean drama award means next to nothing too. They're glorified popularity contests and a way for the Networks to reward whoever they want. It has little to do with ability and merit.

I had the same argument before I saw swdbs. Who is this nugu paired with PBY? But then, PHS proved us wrong and he won me over. The drama is a failure for me in terms of storyline but PHS’ performance is so good and natural. Will be looking forward to his next projects.

Really? I mean REALLY?!? Have you watched 'What happens to my family?' ? He was literally amazing in that drama and he was a far cry from being a chaebol in it, rather the opposite. He played your average working lad struggling to find his place into the society. Jobless, troublemaker and lacking confidence at the beginning of the drama, he managed little by little to straighten up his act and finally got his life back on track thanks to Seo-Wool's affection (Nam Ji Hyun's character)
