Kim Myung-min considers a stint in prison for next movie
by javabeans
No, I don’t mean he’s actually going to prison, although when we’re talking about Kim Myung-min (aka Korea’s Method actor extraordinaire), you never know what lengths he’ll go to in the name of character analysis. It’s still in early stages, but the ever-busy Kim (A New Leaf, King of Dramas) is lining up his projects for next year: He’s already signed on to the nuclear-power-plant disaster movie Pandora, which will be first up, and Kim is currently in talks to add A Letter From Prison to his list of engagements.
The film is about a man who is unfairly convicted of a crime and is sent to prison; he fights to uncover the truth of his situation while locked up and embarks on a revenge mission. That’s all we know for sure, but it sounds like a meaty premise and seems like exactly the kind of strong headlining character that Kim is drawn to. His reps took the cautious line in emphasizing that he hasn’t decided yet for certain, but some reports add that he was ready to sign on after reading the script, so perhaps it won’t be long before we hear final word.
Directing the movie is Kwon Jong-kwan of the 2005 Jung Woo-sung vehicle Sad Movie, and will be produced by the Keyeast-owned Contents K. That company has till now focused on television projects (past productions include School 2013, Secret, God’s Gift, and Emergency Couple), and this marks its first film endeavor. While it was previously reported that Bae Yong-joon (the largest shareholder of Keyeast) would be attached as producer, it turns out that that was jumping the gun; he’s associated only in the sense that Keyeast is connected, but won’t be taking a role in the film.
A Letter From Prison plans to begin filming in the first half of the new year.

Whatever project he does, I just hope it will be DaeBak! CMS got all the glory from MyungRyang, but KMN is still my general Lee forever and ever. JangGoonNim Fighting! (Oh I saw they had 10 year anniversary fan meeting/party on Immortal YSS DC site- IYSS was aired on 2004-).

I don't care if it's a movie or drama, so long as he is still acting. The day he stops acting will be the saddest day for Korean entertainment, period.

If Korean prisons are anything like American ones, I hope our Method Actor Extraordinaire has a shrink lined up...The half of me that's not fearing for his mental health though would like to see him in this movie.

My favourite drama of his is Bad family or Fake Family Service. It's absolutely hilarious and one of the best family comedies I've seen out of Korea.
King of Dramas is another interesting show giving insights into the drama behind dramas

Oh, that's a shocker. Watch Beethoven Virus, chinggu, he is daebak there. You're gonna love his Maestro Kang character. And don't leave Earth without watching King of Dramas. It is a glimpse of what the k-drama industry is doing behind the scenes. You should love this because, as you said, you watch many korean drama.

Oh you have at least watch one drama from him. He's really great actor!
Watch King Of Dramas, Beethoven Virus, or the latest drama A New Leaf. He's always memorable in every role he's in.

I fall in love with him in Bethoven Virus. Maetro Kang in my opinion is still the best conductor in kdrama land ever. You might also love him in King of Drama. His other drama is Bad Family which I haven't seen yet and White Tower.

I'm just going to join in and throw another suggestion in here--he's completely amazing in White Tower (which is also one of the best Kdramas I've ever seen). If you want to see him at his absolute best, that's where it's at imo.

Oh, yeah, anything Kim Myung-min requires 100% of my respect and awe. In which case, I highly recommend "King of Dramas" as the star drama for all season, THE ABSOLUTE BEST, while "A New Leaf" the great waste of KMM talent because of sloppy writer who kept writing non-sober.
This news made my day, and I am quite looking forward to it. Though may some people agree with me? KMM must do a romantic comedy, pronto! KMM, while you create your 2015 project lineup, please consider a drama, ROMCOM, leaving us fangirls satisfied and on cloud nine!
Oh dramagods, please make my dreams come true. Create an Anthony Kim who will persuade Kim Myung-min to do a romcom, with Kim Tae-hee or Song Hye-kyo! Oh! KMM!

I really hate to bring this up, and I do it without malice. Is it possible that A New Leaf did not fail you but you failed it? Many viewers in Korea, and virtually all viewers in the US, did not get it. A New Leaf could have dumbed it down several notches for mass appeal. But it didn't. The writing was superb, the execution was fast-paced and tight, but the plot required much higher intellect on the part of the viewers. Oh, for the non-speakers of Korean, I can see how trashy subbing might have contributed to the problem.

Well I enjoyed it. I wish a few plot points got resolved better near the end but for the most part I think it did what it set out to do. I don't know if I necessarily want him in a traditional rom-com; he's too good for that. I can be persuaded if its satirical or dark though. Can he please be paired with the prosecutor from New Leaf though? I think they'd have chemistry in spades.

I agree that he'd be wasted on a rom com, but one of my guilty pleasures is seeing higher caliber actors roped into less serious projects. For instance, I had a blast when Jang Hyuk did FTLY (that show had problems but he certainly wasn't one of them). Not sure I'd put him on the same level as KMM, but still. Maybe for KMM, I'd accept no less than the best rom com ever, opposite the queen of rom coms herself, Gong Hyo-jin? haha idk. Something dark and satirical would be good though.

I apologize sincerely, Dr. Hwata, for our conflicting opinions on ANL. Though I would have to state that I am one of the people who followed the drama sincerely and with great excitement. But the rush on the ending, which caused shrinking of 2 episodes, was really tight and many loose ends were left loose. Kim Myung-min is the GREATEST LIVING ACTOR in my opinion, and I consider him the BEST OF ALL-TIME (classics actor included) and you're quite right I lack the intellect, that's why I failed ANL as u stated. :-)
In any case, haha, KMM in a romcom is still my dream, though, you guys are quite right, he's too good for a romcom. It would have to be REALLYREALGOOD for KMM to sign in on it. That's why it's my lifetime wish! Gong Hyo-jin is not necessarily my type for him. But if it's Kim Myung-min, I'd still give it a go. Everything's good with him. He makes it perfect! (KTH or SHK pls) ♥

I'm gonna start A New Leaf. I didn't start it because I had heard that it ended badly. If the ending is not that bad, I'm gonna watch it!

A New Leaf was great, but it truly ended badly. I enjoyed all the scenes thoroughly, but the ending was way too rushed. Abrupt and incomplete, to say the least.

Funnily enough, I thought ANL was exceptionally well-constructed and would have fit comfortably in the space of 18 episodes. Cutting that down to 16 did cause the show to end pretty abruptly, but I was just happy that the KMM character approached the final case with the aim of making the world a better place (as opposed to just wanting to win, or to atone, or even to help his dad). I guess I didn't need to know whether he married his fiancee, got his memory back, etc. Btw, the subtitles weren't perfect, but they were a splendid - nay, heroic! - effort for a show with so much legal and financial jargon.
As for KMM himself: I don't understand why he doesn't seem to get the kind of film roles that, say, Song Kang Ho gets. Is it because of his own choices, or because he's too closely associated with TV dramas, or because he's just not regarded as a film actor of the first rank? Not that cinema is in any way better than TV, of course. But, for someone who is obviously hoping to have a career in film as well as on TV, KMM has been in quite a lot of, er, kinda mediocre films that don't show him at his best. Can anyone shed some light on this?
