Sighh me too! I can't concentrate because of SKKS and Playful Kiss! Should have just waited till after my exams...which should be over in 2 weeks time. :D
Anyways, I have to say, eps 6 and 7 of SKKS were the best episodes EVAAR! My fave moments were:
1. When Yongha rescued Jaeshin from the guards, and the school chancellor thanked him by smacking his butt multiple times
2. When the Joseon F4 was formed. 4 pretty boys walking in a line, smiling and looking confident
3. The whole archery (Dae Sa Rae) competition. It was wonderfully edited and full of suspense. It totally wasn't obvious (to me, at least), that Daemul would have won.
4. When Jaeshin found out Daemul was a girl. OMG how hilarious was that!
5. Yongha and Jaeshin's bromance + Sunjoon and Daemul's blossoming friendship
Sighh. and i havent even started on playful kiss yet..

I'm lucky that MGIAG is the only Kdrama I'm avidly watching right now. I'm vaguely meandering through several others, but I'm getting fatigued. So when MGIAG ends next week, I'll be taking a one-to-two-month-hiatus from Kdramas and catching up on my reading and my Netflix instant watch queue, which currently has 183 items, and considering that half of them are TV series, I have over 1500 hours of viewing material to begin plowing through. Yikes. At least I won't need subtitles for them.

PK is turning out to be such a totally cute & engrossing drama..never mind the ratings & all...KHJ has improved by leaps & bounds & JSM is definitely stealing the show!!! LOVE IT!!!
Still not through watching MGiG, but it just confirms that the HONG Sisters are the BEST, this side of KDrama writing!!
I Am Legend's ending was so-so,not really outstanding...but love their OST!!!
Baker King's finale also didn't quite "rock my boat"...
Am looking forward to "Gloria" because of the Lee Chun Hee & So Yi Hyun tandem..
Giant is an awesome epic drama, I love despite the long wait for subs to be available..

*Gender Bending*
In an age where people used the word “Equality” very loosely I am very disappointed at how dramas like “ Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Coffee Prince, You Are Beautiful”,etc, etc, used the
“gender bending motif” as the background for two “straight” people to “Fall In Love”.
I personally do not like it at all, the reason being is that in the above mention dramas, as the case is presented,
one or two, or three in the case of “You Are Beautiful and Sungkyunkwan Scandal” more than one guy fall “romantically” for the “Effeminate Guy”,
am I a “Homophobe”? I am not!!!
I do not have a problem with a “Bro-mance” at all because man do have the capability to “bond” at a deeper level with other man with out having a homo/erotic nature.
What I am talking about is the “implications” that in a “Normal” setting takes place when a man develops “romantic feelings” for another man, and I do feel that the way this dramas used this premise “Cheapens” the whole “Homosexual/Lesbian” experience.
Coffee Prince is the only drama where we see the male lead
“agonizes” about the fact that at the end of the day he may be “Gay”, and in You are Beautiful, we see that Jeremy do fall for Go mi nam as man, since he was the only one to find out at the end that she was a girl, and now for all intended purposes Sun-joon is falling for Yoon-hee as a “Man” not as a woman since he does not know “that he is a she”.
I personally find this interaction offensive from the stand point that most of us now (Straight) people what the implications are if we started to have “romantic”feelings for some one that shares our same gender.
Like I said before since we know ahead of time that the “He is a She”, it is easy to justified the way Choi Han Kyul fell for Go Eun Chan, the way Jeremy fell for Go Mi Mam, and now the way Sun-joonis falling for Yoon-hee, but let us assume for a moment that the “He is really a He” will we be rooting with the same fervor for their “Romantic Experience”? If not I guess is time for us to take a second look at the way we “see and judged Homosexuality!!!!!!!

Count me in..... I would really have been rooting for them even if there were only males involved in the story....I guess we are now in times where we can overlook the "difference/similarity in gender" issue.....love transcends all
however, i don't think there is anything wrong with the plotlines of these stories.... i dont think they want to bring out the unsuitability of homosexuality even in the remotest way......the fact that eventually both han kyul and jeremy accepted their feelings for the lady disguised as man, proves this

I personally love gender bending stories. I think the first one I ever saw was a soccer movie called LadyBugs or whatever with Jonathan Brandis, and I thought it was the best movie ever for a very long time.
I don't think that it is a comment on the inappropriateness of homosexuality. I think that if "he is really a he" we would still be rooting for them. One of the stories about gender bending, Hana Kimi, had two characters in the manga that were both homosexual or had homosexual moments, and I rooted for both of them (the doctor and one of the students). I wasn't fond of the fact that when the series was done live action the student became a joke while the doctor magically was cured of his homosexuality, but in the manga it was tastefully done and I loved it.
In SKKS, there would be less of a story if Yoon Hee were not a woman, and I think that YB wasn't meant to inspire deep thought on the nature of homosexuality or the morality that goes along with it.
Besides, there's some sort of Asian movie... something about Frozen Flowers or something, that really addresses homosexuality quite brutally.
My point being that I don't think that homosexuality is ignored. I think that it would not appeal to the targeted audience and sell as well, which as we all know with our obsession over ratings, is the end goal.

It may be just me, but in my case I don't keep in mind that "she is a he". I don't. I root for the character, for the person that interacts with others, for the human being that falls in love and has their love reciprocated.
I enjoyed and anguished about Coffee Price so.much.more because I kept forgetting Eun Chan was a girl, because Han Kyul's pain was almost too real - and when he realized the truth and felt hurt, I also wished along him that "Eun Chan's lying, he's not really a girl".
There's one gender bender drama you've not mentioned, Painter of the Wind, where the girl (who practically grew up as a boy) is attracted to another girl. And guess what? I also rooted for them, even if I knew they weren't going to be together at the end.
"You're Beautiful" isn't my favourite as a gender bender, because indeed Go Mi Nam acted just like a girl, but Coffee Prince, Painter of the Wind and Sungkyunkwan, they show women who are more masculine, who behave in a different way of the norm - and it isn't *despite that* that men fall for them; it's *because of it* that they do.
Just like the Professor tells Yoon Hee: "Inside the Sungkyunkwan walls, you're not a girl".

i think although these girls are disguised as males, they cannot hide their "feminineness." it's all a case of biochemistry. the guys inhale/detect the girl's pheromone scent and are therefore subconsciously attracted to her.

For me nothing is wrong. speaking scientifically, when a female attracted a male they develop a certain scent that make you fall in love. well my english isn't good so explaining this is really hard.
For example in SKKS, the ginseng that fall in love with the girl disguise in guy, is called the complex of oeudipe. she is obviouisly in love with herself and try to find someone who can understand her.
about SJ falling in love with YHee, I found it normal. He is overlooking her apparence as a boy and fall in love with the personn she is in reality and in fact YHee act a lot like a girl. She has the same sensibility and the same way of thinking. Even if she tried hard to be a guy she can t be totally. Now ask why SJ didn t fall in love with YHwa? or why the other guy didn t fall in love with YHee. Two people are a match cos they produce a scent which is only readable by those people..huhuhuhuh..Science can explain what feeling cannot..hehehehe

I love how absolutely unpredictable OT gets sometimes, from the utterly silly (guilty!) to the the deeply existential, as per this question on the nature of love!
I can't resist this gender bender topic, since my namesake was one of the more successful at it in Western literature! Yes, I am biased ;)
In S scandal, I got so swept up in the story that I was actually surprised at the bath scene, I had this moment where I had to remind myself that "oh yeah, she is a girl!" I was completely involved in her growth as a person, that her gender was besides the point. True, I enjoyed the occasional giggle at Moon's hiccuping expense but since this drama is more than a simple love story; be it between boy boy, boy girl, or girl girl that the gender of the lovers doesn't really matter. But a girl pretending to be a boy does add another layer of conflict and heighten the narrative tension. It's one of my favorite tropes 'cause it makes such a darn good story!
For me personally, Love (yes with a capital L) is a deeply complex thing independent of gender. If we could just blame love on the neurotransmitter Oxytocin and called it a day, think of how much simpler and poorer our world would be!

Am at work right now debating the widsom of shutting my office door and watching the new episodes of MGIG...I'm trying to stave off the temptation but failing miserably. The show is calling to me!
Last night while watching Playful Kiss the thought ran through my mind (not for the first time) that it feels in some respects like an American family sitcom - the atmosphere of the show seems similar, and the lack of a strong story thread is more suited to the long-running format of American television. This is one of the first times I've felt like a k-drama could be adapted for American television without too much adjustment.
Hope you all have a great weekend! My mom's in town visiting me so we have fun planned...plus, the weather is finally feeling like autumn and I'm so happy about that. All my love to all of you...especially the recappers who bring so many smiles to my face during the week!

I agree. It seemed ridiculous that MiHo would even accept DW's flimsy excuse. I mean the man clearly gave up half his life for her in episode 13, and suddenly in 14 they decide on a forced separation. But since episode 13 was just so amazingly good, I'm willing to let that slide.
Either way, next week is the make it or break it moment. If there's a repeat of episode 13, sign me up for the DVD but if it's going to something as terrible as 14, then yeah, I'll have to pass.

Oh my Lord, yes!
****MGIAG episode 14 spoilers ahead****
I could not BELIEVE my eyes when I realized that Dae-woong was going to be, in the words of Javabeans, "a noble idiot" and break Mi-ho's heart -- and his own -- in the name of keeping her safe and protecting her. I was too tired to yell but I was all, Dae-woong, did you by any chance watch yourself in the last episode? You gave up HALF OF YOUR LIFE for that girl because you couldn't live without her, and you couldn't let her run away from you and shoulder her burden alone. And now you're doing this nobly-suffering-in-silence nonsense? Go back and watch the last episode and get your characterization back!
I was a bit disappointed because I was so sure that we weren't going to have any of that enforced separation ridiculousness. This drama has been consistently above-grade in all respects, so I hated this reminder that even the best drama writers will utilize inorganic shortcuts to product angst. Regardless, I'm in it until the end. They're allowed to have one hiccup. MGIAG is still one of the best dramas I have ever watched and it has me completely in its pocket. Maybe episode 14 it'll be better when I re-watch it tonight with subs. But I'm certainly expecting Girlfriday to remark on that one.

Honestly I was expecting this show to be absolutely phenomenal till the very last few episodes. Because that is where the Hong sisters usually loose me and in a gigantic way. You're Beautiful, I squealed at like a little piglet in happy marinade until about episode 14 when I realized they were going to place lots of emphasis on the wrong things and split our main couple.
Hong Gil Dong could have been the single greatest drama ever made if not for the bizarre ending which left me throwing things at my monitor and venting uncontrolled at friends for weeks. Why build up the secondary relationship as this tragic alternative for so long and not use it. Why? It still makes me mad.
My Girl is still the most romantic drama of all time in my opinion, but it also has odd pacing for the last few episodes. Weird unwanted scenes that just pop in for no reason.
It's like these sisters have a other worldly premiss and skills in telling the main story but flip-out and become wing-nuts to end things. Sad to say I was expecting 14 to be not the greatest. I was only please as punch that episode 13 was so fantastic. In my head that is where the series shall end.
Java, You definitely won for reviews this week.

Absolutely. It sort've feels like the Hong sisters either run out of steam or bow down to kdrama cliches. My only hope is that they turn the whole thing around in episode 15.

Hah. No, I wanted Dae-woong to go back and watch himself in the previous episode. Crazy boy apparently forgot who he actually is. He's always upfront and honest and he forgot that, so I thought if he watched himself in the previous episode, he would let go of the noble suffering stupidity he brought in episode 14.

September 24, 2010 at 5:09 PM
Can I put a different spin on this? What if it's not so much suffering in silence as it is that he still doesn't understand the concept of communication? I mean, he's doing the same thing that Miho did - withholding information in order to protect the other person (at least, that's what they're doing in their minds). They both need to come to a point where they realize that talking it out and solving the problem together is better than not doing that, despite what they believe. It's possible that for Daewoong, ep 13 was about proving his love for her and giving up something in an attempt to save her life, as opposed to meeting her halfway and fixing stuff together. This is what WE all know (or thought) it to be, but it hasn't dawned on him just yet. He's learned how to care about another person, but he hasn't learned how to share burdens with them. I mean, we humans are fickle, we're constantly giving advice that we don't take ourselves - in light of all that, his apparent turnaround doesn't seem weird at all.
It does seem like the Hong Sisters orchestrated the whole thing just to have the trademark k-drama separation, but I think that by flipping the situation both ways, they manage to show that Daewoong and Miho are still new at this whole love thing, and still have some growing to do.
Okay, dissertation done. Have a good weekend, everyone!

OK, I've watched episode 14 again, this time with subs. On second thought, Dae-woong wasn't being a total dingbat. Yes, the hurting-her-for-her-own-good bit was awful and horrible to watch (God, he was so mean), and the separation was heartrending, but now I'm not sure that Dong-joo gave him much of a choice.
There's the obvious bit where Dong-joo said that if Dae-woong stayed by her side, Mi-ho would slowly lose more tails until she died. So the obvious choice would have been for Dae-woong to run and tell Mi-ho that they would have to split up until the 100th day, and I do believe that he would have done that right away. Honesty has always been his modus operandi.
HOWEVER, according to the subs Dong-joo also said that Mi-ho had to not only be apart from Dae-woong, but that she had to completely lose all hope/longing of becoming human and being happy with Dae-woong in order to survive. Only in losing the actual longing to become human could the deaths stop. And we all know that THE ONLY WAY for Mi-ho to no longer care about becoming human would be for her to believe that Dae-woong no longer loved her or wanted to be with her; that he really did see her as a monster. And THAT is why Dae-woong had to completely break her heart. If he'd said, "Let's split up for now so you're safe, and then I'll come back for you," her heart's antenna would still be pointed toward him, the longing would still be there, and she would continue moving towards humanness -- and death. She needs to not want it, which means she needs to believe Dae-woong no longer wants her.
As such, it worked for me. I still do not like that the writers chose t go the angst/separation route when these kids have enough real problems, but now I can understand the rationale behind Dae-woong's noble suffering and I don't mind so much. Well played, Hong Sisters, well played.

Hi folks, first time commenting on OT, couldn't resist seeing as the topic being discussed was about my current drama-love!
Ep 14 broke my heart, thought the forced separation trope was too cliched when it came into play again, just as I thought the Hong Sisters were finally gonna give us something completely awesomepants and different.
But i did watch it without subs (non-korean speaker) and now that I've seen your responses it makes much more sense. Not that I like the decision Dae-Woong made, but at least I won't spend the next week stewing in discontent over the noble idiot decision he made while waiting for new episodes to come out XD
Still LOVE MGIaG though, hope the finale does the rest of the series justice!
Thanks for your awesome insights and discussions! It's so much fun dissecting k-dramas beyond the superficial and this is what makes Dramabeans so awesome! Have a good week everyone. =)

Still say the Hong sisters didn't have to go there with the breakup. Have any of you seen Chrono Crusade? Almost the same romantic plot line, but done infinitely better at the end. Their life depends on the other and their love makes them want to sacrifice all for that love. Emotionally speaking, I was happy, sad, and romantically moved to tears by that ending. I cried for 30 minutes straight and the makers deserved every tear I shed. Knowing that this type of plot can be done that well, I am disappointed.

I agree. I am NOT happy that the Hong Sisters went the breakup route, but at least they gave Dae-woong a damned good reason for the noble suffering schtick. Now, as to whether or not Dong-joo is lying, I have no idea, but there's nothing else Dae-woong could have done in this situation, going on the information that he had. Still, I do wish it hadn't happened this way. Le sigh.

I was not interested in Playful Kiss at all until I read a few of your recaps. Kim Hyun Joong surprisingly won me over with his decent acting in the last couple episodes. His messy hair provoked me to watch an episode of WGM. Now, I'm a fan. Let's hope it all goes well for him and the show.

i know u may say this is an old drama but i had to see it coz of my love & admiration for Kim ji hoon it's called How Much Love....woah this drama is soooo good altho it's lengthy, it's just so sad that it's not avail. online - however i had to resort to a dvd w/o subs & somehow i can follow through & didn't realize Kim ji hoon has a nice singing voice, i'm almost certain he was not lipsynching (spell?). Beautiful love story altho i hvnt finished but it's really worth my while --- it's one of those addictive dramas! I've seen a number of Kim's prev. projects & i can tell you all of which have been really favourable in terms also of his acting skills! This guy can cry, be funny & all that! Of course one of my faves wld be Stars Falling.
Happy w/end to you JB & all here!

Happy Friday!
I am hooked on the TW drama : Zhong Wu Yen. I eagerly waited for it to air but the first few episodes were average at best. But my love for Ming Dao made me stick with it, and from episode 5 things got better. Right now ZWY is the best TW drama to watch : it has interesting characters, deals with prejudice in society against people who are different, addresses the issue of plastic surgery in the entertainment industry and of course the love story which develops over time between out 2 leads- played by the always wonderful Ming Dao and Cheryl Yang .

Hi everyone. I need help for school (I know lame, but I'm desparate at this point). It's a marketing class, and we have to pick a country and then a product we think we would want to try to export (from the US) to that country and than write a marketing plan, etc. We picked South Korea because we wanted to do something like Walgreens, but the Professor said to make it easy and just pick a simple product. We're.... at a stump. So, any suggestions.
P.S. Sorry jb. Like I said, desperate. And at desperate time, desperate kids do desperate things.

Dryers.
Export energy-efficient and inexpensive dryers to Korea and you'll never have to work again. I have it on good authority from all of my Korean-American and currently-dwelling-in-Korea friends, that Korean dwellings are awash (hah!) in laundry machines, but not so much dryers, and there is much hanging of laundry on racks and clotheslines and things.
Write up a plan to export and mainstream dryers. Or a washer/dryer combo. Or maybe a 2-in-1 machine? Do we have those in the US? I don't even know. :-P

It's interesting you would say dryers. Of course I can't speak for other families, but my MIL hates the dryer! She insists on taking out every single piece of clothing and air drying them, before ironing them. Yes underwear included.
But hey it's a class...so go for it! One of my friends did something as ridiculous as tomato chips. It's the plan that counts!

Yeah, I've been made to understand that the vast majority of people are cool with air-drying their stuff because that's just how things are. But in marketing, you need to conjure up a need where there was none before, then offer the masses the product to fill said need (thank you Don Draper).
Ergo, write up a plan to convince Koreans that their lives are inefficient, time-wasting expanses without Western-made dryers, then get an A. :D
Or you could just export Jason Mraz. They love Jason Mraz. "I'm Yours" is all over the place. Or it was. It was the background music in every variety show, and every coffee shop scene in every drama for, like, four months.

How about a dishwasher? I always see people washing dishes by hand in all the dramas. They have so many side dishes, it seems that they would have a lot of dishes each meal. If you could design a dishwasher that cleaned very well and had a quick drying cycle (normal dishwashers take a long time to dry), and energy efficient, so you could use it 3 times a day.
I currently have a LG (Korean brand) dishwasher. I'm not too happy with it. It cost $1,000 (make yours cheaper). It does not heat up the water before it cleans the dishes (this would be a good function. You find it in BOSH dishwashers) Have it not recirculate the dirty water, so you have no food particles stuck on you food at the end of the cycle.
Your niche should be the younger, hipper generation. They don't want to waste their time on household chores. They have money to spend. Plus, not everyone lives in a joint family anymore. Less people to help with the household chores.
Hope this helps.

Although this might be an embarrassing product to present in front of a class, my recommended product is Ex Lax, or metamucil ;)
Of all the K dramas/ movies I have watched, only a small handful of them didn't feature a painfully constipated character, heroically suffering in the toilet. So, even if only 10% of what we watch in a drama is true then there are a lot of suffering people in Korea.
But since I have very little outside knowledge of of day to day life in Korea, take my prophetic pronouncements about laxatives with a grain of salt or a glass of metamucil!
I am sorry if I offended anyone, I was being my usual irreverent self. :)

Happy Friday Dramabeans friends and family!!!!!!!
LOL yesterday my hubby comes home from work and sees me checking my gmail. He say do that later, put our drama on first. So, I tell him we are not watching anything today. (he'd been bugging me earlier on the phone, so I needed to bug him back:D) So, he starts to surf the t.v. , BONES is on. He reluctantly starts to watch. He's not a happy camper right now. He keeps looking back to see if I'm done. Of course I take my sweet time:P Twenty minutes later I turn to him and say "Do you still want to watch"? I'm thinking he is into Bones and won't watch now. (this is a test).
In a flash he turns the t.v. off. He opens up his laptop and puts SMILE, YOU on. :D
LOL, this is the same guy who told me a year ago, "What is this GARBAGE you are watching all the time"?
HA!!! Now, he can't survive without his one hour daily dose. :D

Happy Friday everyone...
At new place now, everyone here has been very nice to me, really, treads me like their own family. Far from my friends&sister whom usually I can share my craziness about kdrama & others related with kpop, just make me little bit lonely, but still can visit this site feel like a cure (can I ask all beaners&OTers to be my family too??^^) If only they can read this I want to say thank you very much...
My sister ask me to join her to see kpop idol group concert in Singapore next January (can you guess who is this kpop idol group?^^). It will cost a lot, I guess - I have to work harder & save more, at the time I'm on the top of my laid back life. Why oh why there's no kpop or kpop singer/group/band want to held their concert at Indonesia? we, kpop/jpop fans at Indonesia, are not considerable enough? For consideration, Indonesia has population more than 200 million, if 0,01 % or 0,001% of its population is Kpop/jpop fan, is it still a lot? ha, ha, ha just kidding. My dream of watching FT Island concert live in Indonesia is still far away from coming true.
Anyway still on September, but i can say that 2010 is the best year of kdrama, the reason why i'm on the top of my laid back life, ha, ha, ha
SKKS rock!!Love this series with all my heart ^_^. Happy Friday, Saturday, Sunday & the rest days of the week....

LOL 2010 was a strange year for Kpop in Singapore. Before this year, it was like Singapore never existed in the world of marketing for Kpop. Then 2010 hit, and it's like, we've had kpop artistes visit almost every month. Sometimes a couple in a month. It's driving me insane (and also sadly broke). So don't give up hope yet. It could happen for Indonesia too.
Good luck saving up money for SS3 in Jan! If you're going, that is. I anticipate ticket prices to be crazy. Depending on the venue they select...I may or may not turn up...
Happy friday! (Saturday now, for me)

I shall spend all of Friday evening reading in bed until I fall asleep at the crazy hour of, like, 7:30pm. Ah, it shall be glorious.
@Brookeeve How is your son, Unni? Hopefully our little one had a good week this week and didn't let any dingbat friends get him down? Precious child. I could just ask this via e-mail, but I know there were several people who responded on the last Open Thread who'd probably like to hear how he's doing.

He's doing much better. He was really appreciative of everyone's trying to set him up with their daughters and nieces so that gave him a huge ego boost. We sat and talked for 3 hours one day after school, and I found out that his best friend (the blond haired, blue eyed football player) has been getting a lot of girls writing him notes and that's why my baby has been especially sensitive about his looks lately. I pointed out that he could beat said friend in HALO, and so he immediately cheered up at that thought. (I don't completely understand this rationale, but if it works for 13 year olds I'm going with it for now.) Also, when we went to the festival on Saturday I brought him by the Asian-American arts tent, and most of the girls there were staring at him. It worked like a magic self-esteem elixir. :)
Once again, I really want to thank everyone for the help and advice they gave last Friday. Because of my age, none of my friends' kids are teenagers so I don't have a lot of people around me that I can ask questions, and raising one in this weird void is really hard. You guys were a big help!

Teenage years are tough. I have a 16 year old daughter. Thank God all her friends are Asian ( Korean, Japanese, Chinese) and come from very conservative backgrounds. So far I've been lucky no one is interested in dating or going to any of the school dances. She has friends who are boys and girls. Everyone hangs out in a group together at school.
She doesn't follow American t.v. or music at all. I feel that isolates he a little from the main crowd. (We live in California) She's a really innocent kid for a 16 year old. She also dresses very low key and is not interested in makeup yet. I would like to keep it like that a bit longer. I'm more worried about when she goes to college in 2 years.
So far all her crushes have been Korean actors or singers. I'm O.K. with that.
My 11 year old son still thinks girls are so annoying. So, I'm safe so far. Let's see what happens when he goes to middle school next year and sees what is going on there.

My family is multi-cultural. Through adoption, multiple marriages, the military, and other random factors, no one (except me, I'm full blooded North American) in my family is full blood (name of continent). My beautiful step-child (who is Scots-Irish/Cherokee and German/Korean) was having problems last week with identity and peer relationships.
I wish that I could get him together with the kids from the people on this page. Everyone here was really great last week by offering advice and threatening the kids who were mean to him and etc. I love this page!

Wow. That's quite the mix you have there. Your family will be my role model. I think I'm definitely going to have to look you up once I have kids. I'm not sure if this too nosy, and hopefully not offensive, but how do you guys deal with all the different languages? I know being in America makes things a lot easier but I think I'd like my kids to be able to speak to their grandparents. But with ..well in my case, it would be four languages..I don't even want to think about it.

We mainly speak English, but at times we do fall back on a polyglot whenever something needs to be expressed that English doesn't cover (like terms when discussing religion and philosophy). Plus, most of the people in our family are scientists, so Latin is always safe. :) And never underestimate the power of body language, facial expressions, and a willingness to look stupid in order to facilitate understanding.

lol. I definitely got the "willingness to look stupid down.." I look pretty clueless when I interact with mr hunter bear's family. Hah! and I have the perfect excuse to watch kdramas...i'm only trying to learn the language :P. But sometimes I just wish they could understand me when I'm totally frustrated and hopping around trying to point at things. I'd feel bad for my kids if they had to do that.

My colleagues asked me out to watch "Devil" tonight...and I looked at them and said, "Can't. Gumiho is playing tonight. Gotta run, guys!" and sped off like a bullet train.
This is HOW ADDICTED I AM TO THIS DRAMA. Ep 13 was gorgeous, great, fantastic...but from what I've seen from comments about Ep 14, as much as I tried to avoid them...sigh...the Hong sisters usually start to waver around this time for most of their dramas. I'm hoping Episodes 15 and 16 pick up. If they do, I'm picking up the DVDs for keeps.
Keep trying to convince my friend to watch SKKS, and she's all like, "But I'm so tired of gender-bending dramas and pure romantic comedy." whereupon I launched into a tirade of how labelling SKKS a mere "gender-bending" drama, complete with romance and comedy didn't do the series justice. It's got political intrigue! Well-written and developed side-characters! (Even Hyo-eun is actually quite interesting, especially if you take into consideration the age in which the drama is set)
Most importantly, I think the drama's got heart. The eye-candies don't hurt, of course (Hello Moony-Yummy-Smarty-and Yoon Hee coalition! ...have we decided what nickname we're giving all 4 of them yet?) but it's the heart of it all that's really appealing to me.
...ARGH now that I've gone and rushed through all my weekday dramas, WHAT AM I GOING TO WATCH OVER THE WEEKEND?!

I love skks too. It's not your typical drama. I liked Tamna Island too, and was bummed when the ratings were so low. More people are starting to watch SKKS now.
@ Dramabeans I decided to watch SKKS because of all the good things you had to say about it before it aired. When I start any drama, I first check and see if dramabeans thinks it is worthy or not. :D

Okay, I have to confess, I quit Tamna Island after the first episode during the summer, because it was SO SO SO bad.
But, on being encouraged a LOT in the last OT, I restarted it this week and will be finishing it tonight, and so far, it's been mostly worth the watch and there's a few heart-tuggers in there for me. I'll let everyone know at the end, but I have to say, I'm not regretting giving it another try!

Public holiday, so enjoying a nice long weekend. :-) Also really enjoying Playful Kiss but also so frustrated by it. Everytime Oh Ha Ni realises she has to move on, something happens that makes her redouble her stalking and really that's what it is!!!
Was also watching a bit of MGIAG online while my mum was watching a Bollywood movie. While swivelling our heads back and forth between John Abraham & Shin Min-ah we realised they'll make a very cute couple ... LOL

John Abraham ... O mai gah! :P
It's almost ridiculous how much he has blown up. A few weeks ago I was having lunch at an Indian buffet , and the restaurant had Bollywood music videos playing on their giant plasma screen. John Abraham showed up in seven (seven!) consecutive music videos. And in five of them, he was either shirtless, wearing an unbuttoned vest with nothing underneath, or wearing a wifebeater (singlet) while dancing in the rain -- in the rain that was falling inside the nightclub! LOL. In the last video, he was on the beach wearing Baywatch-style red swimming trunks, and spent almost the entire song underneath a rinse-off shower while the camera repeatedly panned up and town his rippled torso, tracking the water as it cascaded down his hard body....
I swear to God, I almost died from choking on my chicken tikka masala.

Ooh, lists of my favorites ....
Bride & Prejudice (cheesy, I know, but it has a lot of heart and laughs and I still watch it several times a year)
Lagaan (one of my first Hindi films and honestly, just catches me up in it everytime, it's about cricket and oppression and romance and so much more, period piece)
Salaam Bombay (very difficult to watch, but life-changing for me, delves into the life of street children)
Monsoon Wedding (so touching, a lot of heart, follows three relationships to some good and some uncomfortable endings, but you finish the film warm-hearted)
More later!

September 25, 2010 at 10:04 AM
By the way, my favorite Bollywood movies are
1) Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi-- A very sweet, sometimes silly, and always heartwarming movie about a husband and wife falling in love.
2) Kal Ho Naa Ho-- AWESOME. I can't reveal too much because it gives things away....
3) Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge-- The longest running film (in theaters) in the world. Its still showing in a theater in India, and it opened in 1993. It looks like it was made in the 70s, but I guess Bollywood had issues with quality control back in the day. A boy and a girl meet on a train on a trip through Europe... Adventure ensues. And that's only the first half!
4) Jab We Met. Yes, the special effects leave something to be desired, but seriously... Its just too cute.
5) Om Shanti Om. I can't think of a Bollywood star who ISN'T in this movie.
6) Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham-- Behold the wonder of Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan in a single dance number.

Hi everyone!
I'm kind of dropping out of watching dramas so that I can focus on school. But I can't wait until vacation starts so that I can marathon all of them! <3
BTW! If any of you are readers, I just want to recommend reading "Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcolm Gladwell. It's basically a book that studies what goes into making someone so successful like Bill Gates and analyzes not only their talent/skill but things like circumstances and chance. Pretty interesting stuff and you should check it out!

Hi Casie! same here... i've been restraining myself because my real life, the pinnacle of my uni life is really demanding right now... just have been quietly whetting my appetite downloading SKKS and Gumiho and fully restraining self not to stream Alone In Love and Evasive Inquiry Agency online (Just you wait, treasures! But I can't help hovering at dramabeans and reading the recaps even though I hate spoilers in general T_T. and proobably sneakily watch one or two episodes of SKKS. my thesis really needs attention though so i sometimes feel a bit of self-loathing (a true addict's state of mind).
Good reading material that I recommend: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As Lahlita mentioned before. So. Good. The whole trilogy (the Millenium series) is even better.

Thank goodness it is friday! This week felt so incredibly long and stressful. And though fitting in my tv shows (a lot of season premieres were this week. ) and SKKS (the only drama I am actively watching now because it's so awesome-sauce) in meant a little bit less sleep, it got me through the week without going nuts. Now I can go through 12 hours without thinking about homework. Maybe even catch up on MGIAG.
I am very impressed by SKKS and Park Min Young. People talk about the guys, but my fave out of the 4 is PMY/ Yoon-hee/Yoon-shik. The competition scene was amazing- not only in terms of what her character accomplished but also PMY's acting. I'm not surprised that the top gisaeng fell in love with her, but I am surprised that Ha In-soo's little sister didn't throw over Sun-joon for the awesomeness that is Kim Yoon-shik! Even I have a crush on Yoon-shik! She/he is more man than anyone as SKK!

Cont. from OT 153:
Oh, but I am watching Gloria. :D
Well, only up to episode 4, but just when I was needing the motivation I watched random clips from last saturday's episode and Suh Ji-suk had a Dr Wang moment. And I almost squeed myself to death.
When I was watching Rockstar, I was like whyyyy... WHY didn't rambutan tell me earlier... how sexy this guy is, how utterly adorable Bae Doo-na is and how gut-bustingly funny So Ji-sub is? Heheheh....
The Country Princess mention was more one of jest. Sure it has KDW, BDN and the SSW in it, but the premise is almost laughable. BDN being all Mrs Mary Sue the Martyr in it. No thank you.
This one's more tempting; Invincible Parachute Agent.

Though you'll need to both register and follow their prompts to download a winamp player (on which to stream their videos). Doesn't take long to get setup, and the show's subbed too if you need them.
Happy watching. Let me know if you have any problems. Though you shouldn't it's pretty foolproof.
Gloria's getting better. I'm up to episode 7. On the Chun-hee and Yeon-soo front atleast. Poor Kang-seok (SJS) is still... sigh, so flat.

I'm a bit sad and relieved that MGiaG is ending next week. That show reeled me in something fierce and I honestly didn't expect to like it this much. It's a relief though that I won't be losing sleep every thursday and friday waiting for the viikii subs to come out.
I'm dreading November, when Mary stayed out all night comes out, since I'm a huge fan of MGY. I've watched 3 of her movies and 2 of her dramas and I'm pretty sure she's my slice of heaven on earth. :p

Hi, like most people, I'm addicted to SKKS. I really hope that by episode 10, SJ will find out YH's real gender. Can't wait any longer! BTW, if you have been following the translated novels (esp. the chinese one), you will notice that moonie's character isn't as cute as the drama version. In fact, YH couldn't wait to chase him out of the room so that she could enjoy couple time with SJ alone! But I really don't mind the T.V version! He's so cute!!!

I totally know what everyone is talking about when they say they're going to fail out of school. I moved to DC in late August for grad school (from New Mexico, by the way, so it was really quite a move) and I watched Personal Taste on Hulu out of boredom before school started. I had never seen a K-drama before but I love Bollywood, so I figured I'd have a good time getting into another unfamiliar culture. It is now the third week of school, and I absolutely cannot stop. I have to limit the amount of time I watch per day. I work in a library, and often freak out patrons by squeeling during a particularly cute scene. Worse yet, as soon as I watch an episode (usually of Playful Kiss or MGIAG) I want to see what was said about it here... Which in turn makes me want to watch another drama! Crunchyroll and viiki were invented to ruin my life.

Oh goodness, I just made my husband run back here 'cause I was laughing at your last comment too loudly! I completely know what you're saying, I spend waaaaay too much time on this site and soompi and viikii than what could possibly be healthy for anyone.

Ha! Apologize to your husband for me :) Good to know I'm not alone! I feel slightly less ashamed that I am probably going to save this site on my phone so I can check it while I ride the metro...

You know you have it bad when it 1. disrupts family life
and/or 2. overtakes commute time, down time, waiting room time, sleep time, eating time, studying time, I've been thinking about an in-bathroom TV. Whadyathink?

LOL, sounds like my life. :P
Dang, I got a sink full of dishes to do right now and I don't want to. I'm on semi stike. Hubbie is bringing home dinner. OH HAPPY DAY :D I'll get one of my kids to load the dishwasher, while I sit back and relax and watch MGIAG. (Wonderful master plan)
And my Kdrama addiction continues.

nice one! here are some things / symptoms i experienced: 1. overtakes studying and sleeping time (tried commuting time but it didnt do justice. my ipod's too small :s) 2. severe cravings, more so when real life's hard 3. intervention by worried family members 4. excessive, uncharacteristic fangirl mode 5. lack of self control and sometimes, a bit of self loathing 6. heightened intelligence and sense in k-addict related resourcefulness eg in blog and forum lurking, pic hunting, media playing, but steep decline in pretty much everything else.

You don't need a bathroom TV, You need what I have...I bathroom laptop. 17in titanium. It's old but is set to region 3 and can stream like nobodies business. Setup a tubby with lots of bubbles then watch whatever movie you want on a dolly/safety cart a comfortable distance from the tub.

You are not alone! I am full time student and I also work in the library's computer lab without any supervision....... So you can pretty much guess what I do with my time.
Dramabeans has become part of the ritual of drama watching for me. A drama just doesn't feel complete, if I don't run back here and read the recap.
About freaking out patrons....remember the pig chase scene in YAB? I was laughing soo hard and trying to contain it, since the lab is supposed to be a quiet zone, it looked like I was having a seizure.... there were many concerned comment about my health that day ;)

I have totally been there. It sounds like you and I have some uncomfortable things in common! ;) My boss caught me watching K-dramas on the Circ desk computer, which is not strictly FORBIDDEN, but it does make me less inclined to check out books... Don't get me wrong, I was helping patrons and being polite about it, but she saw me visibly cringe every time someone sat their books down in front of me. She would not stop laughing at me all day. I tried to explain that one does NOT want to pause a K-drama during a particularly squeel worthy moment, but she didn't seem to understand my plight. :(

My boss is my enabler. I work in the top floor in a completely isolated computer lab, that she never ever visits. I am supposedly there to help patrons if they need, but I am very seldom asked to do anything by the patrons. So, basically it's just me my headphones and sweet swet K dramas. I dread the time when I might have to get another job.......

I must confess... When my laptop stopped working properly I volunteered for extra work shifts so I could keep up with my K-drama. Yeah, I need help.
Your job sounds awesome! I must admit, during slow shifts I don't get interrupted often so I suppose I can't complain. Still, hours and hours of uninterrupted k-drama that one if being PAID to watch? Your life rocks ;)

My Watch List:
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
Playful Kiss
I Am Legend
SungKyunKwan Scandal
.......and that's only the Korean Shows.
MGIG is really funny. But I don't feel attached to it. I love it...but I wont cry whenever it ends...maybe. I just don't get Hye-in. If I found out that there was a Gumiho in town, than I would probably be freaked out, not continue to follow her and try to force her to break up with your boy toy.
Playful Kiss is awesome. I don't understand why their ratings are so low. I can kinda understand if it was like 9% or 10% because of MGIG. BUT 3%?!?! That's way too low. I think KHJ's acting has improved greatly. Something I hated in the Taiwan version was that Zhi Shu didn't show any signs of actually liking Xiang Qian until like the last few episodes. In this version, I like how Baek Seung Jo smiles around Oh Ha Ni. But I don't like the little teddy bears at the end. It added to the charm in Goong, but here it just doesn't feel right. Playful Kiss FIGHTING! *computer kiss*
SungKyunKwan Scandal is kind of boring. But it picked up in Episode 7. I haven't got the chance to watch Episode 8 so I don't know if it's still picking up if it fell. I'm also hoping that Jae-In won't keep it a secret that he knows about Yoon-shik being a girl. We all know what happens(read:You're Beautiful). I personally like Jae-In better than SungJoon but apparently, that's just me. Jae-In is cool and manly when he fights, but cute whenever he hiccups around girls. But I don't know why but I just don't like Yunha. I love the actor but the character is kind of annoying. He's always trying to help her but then tries to get her secret exposed. In real life, he would be classified as a backstabber. But drama-wise, I do admit, I swoon a little when he comes on the screen. SungJoon...SungJoon can just go with Hyo-Eun for all I care. But I know that's not how the story's gonna go....:(
Who's looking forward for Mary Stayed Out All Night? When I heard Jang Geun Suk was gonna star in it, I was like, eh, I'll take a look. :| Then Moon Geun Young, who is one of my favorite actresses, got cast. :) So I spared some time in my schedule. Then...KIM. JAE. WOOK. :0 :O :D AHHHHH!!!!! DROP EVERYTHING AND WAIT FOR IT TO BROADCAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But is JGS going to be a hippie singer or a rocker singer? I'm hoping rocker. One of the things I'm looking forward to is the TWO love contracts. But from what I'm hearing, KJW is going to play the perfect guy. And we all know what happens to perfect guy second leads(read:every single drama out there). What would make this the best drama of the year is if the plot went like this: JGS meets MGY and makes a love contract with her(for whatever reason). And then KJW also makes a love contract with MGY(because his mom is starting to think that he's gay or something because he never dates anyone). That would be awesome. Hell, if the don't make it like this, then I'm going to make my own drama series and broadcast it here in the USA. No subtitles!
So this was me rambling. I'm like one of many people here who are trying to hide their drama addiction from everyone. *I mean, what addiction? I am not addicted-GIVE BACK MY COMPUTER! DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH IT! DO YOU REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO ME?!?!* .....anyways...... Have A Great Weekend, DramaAddicts Everywhere!

ditto on your excitement for Mary Stayed Out All Night.
and on hiding my addiction. (Well, it's not an addiction per se... it's more of a...lifestyle?)
I didn't like the Taiwanese version of PK either because (a) Joe Cheng is no where near "perfect guy" quality
(b)the girl's ridiculous actions made ME feel embarrassed for her and
(c) Joe Cheng didn't even like her until the very end and it was like "wait, when did you care about her??"
but would you recommend the Korean version then? coz if you do I may watch it...
