The Beauty Inside Ep 3: What?! Again?! Sleep with me?! Everything was going so well until this! Faintz. Kdrama writers really need to be a little less tacky with their lines!
Am in an Afraid to Be Disappointed By the Show and Feel Like I Wasted My Time kind of mood. This makes me extremely reluctant to start on a drama unless reviews are largely unanimous.
I dont start AYHT, so it’s not exactly about unanimous reviews.
I think after spending 500+ hours watching drama, we understand our taste and preference in drama. I stay away from acclaimed dramas like Misaeng, Mother, Reply series. They’re just not my cup of tea. I did watch Signal and Forest of Secret because crime/mystery/time travel/time slip are my favorite genres/tropes.
500 hours is a huge chunk of our lives! It’s scary, haha. I haven’t kept count but I do think I should be pretty close. I do know my preference for some types of shows… I haven’t watched DoTS or Goblin and I have no inclination to start… I don’t like sci-fi or robot shows. No melo for me either. But otherwise I am generally open to the rest of the genres! So that still makes it hard to sift out what I might like and what I might not. I guess sometimes we just have to take the plunge or go with our gut feel. I am just being a fusspot!
I get where you’re coming from. But to judge a show for yourself, you’ll have to spend the time actually watching them and putting yourself up for potential disappointment. Other people’s opinions help you to hedge your bets. Or so I feel…
I’m not watching anything in particular right now! And therein lies the problem. I don’t know which new show to take a chance on! I devoured Prison Playbook, Misty, My Ahjussi and then Live all in a row. Each of them just felt so… satisfactory. Every time I finished one show I had another show on my slate. But not anymore! I’m waiting for Life on Mars to end its run so I can start on that. But it’s taking so long! I tried watching Secretary Kim and 30 but 17 but nothing about them spurred me to continue watching the next episodes. So I’m just entertaining myself with variety shows until Life on Mars is over, which is really soon! At last!
Live Ep 9: Am enjoying Live whose tone seems to be in the vein of My Ahjussi. Ordinary stories revolving around a patrol division versus stories stemming from the lives of residents in a neighbourhood
That’s why I didn’t watch either of them live. Waited for all the eps to be out and devoured one drama after the other. Yes, I enjoyed Live very much! Thanks!
Why Secretary Kim Ep 3: This show is starting to feel like a Taiwanese idol drama. The cutesyness of the amusement park date was almost too much for me to stomach. Gasp. Am I getting too old for this?
Taken at face value – yes, I see your point. But the saccharine is subverted by the fact that the entire sequence is presented as part of YJ’s masterplan to win her over. It is ‘blockbuster’ romcom for a reason. To me, the over-the-top-ness felt right given the overall mahnwa vibe of the show, which works perfectly with my current mood. But if you are looking for something realistic then this is probably not the show for you.
I agree with @charlieblue17 The whole point of it being over the top is to show YJ quite literally thinks winning over a girl with romance needs to be a blockbuster cutesy, fluff kdrama. So I enjoyed the irony!
Yes.. you saw through me. I’m usually more inclined towards plot lines that feel real to me. I confess I am neither a fan of manhwas nor have I watched that many dramas adapted from them. So the whole vibe takes a little getting used to. I guess it’s about going in knowing what to expect from the outset… which I didn’t. I was enjoying the first two eps and kept hoping that the plot while outlandish could continue to have a touch of realism that will move audiences like myself. I just couldn’t relate to the amusement park scene which triggered my comment. I guess I have to remind myself that hey this is the manhwa world! Things like that happen and characters react like that. I’ll probably continue to watch the show for abit more to decide if it’s for me. Thanks for your two cents!
Totally get it. I personally favor unrealistic story lines but where the emotional vibes feel realistic – if that even makes sense (see e.g. I am not a robot). I get plenty of realism day to day so what I am looking in dramas is a bit of fun escapism. What I do care about is that I can relate emotionally to the characters. I need the emotions to feel real and I think this show does a good job with that so far. What I find great about WWWSK is that it is showing all the expected traditional romcom bits but then cleverly subverting them with humor. For instance when it starts the blockbuster date but then shows MS hating the rides while YJ being his uberdazzling self. Or on the river with the fancy overview camera followed by MS’s ‘It sure is cold’. A healthy dose of funny to cut through all the cheese is a winning recipe in my books.
Watched A Taxi Driver on a whim. The knowledge that the movie was based on real life made it poignant. But it was also enjoyable in no small part due to Song Kang Ho’s understated performance.
Why Secretary Kim episode 2: PSJ is nailing his role as the narcissistic boss. He is more funny than grating. Apart from that, I’m amused by how Kim Mi So can look so perfect cleaning her house.
Dipping my feet into My Golden Life to find out what the hype is about. The first five episodes are alright but I find myself constantly checking how much more time is left to the end of the ep.
Regretting starting Wise Prison Life too early because the English subtitles are taking Too Damn Long. Don’t even see a shadow of the subs for Eps 11 and 12 in the horizon.
For the first time in the year, I am not live watching any drama. Nothing appeals to me and everything seems lacklustre to the choices we have been spoilt with earlier in the year. #rantover
Currently binge watching Season 3 of 2 Days 1 Night where the current crop of members came together with Kim Joo Hyuk. Finally seeing the attraction of this show that I never grasped from recent eps.
I still enjoy the show but Season 3 was at it’s best when Kim Joo Hyuk and PD Yoo Ho Jin were there IMO. The members had such great chemistry, and part of the fun was watching them start out so awkward and gradually grow close.
Sometimes, you just get hit by a feeling that a certain drama’s gonna be right down your alley. I get that from Go Back Spouses.. which fills me with trepidation that I’m gonna be disappointed. Help!
