Bid farewell to this gem of a show that has charmed me for the past month and a half :’)

Billed as a fusion rom-com sageuk, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung turned out to be so much more. It was a thoughtful exploration of the role of history and what it means to write and re-write it. It was also a kind of inverted coming-of-age tale: an ensemble of brave young characters grapple with a political reality that threatens to crush their ideals and beliefs. But instead of caving to disllusionment, they create a space for change to happen.

The show is more optimistic and light-hearted than sageuks usually are, but it gave each character, big and small, a moral weight and compelling backstory that told of the writer’s respect and affection for each of her fictional creations.
