The Midnight Romance in Hagwon ep 3: I usually go to education-related dramas because of the heartwarming, inspiring relationships between the teachers and the students. I assume this show will eventually get there, but it’s taking forever. When am I gonna see these lecturers actually lecture to students…? I’m beginning to think that I should readjust my expectations for this show.
I find the topic of hagwons and the tension between them and traditional schooling to be interesting, but the drama honestly doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything with that right now. I know the first episodes of a drama are for laying the ground work, but I am really hoping this show goes somewhere soon. I like the general vibes and the actors but the characters haven’t captured me enough yet for me to enjoy this snail pacing or care about the inter and intra-hagwon rivalries/politics.
Also, I’ll never stop being astounded at how lecturers in Korea can apparently reach celebrity status. The marketing is craaaazy.
It’s still sloooooow but I’m starting to enjoy it a bit more each episode now that they are actually, well, teaching.
It’s a bit of a nothingburger of a show, though. From some of the comments I saw I thought it would have sharper social commentary, but it isn’t there for me yet.
