My Top 20 K-pop Songs (20-11):
I actually checked out more songs this year in kpop than I have in the past couple of years. I even discovered a new group (or two). This list is still very limited in its scope, but hope y’all find some treasures here!

20. Sunrise (Ateez) – Solitary combatted by solidarity – a sweet sentiment reflected in the lyrics and choreography
19. Somebody New (Super Junior) – Standard love song by a non-standard group – a highlight of their voices and their camaraderie
18. Obsession (Exo) – From anti-fan to 70% less opposed in considering to be obsessed with them – a catchy song and very clever concept
17. Want (Taemin) – For my own sanity, I better not want you as much as you want me to want you – perfection of a sensual concept and demonstration of his versatility
16. Butterfly (Loona) – Definitely no caterpillars – a convention defying group with strong dancers and vocals
15. Blueming (IU) – Modern flirting in a non-modern world – a sweet voice depicting a relationship growing through texting
14. Chronosaurus (Stray Kids) – Title combines 2 words; song combines 2 styles – a nice combination of singers and rappers that highlights the strengths of each other
13. Truth (Taemin) – The truth that doesn’t hurt – a love song of sincerity with vocals that prove his growth
12. You’re My (Jung Daehyun) – Underrated vocals ready to wrench your heart away – emotion-filled vocals for an emotion-packed song
11. Wave (Ateez) – Takes you along with the tides – a sunny song sure to brighten any day

Some new artist names and some new song title names for me. Looks like some B sides? One thing I miss about buying actual albums is discovering B sides.

Going to try some of these out tomorrow.

I have the same struggle. I don’t usually enjoy discovering full albums through YouTube and much prefer the old school CD played in my car. All of these btracks have either official mvs that were released after the main single (like Somebody New) or they were the btrack performed live before their promoted single (like Sunrise). The only one you’ll be stuck with an unofficial video for is Taemin’s Truth because I do have that album and learned about it that way.
Hope you enjoy some new tracks/artists! Let me know your thoughts!

I had to brutally cut Ateez from my list, but they really have had one heck of a year. Standouts for me were Wave, Aurora, and Wonderland.

My Top 20 K-pop Songs (10-1):
10. Above the Time (IU) – Clever sequel I never knew I needed – a beautiful continuation that builds an even more complex, beautiful world
9. 365 (Loona) – I need another year with these vocals – a beautiful ballad highlighting their vocal strength
8. Stay Beautiful (Jimin Park) – If you say so with that voice – a wonderful message with a well-controlled voice
7. Wonderland (Ateez) – Where can I buy a ticket? – a power anthem brought to life by 8 very charismatic men
6. Monologue (Taemin) – Grab your tissues – a dual-meaning song about a lover lost or possibly a loved one lost that reaches to your heart by an emotional performance
5. Orange Drive (Bang Yongguk) – Road trip always moving onward – a meaningful song from someone always digging deeper into the meaning of living
4. Ain’t That Pretty (Ailee) – Rock what you got – a self-love anthem presented by someone who gets it
3. I Wanna Be (Key) – Don’t we all? – an addictively awesome bop with a fun video and dance
2. Hala Hala (Ateez) – Let me grab my megaphone – a perfect representation of how to combine strong vocals, strong rap, and strong performance
1. Love Poem (IU) – A song needed to be heard – a timely song that speaks to those needing relief and to those giving it by a woman who has shown strength and poise in the face of tragedies

IU’s entire album is my favorite this year.

    4
    1

Me too. IU is just remarkable and I’m glad that 2019 has been a very good year for her. Blueming was a particular favorite and accompanied me a lot during my commute to and from the office. All other songs in her album have been gems, mainly because of IU’s writing.

      2
      1

I definitely want to buy her album! I’m sure it would be on repeat. She’s really proven herself as a strong songwriter over the years. I can’t wait to see what more she’ll have for us.

I will remember Jonghyun as an artist, as a beautiful human being, as an inspiration. I will remember the moments of happiness and the moments of sadness because he never shied away from laughing or crying. I hope we can express ourselves even better. Never be afraid to open up to people. There is a higher risk but also a higher reward.

I swear, back in the OG days before the agencies were messed up and everyone was friends with everyone, I can guarantee you that the dressing rooms of DB5K, SUJU, and SHINee were the loudest ROFL

Haha oh for sure. Suju is still a loud mess.
I love how some worker just closes the door on them because they’re being too loud. Shinee doesn’t even care.

I’m finishing up My Strange Hero finally. I’m liking it better this second try and understanding the reconciliation more this time. It doesn’t hurt that YSH has one of the most charming smiles.

YSH played his character so well that I still don’t think it’s fair how he forgave everyone so quickly. He definitely got the short end the stick.

I sympathized with the FL a little bit more this time so that helped with accepting his grace. I think the build up of the whole REVENGE IS MIIIINE didn’t help with the whole “oh nevermind. She said sorry.” They almost did too good of a job with getting us to side with him and his revenge plan. If that was toned down a little, maybe the quick reconciliations would have felt more real overall. I do like their partnership though now so that lessens the sting a little too.

I mean he wasnt necessarily wronged by her the most. He was just so hurt that she didnt believe him, not knowing that she did believe him but just felt too guilty to face him and wanted to move on, not knowing how much it mattered to him. Once that was cleared out, he had no reason to resent her. she only told them what she heard, which was the truth.

The revenge wasn’t just focused on her, though I guess she hurt him the most emotionally. His real beef is with Seho. And his mom. And the school. And the world. And hes ready to stir things up I LOVE HIM.

Question in the comments for those who have seen Signal and Memories of the Alhambra or for those who are wondering how dare those two kdramas be in the same sentence and don\’t mind spoilers.

3
17

Why did people like the ending to Signal and not to MoA? It is literally the same type of ending. The important male character is thought to be dead and in the final minute, he is revealed to be alive and in mortal danger; both FLs are racing towards him in the final seconds of the show; and both shows end before anyone knows if the ML will be alright. My general guess is that people liked Signal more overall so could stomach the ending more. But, thoughts?

    1
    2

I haven’t seen MoA so I can’t speak for it, but with Signal there is the fact that the story itself kind of built to the ending – all we knew was that he had disappeared, no confirmation of death. Also, it was a show where the questions of whether changing the past could affect the future, so an ending where a presumed dead character is alive is less out of nowhere. It sticks with the questions that the show has been exploring for 16 episodes even if it is a surprise.

      7
      1

True. And, the fact that he is alive at all is closure to at least one of the important questions – his disappearance.

I think MoA did too but since you haven’t seen it, I’ll save my PowerPoint presentation lol.

        2
        1

I think part of it was that in Signal the ending felt earned by the strength of the show overall. It worked because even if you didn’t see it coming it was built into the DNA of the story itself. I have no desire to watch MoA (I made it through half an episode) but from what I gather, the writing in that show didn’t build up to its twists and therefore it didn’t “earn” its ending. The thing about good writing is that even where you don’t know what’s going to happen next, when something shocking happens it is “earned” when in retrospect it remains in keeping with the way the story and characters built to it. Think about The Sixth Sense – the first time we all saw the movie it was shocking, but when you rewatch it it makes so much sense because of subtle hints in the writing and direction.

          2
          2

I think that’s what most people’s argument would be. I saw the clues MoA gave to lead to that ending and so I found it earned, but I think many people were distracted by what they didn’t like to see them.

            1
            0

IMHO the only people who thought MoA didn’t build up well to its ending were people who were waiting for everything to end like a superhero movie and everything go back to normal at the finale. I expected extreme disaster.

            0
            0

Double standards. Besically people will forgive shows they love nearly everything.

For myself I thought Signal got away with lots and lots of plotholes, and MoA basically tried to show extreme gaming can ruin your life. End of story.

      5
      2

And once people decide they hate the potted plant, they start looking for reasons to hate everything else in the show.

The FL in Signal was not a potted plant 🙂

        4
        2

I have never gotten as angry at potted plants as some of the beanies.

          3
          1

Yeah there have been times where that term has been overused. My taste in female leads has definitely changed over the years to want a stronger woman as lead, but I think strength isn’t necessarily doing everything herself or never crying. It also isn’t being a brat and getting away with anything because she’s a “strong, independent” woman. It is hard to find the balance.

            3
            0

It was weird cause I didn’t see her as much of a potted plant as other people did. I mean she did cry a lot but she did what she could in the situation she was in. I mean she really didn’t have any means to go find her brother, she didn’t have the time to “waste” on a game, and she did her job in physically and emotionally supporting the family she had left. She joined in when she could but I’m not really sure what more she could have done. She was really there to create an emotional backbone to the whole thing.

            0

Replying to your latest comment here. Again, thank you! I agree.

Actually we shouldn’t be looking for balance, I guess. Different characters in dramas resonate with different people. And that should be ok.

            1
            0

I agree. I think Snarklyjellyfish has a good point about the ending of Signal above, but I also think the ending of MoA was not forgiven as easily just because they didn’t buy into the world in the same way. The writer could still be blamed for that, but I don’t think there was that much of a disparity as people think between the two shows.

        1
        1

I think people were expecting a completely different show, that is why they couldn’t buy into it. We can blame the writer, the teasers and promo people, or the viewers’ preconceprions, but it won’t change anything unfortunately.

          2
          2

Yeah the ones who were expecting an action-packed show didn’t get their tough FL and the ones who were expecting a romance didn’t get their fairy-tale ending.

            3
            0

I think MoA disappointed a lot of people because the game turned out to be more important to him.

She was more a support to him than an actual partner in a relationship. I never really expected them to end up together.

Because it was SO EXACTLY like him to give her his own eye and confidently announce that he would find her where-ever she went. I loved the cheeky note the show ended on. It was exactly like Monkey King. And one knew that he would do it. As always.

@midnight ah true. I can see how it would stay in character. I don’t mind bittersweet endings but open-ended endings drive me a little crazy. I might still check it out though. There did seem to be some golden moments that would make it worth-while.

Melting Me Softly is loosely on my list. I do love the leads and the clips I’ve seen don’t really seem all that bad if you go in expecting some farce.

Yeah usually there’s someone out there who loves it even if it seems most don’t. It is nice to see those more positive posts.

I love MoA with all its flaws. I think the only thing I actually hate is the vague ending. Aside from that, it’s a drama I enjoyed watching and dissecting.

One show I remember many beanies, but not all of them, dislike is Wok of Love. I LOVE IT.
Two Cops is another one. I have rewatched both of themmany many times.
Room No.9 is another one that I have watched recently, starting it very cautiously but I love this one too.

    3

Oh, I’m glad to hear you liked Wok of Love! I’ve been wanting to watch it for Junho but it did seem that not many people really enjoyed it. I’ll give it go!

I love it. Both JunHo and Jung Ryeo Won are perfect. And I don’t care what other people say, this is one of the best roles I have seen Jang Hyuk in.

        1

Yep, I was recently thinking of rewatching Wok of Love for Jang Hyuk. Sure, it gets a bit unfocused towards the end but I loved it. And the cat.

          0

I love Junho. He was sooo good in Chief Kim and JBL. I stopped reading recaps of WoL but can’t remember why. I do remember something about a steamy kitchen kiss lol. I think that would be a fun one for a light comedy. I should add it to my list.
The last two just never really interested me. I do love Jo Jung-suk though.

      1
      2

See, I was bored to tears with JBL and I had lots of issues with it that frustrated me. The only thing I liked about it was the relationship between JunHo and the second female lead near the end of the story.

        0
        1

I’ve heard that from others but I absolutely adore JBL and really want to rewatch it. The FSL was really awesome and I did enjoy that friendship too. The MSL got on my nerves a little but I’ve seen worse lol

Room No.9 never intrested me either until just recently when I had finished a rewatch of Lookout and was desperate for more KYK but disliked Secret Life of my Secretary. I went in just for him not knowing anything about the story, and it gripped me immediately.

Ooh didn’t realize he was in that too. I do like both female leads too but idk. I’ll have to be in just the right mood for that one.

Wok of Love is love. It’s disjointed at times and most of the times it felt like the writer couldn’t decide whether she wanted to go all out on the absurdity scale or not. But the oddly frank conversations are to die for (so refreshingly weird and honest). And the characters are a delight.

I enjoyed Suspicious Partner. It lost it’s way like midway but was still nice enough.
Strong Woman got a lot of love here I thought. I barely made it through recaps…
Hotel Del Luna is definitely on my list. That one sounded good.
Vagabond is loosely on my list. I don’t mind an action show here and there.
Recaps were fun to read for The Heirs but never would watch it. Maybe if it was back when I was watching BoF and those classics lol
I always mean to go back and read Dr Jin recaps. Heard they were pretty hilarious.

      2

I would probably rate Strong Woman as my most disliked drama ever. Mostly because I somehow managed to watch all of the trainwreck and didn’t drop it like most other bad dramas. I give major side-eyes to anyone who say they liked it.

        1
        1

I’m a chronic finisher so I have a nice list of disliked ones I’ve completed. There were some core issues I had with Strong Woman (from reading recaps) that I think it was the leads chemistry that must have hard carried that show. I don’t begrudge people liking it but I will not be convinced to check it out myself.

          0
          1

I have stopped reading recaps to check the show a long time ago. I have found out that I enjoy shows better when I go in blind without the recappers’ first impressions, as people usually have a certain expectation from promo materials and/or production crew credits, which can ruin the first few episodes for them very easily and it shows clearly in their recap. I tend to avoid promo materials and I prefer to go in blind. That has been the best strategy for me to enjoy the most number of shows.

            1
            0

strong woman couldve been an interesting show and the leads were cute as buttons. but also i could write a book on how it somehow sent the exact opposite message of what it should have sent with the premise and also how it literally handled every single plotline wrong.

but also park boyoung is magic. i didnt even mind its terribleness as long as i could fast forward to her scenes. im not sure why.

        1
        0

@midnight I don’t rely on recaps as much as I used to. I don’t mind some bias in there cause I do come for their genuine opinion. Plus, I have my own biases too, but it can get deceiving when it’s all love or all criticism.
I also love spoilers (as long as I seek them out and they don’t ninja attack me) so I’m all for pre-reading recaps and watching promos lol. It does backfire sometimes.

Hate may be too strong of a word but people seemed to not like the plot or L all that much. I enjoyed it a lot too. Shin Hye-sun is awesome and I thought L held his own with how much goofier his role was suppose to be.

Did you not like the end or did you not like any of it?

    0
    1

Mainly the whole thing. I loved the guy trio. I wished we had gotten more of their story and reconciliation. Jinyoung and Ninja (I’m so bad with character names lol) were so interesting but they barely got any screen time it felt like (and yes that ending was so pointless for him T_T). I wanted to like Ra-on but she was just unable to handle anything on her own and then she spent the second half sitting there crying. I love that actress though so I’m glad I saw her in other things first before this. The show had charm and I could see how people really were drawn to it but I just couldn’t buy into it. 😔

      3
      2

Ninja was awesome! I love his hair 😍
Ra On had spunk at the beginning but that kind of disappeared halfway through.
I didn’t like that the three guy’s friendship was broken up at the end 😭

        1
        1

His hair was really good. It looked sp bouncy. Yeah, if they focused on them reconciling that would have been so much better and meaningful than anything else in the drama.
I felt like Ra-on had spunk but was a bit too ditzy at the beginning lol
Oh! I forgot I did love CSB’s character. I think she got short-changed too by the end but she was really cool.

          2
          0

The fact that Jinyoung was completely sidelined was one of my biggest gripes with the show (LITERALLY NO ONE SEEMED TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE DIED???).

In general, I think MDBC had a lot of potential, and I can think of a bunch of better ways some of the side characters could’ve been used that would’ve made the show a whole lot more watchable.

It felt like the writers themselves were a little confused about whether they wanted to focus on the romance, or focus on the politics, and they just ended up not doing either one all that well, which is such a pity, because I feel like the show could’ve been really good.

        3
        1

Yeeeees! I’m a bana so maybe a little bias but Jinyoung did so good at selling his role in everything (and was even a better politician than the prince at times). His death scene (as ridiculous and out of character as it was) had so much omph and then everyone was like here is my single tear and the end. I also hated that it was used to justify the evil grandfather/minister to end his life. I wanted to see him get actual justice.

Yeah I can see that being the problem. They tried to bite off more than they could chew but were able to ride on the charisma of the actors.

          1
          0

I didn’t even make it through two episodes.

    1
    1

I’m too stubborn for my own good so I hardly ever drop, but also I assumed it would get better since I heard such great reviews here. By the time I realized it wouldn’t, I was too deep in that it would have been a waste not to finish it….

      1
      0

Finally someone I can relate with. I loved our two leads individually but I didn’t feel any chemistry between them. This is one major reason I didn’t like the show. Also like comments have mentioned our heroin kinda lost her spunkiness as the show moved on. And I think the politics weren’t gripping enough for me..

    1
    1

Yeah I shouldn’t have watched CwP in between this one cause KYJ had amazing chemistry with YKS. Granted she was reeeeally young in MDBC but still…the elements were there for me to want them to be together but I just didn’t feel it.

I felt like the prince floundered with the politics a bit too much and never seemed to get the upperhand until the end when others helped him. Jinyoung had a grasp on the politics and his part was interesting, but it wasn’t focused on enough. I think they had too many players and tried to focus on all of them without giving any of them service.

      1

“the elements were there for me to want them to be together but I just didn’t feel it” yess EXactly!!
Also this was one of my first few dramas and at that time I didn’t really know the actor/actresses well, just used to watch the drama without knowing the cast but now that you mentioned, I searched her up and she is twenty RIGHT NOW, which means she was SEVENTEEN then?? 😱😱
I did not know anyone could get a lead role at this age and that to in a romance drama!!

I’m still horrible at keeping actors straight lol.
Yeah she’s so young! She comes from being a child actress and I want to say MDBC was her first “adult” role. She was a high schooler in Angry Mom but it wasn’t a romance (awesome kdrama btw).

Haha, I am getting better 😅
Just recently discovered she was a child actress when i saw clips of her , Yeo Jin Goo and Kim So Hyun in ‘Moon Embraving The Sun’. They’ve all come a long way!
Haven’t watched ‘Angry Mom’, searched it up, the premise sounds interesting I think I’ll add it into my foot long ‘To Watch’ list😅

I never did get around to watching Moon Embracing the Sun.

I know all about a mile long list haha mine grows faster than I watch T_T

I haven’t watched moon embracing the sun as well.
About the mile long list, doesn’t everybody’s??😂

How is he such a beautiful human being? Every time I think I couldn’t love him more he does something wonderful and meaningful. Even if you don’t know Key, watch. Trust me. It’s worth your time.

There is something about him that makes me think he would be such a great friend to have.

He would be! He is definitely a social bee. It seems every week someone is visiting him in the military lol

He’s amazing. I hope he takes on more acting when he’s back. He’s the reason I’ll rewatch Lookout.❣️

We just finished that! Our biggest complaint was we needed more Key and Seulgi. lol
I hope he does more acting too. He has such presence on stage/camera.

K-con next week!! Yaaay! I\’m crossing fingers and toes that Dramabeans will make another appearance there. Also, I\’ll love to get together with L.A/L.A-adjacent beanies. We have a kakao group so I can add you there or we can find another way to PM each other if anyone is interested in meeting up next week!

Who are you excited to see?

    1

Mamamoo, Nu’est, Ateez, Stray Kids, Esna, Kevin Woo, ReacttotheK, and more! Lol

      1
      2

I haven’t payed much attention to stray kids but that one boy’s voice is so deep. I hadn’t thought about it before but all those famous deep voices at one time would of been coming out of the mouth’s of babes, lol.
When I first fell down the kpop rabbit hole definitely came across some reaction videos by ReacttotheK, Dezzy March, and that producer guy.

That would be Felix (@adieunoire @ultramafic see I pay attention)
haha and that is true. My favorite deep voice in kpop is Bang Yongguk (formerly BAP). I never saw him as a kid though lol
Yeah Dezzy and PD I’m excited for too. PD was there last year but I didn’t catch him on any panels. Hopefully this year I will

I’ll spend my time being jealous of everyone who gets to see Mamamoo.

I’m pretty sure it’s been mid-August or around there every year. The one in New York is like early July usually I think.

      Thank you!

Of course we have to have this part of a Shinee birthday party for @jaelegant We absolutely adore this performance. Their joy is contagious!

That was awesome! They didn’t even let the rain stop them!

I really want to go to one of their concerts someday. They really know how to put on a show. I wonder how long we’ll have to wait for all of them to complete their military service. Have you ever been to one of their concerts?

        2
        1

I’ve been to a fanmeet and a concert. They are absolutely amazing live!

I don’t know when they will all be done exactly. Taemin technically could wait for his hyungs to get back, make a comeback, then go into the military but no one knows what the plan is.

This does not stop us from making wide assumptions, however. Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

@jaelegant Happy Birthday!!!! I can’t believe I’m ruining my fan wall with boba, but it’s completely worth it to celebrate you! I hope you enjoy your day drinking some boba tea and dancing to Shinee!

    Omg!! I had no idea!!

Happy birthday, Jules!! Drink ALL of the boba!! Don’t listen to any of Crys’s boba hatred!!

This dance is so underrated. It’s such a fun and crazy concept. I love the styling, too. It’s fairly normal (for them) but with some added quirk.

I can’t believe they have been around 11 years! Shinee always knows how to rock the stage no matter what. At around 9:45 or so, it starts doooownpouring and they become even more alive.

Seeing the Game of Thrones meltdowns reminds me why I watch kdramas. At least I only waste 24 hours to have a bad finale instead if 7 years.

@bammsie Happy Birthday! 💜💙 Here’s some Shinee to remind you to not be too serious on your special day! *throws boba and baguettes your way*

@greenfields So glad you found BAP! This is a favorite song/video. They are such goofballs. Another favorite is Wake Me Up so definitely check that one out!

So cute! I don’t understand why they’re doing what they’re doing at the start of the video but it was SO CUTE. 🤣 This cheerful song is super nice as well – their music is (as you already know but I’m only just discovering) so good. Literally 8/10 songs are working for me. Including “Wake Me Up”. I already love it haha.

I’m yet to get to them on variety and live performances though – a very new to BAP person. Recs like this are much appreciated!

There must be something about Junho that makes beanies commandeer a post. Too bad I’m not live watching this show.

I love that moment where you recognize this person just has to be your bias. You see that something special and just can’t look away. This was my #biasmakingmoment. I love the joy he finds in dancing.

So cute! I love it when people smile while they are dancing. It’s one of the reasons why JB is my bias. It’s nice to see that they are enjoying performing as much as we enjoy watching them perform 💕

    2
    1

Oh definitely. It’s disheartening, especially in that industrial system, to see someone just go through the motions, but when you run into the people who aren’t doing it just to be idols but because they enjoy it then that’s what makes you want to keep following them and hope for their best.
