Beanie level: Errand boy

Whew.

2021 has been the longest year ever, and January’s not even over yet. Hope for better things to come now.

When T was first elected, I laughed. I said he’s such a bumbling idiot, he can’t do much harm. That’s the wrongest I’ve ever been.

Besides the incredible damage to the US as a country, there have been so many families torn apart because of the T/Q cult. One of those families is mine. My sister, who was an intelligent, reasonable woman, is deep into this. Hopefully today will break the fantasy for her, and all the others who have been drawn in, and they can start to heal.

PSA – watch the Social Dilemma on Netflix, everyone, and keep your loved ones away from Facebook and YouTube rabbit holes.

It’s been on my watchlist for a year precisely cos i’m afraid it’ll make me paranoid to be online.. ignorance is bliss or just plain stupid of me? 😬

      1
      1

If you’re already aware that the social media posts you’re seeing could be propaganda pushed by an algorithm, you don’t really have to watch. Most everything I look at online is cat pictures and kdrama stuff, so it’s fine for me. If you’re seeing political and medical posts, it’s better to be careful to check a lot of different sources.

Silly me, i did watch the social dilemma! It’s the Great Hack that i’ve been putting off. They’re also pushing a lot of targeted ads to us, but since i’m not much of a shopper it’s useless to target me 😆

I think what was missing for me in 2020 was a big, bad, makjangtastic drama like Last Empress, or Vagabond, or Memories of the Alhambra. There were a lot of dramas that were good that I enjoyed, but that’s not the same…

7
5

Did you watch The Spies who Loved me? I won’t call it makjang but it hasd the crack factor, most shows these days lack.

    2
    1

Didn’t watch either because totally not my genre, but you might consider Penthouse and Lie of Lies

    1
    1

I tried Penthouse and it was too crazy even for me, haha. I do want to watch Lie of Lies, I forgot about that!

      1
      0

Agree – I want another Last Empress! I didn’t make it past ep 1 of Vagabond and was positively livid half way through Alhambra, so…maybe…not those two lol

The end of Start-Up wasn’t bad. Overall, I enjoyed the drama. I was kinda sad not to share the journey on the recaps, but such is life.

Now I want a spinoff with Han Jipyeong and Yeo Jingoo and Halmoni running the orphan program with some sassy teens in the mix. The 3 Sans can come back as well, they were a hoot.

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! It’s been a rough year, but some hopeful signs for up ahead.

Today I’m thankful for DDSSLLS spoilers. Not gonna watch today’s episode. I’ll watch it in a few years, maybe.

?????
Not quite following whatever logic (or lack of it) is in the plot of DDSSLLS but I’ll just sit here and enjoy the cute, I guess.

    My thoughts exactly LOL.

This show is like a puppy. It’s so cute I can’t get mad at it even when it makes a complete mess and does something nonsensical.

Talking Cupboard has translated Kim Seonho’s Esquire interview. She’s also done some of his earlier interviews: https://thetalkingcupboard.com/2020/11/21/kim-seon-ho-esquire-december-2020-interview/

P.S. Why would Esquire not capture the dimples??

    3

Wow, the talking cupboard was my go-to blog when I started watching sageuks because it’s got EVERYTHING, it’s such a great and informative blog. And now I find out it also has got a Interviews and Photoshoots feature – and Woo Dohwan! I’m squealing with happiness (and now excuse me, while I move into The talking cupboard)

What the heck… there are 293 comments on the Start-Up recap, and rumors of a shipping war. Not touching that with a 10-foot pole.

9
14

Me too. I went there when the comments were around 100 and decided not to go near it after I saw the signs of a shipping war

    4
    1

Is it really there? My comments were in the first 50 and all the responses I got were fine (you and I have exchanged comments nicely), but wow… I guess things really escalated… It’s just a show, isn’t it?

      4
      2

Yeah, things sure did escalate. I mean the moment I saw people calling Do San manipulative, I was like ” I have read enough comments”

        4
        0

Yeah some of the comments are really taking things to a whole new level. This show is fun but definitely not worth getting so emotional over!

        1

It’s a web of lies by both Ji Pyeong and Do san. I left the show at ep 3 because it was unsettling, Dal mi is being duped. Lying is sth many women detest the most in men. I want her to become succesful and screw both the guys, she deserves someone honest and worthy and it isn’t necessary to find your partner in work.

    3
    2

I dropped it with no intention of picking it back – but the main issue being Dal-mi’s character so completely flat that I find nothing worth my rooting her.

      2
      3

I’m with you on the flat writing of the female characters, not just Dalmi. Halmoni is the only one who seems to have some meat to her, but I think it’s also Kim Hae-sook bringing her A-game to the show. It’s a shame, because the humour in this drama is really top notch; but only the male actors are in the funny bits.

        3
        0

Maybe her character is flat, but…

        0
        0

This, and also, I can’t believe so many people in the comment section actually think its a sign of being a great CEO that she committed blackmail aka felony to get her investment. Dal Mi has not shown actual leadership skills worth the praise yet, the sparks here and there are two weak to light up the whole sky. And I personally believe the writer doesn’t know how start up or tech industry landscape works. She is putting bandages on top of the holes and gap in her own lack of understanding by pumping the triangle, nonsensical revenge and shitty CEO plots. I mean people are more stressed about who is the girl in the swing in a fucking logo…tell me why it matters? Its a logo, they aren’t going to make Dal Mi or In Jae face of sandbox because of it. I’ve said if for weeks now, peel back the fluff……the writing on technical aspect is the weakest I’ve seen in a while. Its a standard rom-com.

        1
        0

Haha that would be a good resolution too! I agree that there’s too much lying happening. Not just the two guys. Also Halmoni. She’s also perpetuating the lies. I feel bad for Dalmi.

      2
      2

As much as I love Halmoni, she really is perpetuating the lies.

        3
        0

I feel really bad for DalMi. Her poor heart, when she learns.
I also feel bad for InJae. Halmoni hasn’t tried to reach her.

        3
        1

Totally! Every grandchild is equally precious, surely. That story of what happened in the intervening years is like a blackbox. I wonder if they’ll do a flashback episode sometime soon to fill in the gaps. There is certainly room for that.

Injae is – in theory – a very complex character, but she hasn’t been given her due in the story – yet. Maybe it’s going to happen soon. I’d happily watch a spinoff with Injae as the lead, and get into her head, during and after her parents’ divorce, her mum’s remarriage, her stepdad’s betrayal, her entrepreneurial spirit (even if she seems to be riding on her sister’s identity) – there’s so much going on with her. But it’s discussed only at the surface level in this show. :/

I would 100% take an external hard drive over flowers any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I haven\’t watched the news since around 2012, but I thought I\’d give it a go as things are getting interesting here. I only lasted around 10 minutes. I feel so sorry for the reporters, they\’ve been on air for like 3 straight days now and have nothing left to say and are digging around in their brains furiously for content. This must be like what a drama writer feels like writing ep. 14 and they\’ve run out of plot and just heard they\’re getting a 2-episode extension.

    Kidnapping/noble idiocy/timeskip to the rescue, writer-nim!

This is why I still don’t watch the news and only read the NYT or 538 lol

I’m so impressed by the depth of knowledge that enables reporters in the field to explain topics in great detail. I often think, wow these people are so much smarter than I am, and they’re so much younger. I wonder where you go to school to get that smart, really.

    1
    1

I think you do have to be able to retain a lot of information, but the more impressive skill to me is the ability to spit it out in an articulate way on the spot. I could never in a million years do that. I know some people who can, it’s fascinating to watch.

My favorite version of Schumann/Lizst’s Widmung. It was Joonyoung’s encore piece in the last episode of DYLB, and Lala’s tribute to her father in DDSSLLS. Made me cry both times.

Been on a TwoSet tear lately, and just saw the DYLB kid playing Zigeunerweisen.

She’s. . . pretty good.

Holy crap, the first ep of Startup was SO GOOD. But they’ve totally set us up to root for Kim Seon-ho as the first lead, I don’t know if my heart can take it.

I laughed at this scene, as I’ve magic-markered many a shoe in my day. I can afford new shoes, but my feet only like certain shoes so I keep them as long as I can!

i was hoping for no love triangles.. but i guess we are in for one..

sis will love seon ho, he will love suzy, suzy will love nam son, and NJM would love suzy

Kim Sun ho’s character and Suzy’s got such a classic k-drama OTP set up. You’d think he was first male lead but alas … I’m going to need an alternate version where Kim Sun Ho gets the girl.

DDSSLLS Ep. 2 – Go Ara\’s crying is starting to give me Hwarang flashbacks. If she starts walking slowly too, I\’m outta here. Otherwise, still liking it!

So much crying already. Granted, it’s (mostly) for comedic effect, but I’m already tired of it!

Loved the first episode of DDSSLLS! Go Ara is good in this, and she\’s a pretty good piano faker to boot. She had me bawling in the piano crying scene. The piece is an arrangement by Liszt of one of my favorite Schumann songs, Widmung, setting a Rückert poem. The translation:

You my soul, you my heart,
You my rapture, O you my pain,
You my world in which I live,
My heaven you, to which I aspire,
O you my grave, into which
My grief forever I’ve consigned!
You are repose, you are peace,
You are bestowed on me from heaven.
Your love for me gives me my worth,
Your eyes transfigure me in mine,
You raise me lovingly above myself,
My guardian angel, my better self!
😭
