I find that I have sympathy for what Hye-jun’s dad and brother are saying, even though I though I don’t much like dad or brother. It seems like Hye-jun is right to be upset about their motives. It doesn’t seem like they genuinely care about Hye-jun; even if they do, their way of expressing it is problematic. (Also, brother generally comes off as an entitled jerk.)
Having said that, I’m sort of ambivalent about Hye-jun “being his own person” and being “true to himself” by pursuing his dreams. Dreams can change and people can change. Even if they don’t, life consists of compromises; most people do not become the types of people they want to become (for internal and external reasons). That doesn’t mean most people live worse or insincere lives. I think meeting responsibilities while being a mostly decent and contented is the most that we can demand of ourselves and of others.
It might be too cynical. I don’t know. It’s my perspective on things in the light of personal experience and the experiences of people I know really well.
More than hating – I thought the performances of the supporting cast was very weak. Both the boys’ mothers, the salon sunbae, the rich sister and her bf – they all seemed like they needed more work in the acting department – at least to me.
I may have transitioned into anime and I may or may not have been finding kdrama cliches in them. But seriously, watch Clannad After Story. It was a stark reminder for me of the emotional pain that is Hi Bye Mama. Except somehow… worse.
Guys, I just watched a total GEM of a movie (directed, produced, etc by Koreans with an eng-speaking cast) and I’m just dying of fluff and happiness by the end. Totally recommended.
[Not kdrama related] Anyone know any good (animated or not) kids show that\’s still mature/good for adults? I got obsessed with Avatar so now every adult show is unappealing.
Was about to recommend avatar till I saw that. That’s it for me. Almost every other animated thing I watch (anime/non-anime) is rated 16 for violence and blood or profanity😁
Lots of anime fits this category, I think. Psycho Pass is great, for example. I love A SIlent Voice, Millennium Actress, Grave of the Fireflies, and Spirited Away(which are movies rather than a shows, but still). I adore Baccano! and recommend it all the time to people who have no particular interest in anime. I like Your Lie in April, although some people find it maudlin; I would throw Violet Evergarden into this category as well. Shirobako is great and I still like Hyouka. There are many others.
Something so powerful about Sang Tae initiating the hug. I feel so bad about Kang Tae constantly blaming himself. It’s not that I want him to blame Sang Tae (I would never blame the one with autism).
Sang-tae finally gets to be the older brother. He gets to comfort Gang-tae and give him forgiveness. These are things that Gang-tae always does for him so this reversal means so much for Sang-tae.
I for one really appreciate seeing KT as a character. Being a caretaker is hard and it’s unfair for society to expect them to always be *ok* in caring for their mentally challenged family member. I understand his character in that it can be tiring and difficult. He always has to suppress his thoughts and feelings and has to be careful around ST. Hearing KT say how he finds his life miserable and how he thinks being with MY, who for him represents his respite and happiness, is a dream that he does not deserve is quite sad and depressing. I like that Joori also told him that it is also fine to consider your own happiness and to be *selfish* when looking after people.
I think people forget this about caretakers. They are just HUMAN and the work that they are doing is hard, draining, and oftentimes thankless. Its ok–its NECESSARY for them to take breaks if they are to keep doing what they are doing and doing it well without anger and resentment.
When ST started to cry my eyes were brimming with tears and once KT fell to the floor sobbing, waterfalls were falling down my face, this scene is so hard to watch 🙁
I dont cry easily but OH BOI THIS SCENE. I’m so tempted to rewatch and appreciate the mad skills but at the same time…do i want to put myself thru this again??
I think I’ll be pretty disturbed if they don’t get it. However Forest 2 is also going to air this year so it’s gonna be a tough competition between Kim Soo Hyun and Cho Seung Woo. I’ll root for KSH obviously 🙂
Ugh. If we could just throw this movie to the abyss of non-existence. Can’t wait for the coming live-action series to come out. Please hurry up and replace all traces of this abominable film!
Do I have the patience to wait 2 months to see Park Bo-gum again? I think so. I waited through all of Boyfriend’s production, I can certainly do it again.
Yes. 30BUT17 was terrific. That picture brought to mind the final scene which I thought was quite gutsy of the director.
You recall, our couple (above) are leaning out the famous skylight waving at the camera which proceeds to go straight up to reveal the crew out in front of the house also waiving goodbye to the camera. I loved it.
(I am a sucker for those cast and crew pics at the end of a drama.)
I just love this drama!!! I never rewatch anything, but I just had to see this one again. I might rewatch for a third time soon since I’ve been feeling kind of down. Glad to see other people love it as well!!
I loved the lighting in this scene—like, a lot. It was soooooooooooo intimate. You can see that they moved wear it was coming from around, but it doesn’t matter, the effect was really good
