Today is the US holiday of Thanksgiving, a day we set aside to remember what we are grateful for and share what we have.
I am so grateful for Dramabeans and Beanies, every day! ❤️
Thank you all!
Happy Thanksgiving I hope you get to spend quality time with your loved ones and get some rest.
I agree the beanie community is great and one we can all be thankful to be a part of.
Thanks! Personally Iβm getting over knee surgery so itβs a day of exercises and resting. Iβm grateful that my surgery appears to have gone well and my friends have taken excellent care of me.
These Black women are obsessed with Korean TV dramas. Hereβs why.
Black K-drama evangelists began launching blogs, Facebook groups, Instagram clubs, podcasts and TikTok accounts dedicated to Korean dramas years before ‘Squid Games’ capturer the world’s attention.
By Soo Youn
Thanks for sharing this. Noonas noonchi did two episodes on this very subject last year on her YouTube channel interviewing Black female fans she met on Clubhouse in K-dramatics club and I discovered K dramas have been popular in some African countries for years.
Hi Beanies, I need some help, I have a βdateβ with a US Veteran of the Korean War and canβt think of any dramas set in that period. Can you name some dramas/movies that would fit?
Yes, I figure it was so bleak that Koreans really donβt want to revisit it in a drama. There were a few early episodes in Fashion 70s during the war but thatβs all I can recall seeing.
I just googled it and loads came up for films so may be worth doing the same and then seeing whatβs available. I initially thought Pachinko but thatβs set from 1915 onwards and they havenβt shown much for the time frame you are referring to!
These are both about Korean soldiers in that war and were filmed/aired around 2010, when the 60th anniversary meant they were in season. I watched one of them back then – I think it was “Legend” but recollections are a bit fuzzy now. Anyway, the one I saw was one of my first kdramas and seemed pretty good to me at the time.
For TV shows, I don’t know if you’ve seen M.A.S.H.? That’d be the classic all Korean War vets would know too since it was an American show. It’s one of my favourites in terms of its tragi-comic look at the war.
I also had forgotten Dongmakol, sheeeesh. MASH was interesting as it purported to be about Korea but was really about the Viet Nam War which was current at the time. Very much from the US perspective.
“Love is a Many Splendored Thing” (1955). It only uses the Korean War as a backdrop to a romance set in old Hong Kong, but this actually may be better for him. Here is a link to its trailer. https://youtu.be/BfTDeB7_m9Q
Oooohhhh, a Beanie date! I hope you have fun! If it were me, and I know itβs not, I probably wouldnβt mention anything about war on the date, Korean-drama related or not, unless specifically asked. 😜 Itβs not called the βforgotten warβ for nothing.
Itβs ok, the meeting is specifically to talk about his war stories. I thought Iβd be prepared with suggestions if he wants to watch shows/films from the Korean perspective. Iβll be playing that by ear, of course.
I sure wish Iβd finished reading βThe Coldest Warβ by David Halberstam, itβs supposed to be the definitive book on the subject.
its really a family get together and Iβm invited so that we can talk about his war experiences (because Iβm interested and he likes talking about it).
Oh, if he likes talking about his experiences then that paints a much different picture for us to offer recommendations. In that case, he may like “The Bridges of Toko-ri” (1954). It’s one of my favorite KW films although it does has more romance than action. Check out the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZ1f0OA752w
Also, if you think he’d like something more hard-core then you cannot do better than Gregory Peck starring in “Pork Chop Hill”. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtzvRs-u2MY
Well.
I, for one, want to thank the Hong Sisters for SO MANY fakeouts that went beyond any fakeouts before this show. Pret-ty danged well done *nods in acknowledgment *
Well, it may be sorcerer, otherwise itβs something hidden in the address 🤷♀️
At any rate, itβs a funny review and I thought, boy if this critic thinks this, he/she should see Alchemy of Souls 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Thanks for sharing. Is it me or did it sound like the company is growing because they get free high quality subtitles which means the international audience share is huge. These same people are so grateful to have access to a range of shows on a legitimate site that they share links to the content across social media. This means itβs win win for Viki as the savings mean they can buy more dramas.
I have just got an ad for Wong fu productions BTS for the Viki channel. I am glad for Wong fu getting the recognition but shame they had to be associated with a channel that openly exploits their viewers generosity. The video showed how they get subtitles and is clearly going to suck people into wanting to join the volunteers. Itβs a real catch 22 for us viewers we want to access the dramas and have the quality subtitles but want the channel to stop taking liberties and just accept the free days of free subbers should be ended now the channel is so successful and they can afford to pay them. They would still get the free advertising from fans spreading the word and would gain more market share as they have much higher quality subtitles and therefore could cover even more dramas and languages.
The writer takes a stance that is a bit harsh. But knowing several people who immigrated from Korea to the US, all of them say that living there is super competitive and difficult. They love visiting, but would never move back.
βThis guy was talking about something very important (how the meta verse is taking over in every area of our lives) and all I could concentrate on was the abstract whales on the wallpaper behind him
My husband and I went to dinner at a local restaurant and they had a gift shop which had the cutest birthday card with a whale on it and thought of EAU as well. 😝
Thanks for sharing, the power of a dad on a mission and an emphasis on education.🥰 I love the way they say she made the money herself turning the failing company around.
