I believe it is because he used to be a deity who got expelled from heaven that he became a demon. I don’t know much of the folklore but that’s how I understood it.
yeah I was thinking the same..Im wondering what kind of sin he did to end up as a demon. Which brings another question to mind, is he stronger then his other demon fellows seeing how he was able to get rid of the bookseller in one blow?
I’m really hoping they go into his back story! I think he is stronger than all the other demons, which is why no one will challenge him and just lets him do whatever he wants.

Also: Is Son oh gong considered a demon and if yes why is he referred to as the great sage? What about Ma Wang and Frost, Piggy and Summer fairy??
