Jangwoo: You may think that my life is frustrating. You could think that it’s not anything special. But you see, I call that mundane life, “happiness”.
Eunshil: What?
JangWoo: Maybe some SNU graduates dream of exploring outer space. But to me… Sure I’m a SNU graduate, but I want to build and live my life doing so-called normal things every day. That’s my dream. Working hard and living an ordinary life makes me happy. I know that about myself.
Eunshil: You should have written that in your letter.
JangWoo: What?
EunShil: Instead of writing about getting beat up, “I know what makes me happy” Had you written that, I might have liked you more.
JangWoo: Do you think… is that cool?
EunShil: Yes. Not many people know what truly makes them happy.
This scene spoke to me more than any other extravagant scene I’ve watched this year. JangWoo explaining his happiness and EunShil recognizing that specialness of JangWoo’s happiness. How many people know what truly makes them happy? And how many people can chase that without being swayed by other people’s opinions of what happiness should look like?
This scene was precious, and we could understand better why our favourite unicorn was that cheerful, happy and willing to help others. He just wanted an ordinary life to make ordinary people happier… if only all of us would fight for that!
“I want to build and live my life doing so-called normal things every day. That’s my dream. Working hard and living an ordinary life makes me happy.” is one of my favourite lines of dialogue.😊 It made me feel…more ok about myself. It also reminded me a bit of the conversation about ambition in My Unfamiliar Family, but that one had a different flavour and went another direction.

My ordinary life is happiness for me.
And yes JangWoo… you’re pretty cool.
