This looks intense and I've liked most of the dramas Ro-woon has done so I'll definitely tune in if it makes it to Hulu. I love the FL, too. Story might be too dark (Chuno wasn't exactly uplifting) but we'll see. At the very least, it looks to be beautifully shot and edited.

The main leads getting together just before the credits roll is a bad habit that seems to be a fad. Let us hope it fades away soon.

Dear A: Why not just register?

Your point about how short the show has been simply underscores my point: Our stories are being truncated to fit into the ten episode format. The result is unneeded loose ends.

I want to add: I think that the ML (deep down) liked how the FL kept calling him out and treating him like a normal person. He's probably never experienced that before!

My wife and I loved VIVA LA VIDA. The actress received a Best Actress award for it at one of the major awards shows in China- and for very good reason.

I actually thought the paper was pretty good because it was basically fair and didn't hide from stating the facts (as known in 2020) including naming the parties involved. I really, really hope that XZ and WYB can put this behind them now, and also do what they can to put a damper on their more rabid fans. It doesn't need to be like this. They have enough resources to take legal action when things get out of control -- and frankly, as today's stories illustrate -- jump on this infringement of their privacy without delay.

This is why you read about performers from solid families whose parents are strongly against their youngsters going into the entertainment field. Everybody get tarnished.

Baffles me why any sane person would expect young men to lead celibate lives sans any experience with relationships -- a surefire way to future disaster. I mean, without any experience dating (or whatever it's called these days) how in the world are they supposed to find a compatible mate?

Goes without saying giving your in-laws credit cards is nuts. Lesson learned.

Very Well said indeed and I could not agree more about the importance of the friendship between BoA and Ji-hyuk. BoA needed to marry, and her lover had disappeared. That is why she chose to marry her friend who also now had a reason to marry- and was a perfect fit for her family business. The marriage of friends is the very best marriage and the two would in time have deeply loved each other. Ji-hyuk's father was way too narrow minded and should have seen the bigger picture- and given Ji-hyuk a hug.

BoA has also embarrassed her parents and no doubt angered her father who was delighted to have Ji-hyuk join his family and eventually run the company. He is already an old man (he was not young when BoA was born). BoA hurt her friend Ji-hyuk but she has also hurt herself and perhaps even her family.

Eun-oh was flat-out wrong to say the things she did- but maybe understandable from the pain of her recent rejection. I am going to cut her some slack on this one.

The source material is a webnovel called "Surviving as Yeonsan-gun's Chef", which is based on the real tyrant Yi Yung/Yeonsan-gun. In the drama they changed the king's name to the fictional Yi Heon/Yeonhui-gun. Maybe to avoid romanticizing a real tyrant?

The FL recognized him as the name given to the kings after their death.

Actually they changed things from the web novel so this drama king is a fictional one.

What a fun start! I loved the FL’s fierceness, quick improvisation, and stubbornness. It took her a while to accept Joseon’s reality, which felt believable considering the circumstances. I was laughing at her reactions and the constant banter with the tyrant—both so stuck in their own assumptions. Yoon-ah is doing a fantastic job and same goes for Lee Chae-min although in some scenes he comes as an angry teen instead of a tyrant.
Gil-geum, who I’m guessing will be the sous-chef in the royal kitchen, is absolutely adorable. She better survive until the end (I’m still sour about her character in Lady Ok).
All the characters felt interesting, and I’m especially curious about the consort’s role. Although she was placed as the King’s lover to harm him, she seems genuinely in love with him—or more correctly, love-obsessed—so I wonder how unhinged she will become. I also love that each episode title is the name of the dish being prepared—can’t wait for more mouthwatering food visuals!

Did not get a single clue what this is about except standard "evil yangbans", but I respect the direction Rowoon seems to be taking his career these days.

I have not been too excited by the Kdrama offerings this year (is it me?) and ended up watching a good number of Cdramas.

However, I'm really enjoying this one so far!

@cliosservant1846

Once again, thank you for sharing the paper! I just read it:
It’s basically all we’ve been discussing on this thread, just in a more wordy/jargon filled manner 😅

Sheesh, something is brewing in C-Ent. this week that would make things feel like there’s a cover-up happening if alll of these celeb headlines were happening to Korean celebs:

1. A random girl claiming to be an ex went online a few days ago to claim C-actor, Xu Kai, as being a “cheater”. He has since reported her to the police

2. Someone exposed a private recording of C-actor, Dylan Wang, supposedly arguwith his girlfriend, whom he’s supposedly sooooo in love with and has been together with for 10+ years, even before he entered showbiz (the girlfriend of 10+ years is true, though). He has since reported the incident to the police.

3. Just this morning, veteran variety show host and actor, Deng Kai, has reportedly cut off the credit cards of his in-laws, and he very openly said it’s “because they’ve been excessively spending, and the credit cards are under my name”

"I also am not clear on why the FL knows him by a name that he doesn't recognize"

It was a legal taboo to pronounce King's personal name in Joseon, and the "historical name" was a posthumous title created only after his death. Still, I was confused. I wasn't sure if she referred to him by his personal name (which he should have known) or by his "historical name" (which he would not know.)

Perhaps, more knowledgeable Beanies can enlighten us?

Rather closely based, I think -- even parts like:
- He was upset about his mother having been deposed and executed.
- Forcing people out of their homes to make room for hunting
- Gathering women for his harem.
"Only the names have been changed to protect the (not-so) innocent"

So expect our king to be deposed and his gf (the Kang Han-na) character) to be executed.
His sons were killed off, but I don't expect the show to follow that particular detail. Oh, and he conveniently dies a couple months after the coup. Koreans didn't go for half-measures when cleaning up after hated tyrants.

It was a fun start and I am looking forward to the next episodes. Though I am not sure about the romance. Let’s see how it goes.

But I was thinking almost the entire time, that Dude was shot in the chest with an arrow and was pretty much fine after a day. Of course he still had a pretty wrap around his nacked chest.

"the ML wouldn't fit in modern society"

Oh but I imagined it it a hundred times! Imagine a Simon Cowell - like tyrant-judge terrorizing the contestants of the food show competitions with his critiques?! He has an excellent pallet but a petty unapologetic nature. He'd be a star of TV cooking shows, lol!
