Korean Dramas & Family Relations

by javabeans

I don't think anyone has mentioned it but I also thought 1% of Anything was a very family centered drama. It wasn't some over the top love hate relationships. It was just a show depicting run of the mill family and the daily occurrences...work life, sitting down to dinner, chatting amongst each other, arguing etc.
Most telling was the eldest brother's statement about family not being made by blood (since that is just what we are made of) but being made how much family members care for each other and the concern they show for one another. This in response to someone questioning how another character could be his sister if they are not related by blood. I thought this was a wonderful statement.

Its the same thing we see in Bad Family isn't it? None of these people were related by blood but they all showed care and concern for one another...even if they denied it :)

Thanks Sarah for the summary. I like your comments and suggestions.

As I was reading the comments, I thought back to those good old Hong Kong dramas I watched many many moons back. I am not sure if people remember these classics made in the 90s by TVB such as File of Justice. They are episodic and occupational (lawyers, judges, criminals) but the character developments and plot run side by side. In the midst of a plot involving a twist between A and B, they successfully mixed character development, lovelinks without sacrificing the plot at all. And their conversations are meaningful because it gives clues to that specific episode's crime/case study and yet everything they say reflect their personalities. They don't randomly say things or randomly do things because this episode has to end in the next three episodes and we need a cliff-hanger!!!

I still think K-dramas are better with emotions, beautiful sceneries, beautiful songs, attention to detail and subtle performances by the actors...

Gotta give it to Air City for trying to be different and wanting change instead of doing what is easy.

Thks! Good summary....thrs one thing that I would love to comment about this series..it seems so real, like I'm watching a real-life relationship going on..and not like the typical fairy tale love story where the hero seems too good and romantic for real and the girl too innocent and naive. I like how mature the Tae Joo's character is and the fact that such guys may exist. However, as for Joon Hyuk, I was kinda taken back at his sudden realization and the decision to leave for the states alone, and also for the fact that he was so distrustful towards the president initially; due to his vague past that led him to such unfilial act and resentment; but then turned the table around and trusted him wholly when he finally revealed what actually happened. Isn't that too good to be true? Can a person's heart change so quickly? And that if it was that easy to trust him, he should have clarified the whole incident with the president wisely in the beginning... anywayz, I like how she ended up in front of his house falling asleep again. Good drama. And hey, I saw one post on Thank You-- that's a GREAT drama by the way, for one. And it's no typical sad drama with ending like autumn in my heart, for two-- no...this is way much deeper. (AIDS- do you think she's gonna die in the end? I shall give you doubts about it now..) In fact it left me such a great impression that I'm really overwhelmed by it. Cuz that drama taught me a lot of things. It's that good.

sarahbeans.. i can't help but go back and read the summaries.. yes.. I'm THAT into them & this series.. ahah.. kdrama is definitely a world of fantasy.. where perfect men like GC actually exists.. he's so different from all those "players".. so it makes those sweet scenes extra special since you know that he does it with sincerity.. and yes.. like everyone else.. i was melting away at his sweetness.. and he has that dorky & adorable child-like quality of an "inexperienced" man who is falling in love for the first time.. sooo cute!!!
falling in love w/ DJ totally changes him.. his life is now exciting and he can experience the process of falling in love * with thorns and all*.. i love his comparison of roses and DJ.. and I totally rotfl when DJ imagined GC kicking her off the bed and hugging his tree instead of her.. ahahah.. at least she only has to worry about him loving his trees and not other women * like that meanie HY's cheating hubby* tsk tsk!! gosh.. i better stop now.. i try not get too drawn into this world of fantasy too much.. hehe.. i think it's a mode of escapism.. hahaha.. i don't want to stay in dreamland 24/7 because i am afraid that i will be too drawn to it and ignore the life that i should live.. ehhe.. gotta get back to reality.. but thank you again sarahbeans.. your recaps brighten up my weekend.. honestly!!! * sending sarahbeans lots of love & hugs*

Hey guys, you don't believe in fantasy and there is a guy like DG? I do 'cause my hubby is like him. Well, not as romantic as GC, but closed in his own way. Like last nite I was tired from watching our hyperactive boy, and he only went to work for like 1/2 day, I asked him to go home early, he said he can't... but 1 hr later he got home to surprise me, and he took care of the son ever since so that I can take a nap... I guess when you found someone that love you like they love themseves, they show sweet sides that you never know... and of course this drama is written by a few authors, and probably with the audience's ideas too, so it collects all the sweetest things women can ever dream in a man. I guarantee that you can see your dearest one has at least one of them, if not, kick him out :-)

Javabeans:
Thanks for your response (#23..)….. My impression was that not just lying about big issues ( i.e. medical conditions) which I can understand, but also everyday conversations from “are you hungry?” to “do you love me?”…Most recent example was the K-drama “Pure in heart”. In it, lying is a daily occurrence in most of the episodes. Does anyone here feel this way too?

I'll try to be more specific next time. Thank you Javabeans.

Flowers For My Life: Episode 10

atalanta, if you see the Episode 3 post, the song is posted there.

lambaste, of course you're entitled to your opinion and it's fine if you don't like the series, but i've seen a helluva lot of korean television and i stand by my opinion that Flowers For My Life IS very different. the tone and the presentation are something i've seen in western television (also something i've seen a helluva lot of) but not so much in kdramas. if you're just jumping in for ten minutes now, at more than halfway through the series, i can see how you might not get that sense, but i don't think it's something you'd get in a random ten-minute sampling anyway.

and as for ratings, it's similar to the States (the nielsen company runs ratings in both), so unless you have a nielsen "people meter" box in your home (and if you're unsure if you have one, you don't), your ratings aren't measured at all. they put boxes in select homes, then extrapolate the data to get an estimate for nationwide numbers. so ratings are inexact.
