Ryu Hyun-kyung debuted as an actress in the 1996 SBS drama Oxtail Soup and has since appeared in a number of movies and series. In 2009, she tried her hand in directing in the short film Kwang-tae’s Basic Story. In 2010, she became part of the historical romantic drama film The Servant, which won her Best Supporting Actress at the 6th University Film Festival of Korea. Her performance in the film also earned her several Best Supporting Actress nominations, including one from 47th Grand Bell Awards. Also in 2010, she starred in the romantic comedy movies Cyrano Agency and Petty Romance. In 2012, she was cast in the gay romantic comedy film Two Weddings and a Funeral.
Ryu Hyun-kyung is in a relationship with actor Park Sung-hoon, whom she met in 2016 on the set of the play Almost, Maine.
