I thought it sounded a lot like the Chinese erhu which is the Chinese two-stringed fiddle but I wasn’t sure cause period drama productions do use violins in their OSTs sometimes right?
Yes, they do, but this sound is definitely not a western stringed instrument. I played violin in a couple orchestras all through college. It is more airy and the notes bend more. Listening to the YouTube vid, you can hear the difference between the strings in the orchestra and the instrument itself.

I’m not really sure what you meant by the notes bending… Don’t have much an ear for differentiating sounds haha.. but to me, Asian stringed instruments like the erhu and the haegeum have plaintive, mournful voices. I think the erhu was also used in Three Inches of Heaven, one of the themesongs for the 2011 adaptation of Scarlet Heart.
