The gif @jillian posted about no wifi for 2 weeks is my reaction to this T………………..T BAE YONG JOON, YOU WERE ALWAYS SO SMART IN YOUR BUSINESS-MAKING DECISIONS, SO WHHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!??!?!?!?!??!?!
Business wise it was smart- he made like $50 million from the sale and bought a whole bunch of SM stock (which probably skyrocketed in value with the merger) and was made Director of some division in SM.
I am not sure if this happens,
I mean SM inhouse production is shall we kiss 1st, jealousy incarnate and my lawyer jo deul ho while the great seducer is mbc production. They have idol related as 38 task force, missing nice and miss korea [the actress is from SM at the time].
The collaboration that done imo is also with Should We Kiss 1st that Kim Sun Ah [Key East] plays in Should We Kiss 1st [SM C&C production].
I don’t think this means we are going to have more idol packaged since jealousy incarnate, jo deul ho, missing nice, should we kiss 1st, miss korea isn’t idol related and from a long time ago, the idol is always on the face for teens-young adult drama.
Hwang jeung um, yoon eun hye, eugene and even seo hyeon jin started as an idol.
Idol will always be the face of teens drama and love story central because they are popular but this SM collaboration actually funded big budget for Park Shin Yang comeback, Ma deong seok and Kim Sun Ah in their in-house production so I don’t feel that it’s going to be more idol related but more of in-house production with key east actor ala swk1st.
SM idol [for me] also work in their own frame like joy with teens drama. I am not even sure if SM has any young idol except joy at this moment.
I think they’ve gone both ways with their in house productions; Jealousy incarnate had Moon Gayoung (although not an idol), Missing 9 had an Exo member, To the Beautiful You had Sulli and Min-ho, and Prime Minister and I had Yoona.
Dramas not produced in house that seem to have a package: The Great Seducer (Joy, MGY, WDH- I’d think it would be naive not to assume this merger was in the works way before it was announced) Hwarang (Go Ara-Min-ho), Descendents of the Sun (Kim Minseok-Onew) and these are the ones I can only think of on top of my head.
Sm still has Exo(I think they’ve all acted at this point), shinee ( which I think all have acted too), Krystal, few members of GG and whatever group they will put out next.
Sm is definitely not the only company to do package deals, they all do but this merger creates almost creates a monopoly for them in which their clout will increase.
I hope you’re right because Teen -young adult dramas are my guilty pleasure and I enjoy when they become breakout vehicles for rookie stars (that have the talent and skills) like Lee Minho and Jung So-min
By no new actor is that no one is on lead actor calibre [their new idol], they usually a supporting actor ala onew or minho that can be relevant but not usually needed since the drama these days always want an idol to rake up the buzz [by giving them smaller role].
So far, their in house pd is solid for lead actor, jo deul ho, miss korea [lee yoon hee is really fitting here], D-Day, The Merchant: Gaekju, Neighbourhood Lawyer, Jo Deul-ho , 38 task force, jealousy incarnate, Missing 9 and Should We Kiss First give the impression that they have the budget that not necessarily just for the idol. The impression that I get from people is how SM will stick their idol as main lead everywhere and paired them up when the reality, for now, is that they prefer actors as the lead in their in-house pd. I hope they continue this trend too. On the other hand, it’s their actors that actually start being everywhere more than their idol, which kinda their job.
Jung So Min [if we are talking about father is strange] was in SM until 2017.
I don’t think them sticking Idols in lead roles is the only concern people have. It’s the amount of clout their agency will have with the sheer number of talent under them and they can withhold certain actors from projects to get their demands met.
The only publicly known incident I can remember (not SM though) is when Jang Hyuk was pretty much was comfirmed for Secret Garden but pulled out when his agency mate Jay Park wasn’t given the small side character role of Sun.
Jung So-min was actually in a different agency when she broke out in Playful Kiss and Bad Guy. She then took a hiatus before signing under SM and then leaving for current agency.

SM C&C is just subsidiary, people like to mix the SM [idol agency] and SM C&C [their entertainer variety agency]. the artist under the original agency definitely have their own contract about their artistic freedom and from what we’ve seen from SM C&C who also produce Knowing Brother and Hyori B&B, they are more into the drama itself than putting the idol, even when Yoona in B&B, it happens on season 2 and she is a good fit nonetheless. Kang Ho Dong repeatedly said that he was under SM C&C and not really into the idol management.
I just against that it’s all bad when the good things also happen. Like it’s all the company fault that the drama is ruined when many factor is there, especially the crucial part; directing and writing, Reply Series is credited to the team as much as their actor and SM C&C team so far has been good. What I hope the most is that Key East artist can get the budget, production and marketing from SM C&C.
Jung So Min bigger breakout is Father is strange and that happen when she was under SM [the credit can go both ways]

Okay, so basically in The Great Seducer, only Kim Min-jae isn’t from SM now.
