Encountered a discussion on Twitter about Park Sung-hoon in Squid Game S2, and concerns about the role being played by a cis actor. While of course representation is important, I do wonder if the people expressing concerns are familiar with Korean culture and society and how much hatred a transgender actress would likely expose herself to by taking a role like this.
Also, assuming that he did not take the role from a transgender Korean actress, I actually want to give kudos to Park Sung-hoon for taking this role even after the hate he got in Queen of Tears for… playing a character the audience didn’t like.
There are actually a few trans folks in the Korean entertainment world, most notably the singer/actress Harisu who has been in dramas in the past. However, given Korea’s current social/political climate, any positive trans representation in mainstream shows, even if the characters are played by ostensibly cis actors is probably a good thing.
Yeah, but I would imagine the trans actresses wouldn’t want to play someone who is pre-transition. I think that could really mess with gender dysphoria.
