Crash Course in Romance. It is so hard to listen to people base the heroine’s worth on her looks.
Though, also well Plotted and paced by the writer as I’m assuming she anticipated some of the talk among viewers. Talk around the actress and her age and so on.
The onscreen and offscreen responses, very unfortunately and disappointingly, mirror each other in many ways. I am not too sure if the writer had JDY in mind when writing her character to get the message across.
I recall an older drama Oh My Lady with Chae Rim and Choi Simon – similar plot in a way but didn’t have the same response.
Oh My Lady was very different in that she was supposed to be a noona, and way older than him. That’s how the character and plot was different. CCiR though does not seem like it’s supposed to be a noona romance, that’s what the issue is. I haven’t seen anyone say that JDY wasn’t pretty enough for the role, only that she looks way older even though the character isn’t supposed to be.
I guess I’m so used to having to believe that characters are the same age that it doesn’t bother me that it isn’t addressed. I swear that I’ve seen dramas with the actress in her 20s and the actor a decade or so older but we are to assume they are both 30.
But also, bot characters are well into adulthood. When the youngest is 40-ish, I’m not sure age differences matter ? And both the characters do not have anyone in there personal circles who would care or expect a conformation to society’s standards.
It’s really sad, but considering how Korean society revolves around the idea of beauty, the fact that a woman doesn’t spend all her time taking care of her looks just makes her ugly, even if she is JDY (I wish I were as ugly as she is). So the fact that she doesn’t wear fashionable clothes (although I love her looks) or that her hair is not arranged is enough to consider her ugly. Also the fact that she is a working mum in something very un glamorous like cooking for a living.
The actress is beautiful. And I hate that I’ve noticed, but I have, looks like she is aging with minimal intervention. Well, in that there doesn’t seem to be a filter on her and I can see her smile lines. I do not realize how rare it is now a days until I see it.
