I always thought people that singled out one particular social media platform as toxic were just being naive about internet culture and it’s problems at large. But I’ve had a Twitter for 2 months now and I’m convinced that there IS something about it in particular that makes people just especially eager to be snide.
I only made one because of fomo finally catching me and thinking that it would be better way to engage with the fandoms I like, but I don’t think I’m cut out for it! 😅 Time to slip back into my niche little corners of the web instead.
It’s sad because it didn’t use to be that way. It was and is still an important place for many communities (US Young Adult writers come to mind), but somehow fan culture spiralled out of control in Twitterverse. I write and edit for a K-pop site in my free time, and the most inflaming comments and ridiculous accusations we get usually come from Twitter.
That said, I still use it to follow fanart accounts and accounts for sites I read (including DB! And also National Geographic etc.) I just make sure to only interact with people I’ve had actual conversations with in real life.
