Is this KWK in Hello? It’s me!? I think o remember that line! Lol! Oh, since I’m here. What are some good Joseon and Goryeo primers for beginning sageuk kdrama watchers ?
Well remembered! Yes, that’s him in Ep. 1 of “Hello, it’s me”
Well, my sageuk gateway was JUMONG (2006) but at the time I had no idea 81 episodes was considered long. 😀 Time-travel dramas are a good way to ease beginners into sageuks because both viewers and characters are fish out of drama. Recommendations: for Joseon (Splish Splash Love, Queen in Hyun’s Man, Live Up To Your Name; Goryeo (Faith, Scarlet Heart, with caution).
MR. SUNSHINE brought a lot of “Western” people to kdramas so it’s worth a try. But it’s pretty serious. If they want something classic, I’d go for JEWEL IN THE PALACE or CHUNO.
Fun options could be SUNGKYUNKWAN SCANDAL and THE TALE OF NOKDU. Even my father watched Nokdu. I still have to watch it myself.
I’m sure sageuk beanies have more recommendations!
I should clarify, where would one find accurate historical information about Goryeo and Joseon time periods (online and easy to access and read) after they’ve fallen into the rabbit hole of sageuks? I have a whole FB group of of doctors who are watching Red Sleeve who want more historical background. One is watching Goblin and Gong Yoo’s mane made her curious why they stopped wearing their hair down. 😂

Also for Goryeo: THE KING LOVES. It was my kid sister’s first drama.
